In any case my source material was an alphabetical listing of all the original Misfits songs, and who did what in Jerry's handwriting. I gave that list to Mark for his archives. There were *alot* of discrepancies on it, well what do you expect? First, its Denmom, not demom, altho that sounds rather like 'demon' I guess...but other than that, I've met MANY addicts who were fat fucking loads, including my exhub (remember when I was the Nearwidow?)...and I've been in the medical profession for close to 20 years, and you should remember that smack/codiene/opiates slow down your metabolism. It's only POOR junkies who are wasted and thin..the rich ones like to suck down the booze, and candy bars too. They eat like hogs and inhale the methadone and then go out and score the schoolboy*. Can anyone here remember David Crosby??? These two dopey broads useta drink about a case of beer apiece per day in addition to their habit. (one beer, ok, even a lite beer is 100 calories) we are talking about 2400 calories just in beer alone. Alcohol goes immediately to sugar in your system, converting to fat INSTANTLY for future fuel. Do some serious dope, like hydrocodone or smack or even Grampa's cough syrup with codiene, and your body quits burning calories. Enuff with the drug talk. I dont want THIS to turn into a Nazi type discussion here. Heres the Misfits content: I never saw any Misfit take any heroin. Cocaine....well...thats another story. During my socialite punk rock years Glenn did the old blowzine with me lotsa times, and the night of the Chelsea Hotel debacle, (see MSK4m's 'Misfits Book' 'tours and timeline' section for details...or maybe the future 'Best of MB' that CG and I have pondered doing for Markennedy) we were all hopped up on speed donated by none other than Rudi Protrudi of the Fuzztones. Plus my carte blanche all-you-can-drink card for Le Club Mudd at the time which is where we all spent the night getting royally fucked up prior to the evenings culmination at the NYPD station on Centre St. Yes, Jerry TOO. He's no stranger to Mary Jane past or present. Don't buy into the 'clean and sober' hype. It's bullshit. A while back somebody asked (sorry can't remember who) if Glenn really had a nosejob. While the photo on the box set was kinda meanspirited on Jerry and Eerie's part, its true that Glenn had kind of a beezer in the old days even before it was broken. Not huge or anything, but more like an Al Pacino thing goin on there. He was very self conscious about it. when it was broken, he was all excited cause then he could actually justify getting it fixed. Look at it this way..if he was a flat chested woman who got implants, or a tubby one with a mommy belly who got a tuck, who in hell would complain? He got a nose job that improved his appearance and made him feel better about himself. So fucking what? You kids need to get over yourselves. Jerry has told me the story several times. He and Glenn and Germain went into New York City and had 5 acetates made. On the way home, they stopped at Max's and left one there for the jukebox. Then George took 2 others, Glenn took one, and Jerry took the other, and they all went home. > From: JIM > "I wish I was a Misfit" That was a pretty clever song... > From: > Subject: Skrewdriver, The Righteous Black Duck, and all other bullshit > > 2)Skrewdriver got me into the Misfits. Therefore, only those tracks from the Song Shop session that weren't already on Collection I or II were put on Disc 3, much like half of the MSP tracks appear on Collectin I. > Question: I thought I read in an interview, Glenn or Jerry said that Die > Die My Darling was recorded during the WAU sessions and wasn't released > cuz "it took them a long time to get songs out" if this is true then why > is robo credited for the song? It was started by Glenn Danzig in 1978 to replace their former label, Blank Records. After he left The Misfits in 1983, Danzig continued releasing albums on Plan 9. The label ceased to exist sometime near the beginning of 1995 when he decided to start a new record label. Over the years, there has been much confusion about what was actually released on Plan 9. A full listing is available below: 7" Releases ~~~~~~~~~~~ PL1001 - BULLET This was released by The Misfits in June of 1978. PL1003 - TEENAGERS FROM MARS This proposed Misfits single was never actually released. The idea was dropped after 5 copies of the acetate were pressed in 1978. PL1005 - VICTIMS This single by The Victims was released in the summer of 1978. PL1007 - Who Killed Marilyn?/Where Eagles Dare These two songs were recording during the HORROR BUSINESS sessions. As Glenn says in the June 1986 issue of Thrasher, "There's also a 'Who Killed Marilyn'/'Where Eagles Dare' 45 that never came out. The single was never pressed and the idea was dropped for unknown reasons. PL1009 - HORROR BUSINESS This was released by The Misfits in June of 1979. PL1011 - NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD This was released by The Misfits on Halloween of 1979. PL1013 - 3 HITS FROM HELL This was released by The Misfits in April of 1981. PL1015 - WHO KILLED MARILYN? This Glenn Danzig solo single was released in August of 1981. PL1017 - HALLOWEEN This was released by The Misfits on Halloween of 1981. PL1019 - EVILIVE This was released by The Misfits in late 1982. It was the last 7" ever released on Plan 9. 12" Releases ~~~~~~~~~~~~ PLP9 - BEWARE This was released by The Misfits in January of 1980. It was distributed and marketed by several labels in Europe, and therefore not exclusively a Plan 9 release. PL9-01 - WALK AMONG US The Plan 9 version of this album was never released. A different version (which does include the Plan 9 logo on the sleeve) was later released on Ruby/Slash. The original Plan 9 version was supposed to be released in 1981. Although it was never pressed, at least 3 copies of the center label stickers for the LP were made. It was supposed to include the following songs: Side 1: 20 Eyes | I Turned Into A Martian | Astro Zombies | Vampira All Hell Breaks Loose| Nike A Go Go | Devils Whorehouse Side 2 Night Of The Living Dead | Skulls | Violent World Horror Hotel | Ghouls Night Out | American Nightmare PL9-02 - EARTH AD/WOLFS BLOOD This Misfits album was released in November of 1983. PL9-03 - DIE, DIE MY DARLING This EP was released in May of 1984, after The Misfits broke up. PL9-04 - INITIUM This Samhain album was released in August of 1984. PL9-05 - UNHOLY PASSION This Samhain album was released in the spring of 1985. PL9-06 - LEGACY OF BRUTALITY This Misfits compilation was released in June of 1985. PL9-07 - SAMHAIN III NOVEMBER-COMING-FIRE This Samhain album was released in January of 1986. PL9-08 - EVILIVE This Misfits album was released in July of 1987. PL9-09 - MISFITS Now known as COLLECTION I, this Misfits album was released in October of 1988, although the CD version was released in 1986. PL9-10 - FINAL DESCENT This Samhain album was supposedly pressed but never released, either because of a pressing flaw or because of poor album art. The truth may never be known, but an LP version of this recording was never released. PL9-11 - BLACK ARIA This Glenn Danzig solo album was released in September of 1992. It was the final Plan 9 release. CD Releases ~~~~~~~~~~~ PL9-CD1 - MISFITS This Misfits album was the first PLan 9 CD release in 1986. PL9-CD2 - INITIUM This Samhain album was the second CD released on Plan 9. Several different variations of it have been pressed since 1987. PL9-CD06 - LEGACY OF BRUTALITY This Misfits album was pressed on CD in October of 1989. It was at this point that Glenn started ordering the CD releases the same way the LP releases were ordered. PL9-CD07 - SAMHAIN III NOVEMBER-COMING-FIRE This Samhain album was pressed on CD in November of 1989. PL9-CD08 - EVILIVE This Misfits album was issued on CD in March of 1997. PL9-CD10 - FINAL DESCENT This Samhain album was released on Halloween of 1990. PL9-CD02/3 - EARTH AD This Misfits release combined the EARTH AD album and the DIE, DIE MY DARLING EP onto one CD. It was pressed in limited quantities in April of 1992, and permanently issued in 1996. PL9-CD11 - BLACK ARIA This Glenn Danzig solo album was released in September of 1992. > Date: Tue, 18 Mar 1997 14:22:34 +0200 (EET) > From: Helena S Montonen > Subject: Punk Diary > > Then, on some later dates, concerts for the intended tour are listed. You are ignorant. I live 40 minutes from Berkeley. I used to go see Greenday when they were underground and cool. Now they are putting out bad songs. Rancid are local boy's. A good friend of mine went out with Lint and is now with the guitarist to A.F.I. Rancid used to kick ass live at Gilman St. I have a first pressing of their first 7". I have changed my mind a bit. I think their 2nd album "Let's Go" is okay, I think the production is bad. Except for 2 songs, every song on that album has the drums come in on a snare roll. The drumming is very repetitive and boring. The drumming on the first album was just fine and I didn't know Brett sucked. The first album is amazing and a classic. Matt's bass playing is superhuman. Like I said, get him together with Biscuits. Now, the 3rd album, what is that Ruby Soho Crap and the sucky rewrite of Roots Radicals? That whole album is crap (except the first song) Lars is a fuckin' Glam rocker and he ruined that band. How can you say Olympia is a good song? how can you say it is better than The Bottle? Rancid and Greenday and A.F.I were really good before they got popular. Beleive, I've seen all those Gilman St. bands come and go. I remember when Mike Dirnt of Greenday got beat up at Gilman for signing to Warners. The next band to see the light of the mainstream is probably Screw 32. I dunno, If anyone is in the San Fransisco area, come see my band and Screw 32 at Gilman April 11th. If they actually taped the whole show, why can't they just >release the entire thing. Was this tape turned over to Caroline by Glenn >(if it exists)?? Ok once and for all. What you've all been hearing is a *bootleg* Back when this show happened they probably had a 16 track mobile recording unit on sight (if it was done properly) This unit creates the multitrack master tape. This tape is the ONLY source that can be remixed. Obviously the band decided that the 12 songs they picked were the best songs on the tape so these were mixed down to a 2 track master. Note: A 2 Track master! that's just stereo. This is the tape that Caroline now owns. Obviously someone in the studio did a quick mixdown of the multitrack tape and this is where the bootleg is coming from. Neither the band nor the record company bought the multitrack tapes, we can only believe at this point that they've been; lost, damaged, destroyed or similar. Needless to say the bootlegger is not going to come forward with the tape if he has it. Why add grand theft to bootlegging? >> From: Crimson Ghost >> btw: the story of the "teenagers" acetate on a jukebox is obviously false. >> Acetates are test pressings on soft wax backed with steel. 3 or 4 plays and >> it's shot. An Acetate is also the backup should the master tapes be lost or >> damaged. Patricia's (black) Horror Business (now owned by Matt Ball) was on >> the jukebox at the Mudd Club, could this be where the confusion lies? > >I don't think the story is false at all. Jerry has told me the story >several times. He and Glenn and Germain went into New York City and >had 5 acetates made. On the way home, they stopped at Max's and left >one there for the jukebox. Then George took 2 others, Glenn took one, and >Jerry took the other, and they all went home. Sorry Marko - He's bullshitting you. Another obvious stretch of the truth. The jukebox at Max's was one of those old jobs, you know the type with the metal arm that slams the record down on the platter, they also have a real heavy tone arm and needle assembly that prevents the record from skipping if someone bumps it. To put an acetate on this machine would be ludicrous. It's possible however, that they gave the acetate to Peter Crowley (the booking agent) as a gift. Peter Crowley is not a stupid man, he's certainly smart enough to know not to put an acetate on the juke box. Really why bother going through the trouble of opening the box up to put it in, if you have to remove it immediately. Mark you say it yourself... >On the way home, they stopped at Max's and left one there for the jukebox. Left it there! Probably for Peter, left it with a comment like "Hey give this to Peter and tell him to put it on the jukebox." this statement probably followed with laughter if I know Jerry well enough. The Black vinyl copies of Horror Business were the promo copies. These were the copies that were tagged for journalists and jukeboxes et cetera. This is also very fishy because the Misfits reputation at Max's was hanging by a thread, after the fiasco with Tina Peel (the fuzztones) in March of '79. As a matter of fact they were banned. They were still friends with Peter Crowley (bobby is to this day) but Tommy Dean (the owner) hated them and didn't want them booked in the first place. Why would he let Peter put an acetate (an unplayable record) on *his* jukebox if it's by a band that he has banned from his establishment. Bobby you know Peter, why don't you ask him. Denmother Patricia has this to say, Re: Boxset liner notes In the liner notes Eerie says: "Doyle and I were 15 when he did his first show. It was at Irving Plaza, sometimes called Club 57, or the Monster Movie Club." Irving Plaza's address is 57 Irving Place, a hall operated by Tom Scully and Susan Hannaford. This is where the nick "Club 57" came from. The Monster Movie Club was a walkdown storefront on St. Marks Place operated by the same people, who were great fans of trash culture. They had a small bar (probably illegal) set up and they showed movies borrowed from the Bettmann Archives. It was a fun casual place to hang out, but decidedly different from Irving Plaza. Chris Ternes Said: >If you check the WWW page, you will find that >Walk Among Us was intended to be Plan 9-1, I don't know why it changed, I >think Ruby screwed them over or something. According to Jerry, Walk Among Us was never promoted by Ruby(Slash). If we remember back, Fear was on Slash at that time and according to Jerry, Slash was too busy promoting Fear to be bothered with the lowly Misfits. For the record the Aquarian is a NYC PAF rag, more elite than fuck, if you will. To make it short the aquarian had this to say... "...Punk only for its Cramps-like power, energy, and fast, frenetic beat, Matthews adds traces of surf, pop, metal, bubblegum, riot grrrl and 60's girl group sweetness to a bouncy, GO-GO's meets SHONEN KNIFE sheen to craft eight potent slices of top-grade, BILLBOARD chartable radio fluff..." Well that constitutes a rave review as far as anyone is concerned. Here's where I have the problem. I sent Bobby this message after receiving the above... "...You ain't kiddin bucko - congratulations!! That would definitely constitute a *very* favorable review from Aquarian, those fuckers hate everybody. Let's see what the Voice says.. Make sure you send Christgau a copy!..." to which Bobby replies: "...I don't even waste my time with that schmuck..." Now I'll be the first to admit that Robert Christgau is the most liberal left wing piece of shit in NYC....but, he also *RUNS* the music scene as far as Greenwich Village goes. This man had the balls to praise punk rock back in '77 when everyone else was keeping a respectable distance. Wake the fuck up Bobby, Robert Christgau packs *alot* of weight with the record companies. Remember Lester Bangs is dead, Christgau is all that's left. I hate to bring a personal communique into the fray, but this is a great example of what we've been saying about the Misfits all along. Let's just burn all of our bridges at once, eh? I also don't want to hear any PAF feedback like; "Well maybe Bobby doesn't want to be accepted and become mainstream..." to that I say poo poo. Bobby would cut off one of his 9 remaining toes to gain musical acceptance. Why else would he be sending his CD's to radio stations? My question to you Bobby is why on earth would you burn a bridge like Christgau? A favorable review from him *WOULD* land you with a record deal, or at bare minimum get you *alot* of record sales and an increased turnout at your gigs. Bobby you've said time and again that you're "Tired of struggling...I want my money...it's my turn...etc" Well do something about it. This is your professed field of expertise, what you've decided to do with your life, learn to kiss a little ass or you'll be a starving DIY schmuck for the rest of your life. In reality you don't even have to kiss his ass, all you gotta do is send him a copy of your disc. They got their second-generation logo from the logo of the magazine (as in, the style of the lettering is the same). More recently, the Misfits have had Basil Gogos do some artwork for them, who used to do most of the covers for FAMOUS MONSTERS. The magazine does still exist -- but without its father, Forrest J. Not only is heroin and heroin addiction completely relevant to the Misfits, it's a fun topic to sift through! That way if you have 300 pre-orders you know to press 250, cause you know 50 people won't come through." Yea, you got that right! I could do that, but email pre-orders don't mean much. Once someone sent me the cash, then I know that they are going to buy it, otherwise, everyone says "yea, i'll get a CD" and then it comes out and the excuses start coming out "my dog ate my money, i spent all my cash on smack, i just lost my job, i got AIDS so I can't hook for money, i'm gay and no one will hire me" etc etc. Your expansion of my apathy comment really bolsters the above. As long as someone is doing something for you, everyone is on the bandwagon, as soon it requires for you to proactively do something, everyone clams up and sits on their ass, and then bitches about how everything sucks. They sure as hell aren't a member of the Blank Generation ... Alot of work is going into making this tape. Its going to be sold at cost, so Keith and I aren't going to be buying BMWs after we sell these. I never heard Violent World, I don't know if its good or bad, but for all the shit everyone on this list threw at it, here is YOUR chance to make a difference. There is no corporate sell-out rock on here to complain about, no big labels, no lawyers, no profit motive, nothing. Its all DIY. All you have to do is record your fave Misfits tunes. And the rest of you, all you have to do is shell our $3 or $4, basically the cost of one those Colon Cloggin Value Meals @ McRetards, and buy this tape which will clock in AT LEAST at 60 minutes if not 90. I have been getting alot of response from bands from all over the world. If you spent $12 on a 30 minute Misfits tribute (granted its a CD), why wouldn't you spend $3 or $4 on a 90 minute one. From what Keith is telling me the artwork is going to kick ass. We are going to put in a bio of all the bands and basically give you every fucking pennies worth. This list is a great thing for the fans of this unique band. Its only as good as we make it. I've "met" people through this list that have proven to be some of the coolest folks around, from all walks of life, united through the love of one band. (I'm going to setup a 900 # so that you can hear messages from all of them. $4.99 the first minute, $3 each minute after. Kids, if your over 18, get you parents permission first .... (thats a joke!!!!). anyway, let me get off my soapbox ..... the CG then continued " even on a cheap soundcard you can go digital to digital. Just look at the manual, there's a jumper on the board that is the digital input. basically it's the aux input bipassing the a/d converter. not difficult if you're willing to fuck with it. Also, I've seen good quality soundcards with both coax and optical digital inputs, I'm sure they are quite pricey though." .From what I have seen, the only card that has S/PDIF output is the Soundblaster AWE32 gold. Reports from SB say that the card does not accept any digital input at this time. S/PDIF (for Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format) is the format required for digital audio. It think it has to convert what it normally would see as a .WAV or .AU file into S/PDIF and at this point in time, the only card I know that does that reasonbly priced is the Zerofire ZA2 PC to DAT card. It costs about $400, and I spent all my money at Disneyworld!! I'll ask around on my DAT list about your idea as we have alot of eggheads on there, but as far as I know, it can't be done (easily, that is). Denmom said "we are talking about 2400 calories just in beer alone." in the words of Homer Simpson .... mmmmmmm, beer. Inzo said "I remember when Mike Dirnt of Greenday got beat up at Gilman for signing to Warners." Thats too bad, I'd actually be happy for a band that was finally able to support themselves by playing music. What label a band is on shouldn't have (and doesn't) any bearing of how good of a band they are, period. Patrick Whittle said "THE MISFITS? With Agnostic Front? AND RANCID???" I know I haven't been on this list too long, so what I'm probably doing is sacreligous, but I don't care, I absolutely had to comment on this, it was too rich. Maybe it's not Misfits-oriented, but I'm sure it affects 95% of the people on the list, who are probably between the ages of 14-22. > BINGO - correct me if I'm wrong, but this generation is pathetic. Trish and > I comment on this all the time. These kids are boring as hell, they don't > care about shit. Punk as fuck? I doubt it, this generation wouldn't know > punk if it hit them in the ass. Then again they wouldn't know just about > anything, that's the problem. This really was too much. First of all, Crimson Ghost, the 70s were hardly glory days, but it's easy to sell that to a bunch of kids who were born into the compact disc era. Secondly, anyone who tries to define punk or calls someone "not punk" is just trying to levitate themselves to some sort of elitism, or as the judge who will condemn you back to the alternative music scene for not listening to the proper music. "This generation" may have plenty of idiots, but so has everyone before them, and having met lots of kids who I think are really rad, motivated, and play very aggressive music that kicks the hell out of most of the old punk, I'd tend to say I'm happier today in music then ever before. Of course, that's probably because I'm into hardcore...we aren't judgemental here, and we play better music, and there's no elitism, probably stemming from the fact that good hardcore is all DIY and made by kids and us twentysomethings who care enough to do things without bemoaning the good old days. Of course, we fight alot, and beat the hell out of each other and hate everyone else, but at least you don't have to have been friends with V. Vale twenty years ago or dress in full leather with six-foot mohawks and safety pinned cheeks to hang out with us. The music is what matters, people going out and doing it are what matters, not a bunch of old farts who left punk as soon as it wasn't hip anymore, and are now coming out of their minivans after their children's soccer games to yell at the rest of us for rehashing everything. Just shut up. Elitist fuckers, didn't do anything in the first place. I'm sure Crimson Ghost has some snide remarks for me, but I don't care. "I'm destroying punk!" Actually, if it wasn't for us unmotivated kids who don't know what "punk is" (punk isn't anything! come on...) you wouldn't be able to have a place to piss and moan. If punk meant anything to you, you would've slogged through the intervening years with the rest of us. So please move on with your lives, and stop babbling about 20-year old matters. Now I'm through, I don't want to start a subtopic of "what punk is" or how much the old or new generation sucks, because aren't those just stupid topics!? Kudos to the folks who were there in the first place still helping new folks out and keeping the shit going, and kudos to the new folks for noticing good music and coming out and playing and rocking and living, no matter what the false prophets of 1977 have to say. Thank you, goodnight. Feel free to flame away, as long as it's clever. "Protecting the innocents?..." Misfitry... In my continuing quest to promote bands that sound like something the fields will love but sounds new enough not to be a clone, here's a few more into the mix. The Japanese horrormeisters Balzac put out another EP, which I think is better then their picture disc from last year. The name escapes me, but most US distros picked it up, and it is GREAT! The lyrics are more of the horror type, and taking to the Japanese custom pioneered in their hardcore from the mid-80s, it takes the base sound of the Misfits and throws in a few new twists. Great horror-punk, and I love their clothes...I think Glenn should check his wardrobe, he might have a few shirts missing. The Independents are a band you've probably heard of by now, and even though there's some dangerous ska tendencies, they still rock the house, and I actually heard of them because someone said, "You should hear these guys, some of their songs sound like the Misfits with less distortion and violent lyrics." I figured taking the distortion and violent lyrics away would ruin it, but was pleasently surprised. I guess the bottom-line is I can't describe exactly why I like it, but I like it nonetheless, it's some very fun stuff, even though it has a little ska in it. The fabulous NOP alerted me to the fact Rattus did a vinyl pressing of a cover of "Horror Buisness" on the Brazilian press of Uskonto on Vara. Very cool, thanks for the info, I ordered one (and immeadietly sold my NON- BRAZILIAN [I'll never buy Non-Brazilian again! ;O)] copy, because it seemed dirty and tarnished) and it's actually a really cool cover. I'm glad Rattus are Misfits fans, it only fits. If you haven't heard Rattus, you should check them out, they are one of the best hardcore bands ever. Maybe we can get a Finnish Hardcore Solutes the Misfits tribute soon! I can see it now, Terveet Kadet, Lama, Rattus, Riiystetyt, Kaaos, Uutuus, Amen, Propaganda, Bastards... sounds hip. Better break out the IRCs, it's time for some writing! I know some 'Fits fans like the Candy Snatchers, and as well you should, they're the most intense live rock and roll band I've seen in years. They have a new EP out, and while they don't cover "Where Eagles Dare" it's still cool. At a recent live show, upon request, those funk-meisters Spazz played a cover of "Teenagers From Mars" (right after the cover of "Disco Inferno", which has to be one of the highlights of my life thus far)...and it was total annihilation. I think I recognized maybe one riff from the original song. Just brutality. I'm writing Max Ward telling him to do a 'Fits cover on the next Spazz release, here's hoping! I had the chance to hear the new Times Square CD recently, and I must admit while I like the Undead better, it's a solid CD from a band I recently should be seeing live more often. Bobby, nice 'nuff work! And you blow D-Generation away...they're pretty much corporate rock, while Times Square still has a good heapin' helpin' of punk rock in there. Nice work. Was there a vinyl pressing? Well, I'll admit that was Misfits shoddy, I'm sure someone will tell me about it. Har har. I have to go back to being punk as fuck now. ROARRRRRRR! DIY TIL DIE!!!!!!!! Watch out Jello Biafra, I'm going for your hairpiece. GRAMPS ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 1997 14:56:04 -0800 (PST) From: Daniel Herrmann Subject: We are 138 To hopefully end the stupid 138 sightings, and also end questions people might have of the origin of the song, I will post this. Of course some of you will have seen this already, but then again it's better than reading the sightings themselves. WE ARE 138 ---------- Based on George Lucas's 1971 science fiction film "THX-1138," this song reflects the anonymity attached to living with a number for a name in a futuristic police state. On July 1, 1996 Bobby Steele emailed the following to the Misfits Bible: "We used to have badges with a picture of a robot with 138 on his forehead. I wonder if Jerry has one, or remembers it... He [Glenn] used to tell us that if someone asked what it meant, we should just laugh, and in a mocking tone say "What? You don't know?" and sound real snobby when you say it. Make them feel like every idiot but YOU knows what it means." Jerry Only told a similar story to a fan after the July 27, 1996 show: "'138' is like people being treated as androids where you have a number instead of a name, so it's like the human number would be a 138... We had buttons made once, they were robots with '138' that looked like half human android kinda things, long before your Terminator or stuff like that." -Tim ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 1997 19:20:11 From: Bill Hanscom Subject: 138 sighting..yippee! I am relitively new to this list so...are 138 and misfits sightings encouraged, or are they viewed as an annoying waste of space? just curious, because if you think about all the places "138" shows up it really takes away from all these sightings. About the size of an index card, ticket is printed with blue ink, with skull graphics by Johnathon Grimm, with Misfits logo and complete line-up of bands on front. The back has the Misfits Fiend Club address stamped in red ink. I only have a few of these suckers left, so it's limited to TWO per costumer!! I'm selling 'em for five bucks. Also, I've got an old Proedge rehearsal tape fpr '95 with Jerry, Doyle, and me on drums. It's eleven songs for two bucks (on audio cassette). I mentioned the Slags on here before. They're one of the best punk bands in Jersey. Sadly, they're rumored to be breaking up. I highly recommend that you look in the papers to find out where they're playing, and see them before it's too fucking late! Anyway, that's it for now. Subject: Amazing, someone shit on the bible... Hello fiends... first thing, i hope some of you guys got to go to the cons this weekend. i heard from some of you on friday and saturday asking for info. also for the fiends in Europe, there will be some record cons coming up next month. though there will be more info in the next couple of weeks. Well i see corruption in the bible is coming along nicely. first flames, hate, and now ripping off other fiends. nice, way to go. ya know i thought i had seen the last of the sucky fiends when Kris disappeared, but i guess i was wrong. there is no reason to rip off anyone in trade or sales. Plus, your rep is dead after that. First on the bible and soon if the rip is not taken care of it leads to being flamed big time on Maximum Rock and Roll and Flipside. That is when any known trader or store will touch you with a ten foot pole. I've seen it happen, where the person ripped is run through the coals and there are 4 - 5 ads taken out in a single issue so that no one misses it when reading the ads in either mag. the guys who really want to toast someone who rips them will hit Goldmine with an ad, then forget ever playing with the big boys.(any store or trader seller who has the bucks for Goldmine ads) Misfits 101... Once again... this goes out to all you just starting to collect and i know i have talked about this before. See its not just me who worries about getting ripped even fiends i know who can make my collection look like a joke have fears of being ripped. I have been very vocal about this subject when it first happened to me back in 1990 and i didn't know abou it till late 1992. As you all know and can read in Misfit 101 in Misfits Central, i was ripped or attempted rip by Dr. Strange. i would have said at first he just made a mistake, but when he took an long time to correct the mistake, then when i asked for my money back he did nothing and refuse to return my calls(if any of you remember his catalog and that he used a po box and had no phone #) that is when i realized he knew full well what he was doing. I hate to say you can't trust anyone but if its someone you have not dealt with for a long time or know very well it is a possible thing to happen. There are situations that are not rips at all, I bought a Beware before i got my original, and it turned out to be a boot. though the record store understood and took it back and gave me something else. So back to the poop, you are just starting to collect and want to trade or buy from people: 1) Ask about this person, you have lots of bible fiends to ask. best bet is hit the fiends in the collectors section to see if they have deal with this person. * And ask Mark* if he does not know them he might know of someone that does. 2) Ask a lot of questions about the item you want to buy. Print up a copy of Misfits 101 off Misfits Central or if its an item not on there, ask someone who has it or knows about it. Always remember there are 1174 fiends to ask here and even a former Misfits member. Someone will have the answer. 3) If the trade sounds unreasonable or the money asked for is high, ask someone. Plus don't solely go by the real low prices i have on Misfits 101, i was lucky a lot of times and finding some of those items that cheap does not always happen. 4) Use the phone when closing the deal, don't be cheap and e-mail everything. It is important to have the persons phone number and one you have called and the person answers. 5) Shipping, well best bet is request the use of UPS, they insure for free up to $100, and the person your dealing with will have to pay on anything after that amount. No records should be shipped with out insurance on them. I have never dealt with anyone who has not done so. Something is not right if the person who is sending out a record or records worth $50+ and does not save his or her own ass by insuring the package. Though i have never been in a deal with any lost mail. 6) If you think your being ripped, talk to a fiend you know can help you or contact the post office, it is called Mail Fraud, and illegal. In short you have to be on your toes all the time and it might sound like a major pain in the ass to collecting Misfits stuff. Though this does not happen all the time and there are some great people to deal with. Also, if you fear this situation i would the safe way is to deal with record stores and use a credit card, at least the credit card company will take on any scams that might happen in that situation. well i do promise to keep you all up to date with conventions each week, plus stores to buy from as they contact me and any extra Misfits, Samhain and Danzig items that come my way. Let's just >burn all of our bridges at once, eh? To quote Dan Aykroyd . . . Denmom you ignorant slut ; ) If THE MISFITS had used more of my ideas - we would've been big back when we were a real band. It was my idea to contact HURRAH's as soon as I heard a rumor that THE DAMNED were playing there. Glenn wanted to wait until he saw an ad in the VOICE - which woulda been too late. I wanted to send records to college radio stations - they didn't. In fact; the first MISFITS airplay came from a DJ, who had been visiting from Brazil, and was looking for some good NEW stuff to play. I talked him into buying BULLET, and he loved it. When Glenn was putting together the songs for BEWARE - he wanted to take CHILDREN off and replace it with another song. I suggested LAST CARESS. He argued that it was a stupid choice. "I'm sick of hearing that song " were his exact words. I argued; 'you might be sick of it, but I can show you several million people who aren't'. He finally gave in . . . reluctantly. Where would THE MISFITS be if he hadn't taken my advice. I've got a natural feel for this shit. I don't know if I ever told you this, but at the age of 16 I figured out how to manipulate the radio top 40, and succeeded. This was 1972 and I just got a job working the request line at a majot New York radio station. At this time the big act was Donny Osmond, but I liked Alice Cooper. What'd I do ? Whenever some teenie-bopper called in to request Donny's latest song, I gave the credit to SCHOOL's OUT. In no - time, Donny fell off the chart and School's Out rose to #2. Being a major market station, other stations followed suit. It's that easy. I don't give a fuck about Christgau's politics when it comes to record reviews - otherwise I wouldn't send stuff to those fascists at Maximum Rn'R. This is a matter of economics - the most bang for your buck. I've sent other stuff to Christgau. What was the result ? No record labels called me, and no sales were attributed to those mailings. In fact; no review whatsoever. A complete waste. I don't really think he's a schmuck - but it was a fun thing to say. I have no feelings toward the guy - even though I do have a vague recollection of having a run in with him at the MUDD CLUB after hearing that he'd said some very un-cool things about THE MISFITS. I hate MRR. I hate their politics. I hate the way they exploit the ideals of young punks - to their financial gain. Yet; I know if I send a record to them for review it will be reviewed and that one review will be good for about 150 records sold. Immediately! Where would you send that precious promo copy ? To the guy who's not gonna review it, or to the one who's gonna help generate very good sales? In the past, I've succeeded in getting HIT PARADER to review ACT YOUR RAGE . . . and a fairly good one at that. They even mentioned EVE OF DESTRUCTION in their year end 'BEST OF' issue. Trust me. I know what I'm doing. When things pick up, and we have money to burn - I'll send a copy to R.C., until then; he'll have to wait in line with the guys at ROLLING STONE, SPIN and RIP. And for now on; let's keep personal email private. Okay ? If you had brought this up in personal email, you would've seen my point. Or do I have to send Jill down there ; ) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Mar 1997 19:20:32 -0800 From: Inzo Subject: It has been so long, I must say something Okay, Please don't lose this message in all the other posts of theivery. This is where your argument turns to shit kid. You deduce that good hardcore (an oxymoron) can only be DIY, an obviously ELITIST statement. Whether or not something is good has absolutely nothing to do with the color of the label. Elitism never entered into the picture back in the "good old days." Fans were happy as shit when the Ramones started getting airplay, or when Blondie's contract with Private Stock was bought out by Chrysalis. Kids back then didn't sit and complain that they were picked up by a major (like what happened here with the Misfits/Geffen) kids back then were glad that a band made it. Because people back then weren't elitist. God forbid a band get picked up and get some airplay today, then of a sudden they have shitloads of fans. Horror of horrors someone else besides *you* might understand it, we can't have that can we? Building a treehouse out of music and only letting in people that think, look & act like you is elitism, a text book definition if you ask me. >I'm sure Crimson Ghost has some snide remarks for me, but I don't care. Punk means nothing to me, it's not a hairstyle or an attitude, It's music maybe simple and minimalist maybe not. In any case it should be the *music* with the attitude *not* the fans. In any case your post is irrelevant here on the Misfits Bible, why don't you take it to alt.punk where they seem to have this argument going for the last 5 years. If you remember correctly my original comments were directly related to the bible in that we have experienced *alot* of apathy over the years with just about every contest, tee-shirt, etc... that came along. >If punk meant anything to you, you would've slogged through the >intervening years with the rest of us. This is totally false. I (Denmom) 'slogged' thru punk during the worst of times, in addition to the best of times. I 'quit' punk (read: the new stuff) when I started HATING what I was hearing. I probably 'grew out of it', like my parents told me, but I think its more that I didnt like what 'punk' had become. It wasnt fun energetic heartfelt music anymore --to me-- but what Dischord was doing seemed like instant death. Back to the youngster, CG. Why on Earth AD (<---gratuitous Misfits content) would I want to slog through the intervening years when there was really nothing worth listening to? I certainly don't listen to music because it's "aggressive" who cares? Is it listenable? Does it have any musical content? No thanks, I buy music cause I like it, *not* because it's done by poor musicians (<-- I use this term *very* loosely) with a message. I'll stick with funk. ~-=`=-~-=`=-~-=`=-~-=`=-~-=`=-~-=`=-~-=`=-~-=`=-~-=`=-~-=`=-~ Famous last words vol. 1 "Thank you very much to the person that threw this glass bottle at my head, you almost killed me...but you missed again kid. try again next week..." Bill Avery did return my records. I have no way to know whether he ever really had the Misfits "Three Hits" on white that he claims he sent me, but you read Tim Cotters posts... I have been an avid record collector for years, and I would like to give my thoughts on trading, especially on what went wrong with a recent trade (between myself and Bill Avery). I don't think my collection could put Tammy's to shame or anything, but it means a lot to me. Even with several thousand records, getting ripped of on a single one hurts. I know a lot of readers out there may not be collectors, but to me collecting the records is part of the reason I love the Misfits, and 3/4 of the reason I follow the Misfits Bible. And collecting/trading/selling records has allowed me to hear thousands of bands, some of which I worship now (like Misfits, Dwarves, Dayglo Abortions, AFI, Dead Kennedys, etc.) One think I think should be mentioned is what to do if someone accuses you of ripping them off. My own policy is to immediately reimburse them no questions asked. If the package I sent them was insured, I would then file with the post office. If not, it was a chance I took - and I have to pay. If I think the person was bluffing about not receiving my package, then I may choose not to deal with them further. I don't insure every package, but I sure wouldn't send out a package worth over $100 with out paying a measly buck to insure it. If anyone else out there has any other ideas on this subject let me know. >>1) Ask about this person, you have lots of bible fiends to ask. best bet >>is hit the fiends in the collectors section to see if they have deal with >>this person. * And ask Mark* if he does not know them he might know of >>someone that does. This is definitely a good idea. Unfortunately, no one I wrote about Bill knew of him. Some of the best deals I get are from people who don't usually trade, but put up there collection for the first time. Getting bad feedback would certainly make me cancel a deal - but no feedback is neutral. >>2) Ask a lot of questions about the item you want to buy. Print up a copy >>of Misfits 101 off Misfits Central or if its an item not on there, ask >>someone who has it or knows about it. Always remember there are 1174 >>fiends to ask here and even a former Misfits member. Someone will have the >>answer. Good idea again, but everyone has access to every little detail about Misfits records. >>3) If the trade sounds unreasonable or the money asked for is high, ask >>someone. Plus don't solely go by the real low prices i have on Misfits >>101, i was lucky a lot of times and finding some of those items that cheap >>does not always happen Good again, but the good deals are the trades you usually want the most. Anyone can get most any record if they pay five times the going rate. Getting them for half the going rate is the trick. And as Tammy has said, they are out there.. >>4) Use the phone when closing the deal, don't be cheap and e-mail >>everything. It is important to have the persons phone number and one you >>have called and the person answers. This is probably the best. Bill Avery repeatedly insisted that he had no access to a phone. Obviously a lie from someone who sends E-mail every day. I said he could call collect, day or night. He didn't. I buy and sell stuff alot. I have over 500 people on my mailing list. I DO NOT give out my phone number because I just started getting too many calls. My wife was getting pissed. But even I would be willing to talk to someone who I was sealing an important deal with. Plus some people are really interesting to talk to. >>5) Shipping, well best bet is request the use of UPS, they insure for free >>up to $100, and the person your dealing with will have to pay on anything >>after that amount. No records should be shipped with out insurance on >>them. I have never dealt with anyone who has not done so. Something is >>not right if the person who is sending out a record or records worth $50+ >>and does not save his or her own ass by insuring the package. Though i >>have never been in a deal with any lost mail. Absolutely. I made it clear to Bill that I would only make the trade if both packages were insured. He claimed he "forgot" and that mine was lost in the mail. You can't guard against this, but since he signed for the package I sent him at least I had proof mine was sent. Even though you hear a lot of bad stuff about the US Mail, they are EXTREMELY reliable. I have sent out over 1000 packages in the last 10 years, and NOT A SINGLE ONE WAS LOST. >>6) If you think your being ripped, talk to a fiend you know can help you or >>contact the post office, it is called Mail Fraud, and illegal. Definitely follow-up. It's just a form to fill out and the person will be contacted. Even if no action is taken, if several complaints are filed against the same person, the police WILL take action. At least noone would be able to make a career out of it. You might also want to start out with a few small deals with a person to get to know them. Trade a tape or some flyers. Hope you enjoy. Danzig strays from familiar hard-rock sound Saturday February 8th, 1997 Photo of Danzig and band included with caption naming them. by Michael A. Capozzoli Jr. For the Tribune-Review Glenn Danzig has been able to maintain a career as a hard-rock artist the past 20 years. In the late 1970s, Danzig led his punk-rock group the Misfits. In the mid-1980s, when he fronted Samhain, a less punk-oriented and more heavy-metal outfit, Danzig began to make his mark within the hard-rock genre. When that scene began to fade in the early l990s, Danzig had long since moved onto megaproducer Rick Rubin's American Records label. There Danzig found a relatively safe haven to create music. While other heavy metal artists went into oblivion as far as concert ticket and album sales, Danzig, through new albums and constant touring around the world, was able to maintain a strong global fan base. Yet Danzig's days at American were not always productive for the label's sales department. "At American," Danzig said, "if you don't do the kind of record they want, they're not going to push it. I wanted to leave the label because American is falling apart. There is no leadership there. Anyway, I left and now I'm with Hollywood records." The 40-year-old Danzig's Hollywood debut, "Blackacidevil," is a serious departure from the artist's previous recording ventures. The music on "Blackacidevil" is more technology oriented than any of Danzig's other albums. There's almost no shred of the hard rock/punk/metal sounds that Danzig based his career on. "What's funny is people have heard the music completely ignore the techno element that's in there." Danzig said. "People think we're metal, but we were never accepted by that crowd. I set up my music so that it's for everybody. Those who can tap into it do, and the people that don't, probably shouldn't be listening anyway. I make records that I think are great and anything that comes afterwards is just icing on the cake." One of the more interesting tracks on the album is a cover of the Black Sabbath tune, "Hand of Doom." Danzig has recorded the song differentl
