Is he afraid to have to tell you why he's holding out on the money owed to me and Joey Image, or is he afraid of being asked which of the several different versions of his stories about me and Glenn is true ? The reason Glenn stopped talking about THE MISFITS was because interviewers started calling him out on his contradictions. Did you read the latest FLIPSIDE interview. Jerry alludes to this fact in there. For a little more insight, you should all read SECONDS #44. It has back-to-back interviews with both Glenn and Jerry . . . and Glenn talks about THE MISFITS (I wonder what they slipped in his drink to get him to do that). Glenn say he never wanted me. In other interviews Jerry says HE didn't want me. It sounds like COLLECTION 2. In this same issue, Jerry talks about the LONDON DUNGEON incident. I don't know if anyone's seen this yet. To summarize, he says that a buhch of skinheads started a fight with Glenn, and I RAN AWAY ! What's wrong with this sentence ? Can you picture Bobby Steele . . . who's too crippled to kick his way out of a coffin (in Jerry's words) actually outrunning a bunch of skinheads ? Now he'll have to cover his tracks by saying, "oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the skinheads were all hobbled and in wheelchairs - that's why Bobby was able to outrun them". Keep talking Jerry. Soon enough you won't even have the credibility of a priest in a strip club. On a more positive note; the east coast tour has run into a few minor snags, but they should be worked out by next week - and I'll have Mark post the info. The CBGB's show is confirmed for November 14th w/THE INDEPENDENTS and C.J. RAMONE's band LOS GUSANOS. There'll be people from Columbia and Epic Records there - so I'm hoping for a full house so I can show them that we've still got it. Re: the issue of the continuation of the Misfits 'horror' image. I personally think the Misfits are the only band other than KISS that carry off a full scale 'image' without looking too stupid. Much as I love the Misfits, take away the image and I think you'd turn an awful lot of people off. In fact, take any band that's ever had an identifiable image, each time they've gone 'straight', they've lost their audience... KISS, Twisted Sister, Crimson Glory (haha). >From my experience of the new line up, when I first saw them at the London Astoria a year or so ago Michale Graves didn't have his image figured out properly and Jerry & Doyle looked like they had in the late 80's. When I saw them back at the start of this year they all looked great and it really added to the show. If they were using flashpots and confetti cannons then maybe I'd think otherwise but the image as it stands is fairly unique and works well. Plus, it allows Jerry FAR more scope for merchandising :) BTW, anyone else noticed that Mr Only seems to be losing some of his more, er, surplus bulk lately? One last thing... I know a few people on here are helping with this at the moment but 20 Eyes are better than two. If ANYONE sees a copy of an album by 'Dear Mr President' (self titled) I will pay top $ plus postage plus a 'finder's fee' for a copy. I would prefer CD or Vinyl but cassette (or even a dubbed copy) would be OK. The album was released on Warner Bros. during the late 80's and so there must be some copies still around. If anyone can help I'd be very grateful... y'never know, maybe some of you have it lurking in your collections and have been thinking 'Why in the hell did I buy THIS piece of shit?' for the past 10 years. I think Oasis are a pretty damn cool band, but the Misfits aren't any less of a "real band" just because they don't make as much money. If that were the case, then I guess Puff Daddy and Beck are more of a band than the Misfits, Samhain and Danzig all put together, right?! Wrong! I'm not trying to start shit, but that was a pretty pointless post. And anyway, do you think 20 years down the road people are gonna conider Oasis one of the most influential bands in Rock history? I doubt it. About the Horror Hotel/London Dungeon thing... they're both kick ass sites. That's all that matters. They both provide us fiends with a cool place to visit on the web. I've talked with the Horror Kid a few times via email, and he seems like a real swell fella. I hope there is no more shit between the two webmasters. Hmmm, the Misfits without the make-up and everything. No sir, I don't like it! True, the real backbone of the band is the great music, but it all goes together. It's a lot more fun to see bands like the Misfits, Kiss, Gwar, and the few bands who still enjoy putting on a show for their fans than seeing some depression rock weenee staring at the ground and barely even aknowledging the audience's existence. O.K. I subscribe to a newsletter that I beleive will fill my life with more Misfits info than a person could possibly need. I read the first issue I recieve, and everyone is bitching about how sucky Graves is and how he doesn't compare to Glenn. Whell, by Goddess, Graves is better than Glenn and I'm not afraid to admit it. I personally own every song the 'Fits put out, I losten to American than any other of there albums. I really love the earlier stuff, but the new album really has the feel of a band who are in synch, and are working together for the love of the music. And to me, that is the most important thing that music needs today. And the DUHB video was amazing. KISS have lasted as long as they have if they stuck with the makeup? The custom instruments are great, they shouldn't change a thing. I've never seen the Misfits live, I discovered them through the music they play and I've never seen the DUHB video (I get 4 snowy channels on my TV). I'm sure there are ways of looking ghoulish. Let's face it, the Misfits are a band reborn and maybe they need a facelift. I don't think Jerry would look that great in jeans and T-Shirts, but what's wrong with say leather pants and a tatoo covered body. A lot has been made the past few bibles about Danzig's blackacidevil and AP, and the differences between them. So, i took a listen to b-a-d, and i think that the album has a lot of good music on there - some are really kick-ass , and some are worse than others (which means, conversely, that some are better than others); this is true of almost all of glenn's earlier albums, - every song isn't great - but there are more good than bad tunes on the album. My criticism is that, on that album - after the very good "4", he messes with what's always been his strongest attribute as an artist - his voice - it was so distorted on some of the songs of lesser quality that it detracted from the song. All in all it's a good album, maybe a great one if you take one or two songs and put em on a B side somewhere (like the title song). AP's a completly different creature, much more like a Ramones or Glennfits album - not hard on the brain and doesn't aspire to be. Hell, there's enough of that shit out there. AP is all escapism, come in and join the fun, you either dig it or you don't. A lot of folks on this here bible are polarized between old and current Fits, fuck it, it's better than most of the new shit they play on the radio these days. Glenn's past that, he's attempting to be an auteur - the "artist of the floating world" (ishiguro) - he aspires to something higher. So what if he doesn't want to do the Fits thing, let the rest of them carry on with their things. But don't take it out on Glenn, he'll be sad, and even Danzig needs a hug every now and then. He told us that Glenn had some problems with Googy (he got rid of him about a year earlier), and Glenn really didn't want to put up with him (I never really got the scoop on what the case was, though). The bottom line was that either Glenn deal with Googy or leave. So Glenn left. That's the story I got--whether or not it's 100 percent, I don't know. The morrigu was some type of animal god- shape-shifter thing, I don't recall exactly. Something like that I think. Check Bullfinch's mythology. I loaned out my copy of the book that deals with all this two years ago and never got it back. Also to flesh out the Samhain seasonal thing-- yes, it was the the Celtic pagan new year representing the autumn solstice in the wiccan and other nature-religion calendars. Samhain was first in importance, followed by Beltane the spring equinox around March 20-21st. Samhain was the "season of the dead" because the celts believed the spirits of the dead hung around until the end of the year, at which point they were released to the afterlife. A beautiful ritual that went with this was that on Samhain night, OCT 31, most major hills in ireland would have bonfires built atop them to warm the souls on their journey and to ward off faeries from obstructing these freed souls. There are lots of other stories that follow this tradition. Loreena Mckennit has used it frequently as a theme for her songs (she did the soundtrack for "Jade") and her music can be extremely haunting. Obviously SAMHAIN represents a darker, more mystical side of rebirth and for this reason (perhaps) it was especially meaningful for Glenn as he started over after the misfits. In defense of Ronnie Biggs who I've talked with privately-- he's a good guy and did not mean that Oasis was a better band just because they were making more money than the Misfits. He said they were better AND were making more money-- don't be so quick to jump on people. Oasis is a damn good band whether or not they are very original or worship the Beatles.(I know another band that isn't very original and tries to copy an old broken-up horror-punk group) Noel is great guitar player and has a great feel for song-craft as well as writing some very thoughtful lyrics. I would point out that Oasis is a very honest and upfront band with little regard to what people think of them and they love to tumble with people who criticize them. They are closer in spirit to the old misfits and punk than the new misfits are. As times change, different kinds of rebellion are needed. Also the historical Ronnie Biggs was not just a convicted british felon but also sang some Sex Pistols songs on the Great Rock and Roll Swindle because it was only half finished when the band imploded. There are 3 different versions of the "Nike A Go Go" keyboard track. The one on the VAMPIRA bootleg CD is from a lost master tape. The one on the box set is from the same session, but is a different mix with a different vocal track. Could anyone ever possibly have more than one reason for doing something? Both Jerry and Glenn have been saying for years that they don't like the sound of Earth AD. Why? I don't know. I think it's one of the most amazing, intense albums I've ever heard. I like it better than WALK AMONG US, but that's just me. Glenn says Jerry, Doyle, and Robo recorded the instrumental tracks while he slept, and that's true. Jerry says Glenn and Spot were in charge of the production and that Glenn put the album out (in December of '83) after they broke up. That's true too. Either way, neither of them seem to like it. As for the last show, Jerry has been saying for years that the show didn't go well and that he only wanted Glenn to just apologize for it and admit that he was wrong. Jerry says he and Doyle were so pissed that they played the show sitting down on their amps. Glenn had already lost interest in the band and had started working on Samhain stuff. Glenn says that he quit the band in June '83 after the Santa Monica Civic show. He obviously changed his mind, since the whole band went into the studio in July of that year to finish up EARTH AD, and they also did a show or two in the New York City area. Regardless, the band hadn't practiced much when the Halloween show rolled around. Listening to the tape of the show makes this obvious. And another thing - it's obvious that something happened on that stage that night because Glenn says to the crowd that it's their last show ever. And so it was, at least together. They did have a tour of Germany planned to support the German releases of EARTH AD and EVILIVE. Jerry had to cancel it after the show. Either way, it seems to me that 2 guys (Jerry and Glenn) who had been performing as the Misfits for roughly 6 years, 6 months, and 6 days (first show 4/25/77, last show 10/29/83 - Halloween '83) just got tired of each other. Both tell the story from their own point of view.
