Date: Wed, 4 May 94 13:29:00 CDT The Misfits mailing list sounds cool...but to attract more people I think you need to call it the G. Danzig list or something so it will include all of his work. I do not know of anyone else to get on the list. Ask Giznad, he'll be at UofI for another year. Anyways, I'll send you those shows if you're interested. Thanks for all the lyrics, too. I'm gonna pick up those Danzig/Metallica lyrics Saturday! Finally, I'm 21 going on 22 in May. A word to the wise: don't rush time....it'll get there all too soon. By the way, who is Ethan? Maybe you could make some names up or something to attract people and make it sound really big. That probably wouldn't be a good idea the more I think about it. If someone wants a personal address it could get sticky. Advertise in all the lists you can find. I only have Kiss and Prince (the only pop artist I listen to and respect). Put it in the alt.music.ftp, etc. etc. etc. But the best idea would be to give it a name that is totally encompassing of Glenn. Finally, I'll send you those shows as soon as I get a chance. That makes some sense. The Rush mailing list is called the National Midnight Star or something and I can't see how that has to do with Rush. Of course I'm not really knowledgeable of Rush. The Danzig show I saw was most excellent. He played 19 songs - 5 off the first album, 5 off the second, 6 off the 3rd, 1 off the new EP, one soon to be released and the ultimate song - When Death Had No Name. It was a killer show. Lots of music, no bullshit. No boring talk, just 4 guys out to play good music. Chuck Biscuits was unbelievable, and obviously Glenn was too. I was right up in the front row and both Glenn and John noticed me at one time. Come on Ethan, you should know all this, you were right there too. Misfits shows were quite full of energy as anyone who's seen the Creepy Compilation bootleg video would agree. Hey, Bob does your video have a promo MTV imitation video for Braineaters on it? We have got to find some way to get more people to join this Misfits list to make it more fun. I know that Mark did. It was amazing, the whole show was great, they played most of their best stuff although a few songs were overlooked. At one point in the show, John fell over a monitor on the stage in an attempt to get closer to the crowd. Also, for some mysterious reason Glenn and John looked directly at Mark and I more than once during the show. It was weird, I looked up and he was just staring at me, for no apparent reason, I wasn't going crazy or anything like that either. He seemed really nice to the crowd, too. I know that in some ways, he is a complete bastard, but he is really nice to the crowd. I even had the towel that he threw to the crowd. To answer Bob's questions: Rat Fink was on the Night Of The Living Dead 7", released on 10/31/79. Bobby Steele was the guitarist at the time and after he left, he formed the Undead (1981) and recorded his own versin of Rat Fink, released in 1989 on the Act Your Rage! album and later reissued on the Dawn Of The Undead album in 1991. The Undead's live album - Live Slayer - a sort of pun based on Slayer's Live Undead album had a live version of Rat Fink on the LP version only. About Evilive, I heard from Caroline in 1992 that it was supposed to come out in May of 1992. Obviously that never happened. Then I was told that it would be released 4/15/94. Well, I called Caroline a few weeks ago and they said it hadn't been released and that there were no plans for it to be released... I'm into the older stuff really. My 3 favorite songs are: 1 She 2 London Dungeon 3 Hollywood Babylon or Return Of The Fly And most of the other songs would be tied for 4th, especially Spook City... I too think that Jerry and Doyle were the champs. I remember back in 8th grade when Walk Among Us was reissued everyone would point to Doyle and say that he was Danzig because they assumed that the big, tough, mean looking guy would be Danzig. Wrong. I love those old pictures of the Misfits where Glenn is this little shrimp in between 2 massive "Twins of evil". The band would never have stuck together if it weren't for Jerry and Doyle. Glenn was an asshole to the other guys in the band often. That's whey Arthur Googy and later Robo left the band. It was Glenn's fault that they broke up. They had such potential then. They were about to go on a tour of Germany. It was their time to just take off... Instead, Glenn walked out on them... Obviously he didn't need them to succeed, but I think he's still (as Jerry says) living in the shadow of the Misfits. He refuses to talk about them and won't play their songs. Why? They're obviously good songs. It's because he doesn't want the attention focused on them. He wants to be known for Danzig... Does Danzig really think all that upside down cross stuff means anything, i certainly don't. his videos sound interesting although i have never seen any. Doesn't he have a lot of censored videos with their uncensored counterparts floating around. Isn't there one with some babe with her shirt off and wings on her back or something? Hard to believe Danzig started off in some underground punk band who jack nobody new or cared about and now is some rich, money grubbing mega-star on MTV and playing with Metallica. Wouldn't the real Misfits been against some of that. MTV is about selling maybe that's why Danzig let the censored videos air. MONEY. The real Mifits wouldn't have gave a shit to censor Braineaters. At least thats the image the band projects, whether or not they would have followed the same path Danzig (the band not the man) has followed had they been "discovered" and become popular in the mainstream, well maybe not mainstream at least with enough people to be recognized. Actually I suppose they have become that now even though they aren't a band anymore. Danzig and Metallica have the most to do with that. First, about the original Unholy Passion 12". It certainly is a different. mix. The rerecorded versions on Final Descent are better, but I'd stilll by the original version if I could ever find it again. That line in Initium is "Beckon it" I have most of the lyrics to any song Glenn Danzig or Bobby Steele or Jerry and Doyle have ever written and they are more accurate than the versions available through FTP. Some day, I hope to super-correctify all of them and put them up instead of the disorganized and incorrect lyrics they have now. But anyone who wants to have somewhat of an idea about the lyrics might as well get them. Sadly though, the lyrics to Walk Among Us, whether you get them over FTP or from the record sleeve, don't contain those mumbled lines in Nike. Bob, what you said sounds okay... I always thought he was talking about a long white dress but couldn't figure out how that fit... About the Doyle fan club, it is still around. They apparenlty haven't sent anything out in quite awhile, although you can still get some really cool Jerry Only posters from them. Also, the Kryst The Conqueror EP is still available and has been since it came out in 1989. I've never seen it anywhere other than a place in New York. It's often available through mail order, but the best place to get it is from the band themselves. It's all they've done so far as a band, no touring was ever done. Write to: The Doyle Fan Club P.O. Box 310 Vernon, NJ 07642 The Danzig III box set is pretty cool I think. If you see it, grab it. It's only about $30 and has a cool 3D cover on the box. Also the CD itself is a picture CD with a different cover - the same as the promo posters for the album where the band is standing there in the dark and there is a light on Glenn, with a blue background. The video is silly. All it's got on it is the elusive uncensored version of the How The Gods Kill video. The one and only difference between it and the MTV version is that the horrible snake woman from the album cover sort of parts those snakey things so you can see her breasts. No doubt this was entirely necessary to the impression the video was supposed to give... yeah, right. It seems like Glenn just wanted to be able to say that yet another of his videos has been censored... In fact, the cover of the videocassette itself is just a closeup shot of the woman's breasts. I wasn't looking for Playboy, Glenn, I wanted Danzig.... But hell, I bought it and I think everyone should before it goes out of print. You can still special order it and they still have it sitting around at some stores even though it came out in December of 92. Okay, and finally, Beyond Evil. This CD bootleg comes from Europe and was released in 1990. It says that it's outtakes from 77-80, but it actually covers the bands entire existence, except for 1977. The songs included are: Children In Heat | Rat Fink | Halloween II | Nike A Go Go (demo) We Are 138 | Teenagers From Mars (Static Age demo) | Comeback (Static Age demo) Angelfuck (Static Age demo) | Spook City U.S.A | Demonomania (demo) Queen Wasp (demo, they mistakenly call it Halloween III on the CD) Theme For A Jackal (Static Age demo) | Who Killed Marilyn (demo) Where Eagles Dare (demo) | Return Of The Fly (Static Age demo) Devils Whorehouse (demo) | Devilock | Green Hell | Last Caress | Hybrid Moments (Static Age demo) | Attitude | Hollywood Babylon The sound quality is pretty trashy. Basically the bootleg was put together by some guy who had the singles and a tape of demos. It's so bad that you can actually hear the records popping and crackling, like old records do. The Static Age Demos, recorded in January 78 for the never released Static Age album are just shitty versions of the tunes on Legacy as are the Eagles and Marilyn demos. The other demos - from Earth A.D. and Walk Among Us are pretty shitty sounding too. The only good thing about this bootleg is that it includes the original version of Teenagers and it's got Return Of The Fly. The Queen Wasp demo is actually an instrumental so that's kind of neat. If you've been looking for a Misfits instrumental, which I doubt, here it is... Also it's got those somewhat hard to find B-sides songs, unfortunately recorded straight from the records instead of the master tapes. Of course if we want real quality versions, we have to wait for Glenn to reissue them. One thing that sucks about this bootleg is that the guy who made it got overexcited about the capabilities of recording technology and used these silly fade in and fade out gimicks so that parts of songs are actually cut off. you can still order it from some bootleg distributors. Check the backs of music magazines for their advertisements... A friend of mine has a catalog for one that had quite a bit of misfits stuff, i'll try to get it from him when i go home. Also, if you happen to be near St. Louis, there's a CD store there called Now Hear This which sells loads of bootleg CD's. You can get it there. Okay, time for me to stop typing.... To make this whole thing more interesting, I try to write a message to every issue. We need to make it big and massive so that everybody will want to be on it and Mark will become a famous man. Maybe if it becomes real big, it will be acknowledged (did I spell that right?) by some of the band members like the Rush mailing list. Just an idea. I noticed though that the amount of people on here has gotten bigger every issue and this is only like the 5th or something which is good. Maybe we are all too anxious and it will get too big for just Mark to handle. I have another idea, I think that Mark should assume the title "Misfits Mgr" like the Rush Mgr on the Rush list. Just another idea. I couldn't tell which my favorite Misfits songs are because there a too many awesome ones. I guess you could say they all are my favorites. I agree Jerry and Doyle made up the band, too. What would it be without their music and their backup vocals? Does anybody know what happened to the other guys like Mr. Jim, Bobby, Franche and all the other former band members? We should all make shirts to advertise this digest thing. I guess that it is alright though considering that we both own it (the same one). Well that is neat that these issues are getting bigger and bigger. The one I just got done reading was nearly twice as big as the one before it. I wonder if Kryst the Conqueror will ever go on tour or something like that. That would be really neat. They have a completely different sound than that of the Misfits. More Iron Maideny and it has guitar solos in it, too. I think it would be neat if Jerry and Doyle put out some more stuff like that. I had no idea that there were 15,000 people that even knew about Kryst the Conqueror. That is really weird and to think that if 15,000 wrote, imagine how many people didn't. There must still be alot of Jerry and Doyle fans out there still. Enough space for today. My friend who goes to Hampshire College in Amherst Massachusetts just heard Mommy... on the radio today. I think that's amazing. It seems that a radio station would play a tamer song if they were going to play any Misfits at all, although I suppose if it's run by students they can play whatever they want. I've heard several Danzig songs on the radio. Mother has been on several times and I think once I heard Am I Demon. But the lyrics from Walk Among Us & Samhain III are from the album, and they're not totally accurate. Any idea who does the lyrics on the albums? Is it the band members, or do they get some groupie to translate? So does anyone have the lyrics to American Nightmare & Come Back & Hybrid Moments? Those were hell to decipher (in fact, we couldn't). And also, Green Hell (I think Metallica used their own lyrics for it, but I don't know). --- Subject: Misfits I don't think the Misfits would ever have been as great without Danzig. He wrote most of the songs, and he had the voice. But I still wish they'd re-form, without him. But they should keep the Elvis/Morrison voice, IMO. I remember reading that Danzig didn't like some of his band members, calling them "rich kids" and stuff like that. And didn't he get pissed at Bobby Steele for wanting to throw a live rat into the audience? I've only heard a Misfits song on the radio once. When I was CO-OPing in Salt Lake City, there was this radio station in Provo (KJQ), which billed itself as a "modern rock" station. They played mostly alternative (whatever that means now), but on Sunday nights they had a show called "The Loud Show", where they played heavier stuff. Anyway, they played She. My fave songs (at the moment) are: Bloodfeast I turned into a Martian Halloween Bullet This'll probably change in 5 minutes. ;) Part of the reason I haven't written is that, after reading the first few issues, I've simply been amazed at how knowlegeable (sp?) some of y'all are on this stuff. I got out my copy of the Misfits' At the Ritz and contemplated it. The cover has a picture of a girl's face with cracks in it, like it was a statue or something--very un-misfits-ey. The insert folds open to reveal: a blank inside. Yay. Very exciting. If it didn't say Misfits on the cover I would never have guessed. Here's the track listing (it's a little odd): 1. We Are 138 11. Nike a Go Go 2. I Turned Into a Martian 12. Hatebreeders 3. Horror Business 13. Horror Biz 4. Attitude 14. Skulls 5. Mommy Can I Go 15. All Hell Breaks Loose 6. Out and Kill Tonight 16. Attitude II 7. London Dungeon 17. Devil's Whore House 8. 20 Eyes 18. Hatebreeders 9. Astro Zombies 19. We Are 138 II 10. Teenagers From Mars The only information given about the date is: NYC 12/81 but it's apparent that some of these are the ones on Evilive. If I didn't know every riff and screwup from that album by heart, the between-songs patter would be a dead giveaway. The recording quality is remarkably ungood; I was hoping for something better on a CD. Also the CD is damaged: it looks like someone was scraping out the serial numbers. And instead of the Misfits, the CD itself says: The Skulls "Punk Rules" Whoever was making it wanted to disguise something. It says at the bottom Produced by Chris Thomas and is copyrighted 1989 Punk Production. The overall quality is not too good; don't get this unless you are a diehard fan and must own everything (which you probably are if you're reading this). I heard this was BS, but quite funny. Almost as funny as "Mr. Nazi", as my friends and I call him, who is in the best show on the Creepy Compilation, I think it's the Michigan Cable show. He has this homemade t-shirt with a HUGE swastika on the back and is just going insane the entire time. Those skinheads were goofy, but funny. I thought it was great when they tried to attack Glen and he pushed them all and then punched that one guy. ___ Blue Wave/QWK v2.12 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 May 1994 15:07:19 -0400 (EDT) From: Belial Subject: bible over summer, whatnot, etc. Is this group going to continue over the summer? I will be out of school, but will have access to an account via MIT and certainly would like to continue conversing with other Misfits listeners. I do agree that the posting of the bible should be shortened to weekly rather than daily, however, as I imagine most of y'all will have real jobs as well as myself and would be unable to post every day. On other notes, I'm still working on the translations for "Come Back" and "American Nightmare", and should have something soon, so stay tuned... Regarding various shows, does anyone know if the Undead are planning on hitting Boston anytime soon? I've seen them in NYC and Richmond, but really don't have time to head that far anymore. Bobby Steele was telling me that the clubs in Boston are all run by assholes (and I agree) and require booking about a month in advance, but they have played in the area before. I went up to New York to visit my grandparents and go to a really cool record store. there, i picked up another Beware bootleg and got the Halloween promo video added to my Creepy Compilation. The owner of this store is the guy that sold the tape of Live X'mas 81 or Hittsville, or If You dont' know this song, what the fuck are you doing here, whatever you want to call it, to a bootlegger for $200 back in '85. That's where the bootleg comes from. Also he told me the name of the guy who put together the Creepy Compilation video - Peter Damatta (spelling on last name?). Apparently he's some guy from New Jersey. Anyway, most of you seem to think these things should come out less often, and so they will. Maybe once or twice a week, although I'd rather put them out more.... What does everyone think? If you're going to be gone over the summer, tell me and I'llt take your name off the list, because I'll sure be here and I know most of the rest of us will too.... Well, just recently there was a push on alt.r-n-r.metal for one, and we took it to alt.config, and there seemed to be some support, but it just fizzled out. The problem seemed to be that nobody involved really knew what to do to get the group approved and distributed (someone had created a group on their own, but couldn't get it distributed anywhere, which is how the push got started. You know how some sites are about carrying unapproved alt.* groups). I thought it was a cool idea myself, and obviously there's a demand for Danzig-related info. . . . The Fool ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 May 1994 12:15:26 -0400 (EDT) From: Katherine T Sumner Subject: Rumors As long as we're talking about Misfits rumors, here's a good one: Danzig wrote RATTFINK because Steele wanted to throw rats into the audience as a gimmick. I think an alternate one said that Steele actually threw a live rat at Danzig...hence the hostility.... It does sound like the guy sure got hurt though. Perhaps Jim can help us on this one...? About the Kryst The Conqueror album, I do have 2, one on CD and one on cassette and I still haven't opened the cassette, but I wouldn't sell either of them. I actually saw the disc at a store Saturday, the same place that I got that stuff I was talking about. I saw an advertisement for it in a magazine the other day, so I supsect you can still get it through mail order. About newsgroups, I personally don't like them and probably wouldn't read a Danzig one just because it's a newsgroup. I'd probably get tired of hearing about Mother all the time, since that's all that people seem to know.... Which reminds me, is anyone going to see the Danzig/Metallica shows this summer?
