We got there just as Danzig started - I didn't recognize the 1st 2 songs (they may be off 'Demonsweat...' which I shamefully have to admit I do not have). We found out that our damn seats were right in front of a damn pole - I mean, you couldn't see one thing!!! So we stole some other seats and watched the rest of Danzig. Danzig was kinda disappointing. Chuck's cymbals weren't hooked up to the microphones and no one was into the concert... until 'Mother' (surprise, surprise). It made me mad to see all the MTv fucks getting into the song. As for Metallica - they kicked ass for the sole reason that they played lots of old shit. But the highlight of the show (maybe my life) was when Danzig came out with Metallica and did not 1, not 2, but 3 Misfits songs together. London Dungeon, Last Caress, Green Hell. Can you believe it? It was about some girl named Jem who had a band and also at the same time she was some type of super hero or something. Anyway, there was this rival evil band called The Misfits. They were always trying to do "bad" things or sabotage Jem's concerts or something like that. That was the first time I ever heard of the Misfits. Obviously they weren't the same as our Misfits and they probably had absolutely nothing to do with each other, but it was kind of interesting. In 8th grade my friend was wearing a Misfits shirt and some little kid on our street made some comment that he had heard of the Misfits and liked them a lot better than Jem And The Holograms. Since nobody has had anything to say recently, I decided I'd throw this article in. It took me a while to type up, but maybe somebody will respond to it. Some of you may remember Mike Stax as the guy who interviewed Jerry Only last year in Ugly Things #13. Enjoy. from BLACK MARKET #11, 1994 GLENN DANZIG: MISDIRECTED, MISUNDERSTOOD MISFIT Like all BLACK MARKET readers, I hold the MISFITS in the highest esteem. They had it all: songs, image, power...Let's face it, they fuckin' ruled! That's why today I find myself giving a long, hard listen to Danzig's latest releases, trying to come to grips with what makes the music of Glenn Danzig's post-Misfits career so frustrating. I can't help feeling Danzig's on the wrong course. Musically, I'm convinced the guy's a fuckin' genius, but after three-and-a-half Danzig albums it's now or never for Glenn to lift himself out of the Satanic slime pit and soar again - or else sink into the quicksand of self-parody along with the dying dinosaurs of heavy metal. While 1992's "DANZIG III: HOW THE GODS KILL" still found him tinkering with Satanism and some heavy sludge'n'screech, it's not as bad as some critics painted it - in fact, there's some truly great moments. Rock critics tend to be sheep, afraid to break away from the flock, and Danzig makes himself an easy target for their predictable criticism. For dull-witted rock scribes who don't take the time to listen more closely, it's simple to write off Danzig as just another metal band with a fondness for Satanic symbolism. Danzig is in fact working in a much broader field than this - his music mixes hard rock with more traditional rock'n'roll and blues forms. Unfortunately the mix is a little too cautious - a little more Elvis, Howlin' Wolf and punk rock and a little less Black Sabbath would certainly help his talent come into sharper focus. However, as long as he continues to accentuate the arena-metal side of his music and use images of devils and demons in his lyrics, the critics will continue to cram him into that cramped Satanic Metal pigeonhole. Though some may argue that the heavy rock route is a logical progression from Glenn's previous work, to me it sure seems like a "safe", over-travelled path for a singer who has created some mighty dangerous - and original - music in his past. From 1977 until 1983, with the Misfits, Glenn showed a remarkable gift for matching powerhouse punk rock with inspired melodies and ghoulish B-movie lyrics. The power of the Misfits' music has grown over the years because their records have an originality and honest excitement that few of their peers could match. Ironically, today Glenn refuses to talk about the Misfits, except to berate his old bandmates with a bitterness that reeks of a paranoid urge to rewrite his past - a past which continues to shadow him. After the Misfits, Glenn started to take himself a bit more seriously with Samhain. To draw an appropriate Horror analogy, if the Misfits were an Ed Wood Jr. movie, Samhain were a Dario Argento flick. The songs weren't as memorable as before, but their four releases contain some inspired ideas and genuinely scary atmospheres. Then in 1988, Glenn Danzig went big time. Samhain were signed to Def American, and after a line-up shuffle became simply Danzig - leaving no doubt as to who the "star" was. Ok, so after leaving us ten years of great music with the Misfits and Samhain, who's to begrudge Glenn Danzig his stab at the big time? Well, me for one, because although he still shows he can put a great song together (check out "Twist Of Cain" and "She Rides" from DANZIG or "Her Black Wings" and "Tired Of Being Alive" from LUCIFUGE for proof) and that he can belt it out with one of the most powerful voices in rock'n'roll, I expect something more original and exciting from Danzig than some of the overblown heavy rock he's now cranking out. Heavy metal may sell (though less so in recent years), but at least Danzig avoids some of the more obnoxious trappings of the genre: the testicles- caught-in-the-car-door-vocals, the drumkit big enough to fill a condo unit and (usually) the see-how-many-notes-fast guitar wank. But most of the music is still framed in the same heavy-handed metal casts that have been smelted a million times before by much lesser talents. Worse still, three albums later, Danzig is still grinding out Satanic mumbo- jumbo lyrics like: "Devil on the left; Angel on the right, There's no mistake, who I'll be with tonight, Over in the fore, lamb's head in my lap..." Yeah right, Glenn. And yet he wonders why the critics make fun of him? At least on HOW THE GODS KILL, Glenn had the sense to lay aside his Satanic thesaurus for a few songs, so there's a few more dimensions at work here than on previous Danzig albums. Hopefully, this is a hint that he's ready to break out of the self-imposed limitations of his Satanic metal straitjacket. Unfortunately, Danzig, chose to lead off the album with "Godless", a pretentious thud-rock epic complete with a "poetic" sermon segment which is as groan-inducing as old Jimbo Morrison at his worst. After this, things can only get better, and luckily they do. "Anything" is - gasp! - a love song with a lean, dynamic arrangement and the kind of great changes and melodies we expect from a Misfit. The song rises and falls in volume, riding on a haunting, jangling guitar melody before roaring into flames for its climax. Definitely one of the album's winners. There's a touch of "Smokestack Lightning" to "Bodies," a dark, bluesy pounder which works well - even though it sounds like Danzig's gargling tadpoles on the chorus. Guitarist John Christ and bassist Eerie Von keep things refreshingly raw and basic over Chuck Biscuits' powerful backbeat, leaving Glenn to scream out some morbid, charnel house lyrics. Pretty cool. Also good is the tile track, which - aside from some intermittent chalkboard guitar screech - is a magnificently dramatic piece with the vocals showing an impressive depth and restraint. Even better, he delivers a chilling performance on "Sistinas", a love ballad that might even send a shiver down the spine of his hero Roy Orbison. Like Orbison, Glenn's voice is his greatest weapon, wand when he puts it to good use - as on the previous two tracks - its force can be deadly. These quieter songs pack far more emotional power than more conventional metal-by-numbers fist pumpers like "Left Hand Black" and "When The Dying Calls". HOW THE GODS KILL plus witnessing Danzig's dynamic live show in person gave me the hope for the future direction of the misdirected, misunderstood Misfit. The newest release, THRALL-DEMONSWEAT E.P., doesn't break any new ground, combining three new studio recordings with four live tracks. Elvis Presley's "Trouble" (written by Leiber & Stoller) was an inspired choice for Danzig's first ever cover song - it could've been written for him - but Glenn's great vocal is smeared by too much tacky guitar work, which is a shame. The other two studio tracks ("It's Coming Down" and "Violet Fire") are powerful but generally unexceptional. That leaves the live cuts, recorded on Halloween 1992 at Irvine Meadows. They sound just fine, particularly "Sistinas" and "Mother", but they're nothing to work up a sweat about - demon or otherwise. So we'll just have to see what he does next. If he can push aside the metal borders he's drawn around himself and move into more creative and individual territories, Danzig may find he can "make it" on his own terms. Maybe he thinks he's doing that now, but I think he's smarter than that. I'll be waiting for his next move. by Mike Stax ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 September 1994 From: She Subject: Danzig update Well, I hope somebody noticed that Danzig 4p didn't come out today. First it was supposed to come out in July, then August, then September, and now supposedly it has been pushed out to October 4. And why? Because the artwork hasn't been finished. The art is being done by the same guy who did Black Aria and it hasn't been finished yet. In other Danzig news, Glenn has gotten his comic book company together and comics should be coming out in the next few months. The company is called Verotik, which is a combination of Violent and Erotic. One of the comic books will be about a character that Glenn created, although he will not be doing any artwork himself. And finally... Danzig will supposedly begin touring in the next few months and will hit the D.C. area around November (for those of us in that area). His metal side developped since the first Danzig is basically trash in my mind. Not to discount all his latest songs, but the metal guitar solos and general already used up metal quality should be lost. I don't think a return to the Misfits style is appropriate because the Misfits are done with and Jerry and Doyle were too much an intergral part of that band. Nor should Danzig go backwards to Samhain in my opinion. What he needs is some ingenuity which he seems to have a ready supply of. Just lately the well has been running a little dry. Also I think what made the Misfits was a new kind of music. That is what Danzing needs right now. Because although i still like his booming voice and the power of the bands music it has gotton a little repetitive and old. sunday ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Sep 1994 22:24:48 -0400 From: ekennedy@cap.gwu.edu (Ethan Kennedy) Subject: Re: Misfits Bible, #13 Hello there Misfits buddies. Of course I buy every new album, but this "bad boy of rock" thing is a little thick for me. It used to be a big deal to see an interview with Glenn, but now MTV has made his face commonplace to every rebellious screaming teenage girl in the country. Not that I don't believe this is what he's wanted from the start. In one Samhain interview, Glenn acquiesced, "There's nothing wrong with having a lot of people like your band." And with the Misfits it seems he was very professional, what with photo sessions after band practices, I believe he's been wanting to crack into the mainstream for a long time. Who can blame him? Fame and fortune are pretty cool. True, MTV is probably the most lucrative vehicle a musician could ever hope to have at his or her disposal. Still... it's MTV, for crying out loud. I for one will never be able to see Danzig (the band, or the man for that matter) in a big arena. The two times I have seen them live were in clubs about the size of a very large movie theater (in fact, that's what one of those clubs used to be), where I could get swept up in the pit, thrust up to the stage, flip off the band indignantly, and subsequently be flown back into oblivion once again. Now THAT's a show!! If I have to sit in a damn chair with people around me holding up cigarette lighters, forget it! Personally, I believe Glenn should just nut out and go into Wagnerian opera. You know his voice could never hold out through an entire performance, but it surely must be some fantasy of his. Okay, maybe it's a fantasy of mine, I don't know!! Later, folks... I set up another mailing list a year or two ago, which was plagued with problems often relating to my constantly losing accounts. I went by "Isaac N. Truder" back then -- I.N.Truder, get it?? But anyway, on to the business at hand... Concerning JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS, I wonder if Danzig didn't know about it as well? Becuase die-hard Sunday morning cartoon watchers (JEM never seemed to rate an actual Saturday morning slot around here) will know, in the last season of the cartoon the wicked Misfits kinda mysteriously disappeared, to be replaced by another band known as "The Stingers". Was a lawsuit involved? We may never know. But beyond being just cartoon characters, the alleged bands from JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS released little cassette singles which were included with the dolls. That would mean that Mattell (or whoever made the dolls) was releasing music recordings under the name "The Misfits", which would infringe on Glenn & Co.'s territory. And as far as personalities are concerned, I never met any of the members of the Misfits besides Glenn, though I have met the whole line-up of Danzig. I've met Glenn a couple of times and he always seems fairly cordial and nice. He doesn't necessarily give you french kisses for being his fan, but he doesn't come off as a dick at all, and he will at least give you a nod and a "How you doing". I was impressed by Eerie Von, who seems like a swell guy. I asked him about his appearance on the first Danzig home video, where he gave the impression like he sat around, drank, and played video games all day, and he kinda laughed it off and proceeded to gab away at me about the Misfits and other things. Crimson Ghost ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Sep 1994 01:04:45 -0500 (CDT) From: Belle Wood Subject: bible Call me naive, but I thought that the whole point of putting a record out was to get it heard. I could be wrong about this, and if I am, will gladly bow to concurring opinion. So, why all this enmity about Danzig suddenly getting played on Mtv? I understand that perhaps fans are afraid that once Danzig gets some airplay, they'll all turn Vegas, but is this really plausible? We know that's not going to happen, since Glenn is SOOOO self-limited in his satanic imagery. This is something else that I don't understand. Satanic imagery has been used to make a point since written history. Charles Baudelaire? The Marquise de Sade? Diamanda Galas? No one would call these people self-limited and yet all use satan as a symbol for the ills of society. I understand also what was meant when this term was used, and I agree somewhat: As a band, Danzig is capable of so much more. Still if they did fulfill this un-satanic potential that they have, all we would see is more of what we've seen so far: people calling them sell-outs. So why should they even try? As long as Glenn is pleasing himself, perhaps he shouldn't worry about pleasing anyone else. For those who still insist that Danzig is too much for them, it seems that this album has toned down on the satanism, although the violence is still rampant within. ------------------------------ From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" Subject: Hullo everybody... Date: Wed, 21 Sep 94 13:35:00 edt Hi, I'm new to this - just found out about it last week on Usenet in alt.music.danzig so thanx out to Crimson Ghost for spreading the word. Thanks also to Mark for e-mailing me all the back issues for which I am truly grateful as I am as far gone as him. Hope to get a chance to contribute & comment quite a bit... As for "have I ever met any of the Misfits" - yes....oh yes, 5 of 'em so far! I've known Glenn for a little over 4 years now - met him first on the Lucifuge tour and have gotten to be pretty good friends with him & EV. You have to understand, my friends and I are like the black clad version of Deadheads and we truly will follow them anywhere and love any excuse for a long road trip. Where ever. It was worth the 3,000 mile trip to see the look on everybody's faces when we showed up in Seattle for the first show of the "How the Gods Kill Tour"!! (I'm from Maryland, my friends from North Carolina) I've seen 'em dozens upon dozens of times (actually 52 shows at last count from 1990-94 - I first heard them right after their first LP came out & missed the first tour due to my father's death and associated problems and then decided I would make up for lost time). And I know a lot of you will put down Glenn any chance you get so I want to report what I know from personal experience. Overall he is VERY friendly to his fans and after almost every show will sit in the front of the bus and sign autographs and chat until everybody is taken care of - the few times this hasn't happened that I've seen has been because of other problems beyond the bands control, such as cops chasing away crowds, buses parked in inaccessable places (i.e. under buildings) or whatever. Even when he's not on tour & we've just been walking down the street or whatever he's always been glad to sign autographs when people asked for it. The only times I've seen him get upset is when people repeatedly pushed him and kept bugging him with stupid questions or wanting him to sign bootlegs (which he will not do and I can't say I blame him for that). And personally I can't blame him for not wanting to talk about the Misfits and getting a bit irritated when that's all people will bring up - fact is, they broke up 11 years ago and he's done a lot since and he's just not interested in talking about what's now "ancient history to him". His music now is a lot different - I know some of you don't like it but hey, I'd rather see him do something different than just keep doing the same thing year after year like the Ramones (and I do like the Ramones, I'm not intending to put them down!) Hell, I'd be pissed if somebody only wanted to ask me about what I'd done that long ago... Anyway, he's been REALLY nice to me and my friends and has put us on the guest lists, given us backstage passes to their parties etc etc. He's also given me some really cool stuff (like one of the pendants he's got in the "Its Coming Down" video that they never made for sale, also gave me a TON of promo stuff at the San Diego Comic Con last month where he had a booth set up to promote his new company Verotik) EV is also VERY cool and a lot of fun to hang out and talk to. Actually he's more interested in talking about the Misfits & has told me some cool stories - remember he was also there at the time as their photographer/roadie/whatever and also collects stuff. He writes me from time to time to let me know what's up (yes, new album will come out October 4th and so far they've done one video for it "Until You Call on the Dark". They are playing Irvine Meadows in LA on Halloween, then new tour should start mid November but no dates firm yet) Hope he likes what I sent him for his b'day - when I went shopping with Glenn in San Diego I found a model kit of a zombie Elvis that Glenn & I thought he'd like so I grabbed it & painted it up & sent it off for his birthday (since he's also a huge Elvis collector) Chuck is pretty cool and laid back, haven't hung out much with him; John is actually pretty reserved and I suspect slightly shy but he's very sweet. As for the others - I've also known Bobby Steele for years - met him through some friend s of mine who used to be in the Undead. Bobby is very friendly and fun to hang around - he's also always happy to talk to fans and sign stuff (I've sometimes joked that Undead records NOT signed by Bobby Steele are actually rarer than ones that are) Bobby has had a LOT of medical problems dogging him over the years but he's never given up, he takes his motto "Never Say Die" VERY seriously! And even though he's not such a great singer he's a very good guitarist and can write real catchy songs & the Undead are loads of fun live - I think they come closest to preserving the feel of the early poppy punk sound of the Misfits. Through Bobby I got to meet Joey Image last December - Bobby had just run into Joey while walking down the street in NYC & Bobby asked him if he'd be interested in joining the Undead on stage for old times sake and Joey was happy too, so last December at Webster Hall he joined them for a bunch of old Misfits tunes which was a LOT of fun! (Thanks to Bobby I found out about it - he called to tell me & put me on the guest list) I don't think Joey even realized how huge a following the Misfits have now since they were so obscure back when he was in the band - he seemed really amazed that I knew who he was when Bobby introduced me (I had to laugh, Bobby introduced me as "the expert" and said "I knew everything". Hardly but I'm trying!) But I got him to sign a few things & pose for some photos. He's mostly working doing construction in the NY area. Met Jerry and Doyle once also, at the May 1993 Chiller Theater horror convention - Jerry had set up at a table there & was passing out free posters & Kryst CDs and casettes - he gave me a poster & tape (I already had the CD) & signed them for me & got Doyle to sign the tape too. Jerry was very friendly & it was cool of him to give all that stuff away. Doyle was very quiet, I don't think I heard him talk to anybody. I only wish I'd have known they would be there as I would have LOVED to get them to sign my leather jacket - I've got the cover to "Walk Among" us painted on the back & its already signed by Glenn; I'd love to get the rest of them to sign it some day. (Anybody know what happened to Robo? I'd heard he worked with Jerry) Sorry if some of ya think Danzig sick or have sold out just because MTV have picked up on them. I think it's kinda funny that MTV suddenly picked up on a song that came out 6 years ago that they hardly ever played when it was new - blame it all on Beevis & Butthead, just like White Zombie's sudden surge in popularity (I'm sure the Zombies are puzzled - they'd been touring & plugging away "La Sexorcisto" for ages before they suddenly got "discovered") Hey, if they can make some money doing what they want to do, more power to them - how many people can actually do that! I'd rather have them able to do their music full time rather than have to work another job like most people in bands do! They are certainly not tailoring their songs to the tastes of mainstream America to sell more records. Would a band trying to be commercial take Genitorturers on the road with them or make a video like "It's Coming Down"?? Besides, I REALLY doubt they'd ever get so huge that they'd become "arena rockers" (aside from the opening slot for Metallica) as I think that Glenn just makes too many people too nervous to ever become that "acceptable". All the headlining shows I've ever seen them do were in small to medium sized venues, aside from the one Halloween show at Irvine Meadows where they taped the live part of "Thrall". So flame me..... I'm behind them all the way. Re; JEM and the Holograms. Hey, does anybody have a picture of Jem? I'm just asking because my room mate has offered to make me a fake animation cell of "Jem and the Holograms vs. the Misfits - the REAL Misfits" but we need a reference for her to draw from! On an earlier thread - my three fav Misfits tunes are probably "Last Caress", "London Dungeon" and "American Nightmare", followed by "Angelfuck", "Where Eagles Dare", "She" and all the rest... Mark Buehner - I've got a pretty complete discography of all the legitimately released stuff (Misfits, Samhain, Danzig, Undead, Kryst, Rosemary's Babies, Mourning Noise etc etc) I can photocopy it & send it to ya if you give me a snail mail addy - its WAY too long to retype in here!! I'll look up the Undead stuff and post those... more to follow when I get a chance!! Sorry if I'm monopolizing things any - well, Mark told me he'd like to see some longer posts! ; ) - Elizabeth ------------------------------ From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" Subject: Undead discography! Date: Thu, 22 Sep 94 17:43:00 edt For those who are interested, here's what will be coming out through Glenn's new comic company Verotik: Out now: ILLUSTRATIONS ARCANUM, large soft cover book of all new pencil drawings by Frank Frazetta - gorgeous work! Out in October: VEROTIKA #1 - first issue of new horror anthology. This will include the first chapter of "Satanika" which will later come out as its own series - written by Glenn and illustrated by Simon ("Lobo") Bisley (who also did the cover to Thrall-Demonsweat live). I've got photocopies of the art to this and its WILD! (definitely a "mature audiences" kinda thang, might have some problems crossing the border...) I think this issue is also going to have an illustrated version of the short story "Demon Lover" by Nancy Collins that was anthologized in the book "Hotter Blood". Cover by Biz! PHANTOM LADY - trade paperback reprint of 50's good girl art, new cover by Adam Hughes ALPHABET OF MURDER - illustrated alphabet of famous murderers by Bad Otis Link (who did the "Cannibal Trading Cards" earlier this year along with Chuck Biscuits and Rob Zombie) Link found so many killers to draw he might have to do a few volumes! Out in December - SATANIKA #1 Other projects in the future will be a series based on Frazetta's Death Dealer character drawn by Bisley with covers by Frazetta. These will have NOTHING to do with the "Death Dealer" novels that came out way back; they've totally rewritten the character since Glenn felt he'd be a lot more of a badass than in those cheesey paperbacks. Glenn's also negotiating currently with famed Japanese comic artist Go Nagai to translate and reprint some of his work for the US market. He's been ultra famous for at least 20 -25 years in Japan but hardly known in this country, so its about time his stuff made it to these shores!. (He's best known as the creator of Devilman, Cutey Honey, Mazinga, Violence Jack & tons of other stuff) Verotik will also be doing graphic adaptations of Nancy Collin's Sonja Blue Vampire novels (Sunglasses after Dark etc) Art on these possibly by Tony Harris. They'll also be doing an illustrated version of the incredible short story by Grant Morrison "The Braille Encyclopedia" which also appeared in the "Hotter Blood" anthology. Keep in mind that Verotik comes from Violent and Erotic, so most of what they'll put out will be definitely along those lines! Other artists they'll be publishing in the future will include Rob Zombie & Tim Vigil. Vigil has just finished the T shirt design for the upcoming tour & might be working with Glenn on their next video. ------------------------------------- To contribute to the next issue, please send email to: misfits@virginia.edu For more information, or for back issues, contact Mark Kennedy at: msk4m@watt.seas.virginia.edu The views expressed here are those of the individual authors only. Elizabeth named hers and also commented on GD's losing the popiness in his music. GD made the right move going towards the bluesy style he's adopted recently, the cover of 'Trouble' was a perfect example of this (Christ is that tune great.) That popiness that Elizabeth (may I call you Liz?) spoke of is exactly what made the Misfits a great band to begin with. The simplicity of the music and truly fantastic lyrics, sung by the bastard son of Jim Morrison and Elvis Presley, was the key to success back then. It's to bad the record company exec's were to slow to realize that. All this leads me to my original point of a fav. song which is without a doubt 'Hollywood Babylon' the title is a take off on a book by (I forget who wrote it anybody know??) the book is about the dark underground world of hollywood, for the most part so is the song. Jerry taught me how to play it in 15 mins. the vocals took much longer to memorize but finally after asking him 50 times I have them down. Listening to the tune you get the feeling of listening to older "Surfing" music especially when doyle hits the Emin chord when glenn sings the lon in babylon this chord is repeated at the end of every other verse. It's kinda like weird musical punctuation. The song is a perfect example of a great punk tune. Sorry that I'm rambling though this post but i'm just thinkin' with my fingers ;o) I'll end this post now with the "Correct" lyrics-----CG Who came along for the ride Hey, you can't come inside do the citizens kneel for sex it's heaven cummin' on that chest Hollywood Babylon (2X) Flesh ancient monster design unless you wanna crop that size where did they come from tonight who came along for the ride Hollywood Babylon (2X) Who came along for the ride hey you, you can't come inside well do the cititzens kneel for sex it's heaven cummin' on that chest Hollywood Babylon (4X) (Simple but very effective it hooked me!) ------------------------------ From: CrmsnGhost@aol.com Date: Mon, 26 Sep 94 18:36:54 EDT Subject: Re: Singer Post Our favorite pair of brothers - Jerry and Doyle are looking for a new lead singer. Box 310 Vernon, NJ 07462 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Sep 1994 22:35:59 -0400 From: She Subject: Tonight Tonight my roommate and I did our radio show and played a handful of Misfiits tunes and the new Danzig "Until You Call On The Dark" song. Anyway, last week was Doyle's 30th birthday and we all forgot. What's the world coming to? Saturday was a wonderful day for me. I talked to both Jerry Only and Franche Coma on the phone. I still have never actually met either of them, but I guess we're phone buddies. I wrote down a lot of things from those conversations so I'll share some of the highlights. The last Misfits drummer, the unnamed kid from the Ugly Things interview, was named Brian Damage. He was with them for 2 weeks and only played one song at their last show. At the first Misfits show, our guys played some of these songs: She, Bullet, Hollywood Babylon, Feline Nursery (the original version of Spinal Remains), In The Doorways (a song that was dropped when Glenny dropped the keyboards), and a few others that were never released. If someone has a bootleg of that show, I'd sure like to hear it. As of now, the oldest known live recordings of our guys are the 12/20/78 recording of Attitude from the Flipside LP and the Summer/79 boot called "Live 79! A Perfect Crime" Right, Elizabeth? And of course the most recent live recording is of the last show. What else - The Misfits did do a version of Archangel that was never actually recorded. They also used to cover Iggy Pop's "I Got A Right" and there was once a song called "Mephisto Waltz" which Jerry described as one of Glenn's rare strikeouts. In '86 there was a little piece in Thrasher that said that Glenn had found the Master tapes to these 2 songs, but Jerry said they were never recorded. More? Franche was in some band in 1980 that released an album but I can't remember the name of it. He is still living in Lodi, as is Mr. Jim. Bobby still lives nearby and Googy can still be found in NY. Robo also lives in Lodi and was actually hanging out with Jerry, Doyle, and their brother Rocky when he called me. I learned a lot of interesting things about the type of guitar Franche played and stuff like that. I don't know, it was exciting. Those guys are really nice and a lot of fun... Anyway, this looks like it will be a short issue. Too bad. Our last was HUGE. How about this - If you could choose a Misfits setlist of about 20 songs, what would you choose? Personally I'd want to hear- She / Last Caress / Some Kinda Hate / Hollywood Babylon / Return Of The Fly / Night Of The Living Dead (7" style, not the album version) / Come Back Theme For A Jackal (probably the most underrated Misfits tune) / American Nightmare / Angelfuck / Bullet / Static Age / Cough/Cool / Hate Breeders / Bloodfeast / We Are 138 That would be enough for me. I would die if I saw the Misfits doing that setlist.... ADIOS---- ----------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 26 Sep 1994 22:52:59 -0400 From: Slowdive Subject: Amazing Misfits Fans! I started listening to the Misfits in 1986 and I never thought I would ever learn this much about some tiny hardcore band that in the 7th grade I could never understand the lyrics to. But hey it sounded cool was hard and fast and everything most people aren't different. It is amazing that now I know an absolute Misfits authority-Mark Kennedy and by extension (by being his roommate) all the best collectors around the county. Anyways in response to Crimson Ghost: I have heard Jerry and Doyle have a table at the Horror Convention in NY. First of all what exactly is at the Horror convention? Film, comics, literature, music, etc??? And is Jerry's table for Cryst the Conqueror or the Misfits or what? And are they decked out with Devilocks and Skull armbands or more standard Cryst wear? An interesting side note on Devilocks, when I was 14 I asked my Mother at dinner if I could have one. As a good Christian she obviously had no clue what I was talking about and was totally repulsed by the idea. I just wanted to look like a Misfits, not some satanic crap. thanks ma. paul. . ------------------------------ From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" Subject: Chuck Biscuits has quit Danzig Date: Tue, 27 Sep 94 09:06:00 edt Rumors have been floating for the last few weeks but I finally have some "official" news - Eerie finally changed the message on the Danzig hot line last night after a week and says yes, Chuck is gone. According to EV Chuck quit on them; he just didn't want to be in the band anymore. The rest of them are sorry to see him go and still think he's the best drummer around and any band he joins will be 100% better with him in it, but the three of them are still going to continue since its what they want to do. The Halloween show is still scheduled; I guess they'll find somebody to replace him for that (and record release is still October 4th - only a week away now) EV promised he'd post more info on the machine when he had it.... if you ever want to check out their "hot line" yourself, the # is (213) 489-6164 - I generally call it every few day or two to see what's up. ------------------------------ From: CrmsnGhost@aol.com Date: Tue, 27 Sep 94 00:35:54 EDT Subject: Re: misfits In personal email writes: >Heard the new danzig single tonight and well.... you know... well... >It wasn't good. First off, what Lemonheads record has the acoustic version of "Skulls" on the B side? I'd love to pick it up - bet it would be fun. Secondly, does anybody here have access to a cable channel called "The Box" (or maybe its "The Music Box"??) or know somebody who does. A long while back they ran a pretty long Danzig interview clip (Filmed in FL when they were opening for Black Sabbath in 1992) and last year the same station was taping the Jacksonville, FL show I was at. I've never been able to find anybody who got this station but I figured it was worth asking - I'm willing to pay $$$ or trade lots of rare stuff on tape (Misfits, Samhain, Danzig) if anybody has this they'd be willing to dub for me!! Please let me know if you've got it or know somebody who does! If someone told you that there was a possibility that the Misfits would reunite, what would you want them to sound like or look like for that matter???? I mean really the easy answer is to say that you wouldn't want them to change a bit, right? That's what I said also, but, when you think about it what would a bunch of thirty-something ex-punkers look like or sound like trying to keep up with their past?? I don't think it would work. I think they would fall into the same category they did in the first place; A NOVELTY ACT!! It didn't work for them then, and it won't work now. Back then they couldn't compete with bands like The Sex Pistols, The Dead Boys, The Buzzcocks, need I go on. Why couldn't they?? I don't think it was the music. Their music for the most part was just as good, just as raw, just as violent. I think nobody took them seriously back then because nothing but nothing was done right. They never got *real* record company backing, why, I don't know. What I do know is this; it would be a mistake to go out today in the old monster uniforms trying to recreate what they did back then. I think if they do it now what they should do is go out like any other rock band and be themselves. Trust me I know these guys their not zombies or supernatural they're regular guys. I just think they owe it to themselves to go out and be themselves, *not* a sideshow. Date: Wed, 28 Sep 94 16:16:00 edt Any of you who ever wondered where the names "Plan 9" and "Vampira" came from should definitely check out the upcoming film ED WOOD directed by Tim Burton (my fav current director who's previously done such gems as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas and of course the two Batman movies... just in case any of ya have been in space or cyrogenically frozen for the last few years....) Anyway, ED WOOD is about the director responsible for the cult fav & frequent nominee for the title of "worst movie of all time", Plan 9 From Outer Space! One of the "stars" of Plan 9 (in the non speaking role of a walking zombie with killer looks) was Vampira, a 50's TV horror hostess who's gimmick was later copied widely by imitators like Elvira, etc. In real life she was an actress named Maila Nurmi who did few other films (the only other one I can remember offhand was "Sex Kittens Go to College" with Mamie Van Doren) and was widely rumored to have been James Dean's paramour & dabbling in witchcraft. Of course we've all heard the Misfits tribute to her on WALK AMONG US - after they released it they tracked down the reclusive star to play it for her & pose for a few photos. One appeared in an early issue of FLIPSIDE, another is on the collage poster that came with the FLIPSIDE VINYL FANZINE Vol. 2 that has a live version of "Attitude" on it. She still lives in LA and occasionally appears at conventions and sells some of her artwork (mostly self portraits). In ED WOOD Vampira will be played by Tim Burton's girlfriend Lisa Marie. Ed Wood himself will be played by Johnny Depp, with Martin Landau also appearing as Bela Lugosi. Plan 9 was the last role for ol' Bela - actually his part was cobbled together after his death with a short bit of footage shot right before he died. (For the rest of the film his part was played by Wood's dentist holding a cape over his lower face!) Wood had befriended the aging star who was battling morphine addiction at the time and was tried to make a comeback for him (or just cash in on his name) but unfortunately Ed's films were terrible. (His others include "Bride of the Monster" also with Bela Lugosi and the quasi documentary "Glen or Glenda" inspired by Wood's own transvestism. I've heard GREAT reviews from the few people I know who've seen it and the TV ads so far look intriguing. It'll be sneak previewing this weekend and I THINK it goes into general release in about a week - can't wait to see it! There are some great articles related to it in the current issue of CINEFANTASTIQUE magazine. On a slightly related tangent, I can answer Crimson Ghost's question - the title HOLLYWOOD BABYLON comes from a book by Kenneth Anger about all the scandals that have rocked Hollyweird through the years. Anger is one weird dude - I saw a few of his short films like "Lucifer Rising" in a college film course and they are pretty out-there..... (the sort of thing Trent Reznor would turn into a video...) Gee, with so many Misfits titles coming from movies or directly inspired by ones you could have a great all night bad movie fest..... How about: Teenagers from Outer Space (maybe not Mars, but close) She (who must be obeyed...) Horror Hotel (Hammer classic!) Night of the Living Dead (George Romero's first and greatest!) Where Eagles Dare Astro Zombies (the Monster from) Green Hell Bloodfeast (Hershel Gorden Lewis presents...) Die Die My Darling Return of the Fly (with Vincent Price!) Psycho (definite inspiration for "Horror Business") Add in Oliver Stone's J.F.K. to tie in with "Bullet", ah hell, the Zapruder footage is better & inspired the 7" sleeve! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Sep 1994 15:52:17 -0500 (EST) From: stephen alan sisson Subject: Lyrics and crap of the like The real words to Hollywood Babylon... damn, that's cool. He is going to audition for Warrior Soul, so if they take him, the Undead will become a side project for him. The band is currently working on recording material for an album in the future but has no plans for touring. In fact, they have only played 2 times in the past year - one the show Elizabeth saw and a benefit show in February. Both shows featured Joey Image on drums. Date: Fri, 30 Sep 94 12:17:00 edt After I sent the last post it ocurred to me that I should mention that the most obvious cinematic tribute is the name "The Misfits" itself! I've no doubt that the idea for the name came at least in part from the 1961 John Huston film of the same name starring Montgomery Cliff, Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe - tragically it was the last film for both Gable and Monroe. This didn't occur to me, however, until I landed a copy of the first-ever Misfits single "Cough/Cool" as the back cover gives "thanks to Marilyn, Clark & Monty". And then of course Glenn did his tribute to Marilyn on the "Who Killed Marilyn" solo 7" (with an early Misfits version coming out years later the "Legacy of Brutality" LP) Oh, there is also a GREAT pic of the Misfits and Vampira printed in the UGLY THINGS Misfits issue that came out last year. Anybody who doesn't have this zine yet REALLY needs a copy - it's got an incredibly long Jerry Only interview that gives a pretty good overview of the history of the band plus reproduces a ton of rare early photos, most of them never before seen. Highly recommended!! You can probably still order them for $6 ppd from Mike Stax, 405 West Washington St #237, San Diego, CA 921203 (a shameless plug) Here's a bit of a plea - the Danzig hot line just updated their message and Glenn's going off on a tour of radio stations to do a bunch of interviews to promote the next LP. (And no, I have absolutely NO idea who will be drumming - but it will be a good practice for whomever before they play Irvine Meadows on Halloween!!) Heard a _very_ unconfirmed rumor (from a friend in Oregon who heard it on the radio) that their tour will start Nov. 15th with Type O Negative opening for them (yeah! They are another of my current favs...) Wanted to comment on a few posts in the last BIBLE - Crimson Ghost - yes of course you can call me Liz! (All my friends do and I'll basically answer to most things besides "hey you". And my little niece Claudia can calls me "Lizzie Bat" - she came up with that when she couldn't quite say "Elizabeth" but I think its great!) Anyway, thanks for posting the "Hollywood Babylon" lyrics - REALLY appreciate it!! If you have any others I'm sure we'd all love to see 'em - I know I would!! The only Misfits lyrics I have are the ones that came with the "Bullet" & "Halloween" singles & the "Walk Among Us" lyric sheet. Yeah, that tune sure is like 50's surf music (have some great Ventures LPs I found at the Salvation army for a dime each!) A lot of the early songs have a great 50's kinda feel to them. One of my favs is "American Nightmare" which is pure rockabilly style. I love that song, plus it sounds so much like something the Cramps would have done. Gee, are you familiar with their stuff?? Now that's another TRULY great whacked out psychotronic punk band doing an "Elvis from Hell" kinda number. I HIGHLY recommend their stuff to any fans of the early Misfits songs - particularly their first LP "Songs the Lord Taught Us" & the EP "Gravest Hits". Songs like "Garbage Man", "TV Set" and "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" are definitely in the same kinda lyrical territory as the 'Fits. But hey, I have to say I certainly don't mind that Danzig has moved away from "Poppy" songs and towards more bluesy stuff. I LOVE the Blues - my roomie and I have a TON of blues CDs like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, the recent Chess boxed sets. My roomie Judy really goes for a lot of the Delta & Beltonia stuff - man, you wanna talk dark, devil inspired music, there's TONS of it there!! (so actually he's following a very traditional form!) Hey, I'd be perfectly happy to hear a "Danzig Live Unplugged" acoustic night - between Glenn's voice and John Christ's guitar it would be awesome. Many of my fav Danzig songs are the ones closest to traditional blues, like "I'm the One" or "Heart of the Devil" (hearing that live at Irvine Meadows on Halloween '92 was one of the most incredible moments of my life - I was devastated that it didn't appear on "Thrall" as it was the best number they did that night) Mark Kennedy - Thanks for the Misfits info, especially enjoyed reading the early set list, man I'd KILL to hear a tape of the 'Fits covering Iggy Pop back then! I've got the original single by Iggy & James Williamson (of the Stooges) doing "I Got a Right"/"Gimmee Some Skin" and it rocks! Hmm - ideal 20 song set list... whoa, that's a toughie, but like you I prefer the early songs (though I was pleased to note you did include "Bloodfeast" which is easily my fav from Earth A.D. - partly probably because it is the slowest....) How about: Bullet/ She/ Hollywood Babylon/ Attitude/ Horror Business/ Teenagers from Mars/ Last Caress/ Return of the Fly/ American Nightmare/ Where Eagles Dare/ We Are 138/ Cough Cool/ Theme for a Jackal/ London Dungeon/ Vampira/ Skulls/ Night of the Living Dead/ Astrozombies/ Wolf's Blood and Rat Fink (great for a sing-a-long closer) (And very sorry if I left out somebody's favs - it was VERY hard to pare it down to 20!) And yes, sadly there isn't much in the way of early live records floating out there - the best early one is easily the "Live 79 A Perfect Crime" 7". The earliest video I know of is one from Detroit in 1980 with Googy on drums - they even have a coffin on the stage. (I've got a copy but it's not great quality - but back then camcorders were pretty primitive too!) So when is Doyle's b'day?? Can you narrow it down a little more than ":last week" - I'd like to know! (The only b'days I know are the guys in Danzig - I'd like to know the rest of them if anybody knows!) Paul asks "what exactly is a Horror Convention?" Well, if you've heard of Star Trek cons, or things like that, its very similar except its entirely devoted to the horror genre (all aspects - movies, books, TV shows etc). The primary attraction is a dealer's room where people will set up tables to sell stuff - it's a VERY good place to go and pick up hard to find items (books, comics, art, toys, movie posters & stills, model kits etc) but often you'll have to pay a premium price as the dealers pretty much know what they've got. They also show films, videos and have appearances by genre celebrities like famous horror actors & actresses, "Scream Queens", writers, artists etc. FANGORIA magazine runs a few a year and "Chiller Theater" up in northern NJ do two excellent shows a year; one in May and the other around Halloween - the one coming up will be Oct 28-30 at the Meadowlands Hilton in Seacaucus NJ. If anybody is interested in going you can e-mail me for further info & directions - I'll definitely be there for the whole weekend (look for a gal with long dyed black hair past her butt wearing a "Walk Among Us" jacket...) When I saw Jerry and Doyle at the Chiller con in May of '93 they didn't have any special set up - just posters & a box of CD's and tapes on a table. They weren't all dressed up either - they were wearing pretty normal everyday street clothes. I recognized Jerry immediately because of the tattoo on his arm - I wouldn't have known who Doyle was except that Jerry introduced him to me since his hair is brown and was kinda short & he doesn't have a "devilock" anymore. Think that's all for now!! - Fiendishly, Elizabeth ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Sep 1994 15:08:12 -0400 From: She Subject: Something I've always thought about.... Does anyone who has Danzig's Thrall notice the similarity between "It's Coming Down" and "Violet Fire" ? Besides the fact that these 2 songs kick ass, they both use the same guitar part during their songs. I'm talking about the part in Violet Fire that John plays while Glenn sings "I'm gonna make it easy". That same riff turns up in "It's Coming Down" in a much heavier fashion. And another thing I've always noticed. 2 of the first Misfits songs I ever heard were Hollywood Babylon and Theme For A Jackal. In Jackal there's one line that he sings the same way he would sing "who came along for the ride" and so I got them mixed up for a while... Otherwise, off it goes to the used record store. bastifer jones ------------------------------ From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" Subject: Misfits Take II Date: Mon, 03 Oct 94 13:45:00 edt In the last issue Crimson Ghost brought up the subject of if "the Misfits would reunite, what would you want them to sound like or look like for that matter?" It's an interesting question, and one I've been thinking about for the last few weeks since I started hearing such rumors. First off, I don't think there's any chance of a true Misfits reunion. In my opinion any TRUE reunion would have to feature both Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only as those two were the common thread of every line up from 1977 to 1983. And I just can't imagine those two ever reuniting for ANY reason - there's too much bad blood between them to ever "kiss and make up". I think that if Jerry and Doyle were to get a new singer it would no more be "the Misfits" than having Bobby Steele & Joey Image performing Misfits songs (which I'll be the first to admit was a hell of a lot of fun for somebody who'd never gotten a chance to see the Misfits & is still kicking herself for not knowing who they were at the time) If they (J&D) did it would be like the Doors without Jim Morrison - and don't laugh, because that's what THEY did after he died (or disappeared of whatever....) - believe it or not they actually recorded two post-Morrison albums with Ray Manzarek singing which are thankfully forgotten. But I really don't think you can replace such a crucial element of the band. Plus it brings up the question of "would there be any new songs?". If so, its hard to imagine what they'd sound like, being as Glenn wrote all the original Misfits tunes. Would they be new ones in the style of those? Of go off in another direction entirely? And of course the other question is "which Misfits" since the line up changed so much the whole direction really changed over the years from a poppy early punk band in the late 70's to the later faster hardcore sounds & horror image of '82/83. If you say "The Misfits" I think the image of the later version of the band is what immediately pops to mind; snarling Glenn flanked by two huge musclebound devilocked twins of evil clad in black leather with huge metal spikes poppin' out - dudes you'd never wanna cross. Let's face it, 99% of their fans nowadays never saw them. At the time they were together they were pretty obscure - in '80/81 I lived less than a hundred miles away and worked as a DJ for most of the punk clubs in Philadelphia & went to shows in NYC almost weekly. I saw bands like The Clash, the Damned, Blondie, Dead Boys, Bauhaus, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys etc but I never ever heard of the Misfits. All those other bands got some press, articles, airplay on college stations but not the Misfits. Hey, there's a reason those each 7"s go for a hundred bucks or more a pop - because nobody bought them at the time. But those 99% of the fans would love to see something like how they imagine the Misfits to be. A couple of years ago, one of my friends entered "Gong Show" night at the 9:30 club with a group of his friends - they did a PERFECT recreation of the later day Misfits & performed a medley of tunes as "The Fiend Club". And the crowd LOVED them - they ended up getting 2nd place behind a band that did their own originals (and were quite good). So honestly, if someone were to do a Misfits-type band. I think the trick is not to "recreate" the Misfits as they were, but rather to tailor it to the image that their present day fans have in their minds - a concept of "The Misfits" that probably never quite existed 11 years ago. I say go ALL the way with the shock horror look, the idea of bursting forth from coffins on stage etc. (But then I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the theatrics of Alice Cooper & Kiss that I grew up on as an impressionable young brat...) But I still don't think it would be the "Misfits". I really think a name change would be in order. (I've never thought much of bands that replaced a crucial member & kept going. To me "Van Halen" still means "with David Lee Roth" (and I'm not even a fan of theirs) as much as "Back Sabbath" implies Ozzy Osbourne to me. Better change the name since a new singer would be a major change) And of course Jerry & Doyle might be going in a completely different musical direction now anyway - I thought Kryst the Conquerer was VERY different in sound to the Misfits - I thought it sounded a lot more like Iron Maiden or something (real not to my taste. If so, I think they definitely should have another name (maybe just remain as "Kryst"?) Anyway, those are my feelings. Believe me, I'd love to see the Misfits as bad as any of you (probably worse than most) but I think the only way to really do that would be to travel back in time...... Ciao, Elizabeth PS - Saw a sneak preview of ED WOOD over the weekend and it is FANTASTIC!! Highly recommend it! I will say, however, that I think you'll appreciate everything that went into the making of this film better if you first check out Ed Wood's own "Plan Nine from Outer Space", "Bride of the Monster" and "Glen Or Glenda" to realize how letter perfect their recreations of scenes from these were! ------------------------------ From: Neil McAllister Subject: Danzig Bootleg for Sale Date: Mon, 3 Oct 1994 14:57:05 -0700 (PDT) I have one (1) copy of a Danzig bootleg disc. This is an older bootleg, from the first album tour. It says it was recorded at The Palace in Hollywood, July 7 1989. The track listing is as follows: 1. Intro/Am I Demon (on the intro John plays licks from Her Black Wings) 2. Twist of Cain 3. Mother 4. Soul on Fire 5. She Rides (Glenn bitches how they won't play the video on MTV) 6. All Hell/London Dungeon (Misfits - sleeve doesn't list "All Hell") 7. End of Time (with guitar intro from John) 8. 777 (apparently they already had a couple songs for Danzig II) 9. Mother of Mercy (Samhain - sleeve lists it as "Time in Hell") 10. To Walk the Night (Samhain) 11. Horror Biz (Misfits - sleeve says "Last Caress" but not so!) 12. The Hunter 13. Evil Thing 14. Not of this World 15. When Death Had No Name (sleeve says "When Death Has No End") 16. Trouble (sleeve says "I'm Evil") 17. Mother of Mercy (from a different show -- why??) On the whole, I'd characterize this as a good-quality audience bootleg, except for the last track which sounds like shit... I'm not even sure why it was put in with the rest of it. One problem with the disc is that the person who made the bootleg felt it was necessary to break up the tracks for some reason, so that each song fades in at the beginning and out at the end -- even when there's an obvious transition to the next song. Generally it works okay, but sometimes it fades out in the intro to the next song -- and then fades back into the intro of the next song. Kinda stupid. Anyway I bought this for a friend who now has decided he doesn't want it after all, so I'm out some cash. I paid $30 + 8.25% sales tax when I bought it, but I will ship it anywhere in the US for $30 even. I just question the value of MTV in general. I mean, when Danzig's original "Mother" video came out, of course MTV chopped out the sacrificial chicken and blood. And Glenn complained. So WHY DID HE KEEP UP WITH EM? Because it's MTV, I guess. And now he's burned again with "Mother '93" because MTV didn't use the actual concert track in the video; they just put applause over the "Mother" track from the album and spliced Glenn hooting "Thank you" at the end. Talk about cheeseball!! I have heard my generation is the MTV generation and what not (I am 20), and I consider myself fortunate to have grown up in a household that did not have cable (and therefore MTV) until I moved out to go to college. As far as I'm concerned, MTV is an eyesore. I currently have an MTV baby for a roommate. He ejaculates a triumphant "Yes!" when the Real World comes on. He thinks "I'll Make Love to You" is great music (such innovative lyrics, no less). I don't know how hep most of the readers to this list are, but there are performers such as Ian Mackaye and Jello Biafra who have been able to receive national--hell, international recognition without ever having appeared on MTV. I can't say I like every Fugazi song (although I dig Minor Threat) or don't find Jello a bit paranoid every once in a while (though, give him credit, the guy has been a direct victim of vicious censorship, even so far as cops breaking into his house). Still, I enjoy the fact that there are people who can be big in the music industry and can honestly say they never did anything for MTV. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if there were more that one "cool" locale for popular music videos and interviews. But MTV has pretty much cornered the market with "MTV Raps" and "120 Minutes" and "Headbanger's Ball." COME ON! They've spread themselves quite thinly, don't you think? I mean especially when you think about the crap they carried in the 80's. For crying out loud, the only black artist they had for the longest time was Michael Jackson. And now they're pumping all these PC "Free Your Mind" blurbs. When did they get religion?? (so to speak) So I guess my point is, on all this "selling out" business... for one thing, obviously Glenn wants to be on MTV. The lineup of DANZIG is essentially the final lineup of SAMHAIN, but they gave it a nice "BONHAM"- or "VAN HALEN"- sounding name to make it commercial and cut down the curses to simple epithets like "bitch" and "whore" instead of good old cussing like "f*ck" and "sh*t". And there's nothing wrong with wanting to be on MTV and get lots of exposure-- if you are willing to accept the consequences of becoming a mindless "buzz clip." I have to wonder about people like Metallica, though.. any Metallikats on this list? Just as a parting thought.. what the HELL was up with them, anyway? They were already rich and famous. Why the last, horrible album? A friend of mine came up with what seems to me the only possible solution... apparently James and his ilk, for all their hair length, are going quite bald-- they must have wanted the notoriety of MTV in order to keep up their stock of screaming teen concubines as their archaic bodies wither. Whattaya think, folx? Just my two cents' worth. Picked up two yesterday (one for home, one for car) & have been playing it nonstop since and I absolutely love it - its exactly the direction I'd hoped the band would follow, namely songs that best set off what IMHO is Danzig's best asset - Glenn's voice. (Most of my favs to date have been the slower numbers). I think my favorites so far are "Going Down To Die" & "Dominion", but I don't think there's a loser in the bunch (though "Sadisikal" is odd... more a performance piece than a song exactly...but kool.). I think mystery track #66 is called "Invocation" - I remember Glenn mentioned it in a recent interview (I think it was in METAL HAMMER but I'll have to double check and my mags are at home) Wish I could figure out all the lyrics to it - wrote down about 90% of it but can't get a few lines. I'm sure this album will irritate the hell out of all the little metalheads who latched on with "Mother" and are expecting more like that & "Twist of Cain". Frankly I think that is probably one of their intentions! Meanwhile I'm going crazy trying to figure out what the little symbols on the front are - started pouring through my bookshelf of esoterica last night but no luck so far. If anybody else has a clue please let me know! They remind me of planetary symbols but aren't.... I absolutely ADORE the Kaluta piece on the inside and am seriously thinking it would make an incredible tattoo - for years I wanted to do something to "commemorate" this band but up until now I couldn't figure out what to use (the plain old skull seemed too commonplace to moi). Think this would be perfect - works in the yin/yang, balance of light versus dark etc plus is beautifully drawn by one of my all time favorite artists. (The angel/white demoness looks suspiciously like Silene/Shiren from Go Nagai's Devilman....) I'll ask Mike about doing it when I drive down to Charlotte, NC this weekend for him to start my backpiece (beautiful demon from a Japanese comic). Anybody out there have any Misfits/Danzig etc tats? Would love to hear about 'em - I've seen some really great ones (and some really bad ones out there - like the backpiece of thick wiggly lines that took my five minutes of staring to realize it MEANT to be the Black Aria cover!) Comments to Bible #19 - Crimson Ghost - hey, sorry I forget ya!! (On my list of movies for an all night & then some fest!) Thanks for my obvious oversight (I've got all the Crimson Ghost serials on video tape too!) I know I'd written down "Where Eagles Dare" & "Brain Eaters" on my notes but somehow missed them when I typed it up. Whoops - thanks for the additions!! Also, sorry if I understood what you meant, think I do now - well, if you prefer the bluesy stuff I'm sure you'll enjoy D4! RE: blasphemy - I'm under the impression that Glenn thinks of Lucifer/Satan (which means "the adversary") as fallen angel that rebelled against a tyrranical deity and that what he's really saying more or less is "question authority" more than anything else. (I'm also an atheist though I find religion to be an incredibly fascinating topic & read quite a lot on it!! To me it's all a form of mythology....) "The Misfit" - offhand I don't recall any altercations between Mr. D & Jello Biafra. And honestly, if Mr. D. wanted to kill somebody I'm sure he'd rather take the personal satisfaction in dispatching them himself rather than hiring some "big ol' baddass bounty hunter". (What is this supposed to be anyway, Lobo? Actually, I can imagine that - Lobo gets hired to kill rock star, only to realize they wrote his fav tune & he starts jammin' with them instead & they all go out for a few Brewskis & he gets drunk & kills everybody in the bar & annihilates half the planet. Gotta get Bisley to draw it though - his imitators are pathetic.... ) Mark Kennedy - As for more sound a like songs, how about "Left Hand Black" and "The Howl"? Always thought they were pretty similar.... Haven't seen too much in the way of graffitti aside from "Misfits" and "Danzig" spray painted on a few walls here & there - nothing real exciting. Thanx for letting me know what CD single the Lemonhead's "Skulls" cover is on so I can track it down for "the collection"! Thank you, Elizabeth, for the lyrics. I got them in the mail the day Danzig had their in-store in LA. (Yes, I did go.) They were autographing pretty much anything you brought in, but the American PRs were trying to keep it down to one per person. One guy had the entire Danzig discography. Some people had Misfits/Samhain stuff, but I don't know if Glenn signed it or not. Anyway, John (he was the closest) was cool when I asked him to sign my copy and a copy for my friend in Berkeley. Joey (drums, ex-Sugartooth) was signing across Chuck's head. Then there was Glenn! ( - insert spooky music here) I asked Joey where he was from, and Glenn cracked some joke about how Joey's getting all the shit, being the new guy and all. BTW, I knew Glenn was, um, vertically challenged :), but he has tiny hands! He also has those long, pointed nails, although they weren't all the same length. "Damn, I broke a nail!" Yeah, like Arnold complaining about a papercut (it's a Letterman joke). And Eerie was on the end, stylin' in what looked like Chuck's hat. They were smiling and joking with the fans. Maybe they were laughing at us because we stood in the rain for a coupla hours. Glenn got to hug all the girls. Lucky bastard. Maybe he was in a good mood. This crap about Glenn being an asshole is irrelevant. He's been in the music business (and the public eye) for over fifteen years now, and he has put up with a lot of crap in that time. Maybe he's only an asshole when kids approach him at the mall :) and ask him to sign the new record, and a Samhain tape, and oh, wait, my friend wants to say "Hi"... I could understand if he wanted to dis someone off. BTW, personally, Danzig IV: P kinda makes me want to murder the little KROQ/"Alternative" kids who live here in LA. With a big knife. Like my hero, OJ. :) Later... The Rickmeister ricky_hinojos@qmail2.aero.org ------------------------------ From: CrmsnGhost@aol.com Date: Thu, 06 Oct 94 21:47:36 EDT Subject: misfits reunion In Misfits Bible #19 Liz Bouras Writes: To paraphrase Liz I'll just say she has some pretty strong opinions about the possibility of the Misfits getting back together..(Read #19).Liz seems to think that Glenn is God and the other band members are no count dope junkies, and if the misfits did get back together (without G.D. of course) that it wouldn't be a *true* reunion. Kinda like Van Halen without David Lee Roth. Liz goes on to say that maybe a name change should be in order such as remaining Kryst the Conquerer. I'll address each of her points with counterpoints. Number one Jerry & Doyle have every right to use that name. The fact everyone seems to forget about is that glenn never did anything for the band Jerry, and Doyle later on, worked their collective asses off to support that band. I'm talking about hard dirty labor at their father's company. I know, I'm the office manager for that company. According to Jerry's mom, Glenn never did a day's work in his life. When it was time for the band to tour Europe guess who paid for it, it certainly wasn't Glenn Danzig, it was my boss's VISA card, which Jerry had to work off. Anybody who reads this list knows that I don't like Danzig, I like his voice, but him personally forget it. I know too much about when they were kids. If Glenn has Moved on like so many of you stupid fans believe then why are there so many misfits cd's, bootlegs, Tee-shirts, etc.. on the market?? I'll tell you one thing Jerry, Doyle, Robo, Franche & Googy never saw any cash for it.. Hmmmmmm I wonder who did??? Glenn used that band as a stepping stone and wouldn't be anywhere today if not for it. Let's face it, Samhain really sucked and Danzig is mediocre at best He doesn't come close to being as good as he was in the misfits. As far as not being a true reunion. Who gives a good shit they have a right to go out and make a buck. I've heard these guys practice every day for the last year and a half and they're great. They sound better than ever. As far as the rumors about Jerry not being able to play bass too good, that's bullshit he's fuckin' great. I'm a bass player I know how difficult it is to do what he's doing these days. Hey Danzig *was* a great singer. But even great vocalists can be replaced. Look at Iron Maiden after Paul D'anno left, along came bruce. I just think they would be able to find a Jim Morrison immitator easily. When you get down to it that's all G.D. is anyway a fuckin' modern day Jim Morrison, he writes like him sings like him, (He's already writing songs about his mother) who knows maybe he'll even die a death from wretched excess too. That would really complete the whole equation. The Crimson Ghost ------------------------------ From: rduran@cs.utep.edu Subject: 4P/Lyrics Date: Fri, 7 Oct 1994 11:17:19 -0600 (MDT) Hey all! Haven't written to this list in some time (early Summer), but have enjoyed the ramblings of the various entities on here. So, the new 'Zig is out, and I haven't seen it in this HellHole of a city. Tell me, what do y'all think of it? I've read mixed reviews in usenet's alt.rock-n-roll.metal.* groups, but I think I value the opinions on this list considerably more (when it comes to 'Zig or the 'sFits). Some of y'all have mentioned trying to find a definitive collection of 'sFits lyrix. Some time ago, I downloaded a file that had most of their lyrix, as well as Samhain's. The thing with this file is that, for some of the songs, a number of variants are given. Would anyone be interested in helping me come up with as close to a definitive lyrix sheet as possible? Anyone for a MisFits WWW page? That would be _too_ cool. Coupl'a Q's: What movie was the background of the WAU cover taken from? In Iron Maiden's 'Number of the Beast' video (the _good_ one which includes much footage from old horror movies), a person w/ a skull mask and hood-cape combo is shown. Is that the Crimson Ghost?) On which legitimate vinyl(s) are "Return of the Fly" and "Horror Hotel" found? Hmm, the ultimate MisFiTs concert?
