Talk about cheeseball!! Basically Glenn feels that if MTV will take his stuff, great, he can get his music across to that many more fans. If not, well, he can do it without them. He basically says that in about every article nowadays after the MTV thing. About "Mother" though. Unfortunately that wasn't MTV's doing. That was American Recording's doing. They're the ones who created that bullshi t live performance song and then put "taken from the album Thrall-Demonsweatlive" on every version of the single. That's the biggest lie in the world. Sure, the live crowd noise is on Thrall and so is the shitty live version, but only the reissue has the remix. Unfortunately, that remix isn't even live.... > So I guess my point is, on all this "selling out" business... for one > thing, obviously Glenn wants to be on MTV. Personally, I think Glenn figured that since the music was all his, the name might as well be all his. I can understand it. The man wrote music for years and it wasn't getting him anywhere. Look what happened when they got signed and changed the band name. His music style is changing. You can follow the progression from the first Misfits 7" all the way to 4p. I think it's amazing. The early Samhain sounds sort of like late Misfits, the late Samhain sounds just like Danzig, and now where is he going? Every Danzig album has gotten more diverse and interesting. He's a talented guy there is no doubt. And as far as the name goes, The Misfits was more of a band name. It makes you think of this group of crazy guys - misfits. Samhain seemed more like this evil mysterious character. And now Danzig. Personally, I think the name Danzig is as foreboding in some ways as Samhain is. Then I can look at it as just Glenn's last name. It's his band, his music, his artwork, his way of expressing himself and so the band is his name. (Well close, the band is his fake last name). I don't know, I have no problem with what old Glenn is doing. I have to agree with you about G.D. on MTV - but I must disagree with your opinion of MTV in general. MTV is without a doubt a viable genre it's the musical artform of the day. Kinda like the light and laser shows of the sixties and seventies. Danzig's vid for mother had nothing to do with MTV dubbing applause over the studio track that was danzig's doing MTV DOESN'T MAKE THE VIDEOS. The original sacrificial video was a well done video, I don't agree with the subject matter, but it was a well filmed clip. I think it was just tooo much for mainstream TV. As far as MTV suddenly getting and playing alot of black artists and promoting racial relations, your way off track. Only someone who never had MTV until recently would say something like that. The first video I ever remember seeing on MTV was "Electric Avenue" by Eddie Grant, I do believe he is Blacker than Michael Jackson. back in the eighties you must remember that MTV was still young and cable TV was really only seem by white middle class america, so that's what the music was aimed at. They played plenty of black artists, you don't fail to remember that, you can't remember that you said it yourself you didn't get MTV. So please let us know how you can make such a broad statement when you have nothing to base it on? The fact is that MTV has a much broader viewing base today, and they've adjusted their format to match it. As far as Metallica goes, The black album is by far their best effort to date. Their earlier albums were good, but, the last album even though it was over produced, was by far a great leap for them both musically and lyrically. "sad but true" sounds like a metallica song done by people who actually know how to play instruments. I realize that most metallica heads will disagree with me, but hey that's what free speech is all about. The Led Zeppelin song you are thinking of is "How Many More Times". It's on the first LZ record. One thing Danzig fans have to understand is that he rips off a lot of blues stuff. Killer Wolf is a good example. Just change the words a little and you have a much older blues tune. Same story with "The Hunter". Originally it was by a man named Albert Hall. Glenn just changed the words for his version. Led Zeppelin used to do the same thing. So, while it looks like Glenn stole from LZ, the truth is that they both stole from the guy. Glenn freely admits this. In several articles from a few years ago he spoke of how he does this. MISFITS BIBLE FAQ'S ages ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 11 Oct 1994 00:36:50 -0600 (MDT) From: Jason D Vaupel I recently joined this little shindig, and I must say that I have a few things on my mind. They will be tumbling out soon, in a bit of a muddle, but I'll let ol' "misfits@virginia.edu" do with them what he/she will. First, I must I must give a simple, yet emphatic, thumbs up to the latest Danzig record. "4p" is a wonder and definately something to behold. I just can't get enough of it, much the same way I can't ever seem to put away "Legacy of Brutality." I have to say that "4p" is a work of musical and lyrical magic not seen since the first four songs off "How the Gods Kill." Bravo, boys! Secondly, and using the HTGK reference above as a segue, I have to say that who ever mentioned that "The Hunter" derives a portion of its lyrics from "How Many More Times," is right on the ball. But, good listeners, did you also notice that the music for "Bodies" on HTGK is actaully a stylized version of "How Many More Times"? Now, I am no musical wizard, but I suspect that Glenn and the boys decided that just horquing the words from this fine oldie wasn't enough: they needed to copy the bassline, drums, and guitar bits down to what sounds like the last note. In short, they have made themselves the first band to ripoff one song to make two "new" ones since ZZTop started making records. (No flames please for the "comparison" between two grossly dissimilar, and unequally talented bands. All in jest, friends, all in jest.) Third, I am 21, for the fellow who asked our ages. Fourth, was anybody at the Davenport, IA Danzig show on 8/6/93 when Glenn grabbed some clown out of the front row and popped him three times in the face, and then continued singing? It was a bit distrubing, to say the least. Fifth, and finally, for the "all time" Misfits set, I am going to have to go with: pretty much everything from "Legacy of Brutality" (maybe "American Nightmare" twice, or something)/Hatebreeders/Skulls/Mommy.../ Last Caress/20 Eyes/Death Comes Ripping/Bullett/Teenagers from Mars/Green Hell/Attitude. Yeah, that would do it pretty much, I'd say...of course, the encore would have to have everything else, but hey, let's not get carried away... In thickness, Your Mama's Favorite ------------------------------ From: Neil McAllister Subject: Re: "Walk Among Us" quality Date: Tue, 11 Oct 1994 03:04:51 -0700 (PDT) Actually, I think "Walk Among Us" is the only Misfits album NOT distributed by Caroline (these days at least). Plan 9 put out the rest of them, but at least the current issues of the Misfits and Samhain albums still in print are distributed by Caroline. Caroline is not the sole label for any Misfits releases, only in conjunction with Plan 9. "Walk Among Us" was on Ruby Records, which I believe is owned by Warner Bros. Anyway, I guess for a while there it looked like the Misfits were going to get themselves onto a label with some actual distribution clout, and so the "Walk Among Us" record was cut with Ruby. Ruby subsequently fucked up the production of the record royally, giving rise to three different printings of the cover (the red, green, and purple printings). And what is more, for at least a very long time the band hardly saw a nickel from the record, as I understand it -- Ruby dicked them over. I'm not sure what the situation surrounding that is now, I think there was a lawsuit underway at some point. Oh, and as far as ages go, I'm 21. -- +--------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Neil McAllister |"...the picture-story, which critics disregard | | |and scholars scarcely notice, has had great in-| | |fluence at all times, perhaps even more than | | Santa Cruz, CA USA |written literature." -- Rudolphe Topffer, 1845 | +--------------------------------------------------------------------+ ------------------------------ From: Daryoush Mansouri Subject: Age and other stuff Date: Tue, 11 Oct 94 9:43:25 EDT > >I have to wonder about people like Metallica > >Why the last, horrible album? Sorry CG, but I'll have to agree with the original poster on this one... I was always a big Metallica fan, until their last album. I always thought there was so much raw energy in their previous albums, and that they were just being themselves, playing the music they loved. This last album just didn't do anything for me. Like you said, I found it way too overproduced. Also, there was always some magic about how they were such a huge band without making any MTV appearances or the like, but I lost count of how many videos alone they had off the black album, not to mention all the appearances at the music video awards and promotions and stuff. Hell, previously, there was only the "One" video, and they were doing quite fine. I don't know what their deal was... I suppose it was just the changing times, and their changing desires. They obviously thought it was time to go "mainstream", and if you ask me, it wasn't the best decision. But hey... they're set for life now. But anyway... As I am now 26 going on 27 (this answers the question about ages of people on this mailing list) this must have been about 14 years ago. I've never heard anything by the Misfits played on the radio since. I remember it after all this time as I really liked the song but as I had no money I never bought any Misfits records at the time. C'mon, you "silent majority"!! In regard to songs sounding alike-- howzabout "Twist of Cain," "Snakes of Christ," and Led Zeppelin's "In My Time of Dying"? or how about the intro bass lines to "Bodies," LZ's "How Many More Times," and Pink Floyd's "Money"? Could it just be my imagination? And of course there's the 3-chord progression which is predominant in both "Not of This World" and "I Turned into a Martian".. and how about "Mother" and "Horror Hotel"... can I have an "amen" here, folks? OK maybe I think too much. And whatever happened to the idea for a Samhain boxed set? Didn't Glenn mention that in some interview with Ricki Rachtman (or whatever)? If there'd been some demos thrown in, or just some really nice booklet with tons of photos or informative "articles" I would'a shelled out the big bucks. Damn everyone else- I like Samhain! First of all for a guy who was in one of the best bands-the Misfits- and who is only now getting credit for his work I think Danzig has done what everyone in his situation would do. If someone is going to pay money to listen to your music either videos or records then who is going to turn down that money. For principles? Give me a fucking break! First of all i never got the opinion Danzing and his previous bands were on a morale crusade to reform the industry or anything like that. Not to say that Danzig doesn't have his faults, but if he is or has to get a fan base from MTV. Thats what the hell everyone watches. Who is going to deny themselves respect and appreciation for the sake of some chicken blood or some naked angels breasts. For instance take the song Last Caress: The actual images are actually repulsive if I take them seriously. But the song is almost poppy in my opinion wit teh light guitar and Glenn's voice is not of some murder who just raped my mother. But these things have happened before. It is as if the band was always expressing its interest in horror and death not glorifying it and ethically sanctioning it. they represent a mysterious sadistic side to society that i don't think many people are able to face. paul. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Oct 1994 22:32:51 -0400 (EDT) From: RYAN_JAS@bentley.edu Subject: Alien Bosoms Hey all, I just read my first issue of the bible and figured id post. First of all, dont bother reading posts from fucking idiots on usenet. Danzig4 fucking rips. Hell it got all the intensity that the band has built up over the years and Eerie and John do come alive.. Glenns voice is 'not of this world' in his latest effort and the songwriting(lyrics) are heavy, even for Danzigs standards, though some may not understand them, but we wont have to worry about that here. Mark had sent a copy of this list up to Jerry. Jerry & I found the book very well researched and the most complete listing of bootlegs available. So I wanted to get Mark's permission to use his work in future Doyle fan club releases. To make a long story short, I emailed mark and got along quite well with him, I suggested that maybe we should get an email list going, and you know Mark, one week later issue #1 came out. That's the story behind this list. Since fiends really don't ask alot of questions we have a list of unenforced rules & requests: 1) Please do not post your entire life's collection of Bootlegs, it just takes up too much space. If you'd like to trade with people, say you have a good collection and that people should email you for the list. Mark is working on a World Wide Web Misfits Home Page, we can all probably post our lists there. 2) Please keep all dialog limited to the Misfits and related bands 3) There's a whole shitload of people on here and nobody talks why is that?? This list is much better than the DANZIG USENET NEWSGROUP!! 4) Mark has created a World Wide Web Misfits Home Page, It contains part of Mark's Book and all the back issues of this list, plus some lyrics. The URL IS: http://watt.seas.virginia.edu/~msk4m/ 5) I (Crimson Ghost) run the Doyle Fan Club, so if you'd like your name added to the mailing list, send email to my address, but please don't send personal questions about Jerry and Doyle. That's basically it. Tell all the fiends you know about this list and talk whenever you feel like it. The spreading of Accurate information is what's important here, and we don't get anywhere by not talking. All the info I've learned has been really enlightening, and I've met some really cool people (Hi, Liz!!!!). I would like to give a sort of round-about answer to the question of songs for a Misfits concert: Since I was too young when they were around (as I'm sure many of us were), I'd just like to see them; it really wouldn't matter what they played. They could come out and play old Nancy Sinatra tunes for all I cared...Ok, that's going overboard a bit, but I'm sure the point is taken. Keyboard, incidentally, was the first instrument I learned, and I always delighted in the fact that the Misfits started out with keyboards and that Glenn's music has occasionally featured piano. But I play crazy-ass punk keyboard music, and, to be honest, Glenn's playing sounds just about the caliber I'd come up with if I could afford a $10000 keyboard. John and I worked for 10 days straight with our new drummer Joey C. (he used to be in Sugertooth). We did an instore at Tower on Sunset last Tuesday, then did a free show at the Whiskey later that night. So now it's Monday and we start teaching him 20 or so more songs. He already knows 10 or so... This should make John and I and Joey very tight musically, by the time we get on tour we'll be such a good band it will be ridiculous." Since I missed out on contributing to the last few Bibles I wanted to make a few comments on the last ones: Bible #22 - Christina Isaacs - I've got the Sheffield video from October 1988 (when they were supporting Metallica) - I could copy it for ya but I can only make NTSC tapes & if you are in the UK you'd need them on the PAL system. Barring that I could make an audio copy for you. In response to Stephen Michael Bent's questions: As for location - I currently reside in the Maryland 'burbs outside of Washington DC. I'm originally from Philadelphia & also have lived in NYC. Other fav bands besides Danzig/Samhain/Misfits/Undead would include NIN, The Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilim, White Zombie, Type O Negative, Bauhaus, The Cramps, The Damned, Ministry & tons of goth/punk/industrial stuff. And to answer the earlier question about age - I'm probably the oldest on this list at 33. Yeah, was 16 back in 1977 & bought most of the orig. punk releases when they first came out (except the misfits who I didn't know about at the time - cry!) To Richard Duran - WHOOPS! When I said my friend Mike, I didn't mean Michael Kaluta - I've met him a few times at conventions but only spoke to him briefly and he probably wouldn't remember me. I stand in absolute AWE of the man's work & collect his comics, portfolios, prints etc (and hope someday for originals!). Nono, my friend Mike is Mike Tisdale, the tattooist in Charlotte NC. And when I went down Columbus Day weekend I wasn't entirely set on the design we'd be working on for my backpiece, so since I had the time, the $ & he was free, I got him to tattoo the Kaluta drawing from "4p" on my upper chest over my left breast! It's healing well now and looks amazing - I can't believe the amount of detail he got in that!! (Should be all healed in time for the Danzig tour!!) (I do know a lot of other comic artists though, mainly as I collect a lot of art - know Joseph Linsner, Tim Vigil, Tony Harris, Craig Hamilton, & James O'Barr pretty well plus some others.... but not Sienkeiwicz or Kyle Baker though although I very much admire their work!!!) RE: Horror Hotel - it's a British horror movie from the early 60's starring Christopher Lee (not a Hammer film although I keep thinking it is) Am pretty sure it's from there. Psycho clearly inspired "Horror Business" though. Stephen Sisson - the Samhain boxed set is still on the back burner, Glenn hasn't had the $ to put it out. He told me that he wants to get Tim Vigil to do the artwork for it though (and a friend of mine who works for Vigil is buggin' Tim to remind Glenn since she wants to see it as bad as I do!) As for mispronouncing Celtic works, I've got an audio tape of an early Samhain i/v from WNEW in NYC where the band kept trying to correct the pronounciation of the DJ. I guess they eventually gave up trying! Personally I always say "sow-en" and so do my friends.... (Of course most of them are pagan anyway) Ricky Hinojos - I've never personally met anybody on this list, but since I started contributing I've been getting a lot of great e- mail!! Bible #21 - Mark Kennedy - yup, The Fiend club included Johnny Favorite & co. And it was a GREAT show! (Got some good pix & an audio tape - I document everything....) Geoff We@sel - so how can I get a copy of "A Wolf Called Danzig"? Crimson Ghost - Whoops. I think you might not have completely understood what I was trying to say. To make it clearer, I would think it would be equally crazy if Glenn Danzig tried to get a band together WITHOUT Jerry Only and call that the Misfits. I think both are equally integral to the whole thang. I really think any band called "The Misfits" would need BOTH people. And I'm speaking from purely aesthetic/artists grounds, nothing to do with who paid for what, owns what legally etc etc. Anyway, no offense taken (I feel like those guys on 20/20 that do Point/Counterpoint!) & apology certainly accepted! : ) Understand your position as an "insider" I might not be an insider but I'm standing in a doorway, albeit a different one! ------------------------------ From: CrmsnGhost@aol.com Date: Mon, 17 Oct 1994 22:46:54 -0400 Subject: Metallica, etc.... in 'fits #22 Daryoush Mansouri writes: >I was always a big Metallica fan, until their last >album. I know this is off the subject matter, but it needs to be addressed. In this case history speaks. In 1968 a little group from England put out an album that defined what rock was to become. In 1969 they followed it up with yet another definitive album. These albums were raw intensified energy, and became the standard by which all others were judged. In 1970 this same band put out an entirerly different sort of album. This album was almost all acoustic music, critically praised, but the fans didn't like the change. They followed that album up with a forth which was a combination of the first two and the third. That forth album has without a doubt the most definitive rock album of all time and has influenced many of the bands that we listen to today. On Saturday we met Franche Coma behind the Sheraton Hotel just outside of Lodi and got into his car. (He's got 4 kids so his car was a gray mini-van) He was great - he gave us flyers from a show in June of '78 and signed all kinds of stuff. We spent about 20-30 minutes driving around Lodi talking about the Misfits. he showed us his old house, Mr. Jim's old house, Lodi high school, and Jerry's old house (where they used to practice and stuff). Then he took us by the place where Mr. Jim works and we hung out with him for about a half hour. At this point we took some pictures. Before I forget - Franche's birthday is 8/17/57. He was in the class before Jerry at Lodi High School. Mr. Jim graduated in '71 with Manny and Glenn graduated in '73, which means his birthday is 6/23/55. He's 39 even though he says otherwise in interviews. Mr. Jim was kind of quiet and didn't really have much to say, but we got a lot of info out of him. He looked pretty much the same as he used to in the Misfits days, as opposed to Franche' who was wearing sweatpants and a bugs bunny shirts, sunglasses, and converse all star high tops. One of the cool things Mr. Jim told us was that in the fall of '78 right after Franche left, a guy named Rich Riley played 4 shows with the Misfits. This guy was in the Victims (who are the only non- Glenn band released on Plan 9). He was just playing wiht them to fill in for Franche who had departed because he was paranoid about touring. Too bad... After leaving Mr. Jim, we went to several record stores. Music Man in Paromus NJ was full of lots of stuff but unfortunately it was infinitely overpriced and the guy who runs the place was an asshole. He did show us Glenn's high school yearbook picture though. Glenn had long long hair and wanted to go to trade school. Weird. Lodi's the Music Connection was pretty standard except for the Misfits section. There were tons of records autographed gby Bobby STeele, so i grabbed ac couple. Then we went and took pitcures of Glenn's house and Jerry's houes and drove by Mr. Jim's house again and Lodi High and this place called Felician College where Danzig had a photo shoot back in '89 or something. I recognized it from one of my pictures. This is also the place where Doyle graduated from 8th grade. He didn't go there, they just had a celebration of some sort there. The town was pretty nice, I suppose. There were graveyards everywhere. And this was the perfect season because Halloween decorations were all over. Also there was a black cat sitting next to Jerry's old house, which was kind of fitting. The next day was more monumental though. We drove out to Proedge where we met Jerry and Doyle. They signed a lot of stuff and handed me Jerry's old bass which I have a picture of now, with me holding it in front of the old skull amps). Also on the wall we saw Jerry's football team from '76. He had long hair at the time, like on the cover of cough cool. AFter they signed a ton of stuff, we went into the practice room. This place was covered with pictures of girls with the occastional Kryst the Conqueror and Misfits item thrown up as well as a few set lists. We sat down and they (with new drummer CHUD) jumped into Queen Wasp. When that was done, Jerry yelled "what do you want to hear" and I cleverly chose Return Of The Fly. AFter hearing Teenagers From Mars and Children In Heat, I requested She and Will called for I Turned Into A Martian. After doing this song, Doyle had to go to watch the Giants. These guys are hugely strong and obvious football fans. In the practice room were a set of weights, which we later saw Jerry and Chud lifting. After getting a picture of us with Chud and the twins of evil, Jerry gave us a tour of Proedge and we met his dad. He called us his "friends from virginia". After this we kind of just talked for awhile and he showed us their new guitars which haven't been patented yet and couldn't be included in pictures. They were great guys. The music was loud and sounded really good. They are in the best of health and have improved their playing. Jerry gave us lots of Proedge tools and other thigns, like guitar picks and posters. He's got big plans for the future and they sounded cool. There are loads of other things that could be said, but 'i'll save them for later, i guess... mark. ------------------------------------- To contribute to the next issue, please send email to: misfits@virginia.edu For more information, or for back issues, contact Mark Kennedy at: msk4m@watt.seas.virginia.edu The Misfits World Wide Web page is available at: http://watt.seas.virginia.edu/~msk4m/ The views expressed here are those of the individual authors only. Colin MacLeod macleoda@sfu.ca ------------------------------ From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" Subject: New "Ugly Things" is out! Date: Thu, 20 Oct 94 14:34:00 edt Just got the latest issue of Mike Stax's great UGLY THINGS magazine #13 which has an interview with ex 'fits drummer JOEY IMAGE plus an update on the huge Misfits article they did in #12. IMHO both are a must for the serious Misfits fanatic as they have a lot of rare pix & band info. (Glad to see that Mike was able to use a lot of the pix I'd sent him in #13!) Both can be ordered from: Ugly Things, 405 W. Washington Street #237, San Diego, CA 92103. Issues are $6 each ppd (add $2 for overseas) - kinda steep but its a pretty large mag (#13 is 82 pp, #12 was 64) fully offset with tons of pix which costs a bundle to put out. Tell Mike I sent ya... Also just picked up the latest Henry Rollins spoken word double CD "Get On the Van" which is Henry reading from his Black Flag tour diaries. It's a stitch and the 'Fits come up several times - he describes how he first met them, and going to the 12/25/81 gig in Passiac NJ (the one immortalized on the "If you don't know..." bootleg LP) Highly recommended! Comments on #23- RYAN_JAS - Well, sorry if the Initium lyrics are wrong - or at least differ from how they were recorded - believe it or not I typed 'em exactly from the "official" lyrics that came with the first few pressings of the LP (hand written out in Glenn's own handwriting). I'll dig up the "November Coming Fire" ones & post them here tho since ya asked! Afraid there are no officially released ones to "Final descent" tho so keep guessing! I also have the lyrics "It's Coming Down", "Violet Fire" and "Trouble" from Thrall if anybody wants 'em - they never came with the CD but they were in the press kit!! CG - Good point taken RE:Led Zepplin. Mark Kennedy - personally I like the digest format.... reminds me very much of the APA's (Amatuer Press Associations) that I used to belong to for comics/anime groups except that was done thru the mail (each person would put together a zine, photocopy enuff copies for everybody on the list & send them to a central point to be collated & mailed out). Except of course this is *MUCH* faster & cheaper!! Anyway, keep the digest format please! Really enjoyed your write up of your trip to Jersey to visit all the historic shrines!! And lucky you getting to meet so many of the 'fits! Is the dead hearse with weeds growing all around it still in Glenn's parents' driveway??? Isn't the HUGE cematary across the street from the Lodi school cool - reminds me of "Midian" in "Nightbreed". Must have been pretty influencial on all those kids across the street.... I suspect this may have something do with the fact that the CD is hard to find. According to American Recordings, the CD is being held behind the counter so that fans have to come up and ask for it . In a while it will be issued without the cool packaging and will be placed on the shelf with all the other stuff. So.... Check out the Misfits page. Why is it that issue after issue someone usually opens up some sort of interesting dialog, most of the time either myself, Mark or Elizabeth (and a few others). This dialog is usually talked about (though postings) by the same group. Why is it no one else gets involved in these discussions? Most of you on this list are college students, you're supposed to be educated. Let's get something going. Punk music isn't about being brain dead, murderers or minions of death. *GET REAL* Yes, this music we love is a snubbing of authority, that's what makes it great, it's rawness is in part due to the snubbing of the record companies (Another authority figure). But really, it's *not* supposed to be a snubbing of your mind. This list should be great, sometimes it is, but most of the time it is the most boring thing in my mailbox! Personally I don't care about what's going on in the life of danzig. What I would like to hear about is how his twisted life has affected his music. That would be an intelligent discussion. I have tried to get something going on this list and nothing happens week after week. I know the majority of you enjoy reading what I say, so why dosn't anyone respond in kind? I try to put some thought into what I write can't you do the same? That's about all I have to say on the matter. In closing I won't be posting to this list until I feel that it's worth the effort. by the way misfit20, would you please *stop* posting in all caps, it's a well known internet no no, very annoying and difficult to read. Me again, back from Seacaucus NJ & the Chiller Theater con! Well, even though the Misfits didn't play (and there were certainly a LOT of disappointed fans who had seen that advertised on the flyer & had come hoping it were true and saying nasty things about the con promoters who had totally jumped the gun on this!) I'm very happy to say that Jerry Only did come to the convention on both Saturday and Sunday and hang out quite a lot to talk to fans & sign autographs. He brought quite a lot of free goodies with him & was giving away two different posters (one a large color photo of him & the other the logo for Cyclopedian [sp?] music), Misfits stickers & guitar picks with the Crimson Ghost on them. (My friend Chris also talked him out of one of the massive black spikes on his gloves!) Got him to sign my "Walk Among Us" jacket that I've had for years (at long last!) & hopefully got some nice photos of him posing with his skull bass in front of an elaborately carved Chinese screen as well as Jerry posing with some of my friends. This time he was dressed to the hilt in full fiend regalia with his hair dyed black & wearing his trademark black eye makeup etc! Gotta finish that roll and get it developed now -if anybody is interested I can get some reprints made (assuming they turn out OK which they should) Jerry was extremely friendly & generous to all & made sure that everybody got their posters etc. Everybody had hoped that Doyle would come as well but since the Giants were playing down the street at the Meadowlands he went to the games instead. There was also some talk that Robo might drop by but I heard that instead he'd gone to the nearby tattoo convention (which I'd also hoped to check out but never got a chance to make it over to)., Also got a chance to meet UGLY THINGS publisher Mike Stax who'd flown out from San Diego for the convention and to visit with Jerry - he was selling his last two issues with Misfits articles in them & who knows, maybe gathering more info for more issues! While out east he'd also gotten to meet up with Franche Coma. Glad to meet Mike as I've been writing to him for a while now! Had hoped to meet up with our MBible member Crimson Ghost but he wasn't around - CG, sorry to have missed a chance to meet ya! Enjoyed the rest of the con as well & spent way too much $$ on model kits & jewelry. Heard that Pushead (Metallica & Misfits cover artist) was in attendance though I never was able to catch up with him - I did get a really cool limited edition sculpture based on one of his drawings though. A few comments on #26 - RYAN_JAS - To my knowledge the 'fits made those armbands themselves. I've never seen any for sale, not even bootlegged stuff. If you REALLY want 'em I'd suggest making 'em yourself out of heavy material or leather & using acrylics to paint on the ol' CG - a couple of my friends have made ones like that that looked pretty damn authentic. Geoff We@sel - ah, your friend isn't the only one who's gotten a tat of the M.W. Kaluta Yin/Yang design from Danzig 4 - I got that done myself Oct. 8th only 4 days after the album came out - one of my most impulsive acts (I usually think about tat designs for a year or so before I get 'em done) but then I'd been wanting some sort of tat to commemorate my fav band for quite a few years & this design was just too perfect, especially as Kaluta is one of my favorite artists. Anyway, it's almost all healed up now & looks GREAT! CrmsnGhost - well, sorry if you don't want to hear about what's going on in the life of Danzig. But let's face it, if this list was restricted to ONLY discussion of the Misfits only and not any of the other related bands formed by ex-Misfits it would limit things quite a lot. I mean honestly, how much can you come up to comment on twice a week on a band that's been defunct for 11 years? At least current activities of ex-Misfits give us more topics to discuss. I have always liked this song. It is a very unique song. It was sort of the predecessor of all the mellow weird stuff Glenn is doing now with Danzig. It is also interesting to note that this is the only song by the Misfits that Glenn plays lead guitar on. They recorded this song in one take with Jerry nodding his head when Googy was supposed to hit the drums and Glenn strumming and singing. Marc said > There's no possibillity to talk about new material and we all like > the old stuff... Wrong. There's new material to talk about. Not all the time but... The Misfits haven't gone away. They're still here. Belle said this > I'd be really interested in finding out exactly how y'all got into the 'Fits. So I got hooked on the band Danzig as soon as they came out and the Misfits were sort of a bonus. Everything that I've read and heard about as > far as disagreement go seems to surround Glenn and Jerry. This is certainly not true. Glenn wrote the song in 1974, long before it was ever recorded and when Bobby joined the band, it had already been released months earlier before any of them ever heard the name Bobby Steele. This is probably just another one of those bogus stories floating around mark ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Nov 1994 08:15:19 -0800 From: "Ricky Hinojos" Subject: Halloween Show Reply to: Halloween Show Did anyone else go? Engines of Aggression opened the show playing to a DAT tape. :) They really didn't belong there with Danzig, but I guess Glenn likes them. I think EOA would do much better opening fot Rage Against the Machine or some similar band. Anyway, Type O Negative came out next. I thought Krist Novoselic (sp?) from Nirvana was a big, tall gork. The bassist/vocalist from TON was *huge*! Or maybe the guitarist was a little midget. :) They included a goth-rock (60 bpm, ok, 40 bpm) rendition of "Paranoid" in their set. Danzig was, of course, next. They opened with "brand new god", then went into "little whip" which Joey managed to screw up the kick drum beat for the intro. The new stuff included "going down to die", "until you call on the dark", "bringer of death" :), and "stalker song". Joey really pissed of Glenn with that one. The song is coming to a close, Joey kept drumming. Four more bars, the song ends, right? Joey kept drumming. Oh, well, he's only been in the band for four(?) weeks... During the encore, Rob from White Zombie did vocals on "am i demon". Towards the end of the song, Rob picked up the pumpkins that were decorating the stage and tossed them into the audience. Big pumpkins. They threw the pumpkin pieces back at the band. John got one stuck on his guitar. He used it as pick for a few seconds then threw it to the side. :) And they didn't do "halloween"! :( :( Bastards. Oh, well, I guess they figured the KROQ/MTV crowd wouldn't understand. YEah, probably the most annoying brat on this list.. ME.. went out and bought Zeppelin 4 "runes".. oops, I mean Danzig 4p (sorry, couldn't resist!) My very first reaction was that I was impressed to see the band is trying out new stuff... packaging-wise, and musically. That photo of our boys lying in coffins with the law men standing by is as close to any kind of political message as Danzig has ever gotten... Bullet/Who Killed Marilyn? Kennedy references notwithstanding. "The powers-that-be would be glad to see us dead," if you will. And, hey, is Glenn's pose in that coffin not just a little bit of a retro-Horror Business pose? Yeah, I thought that'd be reading a little too much into it. Last 2 Danzig covers have been pretty nice... "Lucifuge" cover was just a Doors knockoff, and putting a Giger painting on your cover (DIII) is all very nice, but when I look at "How the Gods Kill" my first thought is "That's Giger," not "That's Danzig." Plus it's been done before. So I was pretty happy to see the new package all black with some weird permutation of the "beastie guy" skull and those damn runes... I can't even imagine what it could mean, other than just a literal spelling of "DANZIG"?? let alone figure out what the hell alphabet those symbols are from. As for the tunes.. well, there are still a couple of evil-erotic tunes aimed at teenage girls that I tend to choke on. "Going Down to Die" is a nice little showcase of Glenn's vocal capabilities though. And some of the vocals in other songs have cool weird distortion, kinda like a Nine Inch Nails song with someone who can actually sing. Maybe not surprising, however, is that my favorite tracks are "Sadistikal" and the mystery track. "Sadistikal" sounds like somebody sneaked a tape recorder into hell ("We've substituted this couple's regular brimstone with Folger's instant crystals..."), kinda reminiscent of good old Initium, except I gag on that line "My love is your hell"... Hack! Gaaack! Cough! >Wheeze!< WHew! Okay I'm alright now. Nice Hammond organ music or something of the like in that one too. And the mystery track is just kind of neat.. little choral chant. Kinda made me wonder, "what the hell is this, has my boombox suddenly decided to play me a Dead Can Dance album??" but it is a nice touch of something different to the album and has some pretty organ music in it too. In fact I kept expecting a David Gilmour solo to break out at any moment... (okay, that's the last wisecrack I get in) But seriously, folx, I am impressed with the bold steps in innovative packaging and variety of content this album presents. There! Are ya HAPPY NOW? In any case my good buddy mark sent me a dupe of Danzig 4p. This is possibly the best thing to come out of his mouth since HTGK. This sounds strange coming out of my mouth, but this album is great. more on that in a minute. First, as I told Mark, if you want to figure out what the symbols on the cover are, you fiends at school have the best possible resource to do so. Check out your libraries! I'll bet any money that if you look under subjects like; occult, ancient lang's, witchcraft, satanism, specifically books on languages you should be able to come up with something. If I've made any mistakes with song titles it's mark's fault for not writing them down properly! Anyway back to 4P, I can't believe how good this album is. I personally think this is like a tribute to glenn's many influences, and that in a nut shell is how I plan to present this collection. No flames please, I'm not trying to take anything away from glenn he's a great songwriter, I just feel that there are so many obvious musical influences that they cannot go unnoticed. Danzig purests will probably dislike this album even though it's some of the best stuff he's ever done. This album is *produced* big time. Rick Rubin is a musical genius and it's about time they (the band) started listening to him. after listening to 4p many times I think that glenn *is* trying to be more commercial. Fuck it God bless him, keep it up, purests be damned, this album rocks. A few weeks ago we had a thread going about the Metallica "Black Album" Why do I get the sinking feeling that 4p is destined to go down as *his* "Black Album"???? It's awful ironic that it also happens to be black with relief artwork! What a perfect tune to open up with "Brand New God" is all out, pure glenn danzig, All I can think of is a tune like "Hatebreeders" or "Night of the Living Dead", with all the "Whoa ohs". I can't help but think that this is what the 'fits would have sounded like today if they stuck it out. This seems to be the one song on the album that's not really produced, that in itself says something. this tune has got a real raw edge and it blends so well with the mellower part. "Little Whip" finds GD exploring the range of his voice especially the begining, real shades of Jim Morrison and the Doors there. The balance of the tune is like great early seventies hard rock. The way the machine gun drums follow the guitar is incredible, sort of like Jimi Hendrix or Led Zep in the Physical Graffiti era. I just love the way he builds the beginning of the tune with his voice. Listening to this tune you really start to wonder what went on between glenn and chuck. He is a great drummer, but then again glenn never could keep a drummer! This tune is one of the better offerings from this album. "Cantspeak" need I say more when I first heard this tune I literally couldn't speak. It's *fuckin' great* This sounds like a tune that should be on NIN's Downward Spiral. From the backwards guitar to the industrial distortion this tune is tied for my favorite. Which brings me to my co-favorite, "Going Down to Die" Love those Power chords at the begining. Glenn *really* sings his ass off on this one. Christ's guitar work is unbelievable, I never thought he had it in him. Well it's getting late and it takes 8 hours for my messages to get to mark, so I'll finish this review next week. This was printed in the New York Daily News on Oct. 11, 1994. It is reprinted without the permission of the Daily News, so don't go and tell anyone.-Again this is *not* my viewpoint so don't flame me Flame Jim Farber of the NY Daily News -CG ROCK BY BRUTE FORCE The Macho Posturing of Slayer & Danzig seems Past it's Time. By Jim Farber Daily News Staff Writer Testosterone has fallen on hard times. With college oriented, alternative music setting the agenda in rock, dumb macho moves no longer cut it. Today's rockers leave the sexist pose to rappers. Conventional male aggression strikes them as cornball. Instead rockers opt for the more brooding, arty take on virile emotion expressed through androgynous performers like Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor and Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan. So where does that leave old-fashioned brutes like Slayer and Danzig? Thick of neck, and dim of Mind, these acts fall further out of the loop of fashion than ever -- something they no doubt wear as a contrary badge of honor. Unfortunately, their new albums disappoint even by their own outright standards. For Slayer, the problem comes down to familiarity. Five albums into it's career, Slayer no longer startles or offends with its brand of speed metal -- and those were its two main selling points. If the band has surrendered none of it's velocity or contempt for melody, Slayer's latest release can't help but pale next to its terrific last one: an album cut in concert. Live, Slayer achieves an almost evil intensity. But its new riff volleys, tempo shifts and vocal barks sound like yesterday's cutting edge: fodder for the faithful. That's not without its commercial hook. With Megadeath and Metallica passing for mainstream acts, Slayer inherits control of a limited franchise: soon to be imprisoned 15-year-old boys. If Slayer's music used to transcend such niche marketing, Danzig's cocksure antics never could. As the only metal singer in history to croon, Glenn Danzig sounds as he's forever doing an impersonation of Jim Morrison as conceived by Bill Murray. Still he deserves credit for keeping a straight face while bellowing lines like "I am a walking screaming hell/a thing of torture to behold." >From beefy Glenn, such lines sound like commands from an S & M dungeon master. To complete the picture, his album includes ditties like "I don't mind the pain" and "Sadistika" which consists entirerly of someone being whipped to a pulp. Unfortunately, Danzig didn't intend such flourishes for zippy sex play. They're supposed to reflect the tyranny of teenage life. But the band's lumpy riffs and Glenn's oily vocal's wind up offering a kind of camp Gothic burlesque - precisely what gave macho stupidity a bad name to begin with. I thought Godflesh (who, btw, is the MOST KILLER band Earache has to offer) was touring with them as well?? 4P (reviews) -- "cantspeak" is my new fave Danzig song. No shit. Otherwise, I loved it, not the typical Danzig album (I KNOW I'm gonna get flamed for this), and an all around great album. PLus, didn't anyone catch that one guy's resemblence to Bill CLinton on the inside photo??? ;) 4P (meaning) -- huh....if that 4P-swastika is the same design I'm thinking of, I believe the folk/industrial band Current 93 uses a symbol similar to it...although DAvid Tibet (who pretty much IS c93) is not a Satanist, he is indeed a former
