Thing is, >Glenn actually _believes_ in God and Satan. Hey teevie :-) no offense meant, just because you like it dosn't mean that *you* are an ass hole. It just means that I *personally* think it's shit. Personally, I'm an "Non-Praticing Orthodox Atheist" I respect all religions, and study them quite a bit. I tend to know more about the bible than the average "bible thumping evangelist." the reason I object to the satanism shit is easy. It's a marketing ploy aimed at little kids, the 13 -> 16 year old group. I'm 28 and I, drove my parents nuts at that age. But really, all this music does is give kids stupid ideas, and they go out and break mailboxes and fuck around in general. That's my only point. I personally don't care what he's singing, I like the music, and the over all feel of the lyrics. Same is true about music like frank zappa. Sure, lyrics like "I'm gonna ram it up your poop shoot" are funny the first few times, but the music is incredible. The fact of the matter is easy, kids don't realize this, they think that Danzig is *really* a satanist, and they want to be cool, just like Glenn. The whole mess is really irresponsible on Glenn's part. When you get down to it the music is good and will sell regardless of what he sings (lyrically). So why dosn't he just come out and sing a normal song? I think he wants that stigma of being a bad ass. But gee wasn't KISS able to have that bad ass thing working by singing rocked up love songs? My point is it dosn't matter what he sings people like his voice. Personally, as a father, I wouldn't want my daughter listening to shit like this until she's able to understand it, and take it from the source.Glenn is someone who wants to be "ALTERNATIVE" but writes his lyrics to attract a certain audience (teenage boys), basically he's in it for the money and getting it without going totally mainstream. I don't know where you got this "Creepshow" title from. It's funny, though, I have a copy of the bootleg "Famous Misfits of Filmland", and it's basically tapes swiped off the compilation album, and on the back of the sleeve it says "Taken from the forthcoming release 'Lucifer's Penis Rising'". Now THAT would have been a funny title! Then in some guitar magazine, I read an interview with John Christ who said that the new Danzig album (which we all know as 4p) was to be titled "White Devil Rise". Anybody get the idea that when asked about the titles of albums before they come out, and before they have even actually decided on a title for the album, Danzig & co. just like to rip out with the first funny title that comes off the top of their heads? -- Neil McAllister (pcm2@netcom.com) | Santa Cruz, California, USA "Great art comes from the pit. Well, when I got my message, i too observed that they hadn't actually included the general info. Those people at American are a little disorganized and maybe somebody should let them know. Basically though, it's safe to assume it's a regular old mailing list. The first post i've received went out the other day. I can't decide if i should be sending them issues of the misfits bible. By the way gang, we have more than 95 people on this mailing list now and I've had to split it up into 2 separate mailings. Date: Thu, 17 Nov 94 17:03:00 est In the last MBible PumroyKJ98% asked about any Misfits videos - here a listing of all the ones I know of. They are all bootlegs floating out there - there were never any "officially released" ones. - 10/31/80 - Live in Detroit - this is the earliest known one I've found (which just turned up in the last year!) It's the only one that has Googy on drums - they also have a coffin on stage with them. Video & sound quality are both pretty poor, 35 min - 10/31/82 - NA Community Center, Bethlehem, PA - 36 min A really good copy of this recently surfaced when a friend of mine up in Allentown PA found a fellow who had a copy off the master!! It's the best live footage I've found! - ??, 1982 - Kalamazoo, MI - 13 min - have found a decent copy of this excerpt from a show - 1/7/83 - "Why Be Something You're Not" - Cable Access TV show done for cable station in Dearborn Michigan, 35 min. This is the one everybody's got - you can buy boots of it at any record show. They perform live & do a short interview - the interviewer asks Glenn his name & he said "Slim Whitman" - there are clueless ones on alt.music.danzig who think this is his real name. (Guess they haven't heard of ol' Slim... I thought it was pretty funny!) - 2/83 - Goleta Center, Santa Barbara CA, 27 min - all the copies I've seen of this are pretty crappy - tons of stage divers, look close and you can see Eerie Von up front working security! - 3/20/83 - Channel Club, Boston MA, 55 min (full version - there are many trimmed ones floating out there) This was originally shot to be released by Flipside magazine but never was. Pro shot with several cameras. Short videos also exist for: Braineaters - band and their friends sitting around a table while a formally attired chef comes out & dishes out helpings of brains while they bang their forks on the table & chant along... Skulls & Halloween - short promo clips edited together by somebody else later on of mostly live footage from the last Misfits show ever (Detroit 10/29/83) Others rumored to exist that I haven't been able to find: - An entire copy of the 10/29/83 final show in Detroit - Appearance on "the Uncle Floyd Show" - a NY based cable access show that I can basically best describe as "Romper Room for Drug Casualties". I used to watch it in the early 80's before I'd heard of the Misfits (sigh!) but they used to have lots of local punk bands on - remember seeing the Ramones on there a lot. Unfortunately even Uncle Floyd doesn't have a copy (the show was so low budget they'd re-record over their tapes!!) but hopefully a video copy exists out their somewhere, as an audio copy HAS surfaced. Anyway, they appeared on there 10/31/81 and did an interview and played "Vampira". [they also played Halloween - MSK] As for why Glenn doesn't like to talk about the Misfits - well, how would YOU like it if people kept wanted to ask you about what you'd done 11 or more years ago? I think he resents the fact that while the Misfits were together they were pretty much ignored - there aren't a hell of a lot of Misfits interviews & nearly all of them were in tiny fanzines (the biggest magazines that ever wrote about them at the time were Flipside, Slash and Forced Exposure - most of the other Misfits interviews I've found were in tiny zines of the xeroxed & stapled variety) Glenn feels that the journalists missed the boat and that they should have asked those questions at the time while the band was together. He has no interest in discussing what he considers to be ancient history. I won't even try to go into why the Misfits broke up..... suffice to say they didn't get along. Glenn started Samhain with his friend Eerie Von who had previously drummed for the Lodi band Rosemary's Babies. EV was in the same class in high school as Doyle & met Doyle while he was taking photos of the football team for the school paper. In '81 he started taking photos of the Misfits & hanging out with them & eventually worked as their roadie. When Glenn started Samhain he told EV he'd make a better front man as he had too much personality to hide in the back behind the drums, so Eerie took up bass. Samhain changed to Danzig when they signed to Def American - Rick Rubin saw Samhain play at the New Music Seminar in NYC & really liked them so he signed them up. Glenn felt that they needed more competent musicians so he recruited Chuck who he'd long admired & auditioned for a while to get a top guitar player & found the unknown John Christ. (Originally EV dubbed him "John Von Christ"!) (Actually you can say John Christ played for Samhain too as he played on some of the tracks on "Final Descent") Ack - this has turned into a short history lesson!!! The only other officially released Misfits LP besides Walk among Us, Earth AD, Legacy of Brutality & the 20 track self titled compilation would be "Evilive" which is a rerelease of the 7" that had come out years earlier.... The only other 12" format release would be "Beware" that was only released in the UK. The rest are bootlegs - some are great, many are crap. There are DOZENS upon DOZENS of them, on vinyl & CD. The best place to look for them is record shows, or check ads in magazines like Goldmine (excellent record collector's magazine) or Record Collector (UK collector's mag) or classified ads in the back of Maximum Rock and Roll or Flipside. (These are good places to check for original releases too). Some record stores, mostly the indie types, will also carry bootlegs. On another note, I'm still waiting for Glenn's comic VEROTIKA to come out. According to their publisher Val Jones it got hung up at the printers & was delayed a few weeks. But the Verotik booklet "Alphabet of Murder" is now out - its an alphabet of famous killers as drawn by Bad Otis Link, who previously had collaborated on the "Cannibal Trading Cards & recipes" with Rob Zombie & Chuck Biscuits. Alphabet of Murder is dedicated to Chuck's late brother (and former Danzig roadie) "Dim-wit" a/k/a Ken Montgomery Jr. who recently OD'd. In the back of "Alphabet" are some ads for Verotika & Satanika showing GREAT Simon Bisley covers - CAN'T WAIT to see those! I think I've rambled enough (can you say verbal diarrea?) .... Now off to some more Danzig shows (first stop Raleigh!) - next time I'll give ya some live reviews/reports!! (And if I miss the first few issues, well, I've got a good excuse!) - EVB ------------------------------ From: She Subject: Stuff from #32 Date: Thu, 17 Nov 94 17:13:43 EST This happened last time: > NIKOLOPOULOS@tne01.tele.nokia.fi said this: > > Now, I've got a question for you... I didn't go to see the Misfits or Samhain. Here's a little rundown of the show: (I don't want to ruin the surprise for anyone, so if you don't want to know what they played, read no further.) Of course they played the requisite 'Her Black Wings' and 'Killer Wolf' as well as 'Mother'. From 4p they played 'The Stalker Song', 'Brand New God' 'Little Whip', 'Until You Call on the Dark' and 'Going Down to Die'. If I remember corrctly, they played 'She Rides' and 'Twist of Cain'. Also from Lucifuge, they did 'Long Way Back from Hell'. From HTGK they played 'Do You Wear the Mark' and 'How the Gods Kill'. I'm sure they played more, I just can't remember everything. Right in the middle of the set the cops started macing people and everyone was coughing, even Glenn. They went off stage and Glenn came back and said "If you're wondering why your coughing, the cops just maced a bunch of people." It was a wonderful show, well worth the bumps, scrapes and bruises. I am 18 years old and I've been listening to the Misfits since 5th grade (@8 years!). I was very happy to find that at least 94 other people share the same (unholy) passion that I do toward Glenn and co. So - just yesterday Mark sent out the info on the list as well as some back issues. I enjoyed them thoroughly except for the contributions of one member (which I'll get to later). But first, to answer Mark's question: ASCAP stands for the American Society of Composer, Artists, and Printers (I think). I hope that this eases your mind. Also, I was reading through and found some stuff by Child In Heat, who says he/she lives in Northern Virginia. Where? I live in Stafford, just north of Fredericksburg and also get my records from Smash. I go to school at Penn State - so I haven't been there in a while. I'm going back in a few days, though. Care to elaborate? As I said, I found everything in the Misfits Bible great except for one contributor - "Big Ted." What the hell is up with this guy? Hey Big Ted- this a mailing list for the Misfits, NOT hemp, okay? I don't know how many people I speak for, but we're here to talk about Danzig and things related to him and his bands. What role does hemp play in any of this? NONE. Please keep your stoned-ass away from the keyboard if all you have to contribute is a few drug-hazed thoughts and pictures of bongs. We don't give a flying fuck! Do you think hemp is what got Danzig to where he is today? Do you think the songs are about pot? The Misfits, Samhain, and Danzig were/are bands who make music for people who want to explore the dark side and scratch the surface of the unknown - NOT to provide a soundtrack for your "high times." Am I alone in believing that Big Ted is totally missing the point behind the music? Is this the type of person who Danzig gears his music toward? I should hope not. Hey Big Ted, how do you think Glenn got that massive body and amazing vocal ability? Through hemp? Think again. Go listen to the Black Crowes or Snoop Dog or something if you want to relate to other fans who share your nice little habit. Well, that's all of the praise and gripes I can give right now, I'm really looking forward to the future issues. Once again, I am so proud that most of you out there share the same passion for such amazing groups. This will definitely carry on The Legacy of Brutality for many, many years to come. This is the second post concerning the show, evidently the first one didn't make it out to the BIble, only to a few people. Maybe this will work a little better. Went to the Danzig show at the Bombfactory on Thursday, November 17, and to quote Liz, it was a religious experience. Please understand that this is my first Danzig show, although I've really wanted to see them for a long time. This was kinda like dream come true. They were awesome, I thought. From II they played Long Way Back from Hell, and probably some more that I just can't remember because I was en-Thrall-ed (heheheh) by Glenn and his black latex shirt. >From HTGK they played HTGK, Left Hand Black (I think) and something else. I'm leaving out a lot I know, but that's all I could remember. Joey did a good job, to all those who are worried about a repeat of the Halloween show. Of course, I'm not a drummer, so I probably don't qualify to say that, but I still thought he was good. A lot different from Chuck though-Joey sits so low his knees are up at his chest. He's a real cutie too. Some of you already got the message sent before, where I told you guys that everybody got maced. Seems somebody got stabbed, and a crowd ran after the guy who stabbed him, and jumped on him. The cops maced everybody. It was floating in the air so bad that everyone, including Glenn, was choking. They went off the stage, and came back on and Glenn said "If you want to know why you all are choking, it's because the cops just maced everybody." Later on after the show, Eerie Von said that they didn't even know what had happened until Glenn asked what was wrong with the air in the club, why was everyone coughing so. I met the guys after the show, and as many of you already know, they were real nice. I got pictures with everyone except Joey, who couldn't be found. Since I was at the store anyway, I went ahead and got some *good* albums by good groups, most notably Bathory and Witchfynde :) :) Let me just reiterate how absolutely horrified I am. I have *always* found something to love on everything Glenn has done, even III (which I didn't like in alot of ways); there is only one halfway decent song on this and a couple of moments in other songs, the rest is just awful. I have generally been at the whim of the dealer, having to assume that he's actually charging a reasonable price. This is bad, especially in auctions. I didn't really intend for such a response when I addressed that letter to Big Ted. I'm really sorry if it pissed you off. It's just that I don't really see the point behind bringing hemp into the picture because ultimately it comes down to the music. I just get annoyed when people talk about things not related to the bands or the music, that's all. The lines about "exploring the darkside, etc." come from Glenn's mouth about what he's been trying to with his music (I used to have that interview on tape). Okay, yeah - I was too harsh on the flame-job, but then you turn around and do the same. You don't even know a damn thing about me. I don't know a damn thing about Big Ted other than his "habit" which was the only thing I addressed. Listen, I have NOTHING against you - as a matter of fact, I enjoy reading your contributions to the Bible - you are a very good writer/inside source that we all benefit from. But then again, you write stuff to me about how I'm some Alterno-punk asshole and that I need a life, etc. Man - if anything, I was among the Misfits' target audience: a bunch of young, individual, independent, crazy skateboarders who would make copies of the tapes/albums for each other, draw the Crimson Ghost on our boards and everything and go to the Samhain/Danzig shows before probably half of the people on this list heard of Glenn. So please don't pass judgment and I'll do likewise from now on. Once again I apologize for coming off like I did. It's just that I don't see how pot could ever help anyone in their "anti-establishment" lifestyle when the establishment itself does drugs (Marion Bary re-elected?). I am very anti-establishment. But do you know how I go about Fucking with the System? I get into the system (student government, big corporation, etc.) and then I rip it up from the inside rather than just sit around, smoke pot, and bitch. Last year at my former high school I managed to leak tons of info from the administration to the local press that resulted in the whole administration being turned upside down. I even got some folks fired. Now that school is a much better place to go to. That wouldn't have happened if I just sat on my ass. Glenn does it with the music, I do it through deception. They played Twist of Cain, How The Gods Kill, Her Black Wings, Its Coming Down and for the encore they played Mother and Dirty Black Summer. The concert was outdoors and Danzig took stage around 7:15pm when the rain kicked in and I think it added to the awsomeness of Danzig's set and unlike Suicidal Tendencies the band was well liked and was not afraid of the weather.. ST cut their set (thank god) after only 4 songs. I also think this is one of the last shows Chuck played because he left at the end of June and was replaced for the rest of the tour and when he wanted to return he was denied to be let back in so this had to be one of his final shows. Even though the weather was crappy Danzig played an awsome 45 minute set and I woulda liked to see them on for another hour they were great. ------------------------------ From: MISFIT20@aol.com Date: Tue, 29 Nov 1994 04:04:05 -0500 Subject: see ya Hey, everyone, lets asll take a few seconds to say goodbye to our old pal Jeffrey Dahmer as he goes to meet Lucifer in person. I am sure several people on this list have been record-hunting far enough around the country to give some kind of estimates as to average price for Misfits originals... as for me, if I were going to buy an original I'd just be happy to have it no matter the price as long as I could afford it. The problem for me would be making sure it was actually an original and not some bootleg being passed off as one. Anything not on the discography is obviously a boot, but there are some pretty nice bootleg copies of original 7"s going around out there. As for me, I've been pretty lucky 'cuz I've gone to nice places who sell them at reasonable prices so I know they were boots... but I know it would have been easy for them to have fooled me. Some 7"s like my "Night of the Living Dead" are easy to pick out and do stuff like say "Plan 6" instead of Plan 9... my Cough/Cool and Who Killed Marilyn? have unretouched xeroxes of the original cover, but you can tell they're xeroxes.. and on the inside there's no printing on the labels (plus I ain't optomistic enough to think they were actually selling originals for seven bucks)... but there was a really nice 12" bootleg of Beware which looked exactly like the original (I presume)... not that swirly deranged picture but that photo of Glenn, Jerry, and Bobby(I think? even though Franche was on the record) I've seen on a poster before, and the back cover had a picture from a comic book of a skull with a candle on it, and some little comic strip at the top. I presume this is what the original looks like, but I couldn't see anything distinguishing it from a boot except for the $16 sticker price and the "Made in UK" label identical to the ones I've seen on 7" boots. Mark said he knew how to tell the difference between the original Beware and this boot once... well, how do ya do it? I didn't end up buying it so I don't have it to look at right now. And is it just me, or is there a really authentic- looking Horror Business 7" floating around out there (never bought that one either)? To the Wolverine: I think I read on the sticker from my Earth AD CD that the "limited" edition which contains both Earth AD/Wolfsblood and Die Die My Darling tracks is limited to 100,000 copies. Not too limited, but I suppose not too shabby for finding it in Europe since I imagine it was pressed here in the states. As a result, you're not going to get a lot of stories about the concerts. From all the Bibles I have, I gather that the Bible is for people to express how the Misfits and Glenn's other bands/projects have affected their lives. How many of you lurk or post on alt.music.danzig? IMHO, the group doesn't specifically say Danzig the man or Danzig the band. So I just use it as alt.music.glenn, for all his work. As far as Samhain goes, you can buy just about anything used for 6-10 dollars. This doesn't include colored vinyl which should go from $40-60 or Unholy Passion 12" which can be found for $6 in some places and $80 in others. It really depends on the dealer. As far as the Misfits go, I don't think any of the 7" singles should be any more than $100 and I would never pay that much myself anyway. I'm looking for a reasonable deal about half that price. None of the reissued albums should be more than $8-$10 and even the first prints of those (which look almost identical to most people) shouldn't be that e expensive. Except of course, Walk Among Us. The 2nd press of that I got and see often for about $30. The original is more expensive. And the reissue is cheap as shit. In my opinion, only Beware should be in the triple digits. I"ve never seen that for sale less than $250. azrael said: > I forgot to mention a few things in my last message. Back in the old days when this used to come out more often, people complained and some unsubscribed, so I try to keep it going out twice a week. Even as it is, I sometimes think it should go out just once a week because the Thursday issue is usually pretty small. > Also I forgot to mention I did see Danzig on June 24th at Ionia > Fairgrounds. Interesting... Is this true? I was led to believe that Chuck left after the Metallica tour ended. That would have been a week and a half after you saw them. I know some pepole on this list were at the 7/3/94 show. Who was drummer then? Was it Joey or Chuck or someone else? Anywhere in Detroit is fine, we've always had a great audience in Detroit. Tens4life : What inspired the song "Mother"? GleDanzig : The PMRC and parents who forget what it's like to be kids, what it's like to grow up. JRock985 : GLENN, are you going to come out with a video for your latest song? GleDanzig : MTV refused to play the video for "Until You Call on the Dark." The video for "Can'tspeak" should be out the end of November. Let's see if MTV plays this. PaulB465 : is it true that James Hetfield helped sing in Twist of Cain? GleDanzig : Yes. He was in L.A. and we were hanging out. What's track 66's title? Very cool use of the harmonium! GleDanzig : Thanks, that's called "Invocation," it's only on the CD. Djwhill : Where did you get your belt buckle? GleDanzig : I had it made. CTernes : Are you planning on doing any SamHain or Misfits songs during your shows? GleDanzig : No. But you never know. FRNKRIZZO : How much do ya bench there tough guy? GleDanzig : Not much. GoingDn2D : What inspired goin down to die? GleDanzig : Accepting death as part of the cycle of life. GizMo5000 : What do you like best about your fame? GleDanzig : I don't know. Sometimes it sucks, but playing live is a great feeling. Tyriu : What do the symbols stand for on Danzig 4? Or at least what language are they? GleDanzig : Runes. It's a secret magical alphabet. They are from the Vehemic German Inquisition. Broyhill : What special instruments did you use on 4p? GleDanzig : A harmonium and electric sitar. Dark Lo73 : Will the comic books be available in all stores or only through mailorder? GleDanzig : Both. If your store won't get them for you, you can order direct from Verotik. Lord Shak : What would you say is your best album overall? GleDanzig : The new one. Eerie and I also have a fondness for Samhain 3, November-Coming-Fire. JamesH105 : Was there someone who inspired the song, " Her Black Wings? ' GleDanzig : Many. FarmBoy3 : How does it feel to be worshiped by hundreds of thousands of young women?? GleDanzig : I don't know if that's accurate, but if it is--fantastic. Tara2000 : What is your favorite song to perform? GleDanzig : It changes from night to night. I love doing "Stalker Song." Lunatik13 : I was wondering. . .what method do you use to write songs? Music then lyrics or just the opposite? GleDanzig : I have no set rules. DerekRei : When you were with the Misfits, you used a lot of B-movie ideas in your songs... Why don't you do that anymore? GleDanzig : My use of B-movie ideas may be overinterpreted. Social Edelmar : Was that a real chicken that your tore over that babe in the Mother Video real, or was it a rubber chicken? GleDanzig : It was real and I didn't kill it. Flan dog : Who's your role model? GleDanzig : Nobody, really. JAZZ09127 : you have so much raw energy...do you ever feel "burned out" performing live? GleDanzig : You can get burned out very easily on the road. The trick is to always be ready for the next show. BCON67 : What types of music do you enjoy listening to besides metal? Specific bands? GleDanzig : Lots of different types. Too many to list here. JowyG3117 : Glenn, I always wanted to know, are you a atheist, satanist, or a Christian like myfriends say you are? GleDanzig : All and none. Religion is bulls**t. CaptTal1 : Your music is very dark both in lyrical content and music. What started you in that direction? GleDanzig : Life. NIK13 : What was it like working with Johnny Cash and the late Roy Orbison? GleDanzig : Great. They were both really great guys and very humble, especially considering their accomplishments. StucP : Why did you get rid of Chuck? GleDanzig : Chuck quit on the Metallica tour. After the tour he wanted to rejoin and the band didn't want him back because of his personal problems. We couldn't trust him to perform at every show. It might have meant canceling shows, and we didn't feel that would be fair to the fans. Godsend 5 : Have you produced any other bands besides Kinghorse? GleDanzig : No. SLTedesco : Any plans to tour the midwest with the new album? GleDanzig : Yes, we'll be there soon. Check your local venue. Max Warner : Check the Warner Forum for all Danzig's confirmed tour dates Mr Zee 1 : I love your new song CANT SPEAK......whats the inspiration?? GleDanzig : That was an experiment of mine. I took a backwards song, put a beat to it, and started singing. The result is "Can'tspeak." Dirk0013 : I saw your show saturday at Mesa Amph. It was Great. Do you prefer large arenas or smaller clubs? GleDanzig : I don't like arenas. My favorite gig is 3,000-5,000 theatre. Mesa Amphitheatre is one of those. It was a great show. Max Warner : We will have Glenn answer a few more questions and then call it a night. Sorry we could not answer all of them GoingDn2D : You are awesome. Danzig is my favorite group and always will be. Have you read any good books lately? GleDanzig : Yes. The Encyclopedia of Satanic Cults and Murderers. H2OPOLOS4 : Why all the Scriptual allusion in your song titles? GleDanzig : Why not? Max Warner : Last question... ParkerGAT : Lately there has been much talk about Jagger and Richards being 50+ and still playing rock-n-roll; where do you see yourself at that age? GleDanzig : Dead. Max Warner : That was great. Glenn, thanks for stopping in and answering some questions. Max Warner : Well... That will wrap it up. Glenn, thanks again!! Glenn Danzig spreads a little darkness and joy American Recordings honcho Rick Rubin is fond of pointing out-- in a spooky mysterious tone-- that blues legend Willie Dixon's death coincided with his plans to record with Glenn Danzig. He also maintains that Danzig was in Roy Orbison's company the night before Mr. Pretty Woman passed on. Rubin-- who hides behind a Sasquatch-like beard and dark sunglasses-- reportedly has a standing order to his bands not to smile when being photographed. Not that anyone ever had to tell Glenn Danzig when to scowl. He's complying quite convincingly at an impromptu shoot in Harvard Square when a beat cop wanders by."Hey, it's a nice day," the cop chimes."Give us a smile!" Everyone tenses. The center spread of Danzig 4p, after all, is a photo showing a phalanx of carbine-armed troopers standing over Danzig's dead body. And a cop just told Glenn Danzig-- brooding heavy metal titan, fervent anti-establishment champion, and the all-around angry guy who fronted the notorious horror punk Misfits-- to cheer up. This could get ugly. But it doesn't. Danzig concedes a smile-- a tight, roguish smirk-- and politely, but briefly, shoots the breeze with the cop. In another time, on another street corner, the result might have been drastically different. But at 35 years old, in a career spanning nearly two decades, Danzig is learning to chose his battles. And perhaps his artistic satisfaction with 4p-- the culmination thus far of his vision of Danzig the band-- has enabled him to scratch out a little piece of mind. For Danzig, that's no little thing."It's very hard, because on one hand I can be a very violent person. To not be violent in a lot of situations I'm in is very, very hard." Here's a story: a little while back, J.L. O'Barr, author of THE CROW, began publishing a lesser-known series starring a character named Danzig who bore a striking resemblance to you- know-who. The real-life Danzig ran into O'Barr at a club and offered him a choice: cease and desist or suffer the consequences."And since I don't put that much stock in the legal system," Danzig recalls telling him,"that means you're going to have a BIG problem. I'm not just talking broken legs here, either." "I used to be a marine," O'Barr shot back. "You can keep talking like that when you're lying in a box with your arms crossed," Danzig said quietly. The comic-book character has not been heard from since. Back in Harvard Square, though it's barely past noon, it could be dawn or dusk for all the dimness of Danzig's hotel room; the lights are off, the shades are drawn. He's dressed in black from head to toe: cowboy boots, jeans, and a snug-fitting long- sleeved T-shirt with the sleeves pulled up his forearms. His black, shoulder-length hair is just beginning to thin on top, and the slightest bit of gray creeps at his temples. He speaks with a commanding deliberation. "This album is a big turning point for me," he says, explaining that writing and arranging Danzig 4p-- especially it's uncharacteristically introspective material-- has given him "a chance to go even further than I've dreamed of going. Some of the songs on here I'm surprised I had in me. Because, y'know, I've written a lot of fucking songs." With a history that includes seminal punk outfits the Misfits, their goth-thrash reincarnation as Samhain, and the matallic fusion that now bears his name, Danzig does have quite a few songs under his belt. He's even got a few wild cards thrown in: Black Aria, a six-song orchestral soundtrack/instrumental composition; "Life Fades Away," a song he wrote for Roy Orbison that's included on the soundtrack for the 1987 movie LESS THAN ZERO; and "Thirteen," a spare country number he penned for Johnny Cash's latest, AMERICAN RECORDINGS. Despite his versatility, Danzig 4p still comes as something of a surprise. It exudes a focus and depth that have been only hinted at since Rubin signed him and helped streamline Samhain's shifting, multi-layered roar into the tight, spartan metal arrangements of the first Danzig album. On his last two CDs, the focus has been restoring some of the texture that Rubin's early productions omitted."On HOW THE GODS KILL I got to produce the whole thing, which was great," Danzig says. "The last two records-- Rick and I worked together a little better. Rick sat back on the third record and got an idea of what we wanted.Eerie[Von,bass] and I wanted to bring back a Samhain thing, more of the moods, the different layers." But HOW THE GODS KILL came out uneven. With Rubin and Danzig collaborating on 4p, they seem to have struck a balance. "Brand New God" churns and squalls like the best of Samhain, yet the album's big surprise is a batch of three songs("Cantspeak," "Going Down to Die," and "Let It Be Captured") distinguished by their restraint. "You know what's funny?" he says. "Everyone's saying, 'Wow, you put piano on this, huh?' And I've had piano on every record since the Misfits. 'Theme for a Jackal' is just a one-chord song-- it's just ONE CHORD-- and it's piano." As a musician, Danzig is self-taught."I have two older brothers, and I just always heard loud music constantly. I remember seeing Elvis on TV. The first live band I saw was Black Sabbath with Ozzy. I think after that I saw Alice Cooper." His first gig as a singer was in a band who played Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and some blues originals-- and Black Sabbath covers. During his early days in New Jersey, he developed what became one of the most distinctive voices in punk rock-- a vibrato that he bandied like a vegas crooner on a bender in hell. Donning black leather and skull-and-crossbones T-shirt and dropping a greasy shard of his hair in his face (they called em' devil locks), Danzig stepped out with three like-minded rejects in 1977 and became the Misfits-- a collage of '50s B-movies, horror comics, and pop-culture nightmares funneled into two- minute bursts of frightful and often surprisingly catchy punk- rock epiphany. But could they possibly be for real? Skulls hanging from guitars? Songs about JFK, Halloween, and RETURN OF THE FLY? While everyone else was trying to figure out the answer, the kids were eating it up. Although the Misfits took on the roles of serial killers, Astro Zombies, or Teenagers from Mars, their lyrics resounded with adolescent thematic archetypes: alienation, frustration, rejection, awkwardness, solitude. Lines like "All I want is the world" and "I'm just waiting to exterminate this whole fuckin' place" could have been written by a Martian;they could also have been written in math class. "I think bands like us and a few other bands, certainly Black Flag, were doing something different that nobody understood," Danzig says. "We were all doing it at about the same time. Black Flag in LA, the Bad Brains in DC. And Henry Rollin's[pre-Black Flag] band,SOA, and Minor Threat. And there was SOMETHING:musically-- it was harder, of course than other stuff. And nobody got it. Just like nobody gets it now. I mean, the kids get it, but the press don't. As much as they try to be hip, they don't get it." But there were enough people who did, so by the time the Misfits ended, Glenn Danzig had become a minor legend. In his memoir GET IN THE VAN, Henry Rollins conveys his respect for the Misfits not so much in what he says but in the awe with which he describes seeing them for the first time. Even within the small circle of bands pushing punk to the next level, they had a palpable mystique. "I think until about '80-'81, originality was a plus," says Danzig."I noticed once a lot of straightedge bands came around-- and MAXIMUM ROCKnROLL came out-- it was,'Look like this, speak like this, talk like this, be politically correct and you'll fit in.' It was the reverse side of fascism. And a lot of people played up to that. If they didn't , they didn't get covered in MAXIMUM ROCKnROLL, except to get slagged. We got a lot of shit. People want to regulate what you believe. I don't buy that. It goes against everything that I felt punk was about, before it was even called punk." If there's anything that threatens to overshadow Danzig's music, it's his image. Media-friendly is not in his vocabulary."The reason I get fucked with by the press constantly is because I tell everyone to fuck off, and they don't like that. Because they think they're very powerful, and that you should be respecting them because they're in this magazine and they can do so much for your career. I don't play their game. It's either lets do a real interview, about music, or about life. You wanna talk about life? Well, life doesn't have easy problems." And his solutions are not politically sanitized. At a time when the media are hyper-sensitized to the glamorization of violence, his macho bravado is an easy target. But he's confronting his own destructive impulses in the best way he knows how, and he's not too worried if that rubs people the wrong way. I read him a quote from Johnny Cash:"I don't know about you or anyone else, but there's a good side and a bad side to me, and every day it's a battle to keep the good side winning." "I can understand that," he chuckles. "It's not so much that it's a battle for me to keep the 'good side winning.' What is the good side, y'know? The way I see it is that the line are a little more blurry with me. It's very hard to keep an even take on things-- especially when you've got a gun in your face or something. So it depends on the situation. Usually one side in bad situations will dominate. Now I don't really try to keep either side winning. I just try to stay in the middle somewhere and it balances out." -----BY CARLY CARIOLI BOSTON PHOENIX, November 25, 1994... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Nov 1994 23:50:07 -0500 (EST) From: Katherine T Sumner Subject: miscellaneous I'm trying to put off my history paper as long as possible. . . . > From: NIKOLOPOULOS@tne01.tele.nokia.fi > > This is a list called "the Misfits Bible" right? A lot of people don't, since it never went through official channels for approval. Some people (I think our sponsor may be one) don't go there because they just don't like Usenet. I have to admit a list gives a more "cozy" feeling. Danzig-the-group gets talked about a lot because it is the only active band right now. If you want to talk more about the Misfits, why not try to start a conversation yourself? You must have some input. . . . As for the name being misleading . . . I have to disagree. The list isn't just for Glenn Danzig's bands, it's for anyone who had any sort of connection whatsoever with the Misfits. The Undead or Kryst, for example. Should we slap a "Glenn Danzig" label on them? [damn...lost my attributions...] > I forgot to mention a few things in my last message. First I was > thinking if the digest comes out more frequently then people will respond > more frequently and pick up the mail not have 2 - 4 day hiatis of the list. Nah. The list came out everyday at first and that was ridiculous. It's hard enough for me to keep up with it now, because of my non-Misfits obligations (yes, I have a few). Also the list has grown considerably. When it's twice-weekly, I get the opportunity to read it before three more have piled up, and maybe even respond. > I recently bought the Earth A.D. Gold disk. It costed $25 (ceedees are here > expensive!!) but I wondered how "limited" it is? Was it worth the Money or > could I better bought the Earth.ad/ wolfsblood ceedee? 1. I'm not sure what you are talking about. I wasn't aware of an Earth A.D. cd besides the gold disk and the one with Evilive (is that what you are talking about? I thought it was waaay out of print!). 2. How limited is it? That's a question I was thinking of asking the list myself. I think I heard the figure of 15,000, but I can't verify it for you. Whether it's worth it or not--who knows? I bought a vinyl copy of Walk Among Us, which was a cut-out. That means there was a BIG excess at one time. Now they are real collector's items. 3. Thanks, you did me a real favor. I got out both my cd copies of Earth A.D. and discovered that the Evilive version is missing one track: Mommy. So I know that *I* didn't waste my money buying the gold version, cause it has an extra song :) (no, I *don't* feel negligent overlooking that for years! About 4:30 a big green and silver Bus almost ran into my car as it pulled into the back lot. John Christ was sitting in the front next to the driver. We all walked over to where it parked, and the guys came out and went into the back of the hall. After a while, we heard the soundchecks, and "Dirty Black Summer" vibrated the walls of the place. We waited. About 5:30, Glenn Came out and gave autographs for the small group of people around back. He sat on the steps in the bus and people took turns talking to him and shaking hands with him. I was scared he wouldn't sign my shirt (since I made it myself) but he saw that it wasn't a bootleg, and signed it to me. I was surprised at how friendly and polite he was. After we got his autograph, we went around front and got in line. Godflesh was first, and their set was kind of short. They weren.t bad, tho. People started to get excited when Type-O came on. I don't know their mucis, but they did a half-speed, evil sounding version of Sabbath's Paranoid. After they went off, it was a long while before The stage was ready fot Danzig. We were real close, in front of the pit even (we were in the pit for the other bands) I was hanging on the rail when they came on. (If you want to be surprised, don't read this ) They played a while, Brand New God, Little Whip, Call on the Dark, then It's Coming Down, Snakes, HTGK, Dirty Black Summer, Left Hand Black, Mother, Twist Of Cain, She Rides (loud!), Going Down to Die, Stalker Song, Long Way Back, and some others. The encore was killer, too. I'll leave it at that. Anyway, It was a great time, We had to move back early in the set, because it was so loud the backup vocals hurt. We went back right behind the pits, and it was plenty close. I've never been that close to any band, had no trouible seeing, (or Hearing) Bt the way, it was John's home town, so he spent the night with a big grin on his face, and probable had as good a time as the rest of us. Date: Thu, 01 Dec 94 15:03:00 est Sorry I've missed a few Bibles but I've certainly had a good excuse! Anyway, I'm home for two days before I set out again so figured I'd e-mail in a report from the road! Well, I've been off at it again - road tripping around the country to see Danzig. The first show that I made it to on this tour was in Raleigh NC the day before Thanksgiving at the Raleigh Civic Center, where I got a chance to meet up with a TON of fans I've met down in NC at previous shows. In Raleigh I learned from Glenn that there were TWO New York City shows instead of the one I knew about as they'd added a second date at Roseland on Friday the 25th as well as the previously announced one Monday the 28th, so it quickly became "well, I guess I'm going to NYC then" even though I'd originally planned to go see Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson in Hampton that day. Sorry Trent (bet he's crushed - ha!) but I have my priorities! He also told me that since the 2nd Detroit show didn't happen they'd be playing in Indianapolis on the 6th. It was the first time I got to see both Godflesh and Type O Negative even though I already was a big fan of both and had all their CDs. I know Glenn has been a HUGE Godflesh fan for years so he's real happy to have them around. And I was thrilled that they got Type O - last summer Glenn had told me that for opening slot he was considering Tool, Rage Against the Machine, the Offspring (before they got huge overnight) and Type O and I know I pleaded a bit for Type O! Peter Steele from Type O is certainly having fun playing around with the lyrics of the songs to suit the headliner - in "Black Number One" the line "on her milk white neck, the devil's mark" has inevitably become "Glenn Danzig's mark" (making me in my black dyed hair in the front row laugh like a damn fool & wondering if the Danzig yin/yang tat on my upper chest along with the Lucifuge cross necklace I was wearing had influence on that crack....) And in "Christian Woman" instead of "Jesus Christ looks like me" it sometimes becomes "John Christ looks like me" and he's also made a few cracks about "and this is our new drummer, Chuck Biscuits" or "If you have any problems with the show, take it up with our manager Chuck Biscuits". Steele is REAL sarcastic but pretty funny. Met him after one of the shows & he was rather reserved but very polite - got him to sign my Bloody Kisses digipack and poster though I don't know how anybody could get "Peter Steele" out of that signature - it looks more like the sort of webs spun by spiders on acid. Anyway, Danzig have been brilliant as usual! The stage set is different - gone are the huge skull drum riser & the gargoyles that used to flank the stage and the Giger backdrop. The new backdrop is based on the Simon Bisley cover painting to the comic "Clive Barker's Hellraiser" #2 of a stretched human skin mask. They've got a new track lighting system that slides back and forth & works real well - thrown over the lighting are the netting they used in the "Until You Call on the Dark" video. They open the set with "Brand New God" then into "Little Whip", "Until you call on the dark" and "It's Coming Down". From the new lp they also play "Going Down to Die", "Bringer of Death" and "Stalker Song". Old favs remain, like "Mother" & "Twist of Cain" of course, plus "Left Hand Black", "Her Black Wings", "How the Gods Kill", "Snakes of Christ", "Long way Back >From Hell" & "Dirty Black Summer", For encores they've been doing "Heart of the Devil" and "Am I Demon" alternating with "Killer Wolf", "Pain in the World" and "Do You Wear the Mark". On stage Glenn's wearing a cool rubber shirt with long sleeves that zips up the front (he sweats like CRAZY in it - I told him I was surprized that he could keep it on for the whole set & he told me its because he's stubborn...) & has been coming onstage wearing the large upside down crucifix pendants like on the Lucifuge LP. In Raleigh he tossed it right to me & luckily I made a good catch & slid it down my cleavage before any knuckledraggers could have a chance to try and grab it from me, so now I've a great new accessory for shows! (MUCH nicer plating job on this one than on the one I bought thru the mail a few years ago). >From Raleigh my friends & I drove home for Thanksgiving, then set out the next morning for NYC & the first Roseland show which was great!! The second one on Monday (28th) wasn't half as good in my opinion (except that they did "Pain in the World" which I love). Of course it didn't help that the crowd got REALLY rowdy with way too many folks surfing on top of the audience and flying over the barrier faster than the security could catch them. One guys head cracked open & there was blood all over the flood. I got bonked hard on the head during "Twist of Cain" (that song always wakes 'em up) and security dragged me over the barrier & out to an alley behind the club where a medic checked me over. She didn't want to let me back in until it was over but I pleaded so they let me watch the rest of the show from backstage. (Well, as I've always said there are only two ways to get me out of the front row during a Danzig show - dead or unconscious!) As they came off EV spotted me & came over & gave me a hug - I asked him how things were going and he was like "oh, it's cool - you know, the same old shit!" & gave me a huge grin. Love his new hat - looks like something stolen from Al Jourgenson's closet. Then we headed from NYC down to Glen Burnie, MD for the show Tuesday the 29th at Michael 8th Avenue - where they played last March for 98 Rock's birthday bash. That show had been the first time they played "Stalker Song" live so when they played it Tuesday Glenn reminded everybody that it was the place where they'd first done it live. Thankfully the Baltimore crowd wasn't anywhere near as violent. (So far I've found the most violent crowds to be Detroit, New York and New Orleans) As far as merchandise goes they've got some GREAT new shirts - IMHO the best selection yet. There are 3 new T shirts ($23 each) - two are variants of the Rorschach cover design by Glenn and the 3rd is a really cool drawing of "Little Whip" by FAUST artist Tim Vigil. They went into production late so didn't show up for sale until the 2nd NYC show. There's also a long sleeved t shirt of the Kaluta yin/yang design ($27), a bandana of the Kaluta design ($10), stickers ($3) and my favorite piece, a long sleeved thermal sweater type shirt with the Rorschach cover design & "Danzig 4p" and the Germanic runes embroidered in black and silver thread in the upper right hand corner ($35) - finally, a subtle enough Danzig shirt I can wear to work! Still haven't had a chance to meet Joey but hopefully will soon - I think he's doing a great job and I know that it's hard to follow Chuck's shoes. I know he's still learning songs - they haven't yet played "Cantspeak" live (aside from the Jon Stewart show on Monday) but they've been rehearsing it during soundchecks. So now I'm home for two days to rest up (need it too - I've got a TON of bruises) then off to Philly on Saturday, then Detroit on Monday and Indianapolis on Tuesday, then a week or so back home before I fly out to Oregon for the shows in Salem & Seattle! Reading the latest few Bibles with some amusement but here's a few basic comments #1 - GLENN DANZIG DOES NOT USE STEROIDS! Never has, never will and he thinks anybody who does is nuts. He is VERY careful about his body and takes care of it and would not abuse it in such a manner. He works out a lot, particularly doing martial arts under his personal trainer Jerry Poteet (who was one of Bruce Lee's students). I don't understand why people think he does steroids - in reality he is NOT that big (the funny thing is he looks MUCH larger in photographs than he does in real life) So I'm REALLY getting sick and tired of the clueless folks who don't know him and keep insisting that he does!! (That's right - insult Glenn & incur the wrath of Liz!) #2 - Prices on original Misfits stuff - I can give some basic guidelines - these are prices I generally see in collector's shops & record shows as well as in GOLDMINE magazine (great place to check for rarities - BTW I wrote a Misfits discography for them a few years back when I friend of mine wrote an article for them) Prices are for Mint/Near Mint - for lesser condition figure downwards accordingly. "Cough/Cool" 7" on Blank Records - good luck. I haven't seen one for sale in years, I wouldn't expect to see it for less than $300-400, and I heard of one going for $800 in Germany where there are some really manic collectors.. (I paid about $175 for mine about 6 years ago) Plan 9 Singles- "Bullet", "Horror Business","Night of the Living Dead" - around $100-$150 "Halloween","Evilive", "Three Hits from Hell" - about $60-100, slightly more for Fiend Club edition of Evilive with different cover. (Set of 3 ltd edition Evilive - your guess as good as mine, prolly around $500 or more) White vinyl 3 hits, about $150 Black "Horror Business" - good luck. Heard Bobby wants $2,000 for his. "Teenagers from Mars" acetate (5 made) - a friend of mine just got one of these so they do indeed exist. (It was a gift to him from Jerry!!) I actually touched it and its real! I have no idea on value but Jerry insured it for two grand. 12" "Beware" - $200-$250 "Walk among Us" - first pressing pink cover about $50-$80, more for Italian issue "Walk Among Us" - 2nd pressing purple cover, pink lettering $25-$50 "Walk Among Us" - reissue purple cover, green lettering $8-10 "Unholy Passion" black vinyl- $40-$50 Colored vinyl 12" - "Initium" red vinyl, "Legacy of Brutality" white or red, "Die Die" white or purple - $60-100 (400- 500 of each) Marbled "Initium" - $150-$250, same goes for White "Initium" Pink "Initium" - ?? (have one, only one I've ever seen, have no idea how many were made) Pink "Legacy of Brutality" - I paid $320 years ago which was a steal, have heard of them going for $900-$2,000 at auction "November Coming Fire" Orange - about $100 Yellow, clear or purple "Earth AD" - about $100-$200 (200 of each made) Green "Earth AD" - $300 (only 100 of these) "Unholy passion" - $60-$100 for white or red vinyl As far as telling originals from bootlegs. Use some common sense - its not THAT hard to tell if something was pressed up yesterday or its 15 years old! Generally anything that old is going to show some age - for example my "Cough/Cool" 7" has some very slight browning on the edge of the sleeve where the paper is a little more brittle. I'd also be VERY wary of any price that's too good to resist! There ARE counterfeits out there that are very close. If anybody has specific questions e-mail directly - if need be you can send to me to authenticate (believe it or not I do this for some collectors stores!) There is a 12" Beware boot that is nearly identical to the original - even the writing in the runoff grooves & the label on the record itself. The only difference is in the half tone screen if you look REAL closely since the cover art was shot from a copy of the record & not the original art. I think the writing on the spine is slightly off kilter too if I remember correctly. If its $16 & looks new its a boot. The originals go for about $200-250. Finally got a copy of the "Until You Call on the Dark" video - my friend Cathi flew down from Canada for a few shows & brought me a copy she'd taped off MuchMusic (Canada's MTV) as well as an interview with Joey, EV & John that had been broadcast Oct 11th, the day 4p was released in Canada. Glad to finally see it - funny, but it actually reminds me quite a bit to the Nine Inch Nails video to "Wish" - very similar idea/theme if you ask me. Thanks out to RYAN_JAS for printing the article from the Boston Phoenix!! Ah, the J. O'Barr story comes out... I'd heard about that one from both sides. Glenn says the picture O'Barr traced off was the photo of him on the cover of Unholy Passion & he told O'Barr he wouldn't sue if it never got published. Definitely a lot of his other pieces look suspiciously like Glenn tho - last summer I bought a really nice O'Barr pen and ink pin up of the Crow that had been published in AMAZING HEROES magazine that looks suspiciously like Glenn in the "Her Black Wings" video. (I confess, that's the major reason I had to have it!) Did anybody ever notice the back cover of CALIBER PRESENTS #1, the comic with the first appearance of "the Crow"? The back cover is an O'Barr painting of Crow that is traced off the photo of Doyle on the back cover of "Walk Among Us": Best close for now - time to hit the road again. Just got home a little while ago from seeing Danzig in concert at the Strand in Providence, RI. It was absolutely incredible. Nearly half of the songs they played were from 4p, and the rest was from the others. They played for well over an hour, and rocked all the way through, as usual. I would definitely recommend checking them out if they come to your area, because it's a terrific show. Godflesh was excellent. When they went on not many people were there yet, so they didn't get much of a response, but they were great in spite of that. I didn't care much for Type O Negative, but then again I've never been a big fan of theirs. I think they only played like four songs, but they were all like 10 minutes long. Most of the crowd got into it though. The crowd, by the way, was awesome. Not too many assholes, and an excellent pit. There were a couple of skinheads there who were trying to cause trouble, but they didn't do much. Anyway, the concert as a whole was terrific. I want to go see them in Boston tomorrow but I can't. If anyone goes to that show let me know how it goes. Oh, and to Stephen at IU, what's up? I'm a fellow Hoosier and I saw your post and thought I'd say hi! I think there's a guy who posts here from BSU, but I can't remember. Anyway, check out Danzig when they play Indy on the 6th of December and let me know how it goes. I saw them at City Lites last year and the show was the best Danzig show I've ever been to. I was surprised because Indy shows usually suck, but this one was incredible. I won't be home for Xmas yet so I won't be there. Say hi to the guys for me! BTW, I was reading in the last Bible about the prices for records, etc. and I think it was Mark who posted that Unholy Passion runs between $6-$80. That's incredible. I only saw that once, and the store had two copies, both for $150. One was on white vinyl and I don't know what the other was. Are those limited editions or something, because they were extremely expensive. I bought Evilive there on 12" green vinyl for $75, and I thought that was a pretty good deal. Did I get ripped off? I think I might try to talk him down on the Unholy Passion because I'd really like to have that. That's the first and only time I ever saw it, but I just couldn't afford it. It would be so easy if there were actually common prices for those things. It varies so much I get confused! Anyway, I could probably write more but I think I'll go to bed and be elated from the show. Cya all later! They performed their new single, "cantspeak". It was weird. John was playing the part from "let it be captured" (I was right about the chords, Flemming!), but they also had the cool harmony coming from somewhere, and it wasn't John's guitar. They also had some auto-wah or flange effect to get a weird sound to simulate the backwards guitar. Maybe the played to a DAT tape. Oops, don't flame me, only a suggestion. :) Joey's drumming was okay, not as good as Chuck's, IMHO. Finally saw that Joey has a four-piece drumkit with a single-pedal kickdrum, very similar to Chuck's. Unless the kit is Glenn's, and took it back from Chuck when he left. =) They even put the distortion on Glenn's vocals when the time came. They also edited the song for time. Bastards! Oh, well. I've said before that the song would be kinda hard to play live, but I guess it's now part of their setlist. I guess they have to please American and the teenybopper "mother" fans. =) During the credits, they did "brand new god", with Eerie on background "whhoaahhs". But the cut it off at the F# chord right before the doomy riff in the middle. "and i will slay you there, for my brand new god..." Neat to hear him respond directly to crap like what kinda runes are on the 4p cover. Is that Nazi shit, or what? I remember Glenn waving the "Occult Roots of Nazism" book in his first lil' home video, and indeed I know the swastika was originally something like a Hindu symbol for good luck if clockwise, bad luck if counter-clockwise. Neat to find out James Hetfield actually WAS singing on the 1st album... I always used to listen to the chorus of "Possession" and think "Wow.. that sounds like.. naww, it couldn't be." Funny to see Glenn being a smartass egomaniac at times.. but I guess that comes with the territory. Also interesting to hear he expects to be dead at "50+"... one never knows how seriously to take stuff like that. I guess you can see a lotta suicidal themes in some of his lyrics... recently "How the Gods Kill" and "Going Down to Die" (incidentally, anyone else ever notice the lil' backmasking present in HTGK's title track? Little joke on all the Ozzy/ Judas Priest trial stuff I guess) With the fairly recent death of public animal #1 GG Allin I figured I'd seen the last of the true rock'n'roll villains, but hey, maybe Glenn's got some nasty plans up his sleeve for the future. And my how he does love violence at that. Hmm... I've had this little picture in my mind for some time of a kind of rock triumvrate... Glenn Danzig to Henry Rollins to Ian Mackaye... kind of a funny little balance with Henry as a bridge in the middle. Henry knows both other guys... he used to have long hair (like Glenn now) but now shaves it short (like Ian)... and he used to beat the shit out of people (like Glenn) but now has kinda mellowed out, almost PC (like Ian) but in a highly marketable way (unlike Ian), and yet he never has denied his past (unlike Glenn). Anyway it doesn't really mean anything, but it's just a little poetic type of concept I got once and never could figure out what to do with it, so I thought I'd throw it out at you folks. I've been getting the Misfits Bible for a few weeks now, but this is the first time I've written in. I would just like to make a few comments on the steroids issue currently going in the Bible. Firstly, as a bodybuilder of ten years (competitive for the last four years or so) I'd just like to say that I do know what I'm talking about :-) It is quite obvious to me that Glenn Danzig has never used steroids. I can tell this basically just by looking at him. Someone else said he was a `huge hulk' or something, which isn't true for a start. He looks big when you see him in photos and on film, but in the flesh he can be seen for what he is: a small guy with quite a good physique. Let's remember that he's only 5ft 4ins tall. And *please* - I am not dissing Danzig by calling him small, just stating facts, so no flames! Glenn's build (short, stocky), plus his training ensures that he will look bigger in physique than someone taller. It's obvious that he works out as his physique, while by no means outstanding, is impressive to most `mere mortals.' I dunno, it just seemed to me that some people were of the opinion that you can take some steroids and become huge overnight, without doing any training. This simply is *not* true. You can take steroids, but for muscle to grow you *still* have to work out, simply because for muscles to grow they have to be put under stress and stimulated. Steroids can be a short-cut to muscle gain, but you still have to work your guts out in the gym; that's a fact. Anyone who thinks popping a few `roids and then sitting around doing nothing is going to give them a good body, is going to be in for a disappointment. Well, er, there you go, that's my little lecture over ;-) It's obvious Glenn does work out, but as for steroids - no way. -Moose- ------------------------------ From: CrmsnGhost@aol.com Date: Sat, 3 Dec 1994 18:41:29 -0500 Subject: Oh No, Not Again!!! Why I think the Misfits will miss the boat (Again) This is a very simple fact. If Jerry & Doyle don't get their collective act together soon, they're going to miss the party. Let's start out by going back to the 50's. Big band was dead, the only thing happening was predominately white garbage like "how much is that doggy in the window" or "Mr. Sandman" things were stagnant. Then all of a sudden Bill Haley comes along with "Rock around the clock", the rest is history. This type of sound lasted for about ten years, it started to get boring after a while. Then, BOOM, the Beatles explode on the scene breaking new ground and introducing America to the Mersey beat. This didn't last long however, before you new it LSD was on the scene and everone was "Tuned In, Tuned on and Dropped out" Jimi Hendrix ruled with a hell bent Stratocaster for a scepter. The 60's gave way to the corporate rock sound of the early 70's. Bands like Led Zepplin and Deep Purple, were very produced BIG sounding acts. These bands conquered the scene for the next 7 years. But all the while the music was getting old and boring, stagnant, the kids of the day yearned for something more free. There prayers were answered in 1977 when the Sex Pistols broke the corporate barrier. Now, here is the crux of the biscuit. Did anyone ever notice the similarity between punk and the music of the fifties??? Not just the music mind you, but the whole mind set. The children of the 50's were just like the children of the late 70's. Ok, the children of the late 70's were alittle wilder granted, but you can see the parallel. To get an understanding of what I'm saying go out and rent "Sid & Nancy" and "Blackboard Jungle" watch these 2 movies back to back you'll get the idea. What I'm trying to say is that, musically we're going in circles, it's fuckin' Catch 22. 1991 was 1954, the natives were bored again. This time it was grundge that came to the rescue. Nirvana answered a need. Face it, it's punk with a 90's edge on it. Check out what's hot right now, bands like Green Day, The Offspring, Danzig, Fuckin' Rollins for Christ's sake, he can't even sing!! So basically if Jerry & Doy don't get it together and quick they will miss the boat, if they haven't missed it already. Back then they didn't get they're first album out until 1983, just under the wire. If that album had come out in 1978 things would have been different. well guess what Jerry it's 1983 all over again, you guys better get moving or the 1990's version of New Wave will shatter your dreams. And that's all I'm trying to say, it really would suck if they didn't make it because of the 90's version of Bow Wow Wow! +---------------------------------------------------------+ |The Crimson Ghost |"God save the queen, from | | | facist regime" Johnny Rotten | || | | |"Castles made of sand melt into | |Hopatcong, NJ USA | the sea, eventually" Jimi Hendrix | +---------------------------------------------------------+ ------------------------------ From: NIKOLOPOULOS@tne01.tele.nokia.fi Date: Mon, 5 Dec 1994 14:43:44 +0300 (EET) Subject: "Danzig" Bible, top10, and some other stuff To "the Crimson Ghost" : I agree that this list should not become the Danzig newsgroup, that was my point too. I dont remember the exact year (late late 70s) but The Damned invited the Misfits to do some opening slots for them in England. The Misfits came over and they didnt really know what to expect from the English crowd. The minute, the Misfits set foot on stage, the crowd hated them! And so the Misfits (Especially Glenn) hate the crowd. Their first ever show on that gig was cut short after only a couple of songs cause Glenn got in a fight with some skinheads, which ended up in the whole band participating (with the help of their instruments)... I dont think the Misfits came back to England... BTW, I wasnt there. If anybody got similar stories about the Misfits , share it with the rest of us. This comes from the new issue of GUITAR magazine. It's a brief article about the latest success involving Glenn and Co. DOUBLE DANZIG GOLD: Six years ago when Danzig's eponymous first album debuted, any bets that it would go gold seemed to have a prayer's chance in hell. Better drop some missals south of heaven, oh ye of little faith because that 1988 release just topped the 500,000 mark along with last year's *Thrall-Demonsweatlive* EP (both recordings contain what's become the band's signature tune, "Mother"). John Christ, Glenn Danzig, and Eerie Von were presented their double gold awards in October after appearing for a surprise set at The Whisky in Hollywood, marking the arrival of DANZIG 4 and introducing the band's new drummer, Joey Castillo (formerly with Sugartooth). While live on the air at both KROQ and KNAC in L.A. the morning of the show, Glenn announced the gig and set in motion a day-long takeover of Sunset Boulevard as fans swarmed to the club. Additionally, the band had a pre-show in-store engagement at Tower Records on Sunset, signing over 800 autographs before heading two blocks away to take the stage at The Whisky where the in-store mob followed them despite torrential rainstorms. With another 700 fans who'd braved the weather to wait in line couldn't get inside for Danzigs' performance, they formed a giant mosh pit outside The Whisky once the band's set began. It took 15 police units to calm the slamming crowd. -L.A. * * * * * * * ** * * * ** * * ** Okay, so never mind the gold thing and all that mosh pit crap. The reason I put this up is because it says that this was the show that introduced Joey as the new drummer - which hopefully sheds light on the question(s) concerning his first show with the band etc. Then again, this could be false information, which as I'm sure you know already has been very prevalent concerning Glenn and his relationship with the press and the band. The article didn't even give the date of the show (sorry!). It just had the above text and a picture of John, Glenn, and Eerie holding their awards covered in sweat. Glenn's bare-chested and DOES look like he's lost mass (for all the steroid folks). Did anybody out there go to the show or at least know WHEN it occurred?? I think that would help out the Joey/Chuck situation a lot. I'm surprised nobody really pressed Glenn with the specifics of the break-up on that AOL interview. Oh well. Since this article came from a guitar magazine, I thought I'd ask if there's ever been any transcriptions, etc. ever posted in the Bible. Was there ever? Finally, that article put in the last Bible was great. I especially LOVED the part about Glenn's confrontation with J. O'Barr in the nightclub. Maybe that's why there was nothing from Danzig on THE CROW soundtrack?? Something to think about................... I remember that for about 2-3 years ago there was a lot of commotion when they played in Holland and some other European countries. There shows had to be cancelled or Steele somethimes had to wear a bulletproof jacket. There shows were blocked by left wing youth and punkpeople (sorry for my bad english). But today they are almost everywhere hyped. I watched that time an interview on tv with Steele, and he was making some very incorrect statements. Such as " people without a job don`t want to work, I have to work, so why shouldn`t they work?" and more of crap like that. I don`t want to call him a fascist( I don`t know much about him and labelling people is always a bit tricky), but I wouldn`t like to support a man with such opinions by buying his cd`s. Their music is not bad, allthough sometimes it sounds a bit forced. Especially the song Christian Women had a very standard, cliche theme. Are they now "correct" and have people forgotten their past or what? Will they also support Danzig when he`s coming to Europe? Yannis then asked for more Misfits stories. Well, this isn't so much a story but rather an interesting footnote to that post. You mentioned that the band began hitting people with the instruments at some point in the show. This triggered a forgotten memory of mine and might give the bootleg collectors something else to look for. You see, about seven years ago my dad was stationed in Germany and one day this new kid moved to my neighborhood. We both skated and eventually became best friends. I remember talking about our favorite bands and when I mentioned the Misfits, he told me he had a video of them live. We went to his house to watch it and what I saw looked damn similar to the show already described. They come onstage to tons of jeers and boos and before you know it, they start wailing people left and right. The first blow came when some guy came charging toward Glenn. Glenn simply smashed the guy's head with this skull he had on the end of his guitar. That's when all hell broke loose. I recall that portion of the tape to be very short. As this was seven years ago, I don't remember much about the rest of the tape except for the brawl - but I'd say it had about an hour or so of various footage. I wish I would have taped it off of him, but oh well. I MIGHT be able to find him over Christmas break, but I'm not sure. I haven't spoken with him in years. His name is/was Sean Jaehne if anyone wanted to know. So....did all of the video/bootleg collectors out there already know about this or did I provide you with something new? Well, if this is new knowledge, happy hunting! Oh, and please let me know ANYTHING you can dig up on this video. "With a touch of a burning hand..." -Brent P.S. Anybody going through a similar thing? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Dec 1994 17:12:17 +0500 From: tbunt@vt.edu (Tom Bunt) I recently read about an interview with John Christ. It seemed like he was leaning toward the idea that he was unhappy with Glenn. I know that Glenn doesn't like long intricate solos, but it still seemed like Christ felt he wasn't being put to proper use. Do any of you get the same idea about the Danzig/Christ relationship? I could be totally wrong, but I have heard rumors about Christ leaving after this tour, but they are just rumors, so I figure you guys will have the facts. Any word on a summer tour for Danzig? I couldn't go to the Michael's 8th Ave. concert in Glen Burnie, so I want to catch them when they come around during the summer. The greatest Danzig concert that I saw was at University of Maryland at College Park, about 2 years ago. It was right after HTGK came out, so there wasn't any little "Mother" shits at the concert. Were any of you there? It was the best concert I have ever seen, because Glenn was really in tune with the crowd. ------------------------------ From: CrmsnGhost@aol.com Date: Tue, 6 Dec 1994 16:53:27 -0500 Subject: Surf's Up This article appeared in the NY Daily News on 12/6/94 Sorry I couldn't key it in fast enough for the Tuesday issue -CG SURF'S UP by Linda Stasi It's easy enough to follow a rock group, but it isn't easy to get close to members, let alone hand them some papers you'd really like them to see. And it's alot more difficult if those papers are a legal complaint. But through Swiss artist H.R. Giger's attorneys, the group Danzig was handed papers last week by a process server who was actually body-surfed unto the stage at Roseland. We're told a number of process servers were in attendance at the concert with the sole purpose of being body-surfed on stage, but only one - which is all you really need - made it up to hand papers to frontman Glenn Danzig. A spokeswoman for Danzig claims the papers weren't directly handed to him, but were found in the stage's pit. The complaint stems from the artist's contention that the group was allowed to use his artwork for their album "Danzig III, How the Gods Kill" - but not for T-shirts, posters, or anything else. Giger, who won an Oscar for his designs in the movie "Alien," is seeking $3 Million from Danzig and Giant Merchandising. He claims there was copyright infringement, breach of contract and assorted other legal blah, blah, blahs. My point is that if you *wanted* to talk about the others, you're not going to get flamed off because it's within the defined parameters. to sundry: Since I started off the prices discussion, I might as well say what I paid and put a couple more points on the plot: Three Hits From Hell (signed, I think by the Great One): $60 Unholy Passion (first press): $40 plus s+h for both. Walk among Us I'm not telling, because I *know* I got ripped off, but I saw it advertised for $30 (second press). As an aside, the cheapest bootleg I ever saw w/my own eyes was Walk Among the Dead for...I think $7. I saw some others advertised for $4-5, but s+h brought them up a few more. I think they were some of the singles. ------------------------------ From: WL262042@wvnvaxa.wvnet.edu Date: Tue, 06 Dec 1994 15:02:52 -0500 (EST) Subject: How Many More Times... In the last issue, someone (forgive me, I forget exactly who) posted the comparison between the lyrics if "The Hunter" and Zeppelin's "How Many More Times". I have also noticed another "Homage" to the song on D3HTGK check the Bass intro to 'Bodies" and "How many more Tomes." They are nearly identical as well. Also I have a question to anybody. My roomate told me he read an interview where Glenn said he didn't like Zeppelin. Does anybody know how he feels about them? Sean M. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Dec 1994 02:41:38 -0500 (EST) From: GOAT Subject: previous issues Hey! I recently got access to the Misfits Central WWW site and thought I would write about some of the things I read there. First of all, the site is amazing. If any of you have WWW access, definitely check it out. It has some cool stuff on there, including back issues of the bible. I got a cool gif of the Danzig skull from another site and now have it as my wallpaper. It's really cool. I didn't realize how much this list had grown since it started. I am so happy to know I'm not the only fan of Glenn and his various projects. I only know one or two people here at my school who appreciate the music as much as I do. Even they don't seem to like it as much, though. When I saw Danzig last Thursday in Providence, we had an extra ticket and couldn't sell it for the world. Either people don't know who Danzig is or they only know 'Mother' and therefore wouldn't spend the money for the ticket. I guess it's their loss though, because I had an excellent time. I've seen them five times now, which I know isn't many compared to some (like Elizabeth), but I see them as often as time and money will allow. It's too bad more people don't appreciate the genius involved in it all. I remember reading in one of the previous bibles about requests for videos and bootlegs, etc. I have two Danzig boots on CD, an import 12" of "Mother" on purple vinyl, the "Unnatural Causes" boot on 12", a Danzig 7" boot on blue vinyl, "Beware and the Rest" by the Misfits, and the "How the Gods Kill" and "It's Coming Down" uncensored videos, as well as all domestic releases. I know that's not too impressive, but I'm working on improving my collection. Therefore, I would be willing to make copies of any of these for trade or sale (very cheap) for anyone who's interested. I can also get a couple of Misfits 7"s to copy, though I can't remember the names of them right now. If anyone wants these let me know by direct email. Someone also posted a question about Misfits posters in one of the earlier bibles. I have a nice collection of these. Right now I can recall having the Beware, Legacy of Brutality, Who Killed Marilyn, Wolf's Blood, Necros, Misfits Skulls, and Evilive, and I have a few others but can't remember what they are. I also have a wall sized poster of Danzig II, two HTGK posters, a 'Mother' poster, two promo flats of the "Thrall" cover, and various other Danzig posters. I haven't ever run across any Samhain posters or I would have them too. I also have a very cool banner of the Danzig skull, which I made myself. I attempted to order it but was told it was discontinued, so I made my own. Well, can't really think of anything else to say right now. Just want to say again that I think this mailing list is cool shit and I'm glad I'm part of it! Cya all later! Well, this is my first, and unfortunately, my last posting, as I have been informed that I will be graduating in a week (yea!!). As you may guess by the title, I say Danzig last fri (dec 2) in Fitchburg, Mass. In case no body has ever been here, you know how Cape Cod is shaped like a big arm?, well Fitchburg would be the armpit. The show was at the Fitch. Civic Center, a kind of alternative venue to Boston. The only reason that I was going to go was to see Godflesh, the only band that I had not seen. But when I saw the $23.00 ticket price, I decided not to go. Not two days later, my girl (a Fitchburg native!) calls me telling me we just won two tickets on a radio call-in (thanks to Kelly and WFNX!). So great, now I'm going. Hope I don't ruffle too many feathers, but here's my review: (BTW, the Civic Center, which doubles as an ice rink, was not even half way filled. Guess some others didn't like the ticket price either.) Godflesh: Great!! Have always loved this band, and have often kicked myself for not seeing them in small Boston venues. Short set, with stuff from their las two full albums. Type-O Negative: to be honest, I hated this band. Hated 'em from the get-go, when I first saw them opening for Biohazard back in '90. Just slow funeral dirge stuff to me... although I give points to any keyboard player who can 'rock out'! (whoever stated that they did Paranoid at half speed... try more like quarter speed. Man, I almost fell asleep) Danzig: Embarassed to say, but I left half way through! I first saw them touring on the first album(the only one I've liked) in Boston(at Axis), back in '89 or '90, and nothing will compare to that show. I didn't know any of the tunes (I've only bought Danzig I&II), and I got really tired of the pelvic thrusts! As was mentioned in an earlier Bible, the gothic-eroticism thing is real old (at least to me)... Anyway... here are my top whatever: Misfits 1.Teenagers from Mars 2.She -the keyboard version 3.Bullet 4.Horror Hotel 5.Spook City USA 6.Demonmonomania 7.Vampira 8.Mommy... 9.Return of the Fly 10.Queen Wasp!!! I'm sure you know better than that! What about the early 80's with Black Flag? What about the late 70's with S.O.A? I mean Rollins is not some new kid... And then Danzig!?! Punk for the 90's? No way! More like Heavy Metal for the 90's (dont get me wrong, I'm not slagging Danzig off, I'm merely trying to set things straight). And finally, just because Green Day and the Offspring are hot right now, there's much more to punk (active bands) than them : Bad Religion, NOFX, Rancid, Bikini Kill, Fugazi, Wool, All, S.O.I.A, Understand, Leatherface (ok, they broke up), New Bomb Turks, God Bullies... to name a few. --- Finally, did anybody (living in the U.K) catch any of the Undead shows (in England) last year? They played 3 shows opening for the Damned in December of 1979 and then walked off the tour because they werent' getting paid. Later that month while they were still hanging out in England, Glenn got in a fight with a bunch of skinheads and grabbed a piece of broken glass to ward them off. The cops saw some weird-looking american guy waving glass around and dragged him off to jail. This led to the birth of "London Dungeon" which I think of as one of their most unique and haunting tunes. > If anybody got similar stories about the Misfits , share it with the > rest of us. But wait, there he was... out in the crowd pounding the shit out of some poor fan. The guards pulled him off and Glenn jumps back on stage tears off his shirt and necklace and gets into that "Come on man, I'll kick your ass" pose. For the rest of the show, Glenn would add little "You want it, get up here" type comments to songs inviting his new enemy up on the stage for some sort of power battle. The crowd loved it, but I was really disappointed. It was so unnecessary and so silly. This is a 39 year odld man getting in some sort of street fight with one of his fans. Does that make any sense? John Christ and Glenn really haven't gotten along very well throughout the years of Danzig. Glenn really is a control freak, everything has to be done the way he wants it done. I don't complain about this fact because usually, Glenn is right. John is a very good guitar player. Good guitar players get bored playing easy riffs and fills, this is what Glenn has John doing. John's becoming bored and what's to do something challenging. He's realized that right now, Glenn's not giving him any room for creativity, so he's compromised and has worked on different things out side of the band. It was pretty decent. The backdrop this tour was taken from a Simon Bisley HELLRAISER cover-painting (the face stretched out), although they added the runes from 4P. Um, I tried to keep a set list, but I can't remember all of it. I know the show began and ended with BLACK ARIA pieces. Killer Wolf I know they played more, but that's all I can remember. I wish they played "Sadistikal" and "Cantspeak," but you can't win 'em all I guess.... I enjoyed the Danzig portion up until a female friend of mine got her nose shattered by the foot of an idiot crowdsurfer (of which there were many), and she had to go to the hospital. I hope she's OK :(. After the show, Jeremy's gf Karissa got a hospitality pass due to her looks, and Jeremy, Davey and I were waiting outside for her for a WHILE. Well, someone mentioned to us that Glenn was signing shit outside, so we went over. We met Glenn, and Glenn said he hadn't seen Karissa! Jeremy, a nervous wreck as it was, was NONE too reassured by that. Well, it's my turn, and I say "hey" to Glenn, he hands me a signed VErotik poster (for the SATANICA series), and the only thing I ask him is if he knew Eerie Von Bouras....and Glenn just points. I turn around, and there she was! So, that was cool....Karissa came out with a beer she took from the fridge for Jeremy, and his ultra-cool jacket with the UNHOLY PASSION coer painted on it that was SUPPOSED to be signed by Glenn throgh her, but since Glenn was never in teh hospitality lounge....all the same, Jeremy felt vindicated :) Ah well, that's my tale, later all.... --- Geoff We@sel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Dec 1994 17:35:43 -0500 From: kdufresn@vt.edu (child in heat) Subject: bobby steele OK. A lot of you 'Bible' readers have been interested in The Undead. What you are about to read is an interview with Bobby Steele that was conducted in 1992 and published in Maximum Rock & Roll. It is very long but *VERY* informative. I hope that some of you like it because I'd sure hate to think that I typed all of this for nothing. OK, here goes (sorry for any typos): Interviewers Note: The following interview is the result of what was originally intended as a full length biographical paper on the long defunct MISFITS. As my research dragged on, the number of interested participants and/or information sources dropped to one...Bobby Steele, the first person I contacted when I needed information. Since I couldn't see the point in carrying out my original plan, I asked Bobby if he would do an interview for MRR. The entire interview was conducted through the mail, so there may be a few spots where it seems like I change subjects more often than I change my socks...sorry. Anyway, as regular readers of Mykel Board's column should already know, Bobby is currently the only member of his band, THE UNDEAD, so the interview is one-on-one. Interview by Geoffrey Tilander. MRR: How did you get involved with THE MISFITS? Bobby: I ran an ad in a local paper. Glenn (Danzig) called and set up an audition. I'd only heard of THE MISFITS once before. At an earlier gig, I met a kid who told me about this band that he knew. That was around 1977. I think. the funny part is: I met that kid again in '82. That was how I met Steve Zing (exMOURNING NOISE, exSAMHAIN). MRR: Were you already into the horror thing before you joined? Bobby: Oh, yeah! I was a horror junkie. I just wasn't into all the trivia shit that most of the 'horror snobs' are into. I don't know shit about who did this or that. I just love to watch them. My parents turned me on to that stuff when I was real young. I think the first horror movie I ever saw was Lady In a Cage. Nobody ever heard of it, and for the longest time I thought I'd just imagined it. They showed it on TV once in '84. I have it on tape now. It's kind of like a Hitchcock type film. There's no monster. It's really sick...especially for it's time. MRR: What was the first thing you did-either live or in the studio with THE MISFITS? Bobby: The very first song I ever played with them on stage was 'Static Age'. MRR: What was your impression of them as a band or as individuals? Bobby: It was the most intense band I'd ever heard. And they looked cool, too! I literally went out the very next day and told all my friends that it was gonna be the biggest thing since KISS. I knew if any band could do it, THE MISFITS could. It was exactly the type of band I'd been dreaming of for years. Jerry Only seemed like a nice guy, at the time. I quickly learned that he was a phony. Glenn was strange. At first, I thought he was gay. There were lots of rumors to that extent back then. The one thing about Glenn was that he was real. If he didn't like you, he made it clear. Glenn was very professional. In the beginning, he had things under control. Every week we'd practice three nights. After practice, we'd do pictures. We must've shot three rolls each night...three nights a week. As we got more popular, he lost control. I guess that's why it all died. MRR: Glenn Danzig claims that you didn't play on the Bullet EP, yet on Beware The Misfits, you are creditied for the same versions found on Bullet. What's the story on that? Bobby: Glenn's wrath. He was pissed at Franche Coma, so he refused to give him credit on the record. He has a tendency towards doing that...if ya know what I mean. MRR: So is that pretty much the same thing that happened on the 3 Hits from Hell EP? Bobby: I don't really know. He kinda did a different twist on that one and gave me credit for "xtra guitar on 'London Dungeon'", which is one of the reaons that I really think he really didn't want to get rid of me, himself. MRR: So what all did you play on? I'm sure a lot of people know, but there are probably just as many who don't. Bobby: Fuck...the sixty-four thousand dollar question. I've gotten so tired of having to dig into my memory to remember all the stuff I played on. The first thing was Horror business. Then we did Night of the Living Dead. At each of these sessions, we recorded enough tracks to make an LP, but used only the best tracks for the EPs. The next sessions were for an LP that eventually became Walk Among Us. What they wound up as were the Halloween and 3 Hits from Hell 45s. On the 20 song LP, The Misfits, I played on "Horror Business", "Teenagers From Mars", "Night of the Living Dead", "Vampira", "I Turned Into a Martian", "Skulls", "London Dungeon", "Ghoul's Night Out", and "Astro Zombies". Some of these tracks were from the 45s, while others were from the original Walk Among Us sessions. I think the material from the original Walk Among Us were, by far, the best recordings we ever did. that was the tightest lineup we ever had. that was with Arthur Googy on drums. It was the first time that we worked with a real producer. He never got the credit, but his name was Robbie Alter. He played guitar in the IAN HUNTER BAND. He was the one who was responsible for all the great sounds on "London Dungeon". He played a lot of the subtle feedback on that one. He also came up with the accents on the chorus. MRR: Your last show with THE MISFITS was in July '79, right? What was that show like? Bobby: The last show was July '79, at Exile in Long Island City, NY. We were always trying to come up with ways of making the show more intense. this time, we decided to lock ourselves in the dressing room for the last hour before going on. The isolation... along with the fact that we hated each other...was intended to inspire us to play as aggressively as possible. The club's manager kept coming back and telling us to wait another hour, unit we were in there for about four hours. We started busting up the dressing room. We were climbing the walls. When we finally went on; it was like all hell breaks loose. I'll bet it was the loudest, fastest set we ever did. I have a tape of that show, somewhere. the sound is awful, but you can hear how fast we were. At the end of the night, the owners didn't want to pay us at first. The club's booking agent warned the owners not to fuck with us, or they'd regret it. We got paid in full. And these guys were Mafia! We had a reputation. MRR: They (THE MISFITS) claimed in an interview that you were replaced because you "couldn't play fast enough", Arthur Googy said that you were never around come time for rehearsal and Glenn said you didn't show up for the completion of the 3 Hits from Hell EP. Would you like a chance to clear that up for us? Bobby: If any of that were true...do you think I'd be where I am now, despite their slander campaign? I've alway been a hard worker. That's why nobody can last with me. Nobody's got the stamina and determination that it takes to overcome the setbacks that I've been hit with in my life. Believe me, it'd be a lot easier for me to kill myself. But then I might miss out on an opportunity. I was always on Glenn's case for his procrastination. MRR: Not many people know that Jerry and Doyle are brothers. How much do you think that had to do with his replacing you? Obviously it had something to do with his being inducted as a member. I've seen some of the live videos that are floating around out there...his playing skills, or lack thereof, are more than a little less than equal to yours. Bobby: That was the only reason he got in. I think Jerry wanted to control the band, and the best way to do it was to have a majority on his side. Doyle was perfect. He'd always agree with anything Jerry said. Jerry used to tell me that practice was off. So I wouldn't show up. I never knew that there was a practice. I used to wait all day trying to find out if we were gonna practice. You can't imagine how dedicated I was to that band. MRR: I've heard recordings of both the Ritz, NYC and Hittsville, Passaic, NJ shows from late '81 where those guys cut loose on you (by changing the lyrics to 'Teenagers From Mars' so they said, "Bobby Steele's an asshole", etc.). How provoked were those attacks? Bobby: Sounds magazine, from England, did an article about THE UNDEAD in October '81. It said that I'd accomplished more in six months than THE MISFITS had in seven years. That's when the shit hit the fan. Up until then, things had been fairly civil, though they had been telling people I couldn't play, etc..... MRR: So, as far as they were concerned, it was cool until THE UNDEAD started to get off the ground. Bobby: Definitely. They had put their feet in their mouths and it was a blow to their egos. MRR: Glenn claimed that the infamous "San Francisco Show" (where Doyle smashed his guitar over some kid's head) was a result of the work of "Bobby Steele's cronies". What do you think of that. Bobby: It's as if I had the kind of money that it would take to send a bunch of thugs out to fuck with them. At that time, I was living on $240 a month and my rent was $135. Of course he was lying. I couldn't find a lawyer to handle a lawsuit against him and Thrasher for slander. He was accusing me of committing a series of felony crimes; crossing state lines for the purpose of committing a crime. MRR: At the time of those shows, how long had THE UNDEAD been together? Was that before Nine Toes Later came out? Bobby: If you're talking about the aforementioned show, I think it was less than a year. I really don't know, 'cause I don't know when that happened. MRR: That EP was supposed to come out on Plan 9, right? Bobby: Originally, yeah. Glenn was at a couple of the sessions, too. He laid out the initial $300 for the session. When I think back to that we were still friends at that point. That's one of the reasons why I think Jerry had a lot more to do with kicking me out than they ever admitted. MRR: When did you start Post Mortem Records? Was it spawned because of record companies refusing to deal with you due to the bad press you received at the hands of Danzig and his pals? Bobby: I started Post Mortem after Stiff Records went belly-up. There was still a huge demand for Nine Toes Later, and I was hoping to take advantage of it by putting the record out myself. I wound up getting fucked by all the distributors on all the 45s that came out on Post Mortem. I can't really say why the labels keep avoiding me like the plague, but you gotta admit there's something sleazy going on. Act Your Rage, with virtually no distribution, has sold nearly twenty-thousand copies, and I still can't get the interest of a label that'll do any kind of promotion. I've been told, and I've denied it to myself for too long, that the only reason that I'm being ignored by the industry is because I'm crippled and they don't believe that a cripple is capable of entertaining. This industry is so righteous about not being racist, when they won't think twice about excluding a person just because he walks funny. Even MRR, in all its talk about equal rights always mentions blacks and women, but rarely ever mentions the handicapped. It's something that people aren't eve aware that they're doing. I only blame it partially on THE MISFITS. After all, they were the only ones in this whole business that ever gave me a chance. A lot of people like to criticize them fro being so evil, but it was the only band that ever put a cripple in the spotlight. Most people don't know this, but THE ROLLING STONES had a keyboard player from the very beginning, Ian McLagen, I think was his name. He was never allowed to pose in pictures or be seen on stage. He was a cripple. I don't care what you might think about PC, they're full of it. It's a trendy movement. They care more about forcing their doctrines down our throats than they care about our rights. You'd be hard pressed to find one of them that's ever attended a handicapped demonstration. It's not cool. PETA's cool. Protesting racism is cool. Women's casues are cool. But fuck the cripples. There's this club in Detroit, 404 Willis, they've refused to book me because I'm not politically correct. What's not politically correct? That I'm a cripple? That I wrote the first song abut the homeless problem in 1983? that there have been three females in the band at various times? They don't know what they're talking about. What's not politically correct is to deny work to a cripple who has a reputation for being honest and sincere in his work. If the PC had their way, they'd eliminate the constitution faster than you could say, "George Bush". MRR: You don't think THE MISFITS and their associates had much to do with your being blacklisted by almost the entire underground music scene, then? Bobby: They weren't the only ones. They got things against me, but everybody involved is equally guilty in my opinion. Chris Williamson, who's one of the owners of Rock Hotel, had a big part in it. He manipulated the scene, through his control of the CROMAGS. A lot of people don't like my independence. They don't like a guy who breaks the rules and comes out on top. Honestly, I don't give a fuck. At least when I die I'll still have my integrity. MRR: Some of the earlier UNDEAD songs sound a little like older MISFITS songs. Was Glenn much of an influence on you as a songwriter? Bobby: Certainly. MRR: What do you think of Danzig as a person and as a musician? What about SAMHAIN and his latest band, DANZIG? Bobby: I think he gets too much criticism for the wrong reasons, mostly from people that are jealous. He's one of the most intelligent clever lyricists in the business. His lyrics make you think about the hypocrisy in religion these days. MRR: You don't consider him a sellout for turning his back on the punk scene in favor of the glitter and gold of heavy metal? I know that's why a lot of people give him so much crap. Bobby: The thing about the punk scene nowadays is that they treat musicians like shit. We're the niggers of the scene. We're expected to work our fingers to the bone; entertain and bring pleasure, but we're never allowed to profit from it. If we do, we're 'capitalist pigs'. We have a right to earn a living. The punk scene turns its back on us first, and theny they bitch when we change. If his heart's in it, he's not a sellout. I'm not gonna judge him on that. Then again, I know of some hard-core anarchist punk from years ago, who's making $35,000.00 a week as an investment broker. I don't hear anyone bitching about him. Face it, most punks sell out by the time they're 25, so I advise them to stop criticizing other people. Punk rockers are all sellouts. Selling out is a matter of compromising yourself in order to gain popularity and make money. That could be countless hundreds of bands who went for the generic speed thrash "Fuck Reagan" trend of a decade ago. MRR: It's kind of funny, if you know Glenn's influences and his idols and look at some of his recent stuff, you can see where he just flat out ripped off artwork, music, lyrics, etc., yet he still pisses and moans about people ripping him off! Bobby: Yeah, I know what you mean there. He does put his foot in his mouth a lot. MRR: In the kit you get from his fan club they bitch about the problem of MISFITS bootlegs and are bold enought to say that they receive no money for bootleg merchandise and ask, "Who deserves it, the band or the bootleggers?". Don't you think that question is a little misleading, seeing how the only person in THE MISFITS that ever got anything for their work was Danzig and everyone else got fucked? Bobby: Yeah. It is. A lot of people don't realize this, but I've never gotten anything out of being in THE MISFITS. Go ahead, buy the bootlegs. At least then I'm not the only one getting fucked. It's his own fault anyway. If he didn't want the bootlegs, he could just release the shit himself. What bothers me is that some of the bootlegs I've heard don't have the pressing defects that the originals had. Which means that whoever put them out had access to tapes that only Glenn and Jerry had access to. MRR: That's pretty weird...somebody told me once that Glenn Danzig actually did some MISFITS bootlegs himself. I thought it was a joke, but you're right...some of the bootlegs I have are actually better in sound qualtiy than some of my originals. Bobby: My intuition is almost always on the mark. I just got to hear the Horror Business and Bullet bootlegs, and they're right on the mark...right down to the inscriptions on the inner groove. MRR: What about Jerry and Doyle, have you heard their new band yet, KRYST THE CONQUEROR? Bobby: Hated it... MRR: It looks like they're tryng to cash in on the success DANZIG is having. The tape has a big metal sound to it. Bobby: It's like IRON MAIDEN meets GWAR, with JIMMY SWAGGART writing lyrics. They're about as born agian as Anton LaVey. MRR: How are the Slave to Fashion EP and Live Slayer LPs doing? Bobby: Not bad at all. Slave to Fashion is a limited edition UK release. I only got 100 copies to sell in the US, and I know of only one other distributor who brought in another 100 copies, so that might be all that's available here. Live Slayer has sold over 5,000 copies so far. MRR: Is the title of Live Slayer a play on SLAYER's Live Undead album or just a coincidence. Bobby: Certainly. It was a coincidence that it came out the same week as SLAYER's new live LP, though. Some stores actually wound up putting it in the SLAYER section by accident. Fuck 'em. I've been getting a good response on it. MRR: What's this I hear about a new 7" coming soon? Any details about it you'd like to share? Bobby: It's called The Invisible Man. It's about how people turn a cold shoulder on other people who don't have it so good. I think everyone can relate to having been in a city, and walking past a homeless person, a bum, or a cripple. For some reason...that you just can't explain...you just totally ignore them, even if they try to get your attention. Imagine how that must feel. It's like you're invisible. MRR: Who's putting that out? Bobby: No. Who's on first. Oh, you mean what label? In the US it'll be on Skyclad. I'm trying to negotiate a release in Europe, and I'm looking for a label other than Shagpile/Shock to release it in Australia. I'm not happy with the way they handled Dawn Of The Undead. I still don't have any of the LPs from them. MRR: What are your live shows like? I know you don't have a backup band. How do you play, do you have a tape of drums and bass or what? Bobby: I'm still getting used to doing this. I don't use tapes. They don't sound good enough. I have everthing sequenced, and it plays on a drum machine and sampler. It sounds just like it would sound if I had a band up there. The only problem that I have is that all eyes are on me. I have to carry the whole show. It's like those dreams where you go to school, and you realize that you forgot to put your pants on. Hopefully I'll be able to find a band, but for now this is great. I don't have people holding me back. When I had a band, I put out records every couple of years. I've had four releases in five months without the band. I haven't changed my sound at all. MRR: So are you planning to get actual members, or are you officially a one-man-band? Bobby: I hope to find a band, eventually, but I'm not gonna settle for second best. I get a lot of people offering to play with me, but I can tell in an instant that they're not into it. They're just whores-they'll play anything. I need true punks. They have to have the right look; kind of Saturday morning cartoon/Road Warrior look. They have to be nonsmokers. And they have to sing lead and harmonies. They have to be easy to get along with, and they have to show that they have the drive. Most people blow it in the first minute by showing up drunk (I hate drunks), or by saying shit like, "We'll party, dude". This ain't no fucking party. This is the hardest working most despised band in the world. You gotta be a real trooper to make it in this band. THE FEW, THE PROUD, THE UNDEAD! WE'RE LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD MEN (OR WOMEN). MRR: Do you have any plans to tour soon? Bobby: By the time this comes out, I'll be on a two-to-three month tour, if anybody reading this is interested in setting up a show, call me at (201) 262-7558. MRR: Anything you'd like to add in closing? Bobby: Yeah. I get a decent number of threats. In the mail and on the phone. A lot of it has to do with allegations made against me by a band that I did a lot for. People are so fucking eager to believe anything negative about me just because I'm so different. It's funny. City Gardens, in Trenton, NJ, has refused to give me a gig. I think THE UNDEAD is the only band of its stature that hasn't played there. Anyway that band, for years, was telling Randy that we were great and should get a gig. He wouldn't believe them. But as soon as they told him some bad shit, he was repeating it to whoever would listen to him. I'd like for bands, especially the bigger bands such as FUGAZI and BAD RELIGION, to get in touch with me. It's time they started boycotting clubs that discriminate. I'd like to hear from other people, too. I want to know how you feel about what I'm exposing for the first time. I can be reached at: Post Mortem Records PO Box 358 New Milford, NJ 07646 Please don't ask for free shit. I can barely keep afloat right now. As soon as I can afford to, I'll have goodies to give out. That was one of the things about being in THE MISFITS. We always had cool shit to give away. Anyone wishing to correspond with a die-hard MISFITS/UNDEAD fiend can write to me, Geoffrey Tilander, at: PO Box 1380 Ukiah, CA 95482 I hope that you had as much fun reading this interview as I had conducting it. It was a lot of work and took almost six months to complete...I hope it was worth it. I think that it was worth it. For the longest time I've always heard Bobby's name used negatively, in this article he was able to tell his side of the story. The thing that I liked most about this article was the fact that Bobby doesn't hold that big of a grudge against The Misfits, and that he doesn't blame Glenn for what happened in the band. I don't if I believe the fact that Jerry had Bobby kicked out or not but it seems very feasible, seeing as Bobby was a much better guitar player than Doyle. Oh well, what'd you think? Was it worth me spending two hours to type? E-Mail me at: kdufresn@vt.edu, or let me know in the next 'Bible'. -child in heat- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Dec 1994 18:21:08 -0400 (CDT) From: stephen alan sisson Subject: Johnny Christo, Boots, Backmaskin' About the Christ-Danzig relationship... I have taken a listen to the Danzig demos prior to the first album's release and have concluded that Christ probably brought in a lotta riffs that Glenn probably wouldn't credit him for. Specifically, there's a little Glenny-solo synth-keyboard version of Twist of Cain that simply lacks that trademark riff which it begins with, but when the band is together, there Jon is wailing it off. Now it is entirely possible that Glenn came up with the riffs and just showed them to Jon... most of these were OBVIOUSLY works in progress. But I think it's ironic that one of Glenn's biggest complaints about whatever band he used to be in was that the guitarist just couldn't play the complicated kind of stuff Glenn wanted. Now he's got the kind of guy who CAN play that way, but Glenn is pissing the guy off with his control- freakishness. Also I think it's kinda funny that way back in the Al's Bar [Misfits] boot Glenn says "Fuck mistakes.. if you want that kinda shit go see a cock rock band" and, in my opinion, many of Jon's solos in Danzig are very much like the kind of stuff you would get with a "cock rock band." Speaking of boots and prices... hmm, I don't think I've ever paid more than $20 for any one bootleg, and if they're that expensive they better damn well be 12"ers. The cheapest boot I ever bought was my Cough/Cool imitation 7"... I later looked at my receipt from when I bought it [along with some other records] and discovered that the clerk's handwriting was so sloppy that even he had mismatched the titles with the prices and forgotten to charge me for it! As for the backmasking in How The Gods Kill (title track), I believe it's right after Glenn speaks something and right as the music heads into the bridge. If you listen closely you can hear some words or something backmasked there. I've never gone back and tried to listen to that backwards, although I now have the technology to at home (lil' 4-track recorder). If I remember when I go back over the winter I'll try to listen to it and maybe decipher it. Teevie >;0) ------------------------------ From: She Subject: my response to last issue.... This is in response to the posts about Glenn fighting with the audience. Does anyone know why he was fighting? As no one seems to know, I think it would be best to hold off judgement until they do know, or otherwise they need to reserve judgement permanently. Perhaps the "fan" was throwing ice or some other such thing that "fans" do to show their loyalty to a band. :( Wow, what a way to make an impression, wish I was that original. At any rate, it is highly improbable that he would just jump off the stage for the fun of beating somebody up. I think people don't really realize how irritating it can be for someone to throw ice or do some such thing when they are trying to perform. It's like a form of rejection almost; you're trying to give the audience a little piece of your soul, and some dumbass just doesn't get it. It leads to very strong emotional response, and if emotions are heightened to a performance level already, then they are dangerously near the surface in the first place. Please understand that Glenn is only human; he had the same emotions that we do. Alas, as I suspected, it was some jerk throwing something at the stage. I'm sure that doesn't change the many minds who are thinking that Glenn is too old to be jumping into the crowd to reek revenge upon deserving souls. I have nothing to say to this, except that if you are to old to emote, then perhaps you are too old to rock. And how many believe this of Glenn? Not many, I would venture to guess. Let's not be so quick to judge. Thanks, Bell ------------------------------ From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" Subject: Danzig article in the VILLAGE VOICE Date: Fri, 09 Dec 94 12:07:00 est Thought you might enjoy this article that appeared in the November 29th 1994 edition of the VILLAGE VOICE - Glenn himself is quite pleased with this article as he thinks Frank Owen is one of the few writers to understand what he's doing. O SUPERMAN Danzig's Dark Spirituality By Frank Owen We live in a disenchanted, cynical society embarrassed by overt displays of intense religiosity and unable to account for why, at the end of the century, there is such a resurgence of interest in things supernatural and unseen. One consequence of this is that too much attention has been paid to the politics of popular culture (where quasireligion lurks in disguised form, whether in horror movies or house music, horoscopes or heavy metal), and not enough to its spiritual dimension: for instance, we know too much about the meaning of rock and not enough about its magic. We rarely explore the transubstantiation that occurs during the heat of rock performance, or the shortcuts to transcendence rock music provides. Take Danzig, the bluesy, malevolent hard rock band, often caricatured by critics as cartoonish satanists. To the sociologically minded, a Danzig show may seem like another example of the standard heavy metal gambit of selling male fantasies to the powerless. But to the spiritually minded, a Danzig performance is a textbook exercise in practical magic. There's the unruly crowd, the wretched of the suburbs, barbarians even by punk and heavy metal standards, who flock to Danzig's shows and whose bodily exertion reaches such a fever pitch that they threaten to step beyond physicality altogether. There's the band itself (John Christ on guitar, Eerie Von on bass, Joey Castillo on drums), providing the pumping atmospheric music that magnifies awe, creates energy, and dissolves both separateness and the restraining influence of Judeo-Christian morality. And then there's barrel-chested frontman Glenn Danzig, a cult hero for years now, from the seminal punk outfit the Misfits to the dark art rock of Samhain to his current incarnation. His physique, as wide as it is tall, is monstrous - deliberately so. It's the living embodiment of the half-man/half-beast ideal he aspires to. ("Just imagine an animal with a brain," he says.) Crooning into the mike, his muscles bulging and his tattooed torso glistening in the spotlight, he's one of the most powerful and mesmerizing rock and roll performers around, a living reminder of what Camille Paglia has identified as the religious root of charismatic starpower in pre-Christian glamour. The man himself concurs. "Going to one of our shows is definitely closer to a pagan ritual than it is to a rock concerts," he says. Think of Glenn Danzig not as a satanist, but as a religious free-thinker, someone turned off by Christian hypocrisy who many years ago embarked on a journey of discovery that led to research in forbidden knowledge and hidden histories. Celtic folklore, conspiracy theories, freemasonry, lycanthrophy, serial killers, sadomasochism, white magic, and black magic are among his esoteric fascinations. Glenn Danzig's first experience of unthinking religious dogmatism came during his early years in the nondescript working-class town of Lodi, New Jersey, when his Sunday school teacher told the nascent punk-pagan about the Christian myth of creation. The obvious question that strikes many a smart kid when he or she first hears this argument immediately popped into young Glenn's mind: "So if God created the universe, who created God?" he asked. To which the bemused but kindly Protestant pastor replied, "You don't ask questions like that because there are no answers to them." "I was basically told there are no explanations and you just have to assume that God always was," says the 35-year old singer. "But I wanted answers. You're supposed to follow blindly, and that's not me. I'm not a follower. Neither was Nietzsche, who called Christianity the religion of slaves, the weak ganging up on the strong, using the weapons of conscience and morality. Danzig goes one step further, suggesting that all mainstream religions are slave ideologies: "Organized religions like Christianity, Judaism, and Islam aren't about empowering people, they're about taking power away from people. Satanism, on the other hand, give you power. It gives you strength." Mentioning the universal scapegoat Satan is Danzig's way of testing the limits of religious freedom and liberal tolerance. On Danzig 4 (American), he continues to push that edge. This record comes after the breakthrough success of "Mother", the hit single from the Demonsweatlive EP. But Danzig has made few concessions to pop values. The songs are replete with images of horny demons, sadomasochists, and wild-eyed stalkers. And the murky music still sounds like it was recorded in some dark cave. Danzig croons like Elvis's evil twin (when's that Presley cover album coming?) and the guitars echo with otherworldly vibrations. The lyrics continue to antagonize Christianity's white-light magicians, with songs like "Brand New God," about creating a new deity and getting people to worship it, and "Bringer of Death": " See the Devil bite the hand of Christ/And know the Devil is the work of God." "I get accused of being a Satanist, which is rubbish," insists Danzig. "But what about real satanists? Are they free to practice their religion? Because regardless of what people say, it's not about cutting the heads off goats and little children." Danzig the devil-worshipper represents one of those convenient myths, like hidden messages on heavy metal records and recovered memories of Satanic ritual abuse, that mask deep anxiety. Why does mainstream society need to exaggerate the power and influence of satanism, which after all remains a very small sect? "It's a registration drive," says Danzig. "They need something to point to to make themselves look better because they know their own worldview doesn't make sense anymore." Made to live within the limits of reason, mainstream religion can no longer supply the sort of powerful sacramental experience people crave. The fact that a heavy metal band can provide what the church once offered poses a threat to religious orthodoxy. Other than the gravitational pull of the end of the year 2000, why is there such an interest in resurrecting religious beliefs that were thought to have been driven underground centuries ago? "The world is about ready to move into a new era," offers Danzig. "but you need to know where you've been before you can go further. The knowledge we have is not sufficient to go forward. We need answers. And that means discarding the bullshit and trying to find out the real origins of the world. "That's what Minister Farrakhan is trying to do. He's trying to find out the real history of his people. That's fantastic. It's the white devil bullshit I disagree with." To a member of the Nation of Islam, Glenn Danzig must look like the embodiment of the veil white devils, the cursed seed of Yacub their leaders rail against. Indeed, it's common to find in black Muslim tracts pictures of longhaired rockers as illustrations of the devilish appearance of the white man. While Danzig, who recently recorded a song called "White Devil Razz," has little time for rank-and-file Muslims ("A Five Percenter to me is the exact equivalent of a KKK guy. And inbred guy with half a brain who doesn't know shit.") he praises Farrakhan. "Reverend Farrakhan has a brilliant mind and anyone who discredits him is only doing disservice to themselves," he concludes. (Glenn appreciates extremists; he expresses similar admiration for Hitler's intelligence, though not his deeds.) Like the Nation of Islam or any outside religion, Danzig's following grows stronger the more it's attacked. Occasionally celebrated but mostly ridiculed by the rock critic establishment, Danzig remains beyond the pale. Yet to the fans who flock around the tour bus after every concert, thanking Glenn for giving meaning and dignity to their lives, Danzig is more a self-help group than a satanic coven. This form of pop religion replaces the discipline of the esoteric arts with the easy-to-grasp intensity of rock and roll. "People come up to the bus every night, thanking me for helping them to get on the right path," he says. Their devotion, he admits, makes up for all the persecution. On that tour Glenn & Bobby went to see The Jam at The Rainbow Room, it was there that a bunch of skinheads started up. Bobby took off leaving Glenn to fend by himself. Glenn grabbed a peice of glass from a broken window and was consequently busted by a constable. He was put in jail for the British version of disturbing the peace, this BTW *was* what inspired "London Dungeon" It was more than likely incidents like this between Glenn & Bobby that caused Glenn's dislike for him. Date: Mon, 12 Dec 94 15:19:00 est Hullo again... Sorry 'bout missing a few MBibles but been out road tripping again seeing the Danzig tour! Now I'm back for a week before I head out to Oregon & Washington for the last two shows... (And for those who have asked how I can afford this - no, I am NOT rich - I'm just a total workaholic who works two jobs & saves up my $$ for this! It's all a matter of priorities!) Let's see... think I already described a few.... Also caught the Philadelphia show 12/3 at the Tower Theater & got to finally meet MBible co-ordinator Mark Kennedy briefly in line (until the doors opened as my friends and I wanted to get spots in the front of the stage which we managed - and luckily the Philly crowd was no where near as violent at the ones in NYC) During the 3rd song somebody reached out & grabbed Glenn's pendant & ripped it off his neck - in doing so they also trashed his latex shirt which ripped down the front & he was in a pissed off mood throughout that show since he seriously wanted some revenge on the idiot. (Glenn's got a very quick temper). Backstage after the show I told him how sorry I was about his shirt getting ruined & he said "oh yeah....here, you might as well take it" and handed it to me as a souvenir! (Luckily he had a spare for the rest of the tour) The next show was 12/5 in Detroit at the State Theater -after a hellish 500 mile drive in which we ran into Godflesh's road crew at every single rest area we stopped at! The State is- a GORGEOUS restored movie palace and a great place to see a show as it offers a lot of great places to stand at different levels. The crowd was really active that night, especially when a couple of strippers came onstage during "She Rides" & did their little number to the song much to the appreciation of the males in the audience. Glenn was pretty amused while John stepped back & gave them a horrified "don't get near me look" - poor John, he comes from such a nice family, I bet he spends a lot of time wondering how he got mixed up with this lot! Hung out afterwards & got to watch Glenn do a great job of scaring off bimbos hitting on him; one commented on how sloppy his handwriting was after he signed her ticket & said "you should be a doctor...wanna play doctor?" to which he responded with "I like to play SURGERY!" and pulled out a pocket knife that he flicked open & swung up & embedded into the wall behind him. She fled while the bunch of us laughed our butts off! Then he posed for some pix for a photographer from Thrasher mag who gave him a skateboard to pose with & Glenn teased him because every time the photographer went to take a shot he'd slip the "Pinky and the Brain" video a fan had given him in front of the deck. "No!!! We can't use those shots....we don't have the license for that!!" "Tough!" The next night they played in Indianapolis in a barn at the Indiana State Fairgrounds - not a great place but the performance was one of the best I've seen on this tour! (No strange incidents either) Afterwards I got to meet Geoff Weasel hanging out by the bus (hi Geoff!!) & when Glenn was done signing autographs he invited me & Judy (my room mate & fellow road warrior) on the bus to show off his proof copy of VEROTIKA #1 that had just been Fed-Ex'd in. So I got to sit & read the whole thing with him hanging over my shoulder commenting on it all. And even though he pointed out every printing and coloring error he's unhappy with (and no it's NOT supposed to have a glossy coated cover like that!) I could still tell he's proud of his new baby. Looks great (aside from the minor errors) & has 2 stories in it and a great painted cover by Simon Bisley. The first, "Obscenity" is written by Glenn & illustrated by Bisley (which is really the origin story for his demoness Satanika who will have her own book out shortly, written by Glenn & drawn by Doug Mighten). The second piece is a comics adaptation of the short story "The Braille Encyclopedia" by Grant Morrison (writer for "Arkham Asylum", "Animal Man", "Doom Patrol", "The Invisibles" etc) which had originally appeared in the horror anthology "Hotter Blood". Its illustrated by Ted Naifeh. Its a very intense story much like those in Clive Barker's "Books of Blood" series; they held NOTHING back in illustrating it - Glenn was only too happy to point out the panel he thought was particularly the reason the first printer rejected it. There's also two cool illustrations in there by Craig Hamilton that I was inordinately proud to see used as I own both original pieces! Glenn was also only too happy to tell me about what will be coming up in further issues (it will be bi-monthly) - they'll be running adaptations several more short stories including Nancy Collin's "Demon Lover" (illustrated by Esteban Moroto), Rex Miller's "Box 69" and another Grant Morrison piece, "the Room where Love Lives". Bisley will be doing the Verotika covers except for #3 which will be by Frank Frazetta. Meanwhile Bisley will be drawing two series based on Frazetta characters - the first will be "the Death Dealer" based on Frazetta's most famous painting; the second will be "Jaguar God" which is base on South American mythology. Frazetta will be doing the covers to these. Also forthcoming is a mini series called GOTH which stands for Government Operative Total Hate which is about a super secret defense experiment gone way wrong. (Good thing I don't mind spoilers - he was only too happy to rattle off entire plots!) Also got to finally meet Joey C. who's a really nice guy!! Unfortunately haven't seen much of EV who seems to be hiding whenever he's offstage.... Had to go home to do some actual work (ack!) but will get to catch the last two shows on the tour next Sunday & Monday in Salem, OR & Seattle, WA - looking forward to it! (Now just gotta finish sculpting Glenn's Christmas present....) Comments on the last few: #36 - Stephen Sisson - the original "Beware" 12" DOES have the "swirly deranged photo" as you described it. The counterfit of it is nearly identical except that since the cover was shot from a copy of the record & not from the original artwork, the screening of the photo is off being a screen of a screen (you have to look CLOSELY... I only thought to look since I used to study offset printing) plus the printing on the spine is slightly off kilter. The one with the skull & candle from the comic book is most definitely a boot. Like I said, if anybody has any questions about if anything is real or not, PLEASE ask me! I've got all the original releases to compare them to (and most of the boots) & I've authenticated stuff for other collectors & stores. BIG THANKS to whoever posted the AOL transcript - MUCH appreciated!!! I'd heard this would happen but had no way to obtain it from the source #37 - WL262042 - out of curiosity, did you have a white shirt with the Danzig skull on it in black with red over it?? If so I saw ya hanging near the bus before the show! NIKOLOPOULOS - I can add another funny incident to the story about the Misfits going over to England to play with the band. Bobby Steele told me that since they didn't have visas to work over there, they all dressed up like little preppies in order to pass through Customs when they arrived in the UK, saying that they were on college break for a week. The problem is that while Bobby, Jerry and Glenn were getting their story straight, Joey Image was in the bathroom getting high and so when the customs officer asked Joey what the purpose of his visit was he went off about what a huge tour they'd be playing and the other 3 had to quickly jump in and pretend Joey was joking. I get really amused trying to picture the 4 of them dressed like little preppies... Brent Eyestone - Yup, Oct 4th at the Whisky WAS Joey Castillo's first concert with Danzig - I suspect it was arranged so he could "warm up" in front of a smaller crowd before playing at Irvine Meadows on Halloween. And yes, the confrontation between O'Barr and Glenn is why they weren't on the Crow soundtrack - they were one of the first bands contacted but Glenn turned 'em down flat because of his feud with O'Barr. (He also turned down Hellraiser III because it sucked & Natural Born Killers) She - RE: Philly show. What kind of fan rips something off a performer? Some assholes go to shows just to bait Glenn 'cause they know he's got a short temper. Some idiots WANT him to beat them up. Go fig. Anyway, great to finally get a chance to meet you there!!! Congrads on getting the photo signed - that's killer! OK OK - sorry the dates didn't get to the MBible... sheesh, I screwed up trying to post it to both right before I had to leave work & one bounced ('cause Liz is a sloppy typist and sometimes puts a wrong letter in...) #38 - Tom Bunt - From what I've noticed lately hanging out with 'em, John and Glenn seem to be getting along better than ever. Actually the whole band seems a lot happier on the road, probably without Chuck to worry about. (I guess they no longer have to worry about getting thrown out of another hotel room in the middle of the night because he's freaked out again....) As for summer tour - it'll probably before that. They are aiming to go back on the road in early Spring of '95 - they won't play the same cities they did this round but rather the ones in between. (Hey, I was at that show you were at at the Univ of Md College Park - good ol' Ritchie Col - saw 'em there in 1990 and 1992!) CrmsnGhost - hmm, I didn't seen anybody surf up any papers on stage.... unless it happened at the end of the 2nd Roseland show after I got knocked out.... Child in heat - STILL no word on the Samhain boxed set... I'll try and remember to ask again... It seems like it's standard procedue for any article on the misfits to have some bizarre error like that... I was glad to see that Glenn had at least some sort of reason to jump in the crowd. Personally, I do think he's too old to be doing stuff like that, but at the same time I realize that some fans are stupid. Other performers have handled stuff like that a little more reasonably - like saying they won't play more songs if shit like that continues. but whatever. i have to wonder about fans who pay $20 or more and then just go and start trouble. Yannis, if you can, put that Die Die gif in the ftp directory. I put all the gif files in there and am trying to figure out what else to put in there. i don't know how much i can put in there before the school starts deleting stuff. if anyone has a better place for an ftp site, one that definitely won't cause any trouble, let me know and i can put the stuff there... mark . ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Dec 1994 17:23:09 -0600 (CST) From: Brent Eyestone Subject: fighting, questions, and comments Hello Fiends, I just glanced through the last issue (FINALS.....), and I thought it was the best one I've read yet because a lot of everyone's questions got answered. Without a doubt, band members from any band who get things thrown at them while performing want to beat the shit out of the perpetrator(s). Some act on it, some don't. Some just walk off stage. Just like punk rock, this whole throwing shit and spitting and overall disrespect for the band and the venue has come full circle into the nineties. Hopefully none of you all are into that crap (I doubt it since most everybody talks about WATCHING the show versus kicking someone's head in). Anyways, that's just a thought on that issue. I've got a question for the Crimson Ghost and anyone else who might know (Mark?). I noticed that Crimsy put in a story that elaborated on the Damned tour in England. Well, since you know a lot about this "tour" and you have the means to find the answers to a lot of our questions, I was wondering if you could elaborate on where you think the incidents that I described from the video MIGHT have occured because I haven't the foggiest. I said it might be England because it sounded similar to Yannis' post, but after reading your post about how there was no fighting in England aside from the glass incident, I tend to doubt it. So what do you think?? Again, they played only a couple of songs before the fight ensued and Glenn was the first to hit somebody in the head with the skull on the end of his guitar, then everyone (or so it seemed) got involved. Again, this was a video I saw years ago..... Maybe this was an American show - who knows? For all of the collectors - I'm going home on Thursday the 15th and I'll try to locate Sean and get a copy. If he still lives at Quantico (the Marine base), I think I can find him, if not, I can't. Cross your fingers. This sucks, because now my curiosity over the whole thing has been shot throught the roof. Hey EVB - thanks for taking the time to answer everybody's questions. That was great! You cleared up the Whisky/Joey question AND added some light on the O'Barr thing and its aftermath. Thanks again. That's all for now, I'm looking forward to the next issue AND #138 (how close are we?). -Brent ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Dec 1994 17:44:21 -0400 (CDT) From: stephen alan sisson Subject: well Crap! Damn... guess I shoulda tried to make the Indy show after all. Would'a been fun to meet Glenn (and Elizabeth too!). Oh well, he'd probably hate my guts anyway.. not sure I'd get along with him too well either... I'm pretty rude when it comes to people who believe in mysticism, although I do approve of his violent nature. Too bad he needs an excuse to attack people in the audience.. it'd be neat if he pummeled people at random all the time. Then their shows'd be really scary. I, and I'm sure many other fans, would like to see these. I've looked to buy some, but the prices range from $25-50, which I think is too much especially since the quality is quite poor. Is there someone who has a large collection (Elizabeth or Mark maybe), that would be willing to make copies for a small fee (the price of blank tapes and postage?) Ithink that many people would be interested. Please consider it. I've said it before & I'll say it again, Bobby is a real nice guy - I've been lucky to have quite a few chances to hang out & chat with him! Gee, would other folks like to read more interviews? I've got quite a few old Misfits interviews from various fanzines (pretty obscure ones at that!) I'd be willing to type up when time permits if people would like to read 'em! Let me know folks! Crimson Ghost - glad to hear that Jerry & Doyle have something planned for the May Chiller show!! Mike Stax just dropped me a letter & told me that Doyle would be there in full fiend regalia for sure!
