Well I dunno about paying $20 and then being a dick... but the last time
I saw Danzig was in Pittsburgh on the How the Gods Kill tour, cost like $15.
Actually it was outside of Pittsburgh in a club called "City Lights" or
something, I forget. Anyway I got really bored so I started flipping
Glenn off in the pit, just to see what'd happen. I guess he never
noticed 'cuz I'm still alive. Then I went to the back of the place to
cool off.. that was quite possibly the scariest pit I've ever seen..
really big dudes. My friend John got a cut across his forehead from that
pit.. he was really proud of that (I thought it was neat too). Anyway
when the band was chillin' with some tune like "Sistinas" I took off my
Legacy of Brutality T-shirt and held it way up in the air. I'm a real
prick that way. But, hey, it can't compare to the first time I saw em
in Indianapolis on the Lucifuge tour... the whole damn crowd was
chanting "Mis-FITS, Mis-FITS" over and over! I was surprised the band
ever came back to our town after that! Funny little sidenote from that
show: the band started the song "Pain in the World" and, ironically
enough, Glenn jumped into the pit and started beating up some guy. It
was just a few feet away from me so I decided to act like a giddy little
school girl and (quivver) go touch his sweaty back!! Ooooh! I felt pretty
cheezy doing it but, hey, crap like that is fun to think back to when you
get old and useless.

p.s.- by the time you see this I'll be outta school on break- seeya next
year, kids!

As mark, cg, evb, and geoff we@sel already know, this is reeally the misfit.
 I just changed names

on friday dismember 9 i *finally* got to see DANZIG after missing them four
times over the summer. i missed godflesh, cuz i was late, but i did get to
see Type O Negative (geoff-you are wrong). They were pretty cool. ia almost
got up on stage, but a bouncer at the riviera kinda threw me across the
crowd. i had my hand on the sttage, too. anywho, here's the cool part-whild
DANZIG was playing HOW THE GODS KILL, i was crowd surfing again, and i got
near the stage. Glenn saw me, looked me streight in the eyeballs, slapped me
five, and said, "Nice jacket, kid" to me. that was the thrill of my life. I
also saw weho I think was Eeries mom at the show-(EVB-is she a kinda old lady
wearing a whole bunch of DANZIG stuff?).thats my story.

to whoever asked about the bootleg vids-i bought a bootleg DANZIG video of
their show at the allentown fairgrowns in PA over the summer. the only
problem woth it was that when I went to watch it, there was nothing on the
tape! this made me mad, so now i have a $21+ credit at toones in allentown,
which I plan to use this week.

I still have 17 Jerry Only posters left over from our visit in October. These
are huge 39" * 27" full color posters of Jerry playing his bass in front of the
famous Crimson Ghost amps. He's all dressed up in standard Misfits style.
Anyone interested in obtaining one of these posters, email me. I'll send them
to you for the price of postage.

you might wanna look at www.wit.com (a mirror for some of the stuff on
ftp.uwp.edu). they have directories for a whole bunch'a stuff on just
about any band (gifs, lyrics, etc). they have a directory called
/music/pictures/m/misfits, which at this point only has the "evil eye"
gif. contact admin@wit.com about adding the stuff you got. you might
wanna tell 'em about the whole 'sFiTs www page, mebbe you could upload
everything you got!

to -child in heat-:

thanx for taking the time to type up that interview w/ steele. as one
of those to get in on the joke ex post facto, stuff like this is very
cool.

to EVB (the undead-head):

you got more 'views?!? type 'em up whenever you can...more of this sorta
stuff would make great reading...i can see it now: 'memoirs of a teenage
martian'. ha! btw...what does an undead-head sell to pay for trip and
tix? tye-dye skulls? :)

to She (-who-can-not-be-named):

ya might wanna collect these 'views (if you get enough of them) into
there own catagory on the www page.

*** catching up on old questions ***

(catching up on some old Qs)
my favorite 'sFiTs release:

if the compilation had 'return of the fly' it'd win, but since it
   doesn't...WAU is the winner.

my fav Samhain release:

the only one i got is _Initium_, so i guess by default...

my fav 'zig release:

tough one...i'm gonna have to go the 4p. each time i hear it, i
like it even more. just the other day, i finally got past the
"cheesy intro" on 'bringer of death' and oncovered a great song.

my 5 fav 'sFiTs trax (in no particular order):

   return of the fly
   bloodfeast
   theme for a jackal
   halloween
   she (from 7")
   skulls
   astro zombies
   last caress
   we are 138
(leaving the 10th unnamed, so as not to offend the other trax!)

my 10 fav Samhain trax:

hmm...everything off of _initium_. i guess.

my 10 fav 'zig trax (ignoring 4p, since it could easily take up 6 slots):

   mother
   possession
   when death had no name
   long way back from hell
   tired of being alive
   devil's plaything
godless ('cept for the slow parts and the "prayer" at the end)
   anything
   how the gods kill
   violet fire

*** random thoughts ***

wow, i never would've guessed that james hetfield sang during the
chorus of 'possession', but now i can't imagine how i could have
_not_ noticed!

does anyone out there know what the backmasking at the beginning
of 'possession' says (un-backmasked)?

what is "ugly things"?

man, i seriously gotta write more often...it just takes time for me
to collect any significant amount of thoughts...but then i procrastinate
waaaay too long, and end up having to do shit like this. oh well.

why is it that

the words to the
             lyrics
             on
             danzig's albums

are printed
in some really
        really
bizarre formats

sometimes the spacing
works w/ the way his
                 words
                 are
                 sung

but, other time they
don't always do

and why is it that

they always use "w/"?

it ain't like they're

Where did you see this video? Or more importantly, what format was it on?
If you saw it on a VHS player, chances are it was from an American show. If
oneo of those shows from England (and there were only 3) was taped, it would
have been on some format other than VHS (PAL I think they call it) and chances
are that if it had been converted to VHS and brought to America, it would
be well known. One of my bootleg videos has a big pile on scene in it - it's
one of the shows on the Creepy Compilation video. Perhaps this is what you
saw. EVB should be able to tell us since she's queen of the bootleg videos.

> Again, they played only a couple of songs before the fight ensued and Glenn
> was the first to hit somebody in the head with the skull on the end of his

Glenn has no guitar. Jerry's the one with the guitar with the skull on the
end. Of course Glenn may have grabbed one of Jerry's spares. I hope your
friend still has this video...

Danzigiel says:

> I recently saw a bootleg video of a Misfits show from Santa Barbara, Ca.
> Has anybody out there seen it and if so is it a good recording?

A lot of us have seen this video since it's on the Creepy Compilation video.
My copy isn't that great, but any Misfits video is good enough for me...

mark.

minutes ago the most awsome video apeard! Cantspeak by Danzig! This has
to be the best video they ever did. It uses lots of computer graphic
special effects like morphing. Its the mosty awsome video and I have it
on tape. I'll see how it copies onto other tapes and if it does copy good
enough I can give copies to anyone who wants them.

If you didn't see the video try and watch the Headbanger's Ball

Well, some of you might have already heard that someone got stabbed during
the show. I didn't know about it until the day after the concert, when my
aunt called me to tell me that they just announced it on the news. I think
that the person who got stabbed was one of the workers backstage, not some-
one in the audience. Apparently, the Salem concert happening the next day
was cancelled due to this unfortunate incident.

Well, getting on with my review of the show...I can't say much for God-
flesh, as I am not too familiar with their songs. They played about 5 songs,
the last being the only song I knew--"Crush My Soul", that was great live.
Type O Negative were great. I have seen them live before, so this was a test
to see if they were as good as I remembered them to be. They played 6 songs,
including "Summer Girl" by Seals & Croft and "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath.
(Is "Summer Girl" the right title of the Seals & Croft song? I know for sure
that he wasn't singing "Summer Breeze" off Bloody Kisses.) And yup, he
changed the line "The Devil's mark" to "Glenn Danzig's mark" on "Black No.1".
Danzig was great, of course. They had a bit of a problem with the mic during
"Bringer of Death", but overall the show rocked. Danzig was wearing the rub-
ber shirt and the Lucifuge necklace during the beginning of the show, but
he took off the necklace by the second or third song. He didn't take off the
rubber shirt but he did unzip it. My sister Elizabeth, me, and our friend
Michi were at the front the whole time Danzig was on, but we were at the
side near the speakers, so we couldn't see the new drummer or the new back-
drop. :( Here's the set list, though the order is not accurate (can't write
when someone's elbow is banging into my neck):
    Brand New God
    Little Whip
Until You Call on the Dark
    Snakes of Christ
    It's Coming Down
    Mother
    Twist of Cain
    Long Way Back from Hell
    Stalker Song
    Bringer of Death
    Going Down to Die
    She Rides
    Dirty Black Summer
    Left Hand Black
    Her Black Wings
    How the Gods Kill
Heart of the Devil --these last two were the encores.
    Do You Wear the Mark

Me and my friends did get to meet Glenn after the show, I got him to sign
the photograph inside the 4p CD booklet and I got to take a picture with
him. Heh heh, he's just the right height. He was nice, he didn't have a
  big rock star attitude.

Subject: Update: Stabbing at concert

I just found this in the METRO section of the San Francisco Examiner,
the Sunday, December 18, 1994 issue:

     FATAL STABBING AT COLLEGE CONCERT

SAN JOSE A concert employee was fatally stabbed in a scuffle with an
attempted gate crasher at a San Jose State University concert, officials
  said.
Victor Morita, 44, of Daly City, an employee of Bill Graham Presents,
was pronounced dead at San Jose Medical Center late Friday, said Lori
  Stahl, university spokeswoman.
Taken into custody by campus police was Justin Gies, 27, of Aptos,
who faces homicide charges. The suspect "tried to get into the back-
stage areas" of the university's Event Center, said Stahl. "Security
men stopped him, and he began fighting."
The suspect knocked Morita down and began stabbing him with a fold-
ing knife, she said. Security guards subdued Gies and held him until
  campus police arrived.
Campus authorities emphasized that the incident didn't involve any
students or San Jose State personnel.

Well, at least they didn't mention that it was a Danzig concert, and try
to make a big deal about that.

  Kris.

Misfits Bible, Number 42 Thursday, December 22nd 1994 Today's Topics: Possesion baskmasking Bootlegs Video Misfits Stuff/The Headbanger's Ball Old #41 Some news from Glenn & other stuff ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 20 Dec 1994 15:03:58 -0800 (PST) From: Tom Spence Subject: Possesion baskmasking Someone wanted to know what the baskmasking was on 'Possession'. I hooked a microphone to my computer, and recorded it then played it backwards, which I guess is forwards. Anyways, it's in Spanish, and I don't know spanish, but I could pull out a couple words like 'Satanis'. Come to think of it, I'm not sure what language it's in (SOUNDED like spanish). Anyways, I love to get a translations from somebody. Its an awsome video and I said watch the Ball for it well I am sorry to announce there is going to be no more Ball. These next 2 weeks it is interupted and in 3 weeks it is the last HEADBANGER'S BALL EVER!!!!!! Yes folks its sad to say but its true. If you have MTV's INet e-mail or their regualr mail address please post it and all metal fans protest this outrage. Secondly I need some Misfits info: 1. On The Misfits CD (ya know the yellow coverd one) what tracks are allgedly differnt? 2. Who is in that picture. My guesse is Glenn, Jerry, Doyel but I can't think of who the really odd looking buy in the back is. 3. Do they still make the Earth A.D./Evilive/Wolfsblood CD? 4. What Misfits bootlegs are any good (concert ones)? ------------------------------ From: She Subject: Old #41 Date: Wed, 21 Dec 94 0:47:05 EST Rduran pachuco king said: > does anyone out there know what the backmasking at the beginning > of 'possession' says (un-backmasked)? I can't tell you what it is, but I do know for a fact that it's in Latin. > what is "ugly things"? Ugly Things is a magazine put out by Mike Stax in CA. It's mostly about horror movies and 60's punk rock, but the last 2 issues have been big Misfits specials, #12 having a 22+ page interview with Jerry with loads of never before seen pictures, and #13 having a neat interview with Joey and lots of pictures supplied by EVB. > does anyone out there have an extra copy of 'earth ad' on CD? I don't have an extra copy, but I called Caroline Records yesterday and asked how many of those gold CD's were made. They said an estimate was around 5000. Personally I think that's too low since I've seen so many... mark ------------------------------ From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" Subject: Some news from Glenn & other stuff Date: Wed, 21 Dec 94 13:19:00 est Just got back from Seattle and the final show on the Danzig tour! Actually I'd flown in to Oregon hoping to catch the show the previous night in Salem, Oregon only to find out it was cancelled. According to EV it was because of problems with the venue (Salem Armory - he said that place was too large and the other place they were going to move it to which I think was La Luna's in Portland was too small) but I wonder if it wasn't because of what had happened two nights earlier at the show in San Jose where a security guard got knifed to death by a nut case trying to get backstage. That's seriously frightening shit (why on earth did he want to get back there so badly anyway?) Nobody is sure even HOW he'd gotten a knife into the venue as apparently people had been searched going in. (No wonder they went over everybody with metal detectors on the way into the Seattle gig!) Anyway, luckily the Seattle show went on as planned (or I would have been SERIOUSLY bummed to have flown that far for nothing!) Before the show they did a record signing at the Tower Records in Tacoma, WA so my friends and I headed there first & I gave the band some Christmas goodies - two tins full of candy encrusted cookies (i.e. small amounts of cookie dough holding together M&M's, Reeses Pieces & Hershey Kisses since Glenn is such a chocoholic) in specially decorated tins that my room mate Judy painted for me - one had the Kaluta Yin/Yang design surrounded by a holly wreath & the other had a saucy pin up of Satanika (pose swiped from an Olivia painting) wearing a red bikini top trimmed in white fur & a Santa hat. Tacky but cute. And Judy sculpted a cute little (Japananime super deformed style) Satanika figurine for Glenn that I wrapped up & gave him. Glenn doesn't do Christmas and I don't really in that I'm no Christian (I'm basically agnostic with neo pagan leanings) but I use it as an excuse to give presents to all my friends! Anyway, they really dug the goodies & I made Glenn promise to share the cookies (which apparently he did since John later told me how much he liked 'em!) >From the signing we jumped back on I-5 to get to Seattle (in heavy rain and rush hour traffic) to get to the venue. As it turns out Godflesh had cancelled out so I didn't get to see them again, so Type O Negative opened. And at last - Danzig. It was one of the best shows I've seen on this tour and Glenn was unusually talkative that night. He couldn't resist getting in a few digs though - before they played "Snakes of Christ" he said "And here's a song that was stolen by Stone Temple Pilots who recorded it as "Sex Type Thing". (No wonder it's the only song of there's I can tolerate. And it's got that "Twist Of Cain" bass line...) Of course they've stolen a lot of other songs from a lot of other bands". And before "Her Black Wings" it was "And here's another video that MTV won't play. Maybe if we dyed our hair green and played punk rock they'd notice us". The Seattle crowd was active but NOWHERE near as violent as the east oat crowds so it was nice not to get kicked in the head up front for a change. The encores that night were "Killer Wolf" and "Am I Demon" - a brilliant pair to close off the tour with! As far as MTV goes - well, at least they DID play "Cantspeak" last weekend on Headbanger's Ball (which thankfully my roomies taped for me while I was gone) which is a beautiful video making great use of computer animation & stop motion. Looks like the sort of thing MTV would pick up as a "Buzz Clip". (Well, it helps if Glenn will MAKE a video they can play. He does admit they did the "It's Coming Down" one just to fuck with people. I told him it's still not as disturbing as the Nine Inch Nails "Broken" movie and "Happiness in Slavery" which is also by the same guy who directed "It's Coming Down") "Cantspeak" is getting a LOT of airplay in Oregon and Seattle & even the alternative station here WHFS has picked up on it. (Almost DIED driving to work & hearing Danzig on 'HFS instead of Morrisey and the Cure...) Hung out & talked to Glenn backstage after the Seattle show & figured I'd use the opportunity to ask a few of the most frequently asked questions around here... (Like I've told him, I'm trying to clear up the rumors that get started on the net by providing a reliable source of info when I can!) 1) What's up with the Samhain Box set? According to Glenn it should come out in the summer of 1995 - FINALLY! He's been working with Steve Zing on this and Steve dug up a lot of photos & some good quality live tapes, so the boxed set will contain TWO live Samhain CD's! There will also be a sizable fold out booklet with unpublished photos and all of the lyrics including the ones to Unholy Passion and Final Descent. 2) Will he play Wolverine in the X-Men movie? Glenn HAS been talking to the folks at 20th Century Fox about this (it's not just a rumor in Wizard magazine, folks!) and they have given him a script. He has yet to read it and see if it's any good (sometimes movies on comics aren't such a great idea - anybody remember the Captain America, Punisher & Fantastic Four movies?) but he definitely is under consideration for the part. Apparently there is also talk of a separate Wolverine movie as well as an X -Men movie (probably to follow as a sequel if the first one is a success). There is ALSO talk of a Lobo movie from a different studio (he told me who was thinking about it but I spaced it) and if this happens he'd rather play Lobo than Wolverine. 3) Will there be any more releases like "Black Aria"? Look for a soundtrack album for "Death Dealer" sometime in 1995! ("Death Dealer" is a forthcoming comic from Glenn's publishing company Verotik based on the famous Frank Frazetta character - it will be drawn by Simon Bisley with covers by Frazetta) Speaking of Verotik, the first issue of SATANIKA will be out in about two weeks. For the story of the origin of Satanika check out the first story "Obscenity" by Glenn Danzig & Simon Bisley in their new horror comic anthology VEROTIKA #1 which is out now. Verotik also has a new editor, Hart Fisher, formerly of Boneyard Press (the folks who brought you the Jeffrey Dahmer comics). Oh, and for folks who want to get a peek of some of Glenn's artwork - he's planning a special issue of Satanika (#0) for next year's San Diego comic con that will print his original character design sketches (for Satanika and Dalkiel, Satanika's father). Now that the tour is over I guess this means I can finally get some sleep! Danzig will be back on the road again sometime early in 1995 (possibly as soon as February) A few comments on the last Bible: SSisson - hey, I was at that show in Pittsburgh at City Lights (big surprize, huh?) Wasn't that the dive in the strip mall outside of town? Still better than the horrible stainless steel disco "The Metropol" they'd played in at the 1990 Pittsburgh show. And that Lucifuge Indy show will burn forever in my memory.... Warrior 138 - Told ya he digs Lobo! (Re: chain on your jacket) Was the older lady really tiny? Eerie's mom is real short (surprizing considering how tall Von is) Yeah, tell what hell you went thru to get to the concert - I like hearing people's stories (and appreciate the dedication it takes to get wherever) rduran - >What does an undead-head sell to pay for trip and tix?< Uh, we scrape really cool roadkill off the street, boil it down & make bracelets out of vertebrae and other bones and black ribbons and sell those in the parking lots. (I'm really kidding but you wouldn't believe how many people buy it when I tell them that....) BTW your thermal sweater & bandanna will be going out real soon! Ugly Things is a fanzine put out by Mike Stax (405 West Washington St #237, San Diego CA 92103 - tell him I sent ya!) The current issue has a n interview with Joey Image (including a pic I took of him playing with the Undead) and a followup Misfits piece. The issue before has a HUGE Jerry Only i/v that basically chronicles the whole history of the Misfits and is illustrated by a TON of incredible rare cool pix. IMHO every fiend needs these. Back issues are available for $6 each - well worth it! This zine is huge and offset printed - magazine quality! I think Tower Records is distributing it now - saw the latest ish in the Tower in Rockville, MD. RE: how Glenn's lyrics are written out. He probably writes 'em out the way some people format their poetry. It definitely looks very deliberate. She (and others in earlier issues) If I could see that vid I could prolly i.d. it - offhand it doesn't sound familiar though but then I don't have everything memorized. I REALLY doubt that it's from England though. One thing to remember is that back then (when the 'Fits toured England) VCR's were hellishly expensive (like $1,200 - camcorders were much more & mostly just used by pros) so very few things were taped aside from stuff on TV shows. I don't even KNOW of ANY Misfits videos that early - the earliest one I have is from Detroit in 1980.... All the others I know of are from '82 and '83. Mark, I'm glad you pointed out that Glenn has no guitar - when I'd read the earlier post about this vid I was like "huh? he's gotta be mistaken, maybe he means Doyle. Wait, Doyle's guitar never had a skull on it - I guess he means Jerry's bass!" The Santa Barbara CA video is the one from the Goleta center. I've never seen a REALLY good copy of this - its taken me a few years of upgrading to get an OK one (that is pretty watchable and in color. (Most of the copies I've seen have been so many generations down that the color was gone and if you stood across the room and squinted MAYBE you could make out who's who) Crimson Ghost - thanx for the rehearsal transcript!! Really enjoyed!! (Closed my eyes & tried to picture it all) Looking forward to your interview with Jerry in '95! Kristina Marie Nelly - "Summer Breeze" is a Seals and Crofts song - that's what Type O performed. Of course Mr. Steele might have changed the lyrics to "Summer Girl" - he certainly likes playing with the lyrics (keeps him from getting bored I guess) I think that's it for now...... I'll start digging out those old fanzines & typing up some of the Misfits interviews! Hoping to have some BIG news to pass on in a few weeks if all things work out (yeah, I'm being cryptic) - Elizabeth ------------------------------------- To contribute to the next issue, please send email to: misfits@virginia.edu For more information, or for back issues, contact Mark Kennedy at: msk4m@watt.seas.virginia.edu The Misfits World Wide Web page is available at: http://watt.seas.virginia.edu/~msk4m/ The views expressed here are those of the individual authors only. Misfits Bible, Number 43 Tuesday, December 27th 1994 Today's Topics: Cantspeak/headbanger's ball oops backmasking on Danzig I Danzig in SF? Stoked! misfits list NECRONOMICON (Bootleg) stuff from #42 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 21 Dec 94 18:51:00 -0600 From: MICHELLE TEGGELAAR Subject: Cantspeak/headbanger's ball For anyone that has not yet seen the Cantspeak video, you must check it out - but I am sure that Elizabeth is right to say that it has "buzz clip" written all over it. It is quite different than anything that Danzig has put out, with all of the computer generated images and graphics. He has come a long way from videos like Dirty Black Summer which would cause Butthead to day "these effects aren't very special." AND - to Gabriel, what is the deal with the Headbanger's Ball? Not that I like it particularly, but it is the only forum for videos that of a heavier and more intense nature. My friend Bob who is in the band BILE told me that they would probably be making a change with the Headbanger's Ball to a show that was more "alternative" in nature. Are there any plans to replace the show with an equivalent program? Or are we out of luck when it comes to videos? If anyone saw Danzig's recent show in Chicago, I am happy to say that the crowd was virtually the same as in other years. We were all frightened because the little alternative station that plays predominately "Cranberries" type music was sponsoring the show. Some of us almost skipped the show from outrage, but I am very glad that I went and the show and the crowd was great, as usual. If the people that listen to that station like Danzig, I guess they were too scared to go. But I have to admit, I really enjoyed Type O Negative. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Dec 1994 10:18:14 -0500 From: She Subject: oops sorry team, i didn't mean to send the bible out a day early. i just lost track of the date.... mark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Dec 94 19:07:37 EST From: andrew mclaughlin Subject: backmasking on Danzig I The back masking on Possession is definitely Latin and from what I remember in High School Latin I, I believe that it is the catholic prayer intro "In the name of the father of the son and of the Holy Spirit" In Latin it translates to "In nomina patria et fillia et spirit tu sanctum ...???" Date: Fri, 23 Dec 1994 23:48:02 -0800 (PST) Just managed to pick up a copy of the "Beware and the Rest" CD at a used book-and-record store down the street from my house. Paid $20+tax for it, which I thought was a damn fine price, especially considering the joint usually sells bootleg CDs for about $30, and in the $45-60 range for double CD sets. I agree with the other assessments I've read about this disc elsewhere: the sound quality is not bad at all, though it's obvious that these were recorded from someone's vinyl copies and there's a pop or crackle here and there. The only track that sounds kinda messed up is "Rat Fink", but then that song really sorta sucks anyways. The disc pretty much fills up all the holes in what's available on CD from Plan 9 (so long as you count the Earth A.D./Wolfsblood/Die Die My Darling limited edition disc, and you discount lives). The recording is just a little muffled but no people screaming, no band talking, nothing and it sounds too good to be live. Especially for the Misfits. This wasn't in the discography and I thought I'd let you people know. Its 52 minutes lone and track 6 should be "Mommy Can I Go Out And Kill Tonight?" but its mislabeled on the CD. Misfits Bible, Number 44 Tuesday, January 3rd 1995 Today's Topics: Misfits interview from TOUCH AND GO FANZINE Re: Misfits Bible, #43 Questions, questions, questions For MBible ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" Subject: Misfits interview from TOUCH AND GO FANZINE Date: Tue, 27 Dec 94 11:03:00 est By popular request I'll start to type up some old Misfits interviews I've got in some old fanzines that most of ya probably haven't seen. Watch for 'em as time permits! They aren't in any particular order, just what I dig up. This first one is from TOUCH AND GO fanzine: THE MISFITS were interviewed by Brian Hyland at Bookies in Detroit 9-81 BH: So is this an official tour or what? Glenn: Well, we're heading back to New York now and then we're going to San Francisco and L.A. Then we come and do the whole fuckin' thing over again. BH: Are you playn' here again? Glenn: Ya middle of October. BH: Do you do any of the old stuff any more? That stuff at sound check I'd never heard before. Jerry: You should have been there last night (Chicago) Glenn: That stuffs off our new album. BH: When's it coming out? Glenn: About two weeks. The problem with us is that we had an album done but no one knows how to record us and we never like the album. BH: Did you re-issue "Night of the Living Dead?" Glenn: No way. Googy: Go to Bleecker Bobs (NYC) they have the last few copies. Glenn: It was a Halloween thing we did. BH: That "Who Killed Marilyn" single; who played on that? Is it the Misfits or just you? Glenn: Just me. BH: Who played on it? Glenn: I did everything on it. Googy: I think it sucks myself (guffaw) Glenn: Oh come on your better than Tom Snyder! BH: Is Plan 9 your own label? Glenn: No, there are other bands on it. Our old guitarist has a record comin' out on it. Googy: The Undead. Glenn: There was another band on it a long time ago, the Victims. It really sucked though. BH: Is that from "Plan 9 From Outer Space?" Glenn: YA Googy: There is a new fiend club did you know that? It's 3112 Grand Central Station, NY. NY 10016. If you want you can use the zip plus 4 code but its not in effect for two more years. Glenn: The old Fiend Club was run by a bunch of jerks, we run this one. Googy: Jerry and I get the mail. I read it on the bus, so don't send any letter bombs or I'll blow up. Glenn: We're gonna make a Misfits catalog. Ya know, Misfits beach towels. Googy: All sorts of shit, lunch boxes, and if we really get into it, socks and stuff. Glenn: Hey if you guys ever come across any dead animals on the road or something cut the fuckin' heads off and send 'em to us. BH: I've got a cat head if you want it. Glenn: Definitely! Googy: Ya like a deer head or horses head. BH: What was the Monster Movie Club like? Glenn: It was cool - we just went there and hung out. BH: Can you get lyrics from the Fiend Club? Glenn: Our new album will have a lyric sheet. BH: On "Bullet" was that Bobby Steele or not (Frances Coma) Glenn: No, it was somebody else. Barry: I told ya so ya dick! Googy: Why don't you guys come to a party at our hotel room? Bring all the nice girls you can find. BH: There probably won't be any choice ones, maybe a bunch of stew fed Canadian ones. Googy: Great bring the Canadians! Glenn: Enough about fuckin horniness Arthur! BH: When did this new line up start? Googy: Since the band got me and Doyle. Glenn: That's Jerry's brother Doyle, he's always been with the band but kinda you know. Googy: He was gonna be in the bad it was just a matter of time. BH: Is Mr. Jim in another band or anything? Glenn: He works at Crazy Eddies. BH: Where are you going to play in DC? 9:30? Glenn: Ya.. Googy: Chicago was great. The people wouldn't leave. They just kept coming' down going "play". We said "Look, we ain't got no guitars left, no strings", they just wouldn't leave. Glenn: We played every song we knew all but two. BH: Is "3 Hits from Hell" gonna be on the LP? Glenn: two of em are. Not "London Dungeon" BH: How many songs are on the album? Glenn: Guess BH: Duhh Glenn: 13 Googy: It wasn't planned though. Glenn: Bullshit it wasn't planned! BH: What's the album called? Glenn: "The MISFITS WALK AMONG US" BH: "Night of the Living Dead" you can't get anymore. Jerry: You can't get the 12" either... BH: There's a ton of those in record stores in Toledo. Googy: They go for 15 bucks in NY. Andy: They're in this one store where they have like a Barry Manilow album record an d then yours right behind it. Glenn: It'll just eat right through his record! Googy: I don't believe that shit. BH: What's the skull from? A movie or something? Glenn: Ya, what is it, "Crimson Ghost" (to Jerry) Jerry: Yep Glenn: It's an old serial but it's just a cool skull. Googy: Hey you guys got any reefers? BH: No we don't smoke it! Glenn: GOOD! Googy: Oh ya. I remember outside of Club 57! II lit up a joint and they just started saying "aw reefer sucks" and all this shit. About 90 people from Washington.... Glenn: Good, they should have killed you... Googy: That's why I got my hair cut. I said either join 'em or fuck it! BLACK FLAY was a nutty concert! Glenn: I don't even care about Black Flag. BH: You don't like them at all? Glenn: NO. I just said I don't care about them. I like them. BH: Do you guys listen to any hardcore LA stuff? Googy: I sold all my records and stereo. BH: So did I. Glenn: I only buy records once in a while. These guys (Jerry and Doyle) got a few records. Jerry: They've got scratches and beer all over em! Andy: Do you guys have any direct influences or... Glenn: US! Googy: Everybody else is a wimp, right? Nobody else rates! BH: Why did Bobby Steele quit? Googy: Bobby Steele got exterminated! Jerry: Bounced. BH: We talked to him in New York and he said he quit. Jerry: It doesn't make any difference whether or not he quit - he's just out... BH: Well, why did he quit? (get booted?) Glenn: Cuz he couldn't play fast enough. Basically that's it. I'm not gonna pull no punches. Googy: He didn't get along with anyone either. Glenn: His influence is Jimi Hendrix and I hate Jimi Hendrix... Jerry: He would always try to throw his leads into songs and then he couldn't play fast and he'd try to double up like upstrokes - like Chet Atkins. We'd say "No, that's cheating we're not going to let you play like that... Your our buddy..." Glenn: And when we recorded "London Dungeon" and everything he didn't show up for a couple of things and said let Doyle play it for me, and we said, well fuck it, why don't we just use Doyle cause he's playing with us at rehearsal all the time so fuck it... We kicked him out... Googy: It was impossible to get Bobby to go to rehearsals. He'd go once in a blue moon! Me, I'm out there 5 times a week prompt for practice these guys know! BH: Did you really record "Horror Business" in a haunted house? Glenn: What, you heard we didn't? BH: No, I was just wondering... Googy: That's my father's castle. It's been in the family for years. Glenn: Bullshit. Glenn: They tore it down though. It was in New jersey on this old long highway. It's desolate and there are all these old military training stables and shit with big mansions, you walk in the back and there are these bottomless pits filled with water. You fall in 'em and you fucking die... We took a mobile unit and did it... Matt: Did it have the reputation for being haunted? Glenn: Ya, it had a reputation. I remember when I was a kid we'd go driving down there bombed out of our brains! It's by the cliffs. Why you guys don't have any haunted houses down here? people get wasted in those houses.... Googy: Don't forget, all the nice girls, there's a fuckin party... Glenn: You should see the girls he fucks, most of them Googy: It's physical you know what I mean? You fuck and shoot your load, then on to the next town. Glenn: one of these times yer gonna fuck one of those ugly chicks and you'll pull out and nothing will come out with ya, it'll fall off inside! Googy: I always have the best girls in the world. These guys are jealous. Glenn: Oh fuck you. he said he's a combination of Errol Flynn and Fred Astaire and he's out in the dance floor fucking around, aw shit! Jerry: Errol Flynn! Glenn: really.... we were laughin for about a half hour.... Jerry: Ya he keeps us jolly. Comments on #43: Burkhard Jaerisch - Afraid I haven't seen an original copy of Cough/Cool for sale in several years now. I saw a few for sale 3-4 years back in the $300 dollar range and I wouldn't be surprized to see it going for more now as I know quite a few people looking for them but I never see originals for sale, just tons of boots. (By comparison I paid $170 about 5 or 6 years ago for mine) I'd suggest checking GOLDMINE magazine as IMHO its consistently been the best place to find original 7"s and colored vinyl. She - I have no idea who all played in "the Power and the Fury Orchestra". I'll make a note to ask though. Caught a short MTV news clip on Christmas about the stabbing at the San Jose show. Apparently the security guard was stabbed 25 times by the fellow trying to get backstage. The stabbers wife had gone with him to the show and she has no idea what made him do it - apparently he has no criminal background or record. Very strange... First of all, a comment. I did indeed see Warrior 138 (aka Misfit 20) at the Chi Danzig show, and it was definitely him slapping Glenn's hand and getting the crap kicked out of him by security (or they tried to, at least) Second, what is this about a Misfits box set? Is it a rumor? Something about 3 CDs and a video. Rumor, bootleg, what? Third, on Prodigy someone posted a note stating that Glenn would be answering questions, is this guy full of shit? He wasn't some big Prodigy guy, so I question it. Fourth, anyone have the new SamHain 7"er called 'Last Gasp'? I'm looking all over for it, and can't find it. Fifth, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for posting the interview with Bobby Steele (I can't remember your name, SHIT! You know who you are), That was SOOO cool, if you have more, please type them up! Sixth, I have a Danzig CD boot called 'How the Gods Play' if anyone is interested in purchasing or trading CDs for it, please e-mail me (CTernes@aol.com) Thanks a lot, and I will post more often from now on! Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Jan 1995 14:54:34 -0500 (EST) From: "L. Dodsworth" Subject: For MBible Hey this is my first post. I just read all the back issues of the Bible. and am glad that something like this exists for Misfit fans. I am 18, and live in Washington, DC, actually real close to Smash where I noticed a bunch of you know of. I have been into the Misfits for only a couple years now, but I have tried to collect as much of their shit as I could. My favorite album is a bootleg I picked up in England, called Beware : The Complete Singles 77-82. I really dig their earlier stuff. Of the studio albums probably LOB or WAU. Can anyone tell me how Glenn sounded when he played those 3 Misfit songs with Metallica? I've noticed that he has developed this fake southern accent, most evident on Lucifuge. This and his general transition from punk to metal, has pretty much convinced me that he sold out on punk and the Misfits. For a while I have wanted to make a 2 or 3 CD set that compiles all the Misfits songs, and variations. They didn't do that much, so all their stuff would probably fit on 2CDs. I know one guy who will make CDs for $25 each, but thats seems overpriced. Does anyone know anyone who can make Cds or print Cd booklets? Would anyone else be interested in helping me with this? Most Misfit Cd's are only 16-30minutes long, and a waste of money in my opinion. If anyone is interested or can help then please email me or post here. Other groups that I am into are Type O Negative (I just saw them last thursday headlining at a club; They are 10x better headlining then doing a short set as in the Danzig tour), The Dwarves, Corpsegrinders, Black Flag and most punk stuff. One last note: I thought that the flaming of Big Ted, was pretty much unneccesary and unwarranted. I never associated Punk with a straightedge view, except of course for Minor Threat and its ilk. Anyway sorry to have rambled... Misfits Bible, Number 45 Thursday, January 5th 1995 Today's Topics: Another Misfits interview Continental Crawler MB #44 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 03 Jan 1995 22:39:18 -0400 (EDT) From: RYAN_JAS@bentley.edu Ummm someone posted last bible that Danzig is recently 'developing a phony southern accent, which is really evident in Lucifuge'.. Well, first off, how recent was Lucifuge? Also, I dont see it in the music which is brilliant nonetheless. I the Danzig video he sounds like he has a somewhat Southern accent but that stuff happend after youve lived in places like Mississippi for awhile. Why would he want to fake an accent? And how does this prove that 'Danzig is selling out punk and the misfits'? That is the Biggest joke of all. He can do what he wants. His range of talent shows now, and he can do what he wants best to do. To say that Glenn Danzig is selling out punk and the Misfits is both a kick in the face to punk and also the Misfits..you better think about it baby.. As for myself, being alongside Danzigs trail of fire for many years (more than two) I can say that Danzig is NOT selling out anything..baby not to me.. I not 'flaming' whoever wrote that stuff, but also if ya wanna quote Type-O Negative find a Type-O Negative group..cause I think they suck and they fucking suck.. They were the worst band Ive seen live in a long time. I just felt like blasting that Cro-Mags head open, if i could reach that high, but hes not scary. Ahh Im rambling now. Oh yeah, thanks to E V Bouras for that great interview POST MORE.. ------------------------------ From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" Subject: Another Misfits interview Date: Wed, 04 Jan 95 10:36:00 est Hi again & time for another historical reprinted Misfits interview. I don't even know where this one comes from as I just have a photo copy of the article and not the whole 'zine, but hope you'll enjoy it: (And if anybody can I.D. where it comes from, please let me know!) ***************************************************************************** Intro: The Misfits were interviewed at 2 different times after their Mad Gardens show way back in January. This was originally to be a much longer article, but a great deal of the material was stolen by the editor of another zine. With material added to what I had left, donated by Mr. X, Also thanks to him and Soue Moped for the pix. The interview was conducted by Stewart, Butch, Naiya, and Mr. X with Glenn (vocals), and Jerry (bass) speaking occasionally. Glenn: Let's watch Richard Simmons and discuss how much we want to kill him, and dismember him. GD: Do you guys really hate Richard Simmons? G: Oh yea. No wait -- Who in this room would Not want to dismember Richard Simmons? (Someone says to castrate him) GD: What's your shoe size? Glenn: 9 1/2 Jerry: 9 1/2 GD: What's the scene in New Jersey like? Glenn: New Jersey and New York have a really good scene, despite what you read. GD: How big is the New York scene? Glenn: About 500-1000 people will come to the bigger shows. GD: Do you like the Midwest or LA? Glenn: I like 'em both. You shouldn't compare -- everybody's got their own scene and they're proud of it. GD: How'd you like Japan? Glenn: We didn't go to Japan. I wish we'd go there because I collect shoguns and they have tons of em over there. Shit I could go crazy there. GD: What took you guys so long top get to Phoenix? Glenn: We couldn't get a gig last time in Phoenix so we had to play Tucson. GD: What did you think? Glenn: I though tonight was great, cept for the cops closing it down. They kept making us turn it down. Jerry says Hey! Jerry: Hey! Glenn: So we'll be back again; this was great. The thing in Tucson was I called the guy back to confirm the gig, and then he thought that he wasn't gonna put on the show. And then he didn't put up any flyers or posters or anything. GD: How did the "Horror Image" start? Glenn: We were always this way, since back in '78. Its not really horror rock, its just that instead of singing about politics we just wanna sing about stuff we like. GD: Why do you think that so many other bands are like this now? Glenn: I don't know. It's sorta flattering. GD: Are you satanic? Glenn: We're aware. We don't practice or anything, y'know. We're just aware of everything. GD: What do you think of 45 Grave? Glenn: They're boring. GD: Do you like Christian Death? Glenn: No, I don't like 'em that much. GD: What are some of the bands that you do like? Glenn: Go ahead, tell 'em! Tom Jones. They've got a tape of all Tom Jones and they play it in the van. GD: Where'd you get your tattoo? Glenn: In Costa Mesa. It was free. GD: Are the Misfits Straight-edge at all? Glenn: I am, but I went off the other night. Me and Andy from the Necros went off with 2 bottles of schnapps. The other guys aren't. GD: How do you feel about drugs? Glenn: I don't care what other people do, I just don't do it. people can go and take a gun and blow their heads off, and I don't care. I could give 2 shits what anybody -- As long as it doesn't fuck with me. When it comes down to screwing things up for me, then I care. So, go out and kill your mother, I don't care. It's not my mother... GD: Except for Robo, has this been the original line-up? Glenn: No, me and Jerry are the only original members, and Doyle is Jerry's brother. We had a different guitar player, he left and Doyle was ready, so we got him. When Googy quit we got Robo. GD: Why did Googy quit: Glenn: He wanted to be in another band. GD: Where did you get your bass? Jerry: I made it. The top part came -- some guy made me a mold of a skull in Cal. And he brought it down to the shop. That was it. (The large - about 2" -- spikes they wear on their jackets were also made by them.) GD: Who designed the classic Misfits skull? Glenn: I don't know. It's from an old movie, "The Crimson Ghost," but we just sorta took over. GD: are your performances real physically taxing? Glenn: For us, yea. We don't stand around, like a lotta bands. I hate bands that stand there and play and don't move around, like (name ??). Most of those limey bands don't move around or nuthin. They just.... (Talk switches to their experiences in England) They eat once a day over there, and they're like "What's wrong with you??" They have, like, "Tea," and then they have dinner. And that's why, like we are here, and you guys lost the fuckin war! (Another Misfit: I'll eat as much as I want, heh-heh, heh-heh!) That's so funny, Over there, they're callin us "rebels," and the cops, when we got arrested over there they told us -- GD: You got arrested? Glenn: We got arrested everywhere (everyone talks at once). Anyways, they we're tellin me (stern, somber voice) "We still haven't recognized America. You still belong to us (Everybody laughs loudly) They were serious -- dead serious. They were (same voice) "You're a rebel. You're an outcast." I'd say "C'mon ya lost the war." "Shut up! Shut up!" They got real mad, I told them "We saved your ass in World War II" (More laughter) They're serious. They're like the New Orleans police -- Gestapo! (discussion) They took us and 20 fans -- 3 paddy wagons. GD: DO you have a militant stand against cops? Glenn: Cops have fucked with us all our lives. Down in New Orleans we got arrested for being in a graveyard late at night (see clipping). GD: What do the Misfits have to say about the world? Glenn: It sucks. GD: Thanks. Clipping referred to in interview:: COPS HEX VOODOO PUNKERS NEW ORLEANS (UPI) - Seven punk rock music fans looking for the tomb of a voodoo queen and arrested for trespassing have filed complaints against city police. A police spokesman declined comment on the case Sunday pending results of an internal investigation. Police arrested 18 people including members of the punk band The Misfits. Police said several members of the group carried chains and many of the women sported bald heads or Mohawk haircuts. A 16 year old girl arrested at the cemetery filed a false arrest and battery complaint, claiming an officer struck her in the face with a flashlight when she refused to say whether she was male or female. Carlos Diaz, 27, of Metarie, LA, told police the group went to the cemetery to find the tomb of legendary voodoo queen Marie Laveau following a performance by the band. He said they looked through the cemetery gates, but had not entered the grounds when they were arrested. ********************************************************** Comments on #44.... Quiet mailing, guess everybody is away for the holidays - gotta say I miss the bible! CTernes - the only Misfits box set I've ever heard of is a bootleg. There is a Samhain box set planned with two live CD's in it according to what Glenn told me about 2 1/2 weeks ago - it should be out later in1995. (And of course there is the Danzig "How the Gods Kill" boxed set with a CD and video in a 3D box) Haven't heard of Glenn answering questions on Prodigy. He did do a "Cyber-Talk" thing on American Online back on Nov. 14 1994 that was posted to Misfits Bible #36. L.Dodsworth - Hello and welcome - glad to read your first post! Another MBible member in DC, huh? I'm in the nearby 'burbs myself. I was at that Type O Negative show last week at the Bayou too (just in case you might have seen a gal up front with long black hair wearing a "Faust" shirt) - great show! Very surprized to see them back on the east coast so soon after the Danzig tour - hear that next they are going on the road with Pantera. RE: putting out your own Misfits CD. You do understand that this is illegal due to copyright infringement (can you say "counterfeiting?" I thought you could). So it's probably best not to announce any intention of illegal activities to the whole frigging internet, OK? Just a friendly warning..... Not much new around here. Just got an interesting Danzig promo CD single for "Cantspeak" - its got the American records logo and everything on it but doesn't say who the band is or what the song title is. I guess the idea was that maybe a DJ might play it and not have any previous conceptions about the band (that might stop 'em from listening to it in the first place) Bye for now! - EVB ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Jan 1995 14:40:47 -0500 From: She Subject: Continental Crawler I just thought I'd mention this again, since it's been awhile. Everyone should check out this EP. I love it. The music is nothing like the Misfits, but it's realy catchy and the band was obviously talented. The drummer for this band is Mr. Jim who played drums on the best Misfits stuff - the bullet EP, the first side of Legacy, and a few others. It's only $4, which is a hell of a lot cheaper than a Misfits 7". Oringally there were 1000 copies of this thing. That was in March of '79... CONTINENTAL CRAWLER: PROMOTIONAL POLLUTION Attention Misfits fans. If you want everything about the Misfits you've got to have this record. It features ex-Misfits drummer Mr. Jim (Jim Catania) who played on such excellent Misfits songs like "Attitude" and "Hollywood Babylon". Mr. Jim's "other" band was Continental Crawler, who put out a limited edition EP with 3 songs in 1979. There are only a few copies left of this rare record which features a picture sleeve and a band picture. You can get a copy by sending $4.00 (check or money order) to: Mike Myers P.O. Well, personally, I thought he sounded just like he always does, although it was disappointing that he tried to sing them the Metallica way instead of the original Misfits way. Obviously he's familiar with their cover versions. No fake accents, no nothing. To sell out, don't you have to change your style to fit the mainstream? I wasn't aware that Glenn had done this. People change. I imagine you don't listen to the same stuff you did when you were younger. To everyone else: if you want to be removed from the mailing list, please let me know. He sounds alot different on his stuff later then the misfits. I think he is doing a big Jim Morrison imitation. Look at the back cover of Lucifuge. He didn't have that southern edge when he was in the Misfits. Glenn lived over half his life in NJ. You do not lose that accent and gain a southern one by moving south. I thought the only places he lived in were NJ, NY, and LA any way. > And how does this prove that 'Danzig is selling out punk and the > misfits'? Danzig changed his style of music from punk to metal. I sincerely doubt you could critique Type O from such a short set. They are more innovative then anything post-Samhain that Danzigs done. Maybe you don't think Pete Steele is scary but Glenn sure does. I read that Glenn wouldn't let Pete Steele even look at him or when the band played, because he was so intimidated by Steele's height (ie 7ft. or so). > From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" > Subject: Another Misfits interview > Date: Wed, 04 Jan 95 10:36:00 est > > I'm in the nearby 'burbs myself. Other then that... > To sell out, don't you have to change your > style to fit the mainstream? I wasn't aware that Glenn had done this. > People change. I imagine you don't listen to the same stuff you did when > you were younger. I definetly think that Glenn changed from a punk band to a metal band. Metal bands at that time were more mainstream then any punk band, especially the Misfits. Sure people change their musical views, but you must look closely at why. I always saw Misfits and Samhain as independant bands, but I think the group Danzig is heavily influenced by Rick Rubin. The heavy Satan images that go with the music, is different from Samhain and the Misfits. They were clearly Evil, but they didn't seem Satanic. I know people will disagree with me, but everyone is entitled to an opinion. I have all the Danzig albums, and genuinely like them, but can't not contrast it to the Misfits. -LD "Trust and you will be Trusted says the Liar to the Fool" - Type O Negative ------------------------------ From: pbright@ibm.net Date: Sat, 07 Jan 95 16:03:18 Subject: Re: Misfits Bible, #45 First off, I have a few questions, if anyone can answer them, cool. 1) What are Eerie's, John Christ's, and Chuck Biscuits' REAL names? 2) For those of you who have met Glenn, what did you think of him? How did it go? 3) Does Glenn have a wife/girlfriend? He's not really "seen" with anyone regularly as far as I can determine. He's probably had the same woman for years or is a loner. I start throwing out ideas of where he might have put them, but since he is a total *moron*, he doesn't gety up and look for them. 15:27-Hang up the phone, call Al (the afore mentioned fiend) to tell him that Jeremy can't find his ticket. 15:29-Hang up, call Jeremy back. He's still looking. 15:40-Call Jeremy back, still looking. 15:48-Call from Jeremy. He knows where the tickets are. His mother threw them away. Warrior starts on a verbal rampage involving many four-letter words and frequent use of the word "mother". 15:54-Rampage ends. Hang up and call Al to tell him what happened. We decide that since I still have my ticket, he is going to go up to Rose Records and buy another ticket. We also decide that I should call Jeremy back and see if he can get a new ticket so we can still go. 16:01-I find out that according to Jeremy's afore mentioned mother, Jeremy is "just too sick to go downtown, but it's O.K. for him to go into work" because now they need him. 16:03-Hang up phone after a size 12-wide hole is put into my bedroom wall by my size 12-wide boot. Decide that now would be a good time to call my stepdad, Bob. 16:07-Get through to Bob, but he's too busy to talk to me at the moment. 16:09-Call my own Mom, tell her about the hole in the wall and ask if me and Al can get a ride to the show. She asks why. I tell her the same story you are reading up to this point. She says that she will ask Bob if he would like to go downtown for the evening. She'll call me back in a few minutes. 16:14-Call Al to tell him that my parents might be able to drive us. Mom calls back (with Bob listening in, unbeknownst to me) so I gotta hang up on Al. 16:16-An agreement is made that the parents will take us to and from the show, but Al has to get over to my house. 16:19-Call Al and tell him the deal. He'll call me back in a few. 16:22-Al calls back. His mother will not let him go now because the whole situation is "too complicated". 16:23-Another size 12-wide hole in my wall is narowally avoided. 16:35-With all that has gone on today, I have this thought that the show might have been canceled. Call the Aragon Ballroom. The show has not been canceled, but it has been moved to the Riveria. Don't worry, it's across the street from the Aragon. No biggie. 18:00-The parents coincidentally arrive home at the same time. 18:15-I tell them that Al is not going, and that the show has been moved. 18:16-The parents have second thoughts about me going to a concert downtown in a bad neighborhood alone. 18:25-I convince them that I'll be O.K. 17:38-Warrior pulls up in front of the Riveria in a white 1991 Jeep Cherokee Limited. 17:42-I finally make it inside, and head toward the pit to enjoy the show. Can somebody comment on how good it was? Is it available on anything other than the "Pile of Shit" bootleg??? I would really like to hear this. I tried to get the Metallica bootleg back home just to hear those three songs but I couldn't find it anywhere. If somebody can get a copy to sell to me I'd appreciate it. oh yeah, I hate long stories, I'll make this one quick about my Danzig concert experience. I went to see Metallica/Danzig/Suicidal concert in Des Moines last summer before I came to the shit hole I'm at now. I lived two hours away and the ticket said the concert started at five. I stayed at a hotel about four miles away and left about 3:30. The traffic was so bad the it was about 4:45 and I was still a few miles away. I parked and RAN the about two miles to the stadium. I got to the gate as Danzig was starting and I missed the first three songs and couldn't get near the stage(I had only really come to see Danzig). It turns out I had been misinformed and Suicidal had gone on about 4:00(I didn't care about missing them though) and Danzig started about 5:15 which I guess was late. I'm basically in jail so I won't get to see another Danzig show for a long time I'm sure. Oh well, hope I didn't bore anybody with that. It was still a cool show, at least what I got to see. pum ------------------------------ From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" Subject: 1979 Misfits Interview from SLASH magazine Date: Mon, 09 Jan 95 10:43:00 est This interview with the Misfits appeared in SLASH magazine, Volume 2 Number 9, October 1979 . Besides it's a beautifully done video.... I know Danzig complain a lot that MTV won't show their videos but it does help when they produce one like this that has nothing the old censor biddies could object to (that is, I guess they never noticed the quick shot of Charlie Manson?) Just got back from vacation and was catching up a little on my Bible reading. Still have a couple more to go, but I'm getting there. I got two cool videos for Christmas this year. I got the Misfits 'Creepy Compilation' video and a Samhain video, but I can't remember the name of it. The Misfits video isn't bad. The first segment is from a cable broadcast of some sort. The sound quality isn't great, but the footage is decent. The second segment is from a live show (in Detroit I think) and it is terrible footage, but you can hear it ok. The 'Braineaters' video is next, and I was too tired to watch the last segment. I haven't watched the Samhain one yet either. I slept through most of my vacation and therefore didn't get around to doing much of anything. One thing I did do was read an article about Danzig in my local newspaper. I thought I would copy it real quick in case any of you wanted to read it. So, here it is! from the Anderson Herald Bulletin, Anderson, IN 29 December 94 DANZIG FINDS THEIR MUSIC ACCEPTED Philadelphia (AP)- Glenn Danzig knows why his band is so hard to market. Once sold as a heavy metal band, Danzig is now being labeled alternative and "Can'tspeak," from its new album, "Danzig 4," is receiving play on alternative and rock radio. "How do you market a revolution?" he said. When it's pointed out that a way was found to market the current punk explosion, the former singer of the influential punk band the Misfits gets irate. "That's not punk," he growled. "I was involved in punk, OK? They found a way to market watered-down pop punk." So why does he think Danzig is so hard to sell, despite the success it had in 1993 with the revamped version of "Mother," originally from the band's first album and redone for the live EP, "Thrall-Demonsweatlive?" "Because we won't sell out," he said. "I've chosen my path in life, and I deal with whatever I get from going on that path. I knew I was going to get a lot of (grief), but that's OK...The other people are going to take the pop route and they'll make all the money. That's not me. I don't want to be that. I don't need to be that. I'd rather not do it than be that." Aboard the band's comfortable tour bus, the "Master of Darkness" looked more vulnerable and a little road-weary as he curled up on a couch, occasionally resting his dark head back on the cushions. He wore his customary black. The songs on the band's latest album, "Danzig 4," combine the blues and metal with Danzig's sometimes crooningly seductive, sometimes violently roaring voice. All are rooted in his frustration with society. "I have no friends, and I am not politically correct with anybody," said Danzig, 35. His image has often been labeled cartoonish. "I don't like the way things are going with the world," he said. "I don't want to just be top No. 1 record. Let the fools play the game- I'm not a fool. They can say what they want...I'm a cartoon, I'm the devil, I'm a revolutionary, I can't sing, whatever they want to say." In a lot of his material, including current songs such as "Dominion," Danzig plays the role of tempter, offering an outstretched hand to his listeners. "Is it tempter?" he asked. "I don't think it is- it's not meant to be, really. I think it's more of a soothing thing." But that soothing comes at some price, he says. "All soothing does, usually," he said with a smile. "Very rarely does it not." His music is covertly sexual, often tinged with sadomasochistic overtones. He says he specifically tries to address a female audience, urging them to be, as he say, "in touch with their sexuality." A man outside the venue carrying a crucifix in silent protest is typical of the reaction Danzig tends to receive. He's also had fans beg him to kill them. "I think it's funny," he said. "I just laugh and go, 'Get out of here.' I treat it as a joke, even though they're serious." Despite a lackluster crowd, Danzig still stirred the Tower Theater mosh pit as a witch would stir a cauldron, sweeping it into motion with each gesture, each mighty roar. He tore his shirt to bits after a few songs, doing the rest of the show bare-chested and glistening with sweat. He opened the show with two new songs, "Brand New God" and the Jim Morrison-esque "Little Whip." They wrapped things up with several older tracks, including "Mother," "She Rides," and "Killer Wolf." Danzig has taken on the comic book industry with the same defiance he brings to music. He's working on several adult comics, including one called "Satanica," about what he calls a "very powerful female character." "I started this line of comics with all the best writers and the artists are all the best artists that there are," he said. "It's scaring a lot of people because there's no censorship in it." Just prior to taking the stage, amiable guitarist John Christ sat on a backstage couch also clad in black- leather blazer, hat pulled low over his eyes, and a silver cross at his throat. He's the eternal student. Classically trained at Peabody Prep and Towson State in Baltimore, he has a passion for jazz and classical guitar as well as the minor-key blues stylings for which he's known. Where Danzig has his comics project and one solo album under his belt, Christ has worked on several ABC promo spots for TV movies. There's also a compilation CD put out by Guitar for the Practicing Musician magazine. He contributes a lively hard rock instrumental called "For Christ's Sake" that's full of the burning runs and blissful soloing he doesn't get to explore in Danzig. "Many times I'll blow right through a solo," Christ said. "Other times, I'll play solos that I like and he (Danzig) won't like them because they're too fancy. He likes slower blues stuff, so then I come back and play slower blues type of stuff and he's happy and we go with that. The flashier stuff, the more polished, melodic and exciting guitar work, I save for my own stuff." Christ is working on a solo album, but plans are incomplete. -End of article- Think what you will of it. I thought it was interesting to see an article about them in my local paper. It's usually all articles about Green Day or someone. It's not an unusual article, surely doesn't contain anything most of us don't already know. In fact, I think it's pretty reminiscent of several other articles I've read about the band. There's always mention of "Mother" as well as describing their traditional black outfits, but oh well. It might be more interesting to one of you readers. Not a whole lot more to say tonight. Like I said before, still have some catching up to do. Cya all later! Misfits Bible, Number 47 Thursday, January 12th 1995 Today's Topics: Interview from WE GOT POWER #3 replies 'n' sheeit articles sellout All Hell You know something? i read the bible more stuff BAD NEWS Okay.. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" Subject: Interview from WE GOT POWER #3 Date: Tue, 10 Jan 95 10:50:00 est Here's a Misfits interview from the fanzine "WE GOT POWER #3" - enjoy! ************************* The Misfits were interviewed at Rachel's house after their April 13 Whiskey show. Dave, Ru: and Jordan talked mostly with singer Glenn Danzig. Doyle (guitar) and Googey (drums) were also present at times. Dave: I wanted to ask the bass player why he smashed up his bass onstage, but he's not here. Glenn: Because he's so fucking cool. He said it didn't work, so he fucked it up. Ru: Can you compare the New York scene to the way it is here, like with the cops etc.? Glenn: Cops are cool in New York. They know that they got better things to do than be bothering little kids. They're assholes here! And the kids would crack a few heads if they knew what was good for them. They should just take the cops and beat the shit out of them. If the cops got guns, they should get guns. Because it's ridiculous here. It's more than just harassment. You should take the cops out and shoot 'em around here. Jordan: Is there a good scene in New York? Glenn: Now there is. It died for a while 'cause people were watering it down with faggy disco new wave shit. Dave: What L.A. bands do you like? Glenn: Black Flag. Ru: That's it? That's _all_ that appeals to you? Glenn: That's it. Black Flag. Jordan: What kinds of people go to your gigs --- like, are they punks or paying customers, or... Glenn: '_Punks_'?? What do you mean, "are they _punks_"??? Ru: Uh, Glenn... try to lower yourself to our level, please. Dave: Yeah... we're kinda stupid. Glenn: Well, do you mean trendy mohawk people, or people in leather jackets, or skins? We get everything. L.A. isn't the only place with people who're into punk music. That's another thing I don't like about L.A., they thing they got the market cornered on punk. We had a thousand people at our last New York show. Ru: Is Washington D.C. happening? Glenn: No. Not anymore. Maybe now that Minor Threat's back together it will be--when they broke up, the D.C. scene sorta fizzled. It _was_ real good. But the midwest scene is the best. Better than L.A. or New York. Detroit, especially. Jordan: So when are you coming back to L.A.? Glenn: In June or July. Ru: have you ever played in L.A. before? Glenn: No. They wouldn't let us last time. We played at the Nest, and a couple gigs in Frisco in November. We tried to get some dates in L.A. but they told us we were too violent, too loud, too fast, and there'd be lots of fights. Slash got us the show at the Whiskey -- that's the only reason we got it, because of Slash. Googey: (entering room) So, like, what kind of magazine is this? Dave: A really good fanzine. Glenn: Tell your readers to send us all their skulls. Any skulls you got. We collect 'em. If your baby brother dies, just cut off his head and send it to us. I collect horror movies, too, shit like that.....horror posters. I like blood. Dave: What about your name, "The Misfits"? Do you think that fits in with the skulls and all? Glenn: I think it's a great name. I don't care if it fits in or not. What do I care? If you don't like it, don't come see us. Don't buy our records. What do we care? But you will, 'cause you _love_ us. Dave: Tell us about the Fiend Club. Glenn: It's a fan club. It's basically so we can get feedback from our fans, and we send 'em free shit. Whenever new buttons or pictures come out, we mail 'em for free. They can order t-shirts through us for five dollars instead of ten. Print our new address. Dave: What's the radio scene like in New York? Do you get much airplay? Glenn: Yeah. Timmy Summers has a hardcore show, he always plays us. There's the New Afternoon show on right before that on Wednesdays. Ru: What other N.Y. bands get airplay? Glenn: He plays a lot of British stuff lately, but some good N.Y. bands are Reagan Youth and Kraut. That's about it. The Beastie Boys were good, but they broke up. I don't like N.Y. bands that say, "American Music sucks. The British are more emotional, more into what they're doing." I hate British bands. There's more talent in one acre of America than there is in all of fucking Britain. Dave: It's really ironic how the L.A. Oi scene really seems to like you guys a lot, and you're definitely American. They hate every L.A. band. Glenn: do they like Black Flag? Ru: They _despise_ Black Flag. Googey: They're assholes then. Besides us, Black Flag's the best band in America. Glenn: Oi is allright. It's just like everybody singing along and shit. I'm into singalongs. Besides me having a good time onstage, I want other people to have a good time too, --RU ********************************************************************* Comments on Bible #46: Wolverine-J - The song "Less than Zero" is available on the soundtrack album for "Less than Zero". I never heard of a single version of it - just what's on the album (which also contains a song written by Danzig & Rubin sung by Roy Orbison) L. Dodsworth - I guess you'd rather Danzig not "sell out punk" and keep churning out two chord wonders for 20 albums like the Ramones? I think that would get old fast.... I'd rather see musical progression. But I REALLY had to laugh when you said that Type O Negative "are more innovative then anything post-Samhain that Danzig's done". Huh? Type O were a metal band that's turning into a goth band. There's nothing on "Bloody Kisses" that's particularly innovative - it's nothing that bands like the Sisters of Mercy and the Fields of the Nephilim among others haven't already done for a dozen plus years! And if you think their cover songs like "Paranoid" and "Summer Breeze" are innovative than you obviously haven't heard the Sisters covering tunes like "Knocking on Heavens Door" and "All Along the Watch Tower" a decade ago (and don't try and tell me Peter Steele's never heard Andrew Eldritch!) And I really LIKE Type O too (of course I've been a huge Sisters/Nephilim fan for years and years too) I don't know where you read that Glenn wouldn't let Pete Steele even look at him or when the band played because he was so intimidated by Steele's height but that's not what I observed on the last tour (I'd frequently see Steele & Co watching Danzig when they played). Of course Glenn can walk under Steele's chin but then so can a lot of people. They seemed to get along pretty well & cracked a lot of jokes - Steele called Danzig "Elvis" & Danzig called Steele "Lurch". pbright - to answer a few of your questions: 1) EV is Eric Stellman, Chuck Biscuits is Charles Montgomery. I know John's real name too but I don't want to repeat it because he REALLY values his family's privacy and doesn't want them harassed. 2) I've known Glenn for about 4 1/2 years and have had the chance to hang out and talk to him quite a lot - he's always been very nice to me. I think how he treats people depends ENTIRELY on how they approach him. I mean if you act like a jerk and harass him because he won't sign your Misfits bootleg, then you deserve what you get. 3) No wife. Most definitely a loner who doesn't want any emotional baggage. 4) If he says he's 35 then that's fine by me. If he IS any older then he looks DAMN good for his age! (he looks damn good anyway...) Paul B Hahn - I guess Glenn's comments on Detroit depend on the interview! You'll see in the one above that he comments favorably on the Detroit scene. I know Danzig always go over well in Detroit (I've seen them there 3 times & they always had a huge sellout crowd) Warrior 138 - ack! What a tale of frustration - glad you finally made it to the show. PumroyKJ98% - Another tale of frustration and woe. Glad you at least caught some of the show. Sorry to hear you're away for a long while. Goat - Thanks for reprinting the Danzig article for the paper - I REALLY appreciate it as I would have missed it otherwise! Um...didn't knwo there WAS one....I know the soundtrack CD is still in print, which you should get for the sheer fact that PE and Slayer are on it too, BUT, as an added bonus, Glenn (co-)wrote the Roy Orbison song "Life Fades Away" that appears on it. Where he is now, he's been trying to get to from day one. Anybody who takes a look at his past can tell that. I do get a weird feeling in my gut these days, though, especially like the one i felt watching the "cantspeak" video this break. I dunno. Maybe I'm getting too old, or maybe I'm not growing up- one of the two, or both- but Danzig music is getting more and more unpalatable for me. I haven't really _enjoyed_ the music since the first album. I just kinda thought the imagery that they put forth was fun, but that is beginning not to be enough anymore. I just feel like there's too much going on anymore for me to care- I missed another Danzig tour, and I really feel no loss whatsoever. Oh well... maybe I can start my own damn band and make the kind of music I really want to hear if I care that much anyway. So Danzig sucks. Everyone knows cause everyone told them, right. 'Cant stop for the reeling'.. Yesterday I looked in my mail and thought it was all junk mail. But as I looked closer this little paper booklet had a drawing of Alice Cooper, next to hime was Gene Simmons (They were both all made up) The booklet was titled Rock Concerts on video and was printed this year (1995). In front of the other two was this one guy with dressed in all black, cept for the big skull on his shirt. Why does he bother lying about it? Well, most people don't know when his real birthday is. What he says in his interviews entirely contradicts what the people he went to high school with say. Ask the Misfits and they'll tell you he's 39. But who is going to ask them right? So Glenn says he's 35 and therefore he fits in better with the scene that's happening now with all these young bands. He graduated from high school in 1973 and was born in 1955 and that's all there pumroy says: > Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but I really didn't know until recently > that Glenn sang those misfits songs with Metallica in Chicago. I Personally, I don't like the way those songs sound with Metallica playing. Nobody can do the Misfits right except for the Misfits. I haven't seen any bootlegs with the songs on it, but I do have a copy of those 3 songs. EVB and Goat (angela) thanks for typing in those articles. They kind of bulk up the Bible and make it more interesting... and b. flex, thanks for the bootleg review. I just got corrected lyrics for the majority of the Misfits songs. I just finished reading all the back issues of the Bible and had a couple more comments. First of all, to Stephen at IU, was the show you saw at the Ritz? If it was then I know the guy who Glenn beat up. It was a kid named Aaron, who is my friend Andy's older brother. Apparently he had a bootleg shirt that he had made in his graphic arts class, and he held it up and showed it to Glenn. We all know how Glenn feels about bootleg stuff, so it really pissed him off and he beat the shit out of Aaron. I don't think Aaron was too upset about it. Especially since he'll gladly talk about it to this day. Secondly, to azrael, that bootleg sounds really cool. I would be willing to trade copies with you. I'm in the process of making a tape which has several 7"s, a 12" boot of a radio broadcast, and "Beware and the Rest". It's not done yet, but it may take two tapes because the radio broadcast is pretty long. I also have two Danzig boots that I would tape for you, and anyone else who may want them. I too am asking only for the cost of the tape(s) and postage, or trade for other cool stuff. Guess that's about it for now. It's time for Letterman! Cya! If anyone ever comes across the name Sean (or Richard) Jaehne, ask him if he's still got a copy of that tape. I skimmed a couple of bibles and to answer some questions: - The tape was American VHS format because Sean had just moved from Fairfax, Virginia to Germany. - As I said before, It's been several years since watching this tape and I'm sorry if some of my recollection sucks. I just remember some kid getting cracked in the skull with a skull and then hell breaking loose (maybe this was the big pileup from the compilation??). Maybe it was Jerry who used his guitar on that kid's head, maybe it was Glenn using Jerry's guitar. I just assumed it was Glenn from all of the posts concerning his quick temper. Again - SORRY for the confusion. - If only 3 European shows exist, chances are this was an American show because I'm sure between all of you bootleg collectors out there, you've seen those three shows. Man, this really sucks because I wanted to get a hold of that tape BAD, if nothing else but to restore my peace of mind and answer all of these questions. Sorry I let you guys down. Also, while I was at home, I was going through all of my old Misfits albums and 45's seeing if I had any of the valued gems you collectors described and while I had quite a few valuable ones, I came across some that I have never seen described here in the Bible. This is probably because they were printed in Germany. In particular, I have this Wolfsblood/Earth A.D. 12" that has the Wolfsblood cover art on front, the Earth AD cover art shrunken on the back with the track listing on the right hand side. It was pressed by Agressive Rock Produktion. Is this run of the mill, a collector's item, or just a nice bootleg? It's plain old black vinyl - nothing special. Also, I have an Evilive record that is the same as my American one but only the color of the lettering is different. It was also pressed in Germany. Misfits Bible, Number 48 Tuesday, January 17th 1995 Today's Topics: Misfits Interview from Flipside #36 TH' LATEST INSTALMENT misfits A Theory kardz Glenn = Wolverine can'tspeak re: horror punk conventions, etc. Samhain Last Gasp ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" Subject: Misfits Interview from Flipside #36 Date: Thu, 12 Jan 95 15:15:00 est Misfits Interview from FLIPSIDE #36: (EVB note here - this interview concerns the infamous incident in which Doyle hit a kid over the head with his guitar at a San Francisco gig. I now own said guitar and can say that he must have hit hard 'cause a large chunk is missing out of the bottom if it & the neck is broken!) ***************************************************************************** (by Al Flipside) OK, all you people out there bitching about how fucked the Misfits are - but do you bother to ask their side of the story? Nooooooo, you just kick them when they're down like the mindless geeks you pretend to be so against. Shit, haven't you ever been pissed off! It's not the first time someone ever hit you with a guitar, like when Sid did it it was cool, right? Well here's a chat with the Misfits on that particular subject. If you are the kid who got hit, we'd like to hear your side of the story, but that's all - no more eye witness accounts because that's just stirring up the mud. Al: So what happened that night? Glenn: Well basically it's just that.... that... it got really out of hand. For ALL the bands on the bill. They were throwing beer cans at us, and our drummer jumped into the audience and a lot of kids jumped on top of him. It was either break it up or fuck our tour, so you know, that was the course we took. Al: And there was an el Cabong, was that really necessary? Glenn: Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't, what would anybody else do in that situation? It's a split second thing. That whole situation was fucked. We did the whole country and we come here and they think it's the coolest thing to throw beer cans. it happened to all the bands, Fear went up there and got a lot of shit, you know, we don't take that kind of shit. We don't care what anybody else thinks, it's just what we do, if we don't want anybody throwing shit at us that's it, fine, what do I give two fucks if that makes us rock art or something, we don't care. Well they say it's not that we like you or not but here in Frisco we throw beercans at everybody, well fuck you. Not empty beer cans either, that's still fucked, but full ones. Al: Doyle (Doyle did the deed), what was that particular doing? Doyle: He was fucking with us that's all. Earl (from Saccharine Trust who saw the incident): There were a lot of people scrambling when Googy was in the audience, we didn't know if he was getting beat-up or what then crassshhh! and that was it. Glenn: He (Googy) was going down, there were just like fists all over we did get a lot of support after the gig, no matter what you read in all the yellow journalist magazines, there were just like 20-25 assholes who wanted to fuck with us, who wanted to fuck with anybody that night. They fucked with the other bands and the other bands just did their set, fine. Now if Googy didn't jump in, but Googy did jump in because he got pissed off at some beer can and it was not cool enough to have just that one person fight him, a little riot had to develop. Al: Well that kid was an instigator... Doyle: Fuck he was the one that started it.... (garbled).... Glenn: There's a lot of shit that goes with it, with that contingent, like rumors that we raped a 13 year old girl at gun point, all this other bullshit.... All: IS there still a lawsuit against you guys? Glenn: No, I talked to someone about it last night and they said the lady was just forgetting it. If anything did happen we might have to pay for the hospital bills but even then they have to sue the club first. The guy who just put us on at Florentine, (Wes) told us that they have to sue him. And they don't really have a case because the kid was provoking the band by throwing beer cans. I forget what the law term is called, but anyway it's old shit. We've only gotten two bad letters about it, the rest have been more T shirt orders. A lot of guys hit people in the head with guitars it's just that night - I'm not saying it's cool to hit people with guitars - we were just singled out for it. I mean Johnny Thunders killed somebody with his guitar, and Flipper, Frisco's heart throb had just hit somebody with a guitar just before we got there. I don't know why we were singled out, maybe it's because we're from N.Y. saying "it smells of record company" when we give out buttons and shit we pay for that ourselves, we paint our amps, we pay for that, WHAT record company? Slash hasn't done nothing for us but put the album out, we recorded it, it's bullshit. Al: I guess you saw that cartoon in Maximum Rock and Roll. Doyle: I thought it was cool. Glenn: Yeah, at least we got dicks instead of cunts ya know! Al: OK, enough, hey Robo!! How do you like the Misfits? Robo: Great band, really good band. I'm really glad I'm in it. Al: That's it. Robo: That's it. Al: Are you gonna grow a Devil Lock? Robo: Well if it grows it grows! Al: Are they different from Black Flag? Robo: A bit yeah. Al: Like how? Robo: Song wise, but it's still energy... Al: No more break neck touring.... Robo: Well we haven't done too much heavy touring YET, but we plan to. At this point we have to start touring to survive. Doyle: Yeah, everybody now is not working. Glenn: This is like our first big tour where we don't just hit one region and then go home. Tell all the fiend club members that the live ep will be out really soon, soon as we get back we'll have some money. Al: How many in the fiend club? Glenn: Last time you said 100 and it was like 500, and there's a lot more now so it's getting hectic - that's another thing, I don't know who hates us in Frisco cause all we get is t-shirt orders! Al: Is Robo doing good? Glenn: Oh yeah! Except "Robo, four beats instead of three!" laughter Al: Most drummers are never even noticed, but Robo is like... Glenn: We played in D.C. before Robo and this kid jumps up on the stage and opens his jacket and his shirt says "Robo is God" and then he jumps down! (laughter and hysteria, Robo turns red) Al: Why Robo why? Robo: I don't know. There's a Robo fan club in uh Lansing! (more laughter) Glenn: It's his shorts. We never even thought of getting Robo as a drummer, Black Flag had suggested it but I thought he gave up drumming. Then one day I get this phone call "Waas goeing ahn" (more laughter). So we flew him out and that was it, it's working out good. (The rest of this interview was talk about George Germain - which is quite a long story - you would have to ask the Misfits) ************************************************************************** few comments on #47 - Brent Eyestone - the German "Wolfsblood/Earth AD" on Aggressive Rock Productions from Germany is legit and not a bootleg, as is the German 12" of "Evilive". They are pretty collectible - I've seen them going for anywhere from $30 - $75 each. They also did a CD release of "Earth AD" & "Evilive" both on one CD which is REALLY rare but worth searching for as it's the only CD release of "Evilive" Sorry ya couldn't track down that video but thanks for trying. Maybe somebody somewhere will have another copy that will turn up. CTernes - I have NO idea what Glenn's saying on "The Birthing". BUT when I asked him about the Samhain box set a few weeks ago he told me that it is STILL planned and will come out later in 1995 and that it will include a booklet with ALL the Samhain lyrics including the ones to Unholy Passion & Final Descent. So hopefully we'll know eventually... (Patience is a virtue) Goat (Angela) - Glad to finally know what set Glenn off at the Ritz. I was there too & saw him dive off the stage headfirst after that guy - at a later show I asked him what had happened and only told me that the guy had been "challenging" him. Volatile. Was out pricing computers & shit last night so that in the near future I can do all this madness legitimately from the privacy of my own abode rather than surreptitiously at work. Noticed one of the Hewlett Packard laser printers is called the "4p" which set me off laughing in the aisles at Best Buys. That's it, he named the album after his printer... That's it for now! Well i got this from a shop in England a little while before Christmas, and the tracklisting is as follows:- 1.Bloodfeast-live in 1985; 2.To Walk The Night-live in 1986; 3.Lords of the Left Hand-from unreleased Samhain IV; 4.Novembers' Fire-alternative album version. The live tracks are both of excellant soundboard type quality, and the studio tracks are also of very high quality sound-wise. The version of Lords of the Left Hand is completely different from that on the Final Descent LP. This rendition is much more aggressive and punky sounding, and sounds as if it would fit better on to the November Coming Fire LP. To my mind at least this is a much stronger version of the song than that on Final Descent, and the way it is played it bears a slight but nonetheless noticeable similarity to the much newer Brand New God cut from the latest Danzig record. The version of Novembers' Fire which is on the Last Gasp EP has the same music as the official album version but has a different vocal performance where Glenn gives the song a much moodier and darker feel. To my mind this is a damned fine EP and was well worth the 8 pounds I paid for it. Oh and before i forget the cover of the EP featues a black and white photo of Glenn on stage with Samhain in what looks like about 1986, while the back cover has another picture of someone's face (complete with Devilock) whom I presume to be Glenn. Well that's it for now, Regards, Stewart. ------------------------------------- To contribute to the next issue, please send email to: misfits@virginia.edu For more information, or for back issues, contact Mark Kennedy at: msk4m@watt.seas.virginia.edu The Misfits World Wide Web page is available at: http://watt.seas.virginia.edu/~msk4m/ The views expressed here are those of the individual authors only. He's definitely got the right heighth and bodily proportion as well as that "pissed at the world" streak made famous by Wolvie in the comics. Also, it was nice to read that you were into FAUST and Tim Vigil. Tim's work is among the select few that I am willing to buy or even look at. I wonder how many other people on the list are into Vigil? Well, I'm sure I'll post something soon. Take care everyone! -BRENT E. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jan 1995 17:18:47 -0400 (EST) From: stephen alan sisson Subject: WOLVERINE???? Ohhh man... If Glenn is in a movie playing Wolverine I am gonna be there howling with laughter all the way down the aisle until I get kicked out of the theater!!! I know he likes the hairy chops, but, come on! Wagner did it waaay before ANYONE ever got hooked on Wolverine!! If Glenn really wants to do a movie, I think a Wagner bio pic in the spirit of Immortal Beloved would be much more interesting. I hope this X-Men thing is all just a very silly rumor. It is rather tough to put together a good set with only 10 songs to choose from. On the Danzig I tour of course they played some Samhain and Misfits stuff, they had nothing else to play! Actually they have played some earlier stuff in more recent shows. On the HTGK I heard them play "When Death Had No Name" and on the Thrall/DSL tour they opened their encore with "London Dungeon". Also I was shocked to hear them play "Blood and Tears" also at that show but that is another story... I used to go off on how Nirvana wasn't punk and that "real" punk has almost vanished. BUT seeing as how they are calling Greenday and Offspring punk these days, and transforming punk into this capitalistic thing, Nirvana was as close to a 90s punk band as the rest of the world is ever going to hear. What could be more punk than splattering brain matter all over the furniture? =) (just a joke). /| __ ___ ___ __ |\ ******************************| -- -^ \_/ ^- -- |****************** * morrigu@uclink.berkeley.edu \ ---_ _--- / * * & ----^\| _>_<_ |/^---- Robert Flemming * * flemming@ocf.berkeley.edu / --- / \ --- \ * ************************************\__/| -^- |\__/************************ \ MMM / ------------------------------ From: she Subject: stuff from last time Date: Wed, 18 Jan 95 0:08:37 EST Doug did this: > I played "can'tspeak" > backwards, and discovered that it is "let it be captured" backwards, and it > sounds almost exactly the same (minus the vocals). Subject: Interview with Danzig EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH GLENN DANZIG by Andreas Veneris, October 1994 ---- 'First. This is not a rock record. It does not sound like anything I have done previously. Some people won't get it. That's ok. I'm used to that. But for those who will understand and appreciate the true power and majesty contained within, may this take you to someplace you have never been. But have always longed to be' Glenn Danzig 4/92 (from 'Black Aria' album inner notes) I first met Glenn in September 1990. It was a Slayer 'Seasons in the Abyss' pre-release Def American party but the main guests were in NY for an in-store. At these events, people (i.e. journalists, label representatives and groupies that ... find their way there) prefer to enjoy the food and say that the album is good. The album was indeed good. Suddenly, the fuss of 80+ people eating, chatting, dating, and gossipping stopped. I really wondered what happened, "it is Glenn Danzig who entered the hall" they told me. The presense of a really short, but physically impressive man, brought an uncomfortable and unpredicatle pause to the small-talk party conversations. He kindly greeted some people, smiled to all of them the same way, and soon after left the same way he came. The party went on. Hollywood is a strange place. No bar is open after 2 in the morning, a reason why it's full of after-2am parties. It was Halloween '92, I remember, and I was invited to a dozen of them. I was faced with a dilemma, should I ditch my tickets to the Danzig show in Irvine Meadows, a close to two hours drive south of LA? Who would go to a show that far away on a beautiful Halloween night? Now, two years later, I consider myself lucky to have been blessed with such hindsight. Not only was the 12,000+ open-air amphitheatre sold out, not only the crowd there went nuts, but it was one of the best shows the band ever performed transforming that night to a real... hell-oween event! Andreas Veneris: No...it won't be published in any British magazine. Why such an antipathy for English publications? Glenn Danzig: They're scum..ha-ha (slowly, with an ironic tone in his laughter). AV: Hmmm....well, I sometimes think that English people hate the fact they once ruled the world and also gave it so many great bands, two things they no longer do. GD:... AV: Well...sometimes they go even further, trying to slander what other people are doing, but this does not mean progression from their side... GD: Yes, exactly, that's why. AV: You get my word on that, although Metaverse is worldwide and I cannot do anything about that! Anyways, I've heard you're out for a new drummer, is that right? GD: That's correct. AV: What hapenned to Chuck Biscuits, who was an original member of the band? GD: He left us in the middle of the tour with Metallica. Then he wanted to come back, he asked for more money, and he wouldn't sign anything saying he wouldn't do drugs while being in the band, so... AV: That's part of the price you pay when you have a commercial breakthrough like the one last year with the 'Mother' video. GD: I very much think so. AV: Do you think that your life has changed a lot since last year's success of 'Mother' (first Danzig cut which received huge MTV-play ever!). GD: Drummers are always kind of a problem, to begin with. Samhain had two different drummers, Misfits had six different drummers...I don't know what it is this thing with drummers. That's what have changed, and me, Eerie (Von, bass) and John (Christ, guitars) are a little bit more closer all because of that Chuck thing AV: You have your fourth album coming out very soon, any personal favourites? GD: "Can't Speak", "Going Down to Die", "Bringer of Death", I like the stuff in there... AV: What's this track whose title does not appear in the track listing? The very last one, the Psalm with the Church organ (which by the way is numbered as track '66' on the CD!), that's what I'm speaking about. GD: It's a hidden track, that's what it is. Danzig has been repeatedly accused being a Satanist. Much of his lyrical context or infernal musical appearence has been the cause that his video clips refused airplay. I guess a hidden track will provide enough space for new rumours. AV: Do you have any title for it? GD: Yes, I call it 'Invocation' AV: You also had a classical album released in late 1992, 'Black Aria', do you listen to a lot of classical music, and which composer in particular? GD: I like the heavier classical stuff. My favorite composer is Wagner, I listen to a lot of Wagner, but that's about it, I really don't listen to the 'lighter' classical stuff. Commercial success is a two edge sword. History is full of examples of promising bands having a hit and radically change their attitude, music, and appearance. Sometimes it works, most of the times they disappear. The success of 'Mother', a song borrowed from his debut release in 1988 recorded live in Irvine Meadows, Halloween'92, gave Danzig a place in the cover of magazines as Rolling Stone and Musician. It would be nice to see how much all that have really influenced and directed the band at the dawn of 1994. AV: Congratulations on the new album. My impression is that 'Danzig 4' would sound the way it does regardless the commercial success of 'Mother' a year ago. GD: This is a nice observation. The album was written before the success of 'Mother'. The video didn't take big gear until Xmas 93 and by that time we started recording the new album. All stuff was already written before that, and the release was delayed because of the Metallica tour this summer. The commercial success didn't have any impact on the music of the album. Misfits, the first band Glenn gave his voice to (late 70s), is a long gone hardcore legend. Soon after they seized to exist Glenn formed Samhain. The early hardcore performances vanished in melodic, mourning and gothic heavy rhythms, accompanied with seductive vocals and psychologically intruding lyrics. The name was changed to Danzig when Rick Rubin, owner of Def American (now just American) Recordings, saw them live in New York and invited Glenn to join his label. "It was me and Eerie that started Samhain. We tried out many people before ending up with John and Chuck", he explained to me. Rubin also proposed the change of name to Danzig. The owner of Def American was very enthusiastic about the man called Glenn Danzig, music or personality, whatever was hidden behind that name. Since then, Rubin co-produced most of his work, including 'Danzig 4', their fourth studio full-length release. AV: Did you have any vision when you started Samhain (which became Danzig)? GD: Yes, I wanted to become more real, I wanted to depend a little more on musicianship. AV: Hardcore does not give you this opportunity? GD: Well, it depends on who you play with, but I wanted more than that. AV: At a first sight, lyrics seem away from reality. They truely have a stong metaphorical essence. How much does this support what you said before? GD: They do represent reality, but they must be interpented, and everybody can give them the interpentation he thinks. People have to think, that's what I want to be the effect of my music on music. AV: Is this dark, melancholic mood what represents you better? GD: Yes, it definitely does. AV: It has also been the reason you been labelled a 'Satanist', I guess... GD: ?! Yes....ha-ha (spontaneous, ironic) AV: Why are you laughing? GD: Because it's funny, because that's what MTV says to not playing my new video (from his new album, 'Until you call on the dark'). AV: Really? I don't watch MTV, I stopped watching MTV a while ago, I prefer to learn about new music from magazines I've chosen, press releases and ... listening! GD: Good for you.... 'What you see is what you get'. Glenn is not pretending to be something he is not. His character is dark, austere, seld-indulgant, and indeed imposing. He doesn't try to impress, he doesn't care less. He can be friendly if he believes you don't want to waste his time. He will treat you like a jerk if he thinks you treat yourself this way. I believe he has been mis-understood on many of the above. He is renowned for being a person who is hard to get along with. Back to the subject though... AV: Still I haven't got an answer, are you a Satanist? GD: Ahhhh..... AV: We can always define what Satanist might mean, if this will help answering the question. GD: Yes! What is a Satanist?...I would just say probably to some people because you like to rock the boat and when people say to you to do this I would say ...'no' (with a very sharp and real way). Maybe in that aspect, yeah. You know, the rebelliousness, the other stuff ...But if there were some Satanists, they would say I'm not a Satanist, so it really matters what definition you're giving to the term... AV: Are you religious? GD: Yes, I kind of have my own religion, my own beliefs, I don't know what it is, if there's a name for that. AV: How are interviews different, how are people around you different? I speak about the recently exposed ones. GD: Usually I don't talk to them ... ha-ha (once again this uncommon laughing)! AV: Have you been in 'strange' situations like that? GD: Yeah, but I decline to do interviews I think will go nowhere. In America I decline to speak to Circus, Spin and a few other magazines. I don't know what sense would it make speaking to them. AV: What do you expect from an interview? GD: I expect the journalist to know what the fuck he's talking about, and ... you know, to do a good interview. To make people read something new about me; the songs, the band, something you didn't read from somewhere else. Speaking on other publications, Glenn Danzig's voice and overall appearence has been strongly parallelized to that of Jim Morrison's. Every aspect of it: lyrically, musically and overall appearence. Songs as 'Godless', 'Sistinas' (Danzig 3), and 'Blood and Tears'(Danzig 2,'Lucifuge') may provide a strong basis for the second case above. AV: Many like to compare you with Jim Morrison. GD: Ha-ha-ha...I hear this all the time. What can I say? My name is Glenn Danzig and that's who I am. If you like it fine, if you don't ... it's once again fine with me. AV: What has been the importance of American Recording owner, Rick Rubin? How much has he influenced or/and directed your career ? GD: It has been more like a collaboration in a long way, I would say. Mostly in a business level. The label has to put out the records, but it is us that we go out on the road and play. We have support our albums, because we don't get any airplay or any MTV play really....Now we get airplay, but we still don't get MTV play... AV: It's funny how MTV can still change people's mind! GD: Yes, it is. AV: At the same time it's frightening because music is meant to be rebelious and to represent the individual, not something brainwashed on him... GD: That's what's supposed to be. This is the reason we have been on the road all that time. For the past six or seven years we've been doing it, going out and playing and creating a strong fan base. Those people liked us because they saw us. Then they call the radio stations and request (I remember that all Danzig material played on radio in early 90s was by request). Unfortunately we don't play that kissy...ass happy pop music, we do write love songs, but it all depends what your perception of love is, you know. AV: Do you think the extremicity of the lyrics is a reason you don't get any MTV play? GD: Extremicity of the lyrics? What is that extreme with 'How the Gods Kill'? What is so extreme with 'Dirty Black Summer', the second video of the previous album they refused to play? What's so extreme with 'Until you Call on the Dark' (the video of the new album, ed) or 'Can't Speak' (the next video of 'Danzig 4', ed). AV: Has your survival been that difficult? GD: Yes, it's been, and is still an on-going process. While speaking with Glenn, one thing that really found me not prepared to speak, is the fact that some of his stuff have political extensions. We didn't speak about any song in particular "...there're some political songs in my albums, but I don't want to be too much political. My approach to politics is from a more sociological point of view, what effects has on people. Other than that politics is a fucked up situation. Goverments are having wars, and then stop the wars without eliminating the other guy because they still want to do business with him". On the way, discussion came back to the music, and specifically the new album. AV: I think the music of the new album is much more atmospheric than any of your previous works. GD: More atmosperic yes, I agree with that. That's a direction I wanted to have. AV: It keeps this doomy, mystic, mourning and dark armosphere. Is this a representation of yourself? GD: Ha-ha-ha...yes, in a sense it's pretty much alike! AV: So how would you describe a regular Glenn Danzig day? I know that you don't hang out in LA much. GD: No, I don't. It's difficult to describe it (he laughs while his voice becomes more thinkful), I'm not that much depressed as they would probably think, I'm very much in the martial arts, that takes a lot of time, body building, reading literature,... I would say that my day is pretty full. AV: I guess with a new album out, your day should be pretty full with the band! What are current plans like? GD: We will have a new tour by November. We will start with a big show on Halloween in Irvine Meadows (that's where the "Thrall-Demonsweatlive" recording came two years ago including the live version of 'Mother'). AV: What about the remaining of the tour? GD: It will start by ealy November. It will be Type-O-Negative in the middle, with Godflesh opening. For people not familiar with the above bands, Type-O-Negative is another gothic-moody-heavy band, led by Pete Stele. Type-O-Negative's latest album ("Bloody Kisses", 1993, RoadRunner) received rave reviews and was characterized as a more industrial-heavy version of Danzig's work! Godflesh are a heavy, old 'n respected, industrial-metal band. AV: This is a pretty heavy line up! GD: Yes, it is. That's what we wanted to give to people, give them heavy, slow, and moody stuff. Not fake stuff. That's what they would come for, and they know they will enjoy it. I guarantee you it's going to be one of the heaviest tours ever from three bands who know what they're doing and what they do represent. Got me! When do you play Chicago?! ------------------------------ From: "Bouras, Elizabeth" Subject: Misfits Interview from "Flesh and Bones" fanzine Date: Wed, 18 Jan 95 10:13:00 est another old interview! ****************************************************************** Flesh and Bones talked to Glenn Danzig in the depths of his basement while watching "Dr. Butcher" and "Galaxy of Terror" F&B: The Misfits have been touring a lot lately. Is that the way? Glenn: It helps a lot. You can put out a record and sell a few thousand if you're lucky. But if you play in a lot of different places you're going to reach more people and get more of a response and you'll sell more records too. So bands say "uh, I don't want to make $. I don't care about that", sure but if you have a chance to make $ from the band, why not? It beats working a boring job. There's magazines like Maximum R&R ragging on bands because they get $ from playing, what do they want? Do they expect bands to tour across the country and play for nothing? I mean, who's going to pay for gas, the communist party of America or the Maximum R&R fund for struggling artists? And it's bullshit that we only play for large guarantees. Even when we do get a guarantee, it's nothing near what a band like the Dead Kennedys get. But if they can get that money from clubs, great, but they shouldn't put down other bands for trying to get guarantees. I'm sick of people saying what's right and wrong. What you should and shouldn't do. Do what you want. Personally I'd love to be rich, wouldn't you? F&B: Have you played in smaller places? Glenn: Oh sure, we played in Akron and had no idea how big the scene was there. We played for 30-40 people in this place that was the size of somebody's basement. But it's still the same gig. You still put on the same show... A lot of bands won't play in towns where there isn't a big scene. But in order for a scene to grow you have to have bands play there and get people interested. On our next tour we're playing Boise Idaho. I don't think any band has ever been up there, not even Black Flag. Where no band has gone before! If Robo and me had our way the band would constantly be on tour, maybe break for a month or two. But Jerry and Doyle have jobs and they'll have to keep working until the band can support itself. F&B: Any good shows recently? Glenn: The Boston show the other night was a real killer. It was a lot of fun. At one point there were like 100 people onstage and you couldn't move at all. We were trying to get people away from the power amps, Doyle was pinned against his amp, there were so many kids... Boston has a really unique scene, it's totally crazy. They hav e these big piles and everybody jumps on top of each other and piles on. It's so much fun you hav e to jump in. After a while with all the people it gets really wild but nobody gets hurt, well I haven't seen anybody get hurt bad at our shows. The Boston kids are into having fun, I supposed there's some politics filtered in but its basically fun and that's what's missing from a lot of scenes. F&B: Did you ever get bothered by rednecks on tour? Glenn: Oh yeah, well, I get bothered right around here. F&B: Did they ever try to run you out of town? Glenn: We got arrested in New Orleans in a cemetery, they said we were graverobbing. F&B: What were you doing? Glenn: Oh, just hanging around. F&B: In the 1970's you were labeled a punk band and now you're a hardcore band... Glenn: In the 1970's we were almost put into the punk category but people couldn't understand what we were doing, nobody knew what to make of us... We got in at the tail end of the punk movement, we were playing in the basement for a while and the punk bands gave us some motivation to finally go out and do something. So by the time we started playing out people were saying that we were too late and also we were too much. We took the ideals of punk and actually carried them out, we were what the punk bands said they were going to be, it was totally - all hell breaks loose - we would play and things would go wild. Tables flying and stuff. Club owners couldn't handle it and started banning us. It was really good when they started getting rid of tables and having space in front of the stage because people could go crazy and not fall over chairs. F&B: Has the hardcore movement helped? Glenn: More people are into the band now but we're still misunderstood especially by the political punks, they're looking at the music as "what can punk rock do to further my political beliefs?" and we're looking at it as "Yeah, let's have fun". F&B: Do you think that there's a different attitude among the kids that were into the music in the 1970's and today? Glenn: There's a big difference in the energy level between the bands and crowd. There's people diving off the stage and singing along and just going crazy... That's what's good about hardcore, the kids get involved and have an outlet for their aggression instead of just standing there like zombies and just watching the band they're actually taking part. F&B: Do you look at it as a form of positive violence instead of doing something like breaking a window? Glenn: I believe in violence. I'm a firm believer in any kind of violence. You have to realize that if you want to take your violence out on somebody that they're going to take it out on you. Sure you might get a wimp who'll stand there and get beat up but on the other hand you might get somebody who'll whip out a 6" blade and slit your stomach open. Violence has always existed and its not going to go away. This is a violent society.... also in the music, for the level of energy that a band like us puts out there's going to be a certain amount of violence. It's aggressive music to begin with, it's not laid back music. People are going to react to it. F&B: Do you think that war is acceptable? Glenn: Was is OK if it's justified. I think that there are things worth fighting for. Not everything can be settled peacefully. If everyone in the world was intelligent then things could be settled peacefully but unfortunately it's not that way. Eventually you have to resort to violence whether you like it or not. F&B: But could can try talking things over... Glenn: Oh of course I'm not advocating senseless violence, try and discuss the problem and if that doesn't work... nobody intelligent looks for fights but if you can't talk to somebody and reason things out then you'll have to stand up for yourself and fight. If you don't then you're not going to be alive very long... like say you own a house and somebody comes up and threatens to take all your possessions and rape your wife. What do you do? You can call the cops and by the time they come you might be missing a few fingers and have a slashed throat. How does that sound? Oh yeah, there's another thing I'd like to say with all this Nazi punk shit going on, I think that if communists are allowed to exist in this country then Nazis or KKK or any other group have a right to exist also. But whether they have a right to carry out their beliefs is another matter. I don't think that anybody should be allowed to interfere with other people's rights. But they should be allowed to exist. Anybody - Nazis, KKK, Black Panthers, Grey Panthers. And when it comes to their music, just go to their shows and set aside your differences and go crazy. You can whip out your Nazi armband now Jeff. F&B: What's coming out on vinyl? Glenn: "Evilive" is out, you have it right there in your hand. "Earth AD" will be out soon and Die Die my darling is on hold for a while until we get some $. Oh, and we have a new song called "Wolfsblood" which we're going to release in Germany too, which is cool because I always wanted to do a record like that. F&B: What about videos? Glenn: We did "Braineaters" and "Do you really want to hurt me" by Culture Club, we dressed Robo in a dress and, no, no. The Braineaters video has cow brains and lamb brains in a big bowl that Robo carries out. A lot of the Boston kids are in it - Springa from SSD, FU's, Jerry's Kids - and in the end, well, you'll see it, it's pretty funny, the brains go flying. We have a live video from our first Halloween show in 1979 and some shows at Clutch Cargo, Kalamazoo, Boston, we want to edit it together into a live documentary... We have some sick ideas for "Devil's Whorehouse" too... F&B: We're you supposed to be working on a movie soundtrack? Glenn: We're going to do a song for the soundtrack of "Bloodfeast 2" and I'm going to work on the soundtrack. F&B: Is the soundtrack weirder than the usual Misfits stuff? Glenn: Yeah, we have a song on the new album that is like "After Halloween 2", it's a lot sicker. I always like to outdo what we're done in the past which is hard, that's why we haven't done as many new songs lately. I'll write a lot of songs, but out of them all we'll only do one or two. F&B: Are you writing a lot of weirder stuff? Glenn: It's just that bands should go off the deep end with total experimental stuff because it might not be what the fans want. Some bands feel that they don't owe anything to their fans but they do, not that they should write the same kind of songs forever but you shouldn't loose sight of the people who are listening to the music. F&B: Are you going to do any more solo records? Glenn: I'm going to work on something new in a few months and this time I'll have a hand in producing it which I didn't last time... last time I did everything on the record and it was 2 Misfits songs that a friend wanted to see come out. The new record will actually have a band on it - Al from Reagan Youth, maybe Robo, and I might try to get Andy from the Necros to play guitar. F&B: What are some of your favorite movies? Glenn: Anything by David Cronenberg - "Rabid", "They Came from Within", "Brood", "Scanners", "Videodrome", and he's working on "Dead Zone" by Stephen King. F&B: There's this place that shows weird movies while you're eating dinner. Glenn: What's it called - The Gore Gore Diner? Wouldn't that be a cool place? They show splatter movies while you're eating bloody hamburgers? You'd be there every day, wouldn't you? Admit it! F&B: No well done, only rare. Glenn: Did you ever see "Diner of the Living Dead" on Fridays? It's so cool... They bring out arms and legs and the girl goes "Aaaaahhh!" "Evil Dead" is good, I'm waiting for a bunch of movies to come out - "Deadly Spawn". I hear that "Boogens" isn't going to be released in New York... (Glenn puts on "Galaxy of Terror" an d the credits come on) F&B: Oh no! Eddie Albert is in this movie? Glenn: Edward Albert - oh you mean the old Eddie Albert from Green Acres. It would be worth seeing him get his head split open. F&B: Yeah, did you ever see the episode of Outer Limits where Eddie Albert gets chased through the desert by killer tumbleweeds? wasn't that cool? Glenn: What? Most of the time the Outer Limits is cool. But that episode is so stupid! You liked it? The killer tumbleweeds are upon us. F&B: What about older movies? Glenn: Well, there's a lot there (points to lobby cards on the wall)... the one that I really want on video is "The She Creature" I haven't seen that since I was a kid, I wish they'd put it back in syndication... "Invasion of the Saucermen", "I was a Teenager Werewolf", "Teenage Frankenstein", all the A.I.P. stuff is classic, the monsters are so funny. F&B: What do you think about the debate that says that violence and gore is more effective if its happening off screen and left to the viewer's imagination? Glenn: I don't agree with that at all... I think that you can make a very scarey movie an d if you add gore in the right manner you can make it even scarier. "Evil Dead" is a good example of that, a lot of people put it down for being yet another horror film, but it's not a slasher flick, it may be a takeoff on "The Exorcist", "Night of the Living Dead" but it does have some very scarey moments. For me to flinch during a scene with all the movies I've seen it has to be effective. Most people who are really into horror are past the stage of actually being scared, so you watch the film and think "Now she's going into the bathroom, now he'll slit her throat" or "good scene, good FX" but I actually flinched once. F&B: Aren't there movie s that use gore just for the sake of using gore? Glenn: Sure, there's movies that use sex for sex and stupid comedy. Just look at "Three's Company", real television history is being made there every week... Just because there are movies that are bad and only put the gore in to gross you out doesn't mean that all movies that use gore are bad. The problem is that a lot of people aren't intelligent enough to decide what's good and bad, they spend 2 hours watching a movie and then look to the critics to see if it was good. F&B: What about movies that are so bad they're good? Glenn: "Horror of Party Beach", the uncut version is really funny, "Bloodfeast" (points to screen), watch this part, this monster grabs the guy and holds him down and pulls the top off his head and his brains pour out. F&B: When does Joannie Cunningham get her face blown apart? Glenn: That's coming up... the thing squeezes her and all her insides come out and her head explodes - BLOOSH! - and her eyeballs shoot at the screen, it's so cool! F&B: And Howard runs out with a hefty bag and scoops her up. Glenn: The first two seasons of "Happy Days" are great, Fonzie never talked, Ritchie an d Potsie are jerks and Ralph is a funny guy - my new idol is Bill Murray. F&B: I saw him in New York at Gem Spa buying cigars. Glenn: Was he talking like in "Caddyshack" in his demented Mister Magoo voice? He's so cool. Brian Hymned is practicing to be Bill Murray but I think that I have him beat. F&B: There used to be a lot of haunted houses in New Jersey but... Glenn: They're all gone... There used to be one down the street, this guy blew his brains out and they carted the body and condemned the building. They never cleaned up, we went in there and saw bloodstains on the floor. If you went there after dark you would run past! A lot of haunted houses are gone today because real estate agents don't care, they just plow them down and build on them, they don't have to live there. F&B: They build right over graveyards? Glenn: It happened at the school I went to, there's still all graveyards across the street, when they built the school they dug up all the coffins, bones were popping out, they didn't care so anybody that's planning on getting buried, you can imagine what's going to happen to you when there's a shortage of land. (Glenn describes how he cleans skulls, cutting and cleaning away the skin and muscle and insides and then boiling them on the stove) F&B: But doesn't it smell? Glenn: Oh yeah! F&B: What if some Chinese people walk by? Glenn: They'd probably say "Yum! Smells good! What's cooking?" There was a Chinese restaurant that got closed - they broke in and found all these dogs and cats hanging in the backroom. F&B: Uuummm.... *********************************************************************** Comments on Bible #48: DarkLo - I know Glenn has said that the reason he doesn't want to talk about the Misfits is because that's old history - he feel s that the magazines that were around at the time should have covered them back when they were around. I think it's his way of getting even for being largely ignored in the past... Gabriel Palczewski - Where did your friend hear that the Wolverine casting was official? Last I'd heard when I talked to Glenn (Dec 19, 1994) was that he'd been sent a script but hadn't even had a chance to read it (and as far as I know he's in Japan now on business for Verotik) Bloodboy - As far as horror conventions coming up on the east coast, Chiller Theater in New Jersey puts on two a year - one in May and the other around Halloween. I don't have a day for the May one yet but it's usually around the end of the month at Fairleigh Dickenson University in Hackensack. I'll post info when I get it (about a month or so before) since I'm on their mailing list. They usually advertise in collectors magazines like "Toy Shop" and maybe in Fangoria. (Fangoria always does a con the weekend after New Years in NYC but I never make it to that one since I'm too wiped out after Christmas.... ) Anyway, Jerry Only was at the last one in October (at the Meadowlands Hilton) & was all dressed in full Fiend attire passing out free Misfits stickers, guitar picks & Jerry posters that he was happy to sign. Got some pretty good pix of him too! The year before The Undead played at the same con too! So it's a good place for "Misfits sightings". Also very cool place to shop for model kits, toys, videos, movie posters etc etc. And my biggest news lately is that I FINALLY tracked down the actual alphabet that Glenn got those runes on the cover of "4p" from - it's from the German Inquisition and is illustrated in a book called "Magickal Alphabets" published by Samuel Weiser. (The author's name escapes me at the moment and the book is at home) But if anybody wants to see it I can xerox it for them. Another mystery solved - I just knew it wasn't like Glenn to just make something up if he could use something obscure... Looks like I've lost access to Usenet through Gopher so no more alt.music.danzig - damn.... if anybody here reads anything especially interesting in there please repost in the Bible! (or likewise pass along any questions to me). Within the next month or two I should get a PC at home & then look into internet access there so I can read it again... Re: the Danzig interview in last Bible... THERE! GOD DAMMIT! I WAS RIGHT!! I knew Glenny couldn't NOT enjoy Wagner. I feel vindicated as hell. If I had ever heard of him saying "Duhh.. who's Wagner?" I was going to ridicule him for the rest of my days. Nice as his voice can be in the studio, though, he probably hasn't got the throat stamina for performing in an opera. But it would still be neat to see him do something with the medium.. maybe produce it or something. Sidenote... I have had an idea bouncing in my head for some time about a "Punk rock opera"... there'd be a story and songs, but there'd also be a slam pit right in front of the stage, and the actors could jump into it once in a while, plus audience participation (i.e., heckling) could add to the atmosphere a lot. I just throw this idea out in hopes someone with lots of money will someday make one of these... i would sure as hell go to one. Oh, yeah- and Glenn has got a point about drummers. A good one is sure hard to find. I think some people just start playing drums because they know lots of bands have trouble finding one, thus they can be in several bands at once. You can always find somebody to play one or two gigs, but to find a guy who isn't a dickhead that you want to stick with is a chore, if not a practical impossibility. At least, that's been my experience. Cognito, ergo coglione! Teevie >;0) ------------------------------ From: CTernes@aol.com Date: Thu, 19 Jan 1995 17:56:20 -0500 Subject: I had to write! Robert, Who gives a flying fuck if it's not *real punk*. What exactly makes a band *real punk*. What, do you have to be dead like Sid and Stiv, or maybe really weird like Glenn, or just plain stupid like Jello. Why must everything have a certain moniker attached to it? Are we as a society that anal that everything must be filed away under the correct titles? Fuck that!! anyway you cut it up it's only rock 'n' roll. This new v. old stuff is really bullshi t. I didn't buy "Never mind the bullocks" because it was 'Punk Rock' , I bought it because I liked it. I bought Nirvana because I liked it, as I did with g.day, offspring and rage against the machine, not because I wanted to relive my youth listening to "New Punk" When you get down to it what is "Punk Rock" anyway? The way I see it Punk is just good rock 'n' roll, simple to play, full of energy, and having the inate ability to piss off ones elders when played at suitable volume. That my friend covers an awful lot of recorded music. As far as turning punk into this "capitalistic thing". Don't even think for one minute that if back in 1977 a record company said to Johnny Rotten "Jump and we'll give you 6 million beans" that he wouldn't have said, "excuse me, how high would you like me to jump Sir". Any one of those bands back then would have jumped all the way to the bank. As a matter of fact the Sex Pistols were created by the record company they were nothing more than drug addict bums, sid didn't even know how to play. They were the ultimate capitalistic invention. Bands DO NOT put out records to "remain true to their ideals", they put out records to make money, PERIOD. I've said this time and again but obviously we've got some real righteous punkers here, "WHO CARES IF THEY MAKE MONEY". There not selling out if their particular type of music is selling right now. Face it Danzig hasn't changed all that much since Samhain, and who should care if he did. You still buy the records don't you? I don't work for free why should anyone else. See completly inane dialog below: Rick Rubin: gee glenn I like this new album you put together I think we should promote it stronger than the others, the time is right for this. G. Danzig: No rick, don't promote it at all, that would be taking advantage of the market and not being true to punk. R.R.: Oh ok glenn I'll just rip up your contract then G.D.: that's okay I think I just want to make music so no one can hear it anyway. Let's get real people we are all here to get through life. If your lucky enoug h to have a job that you enjoy doing, and someone is willing to pay you a totally insane amount for doing it more power to you. btw: as far as offspring not being punk, I put my head through my living room wall listening to "bad habit" some sort of drunken mosh thing going on over here.--CG +---------------------------------------------------------+ |The Crimson Ghost |"God save the queen, from | | | facist regime" Johnny Rotten | || | | |"Castles made of sand melt into | |Hopatcong, NJ USA | the sea, eventually" Jimi Hendrix | +---------------------------------------------------------+ ------------------------------ From: Wandering Subject: Glenn's Name... Date: Thu, 19 Jan 1995 20:26:08 -0700 (MST) An intreging thought occured to me, upon finishing reading the most recent Misfits bible...what exactly is Glenn Danzig's real name? Danzig is, was, a thin body of water connecting the Artic Ocean and some sea or another, in Russia somewhere, i believe...the name has been changed, and it might actually be another type of geographic feature....but i know for certain that it did exist to the east of Finland, Norway, etc... Thus, while it is possible that Glenn Danzig IS his real name, the more i think about it, the more unlikely it seems...so, does anybody out there know what exactly his real name is, or is my suspecion entirely erronious? As i find more information about this place called "Danzig" i shall post it...and as with all things Glenn releases, no doubt this name too has some obscure meaning... What could be more punk than splattering brain matter all over > the furniture? =) (just a joke). I think Offspring and Green Day are punk. West coast punk. They seem to attract more to the skater scene out there. Thats where Green Day started and I have like 2 skater friends who were into the Offspring and Green Day and Penney Wise and all those bands before they hit it big. So they seem to get a rather large crowd there and they are what punk has become in the 90's I guesse. Nirvana tried to hold on to that weird factor of punk I guesse. Its rare that there is anymore of what was left in the 80's. Now Rancid is starting to get buzz apeal and around here Bad Religion is getting pretty good radio play. I never was/will be a huge fan of punk though I do like Green Day, Offspring, some Nirvana, Bad Religion and of course Misfits. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- To EVB: > Gabriel Palczewski - Where did your friend hear that the Wolverine casting > was official? Just a couple things to say that aren't really that interesting, but I thought I'd tell you anyway! First of all, I have a new addition to my Misfits collection. It's the much discussed double CD called "Demonomania Club." I got it at the record store where I work. I really like it. I think the recording is spectacular compared to some of the other boots I've heard. Anyway, just thought I'd share. Secondly, to Elizabeth, you are a very popular person! I was flipping through the February 95 edition of "Maximum Rock & Roll", and in the classified section was a want ad from a guy in Germany (I think). Anyway, he was requesting Misfits merchandise, and at the end of the add it said "PS-E. Bouras PLEASE respond". I thought that was pretty cool, so I thought I'd let you know. You might want to check it out (if you haven't already) because the add sounded kinda desperate. Well, as I said before, not much to say, but I said it all. So see ya all next issue! I've really enjoyed reading all of them. I would rather hear Glenn talk about the Misfits while he was in them than now, anyway. It is completely understandable that he doesn't want to talk much about them now. Most musicians don't like to talk much about their former bands, especially when they have moved on to more suitable forms of music to match their growing talent and experience. The Misfits were a really successful band and they obviously made some very important contributions. But the music was not very complicated and I think a lot of the fun Glenn had was related to crowd reaction and participation. There comes a time in a musician's evolution talent-wise when they need to start playing music that stretches the limits of their abilities. They need to play music that they are capable of playing and as you become a better musician you are capable of playing more complicated music. I think Glenn has retained the same type of attitude and feeling in his music throughout his career, but not all of the projects he was involved in are going to appeal to everyone. bloodboy ------------------------------ From: pbright@ibm.net Date: Wed, 18 Jan 95 17:02:48 Subject: Re: Hey Lizzie Bat & Co. He thinks Lobo is much cooler (and the Simon Bisley art sure don't hurt there either - Glenn is a big time Bisley collector!) Anyway, what he told me in Seattle was that 20th Century Fox HAD given him a script for the X-Men movie but he hadn't read it yet to see if it was any good. But then he'd heard that another studio was thinking of a Lobo movie & if that happened he'd much rather play Lobo (of course I don't know if they asked but that's what he said). Mind you that was a month ago & I prolly won't talk to him again for a while yet so I can't offer any updates. (Of course who knows if any of this will happen. I don't think he's got any acting experience, but then how much would you need for either of those characters?) Love Tim Vigil's work! Didja catch the Danzig appearance/quote in Act 9 of FAUST?? Also did you see the cool "Little Whip" shirt Tim designed for the last tour? He's working on a Little Whip story to appear in VEROTIKA #5 and also some Satanika and Death dealer pin ups to appear in those Verotik titles. There's also a good possibility that when Faust is finally finished Verotik will collect it into a trade paperback in color (as they've got better resources for that sorta stuff than Rebel Studios). Ssisson - Hey, I like the idea of a Wagner biopic ala Immortal Beloved even better. I know Glenn loves Wagner. (I always think of Wagner as heavy metal for the nineteenth century anyway - I mean think about it, if you'd been born a hundred years earlier what would YOU be listening to?)
