WWW Page update ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 9 May 1995 13:40:59 -0500 From: bloodboy Subject: shirts First of all thanks to djacobs for posting the pamphlet about the Black Panthers. This issue ranks up there in importance with the wrongful imprisonment of Leonard Peltier in terms of our wonderful government (read: police state) and its fascist bullshit. I urge everyone who cares about..ahem..LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR *ALL* (not just white bread conservative republican fuckheads) to support imprisoned Panthers as well as Leonard Peltier. But enough ranting and raving. Second and finally, I'd like to address this issue of shirts and their seemingly overwhelming cost. You don't have to buy the shirt! You are essentially paying the band to let you give them free advertising, anyway. If you don't like the price but still want a shirt, then fucking make one! It's pretty easy and you can customize it to your personal specifications. You can either silk screen (an extremely easy yet somewhat pricey method) or draw a shirt all by yourself! Permanent markers, ie. Sharpie(TM), are perfect for this and you can get blank T-shirts at a thrift store or department store for well under $5. Whether or not Jerry and Doyle's shirts cost $25 to make (which I personally doubt) is irrelevant when you consider how cheaply you can make them yourself. Kryst The Conqueror's EP "Deliver Us from Evil" is available at a local record shop for about $15. First I found the gold _Earth AD_ CD and now this! Bye bye paycheck! :) Also, about t-shirts... I found two EXCELLENT ones in my area. The first one has the _Legacy of Brutality_ cover on the front, with the "skeleton Glenn" on the back, and both sides have the Misfits logo (one colored in, one not). The other has the Samhain skull/logo and the _Initium_ cover on the front, with what APPEARS to be an original variation on the _Die Die..._ cover art on the back! (The girl is holding five playing cards, four are Aces and the fifth is a tarot-like "Death" card), with that same Samhain logo and skull. Both are black, 100% cotton and XL. The Samhain one appears to be readily available (they had quite a few in stock), but the _Legacy_ one was the last/only one there. However, I BELIEVE it is available through cdnow.com. I paid ~$15 for both of these, as well as an Amorphis shirt (if anyone cares) and I am more than satisfied. They are both in full color (or as much as is called for) and very high quality. I also found a negative of "the skull" in my school's graphic arts department and I will be screening and pressing a few shirts with it, as well as some of the GIFs available on Mark's WWW page. I agree about the black panther stuff. While I agree with the wrongness of political activists being imprisoned, I also agree with the fact that the post was off-topic. Take it to an appropriate forum, please. Thank you. In my opinion, and that of others I know, the Misfits are not punk, not in the true sense of the word, like the Sex Pistols or the Clash. Of course, lyrics like these are not exactly the normal love song fare, and I suppose that is a sort of rebellion against the establishment. Even more creative lyric writers like Led Zeppelin or Sabbath never made the foray into lyrics involving homicide-promoting mothers, horror movies, and of course, martians. Just like the "true" punk, it was stripped down, hard, furious, melodic, and very much against the huge stadium acts who always talked to the crowd and tuned onstage. Johnny Ramone said, "I used to _hate_ it when bands would tak to the audience--tell me to get off my chair and clap my hands." Hence, the 1-2-3-4! thing which the Ramones did and the Misfits adopted. So, in essence, they are punk, without being literally punk. Is it me or is there not nearly enough SamHain stuff out there? As far as boots, interviews, even material...I always find myself wanting MORE MORE MORE--(Iron Maiden "From Here To Eternity") Anyways, I'm sure a lot of you feel this way, so I'd like to share this article I recently found. It's from Flipside #45, and I hope you guys dig it! I apologize for any type-os on my part. SAMHAIN SamHain may be a new band to some, but the characters in this band have acheived legendary status to others. First and most noteworthy is lead singer, songwriter, guitarist Glenn Danzig. A former founding member of the infamous Misfits, and head of Plan 9 records (Misfits and Samhain label). Glenn is the mastermind at transforming the suspense and terror found in the best horror films, from splatter to a foggy crypt, into a personal musical and lyrical experience. Sure he carries a lot from the Misfits tradition, but that parting was more because of personal then musical reasons. On bass we know Eerie Von, who was best known for his drumming in Rosemary's Babies. They had an ep out on their own Gastly Records. The ep shows why Eerie first in Samhain so perfectly, check out titles like "Blood Lust" "Let's Molest" "Sanctioned Violence" etc.... Steve Zing is Samhain's drummer, before that he was an original member of Mourning Noise, a NJ band who had one single out titled "Mourning Noise", Damian plays guitar, and was also in Mourning Noise briefly. Al: Where did you dig up the name Samhain? Glenn: Samhain is the real halloween--the season of the dead. It sort of signifies the death of the Misfits, and the rise of Samhain. Samhain is something I personally was into and still am. Al: Did Samhain start out with Lyle and Brian of Minor Threat? Glenn: No, that's untrue. I started Samhain w/Eerie and worked Lyle in later. The band with Lyle and Brian never went past 2 try out rehearsals. Lyle played the first Samhain show and we never called him again. Al: Are you happy with the way things are going after a U.S. tour? Glenn: Personally, we all feel that things could always be better than they are no matter how good things get. On the first tour people obviously wanted to hear stuff off of Earth A.D. But on the second tour they came to see Samhain. Al: Does anyone yell for Rosemary's Babies songs? Eerie: In Chicago someone yelled out for "Let's Molest". Al: As far as lyrics go, I didn't notice a big change between Samhain over the Misfits... Glenn: Lyrically things have changed far more drastically than you've noticed. They lyrics are more challenging and severe than they've ever been. Al: How important do you think the stage look is in the overall picture? Eerie: At least 50% Steve: As much as the music. Glenn: At least as important as the music in our band. Al: With the subject matter that Samhain deals with, it seems it would be easy for you guys to slip a few pentagrams into your art work.... Glenn: Al, you asshole, why tag a Satanic tag on us if you don't know what you're talking about? Al: I'm just asking why not. Glenn: I do a lot of research into my subjects and many things people think are Satanic are not. Eerie: Rather than have to just think about our stuff it's easy to just lump it in with all the other crap. Al: Ok, then what do you think of bands like Motley Crue who do play up the Satanic imagery stuff? Glenn: The music is okay, except for the vocals, but their fake image had been done to death. Regardless of your image of us, we do not play up a Satanic imagery thing and we do not use pentagrams. Al: I don't think of you that way at all, I guess the difference is between real and staged horror? Glenn: Yes, that's as far as it goes. Al: No devilworshippers.... Glenn: No devilworshippers. Al: What do you think about god worshippers religion? Glenn: I hate organized religions. Eerie: Organized religion has too many rules.... Al: What are some of the things that have inspired recent songs? Glenn: Good and evil and the constant struggle between them. People's unwillingness to accept life and death. Al: I know you like horror flicks, what makes a good one in your eyes? Glenn: Blood and suspense. Al: Do you think that anti-female themes run through a lot of them? Glenn: No, I don't. Just as many men, if not more, are killed in gore flicks as women. Al: Who's your favorite director? Glenn: Cronenberg. Al: Why do you hate Stephen King so much? Glenn: Because he is lightweight when it comes to horror and I've read stories by other authors that he steals from. Al: What ever happened to the soundtrack you were doing for Bloodfeast 2? Glenn: I'm still doing the soundtrack to it--as soon as it gets into production. Al: Eerie, what ever happened to Rosemary's Babies? Eerie: Everyone lost interest but me. That's about the time Glenn and I formed Samhain. We both had the same problems with our bands. Al: Were you friends with the Misfits? Eerie: Yes we were friends. I went to school w/Doyle. Al: Did you handcolor all of the Rosemary's Babies singles covers? Eerie: Yes, I handcolored all 1000 of them. Al: Why did you move from the drums to bass? Eerie: I felt more of a showman and needed to be able to go off. I also play a little keyboards. Al: Have you ever robbed graves? Glenn: Yes! Al: Commited murder? Anonymous: Yes Al: Molested 10 year old girls? Glenn: No Al: Hacked the heads off of little girls and hung them on your wall? Glenn: No.... Al: Had visits from ghosts? Glenn: Yavol Al: Messed w/tarot cards (back of lp) or crystal balls? Glenn: No..... Al: Experienced haunted houses? Glenn: Yessir! Al: I'm assuming Glenn writes all of the lyrics? Glenn: Yes... Al: What do the rest of you think of his lyrics? Eerie: I've always admired his lyrics. Al: Will you write any lyrics in the future. Steve: No.... Al: What do you want to do w/Samhain? Steve: I'd like to be the first band to make it and not sell out. Eerie: I want to get on Carson. Glenn: I want to do what I want musically, lyrically--make a living and not prostitute my music. Al: Samhain is really into audience participation when you play live, do you ever feel like you sacrifice performance for that contact? Glenn: No, it's part of the live thing, but sometimes it gets hectic on stage (especially in L.A.) Al: Do you write any songs with catchy choruses for the sing along thing? Glenn: No, none of our songs are written purposely like that. For example, in "He-Who-Cannot-Be-Named" everyone sings the backup melody at our shows. You never know what people will pick up. Al: Tell us about the new record? Glenn: It's a 5 song 12 inch called "Unholy Passion". "Unholy Passion" is the first song I've written totally about sex, fucking, etc...The ep also includes some stuff we do live like "Moribund", "The Hungry End" and it also includes our version of "All Hell Breaks Loose". "I Am Misery" is about misery as an entity whose sole purpose and being is to fuck your life up by causing you personal grief and pain. Al: When you die what do you want your tombstone? Steve: I want to be put in a drawer, I don't want bugs and dirt all over me. Al: What do you want to be remembered for? Glenn aand Eerie: We want to be cremated. Glenn: It's too early in our lives to be remembered for anything. (Author's Note: This interview was awkward because it was done thru the post--but now that we have the basicas maybe I can do a good live interview in the near future) Hey all, I hope you dig it! And I hope this hasn't been posted before and I just forgot about it.... Gogos did all the classic 1960s covers for "Famous Monsters of Filmland" and is a top horror illustrator - he can probably charge a good pile of change for an original painting, especially one done to your specs. Even if they hired him on their settlement $$ from Glenn, they'd probably like to make some of that back. Finally, about t-shirts and Bloodboy's post, the best way to make homemade shirts is to get your hands on an Iron-on transfer pen (Sulky makes the best). These things run about $5.00, come in all colors, and all you have to do is draw your design on a piece of white typing paper (backwards) and iron it on the shirt. The ink is good for 3 separate shirts, but you can always go over the design on the paper again or re-trace it, whatever. Since I'm going to the post office everyday already with the audios and videos - if anybody really can't find one of these pens and wants one, send me some personal e-mail and we'll talk about getting one out to you. Did he contact the artist and properly license the use of the drawing, or did he just swipe it? There is no doubt that this is the exact same skull, down to the last line on the face. The picture on the cover has nothing to do with the story inside, in fact, the hero on the cover looks nothing at all like he does on the inside. The skull guy isn't a character or even a location in the story or anything. The story sucks too, just standard G rated comic book fantasy fare; the only notable thing about the whole series is the cover of this issue. If I remeber right, the only reason for this comic book was to promote a line of action figures. I scanned it and made a JPEG and I'd like to send it to our generous host for the web site, but crappy old AOL won't let me send an attatched file to an internet address. Is there anyone out there with an AOL account and a separate internet account who I could send the file to and pass it on? E-mail me if you can help. I've got some other cool pictures I could send, too, including one of the Doyle fan club ad that ran in RIP magazine. Is there a page at the web site for articles and interivews? I've only been to the web site a couple of times, but I dont' remember seeing one. If not that would be a cool addition. I've seen a couple of old articles typed up in the bible here and I hope that anyone else with old interviews will be willing to type them up and post them in here. I just dug out the Winter '89 issue of Flipside and there's an interview with Bobby Steele which mostly talks about the Misfits. I haven't read Bibles #31 - #59 yet, so if someone had already posted this, please let me know, otherwise I'll type it up and post it here in a week or so. Later! If anyone can help me out here I would be most apreciative. What type of chords do you think they are? Minor thirds with major 7ths and sus 13ths? I thought someone on the Bible went over the fact that unless it says so, all the TAB chords are "power" chords. Let's take "bullet" for example: D C F D. That means: fifth fret, A string, "power" chord. Then move your hand rather quickly (try not to slide) to the third fret. Once again, form a "power" chord. A little faster this time, move up to the eighth fret (don't slide!), A string and, that's right, another "power" chord. And return to D. Are you tuning to standard? Are you tuning at all? "london dungeon" is only the guitar; I haven't added the bass part yet. In fact, I kinda want someone else to do it. It's not that tough to figure out. "we are 138" only sounds funny because it's from a wobbly vinyl record. The chords and solo are correct. As are 90% of the TAB Rob and I have put on that page. Don't take it personally, Gabriel. I thought I'd just babble about the first time I was exposed to Danzig. I was in 6th grade and I watched (as well as videotaped) almost every headbangers ball. I remember seeing the video for Twist of Cain, and thinking "woh, these guys are totally evil, they scare me!". I think maybe the week after and for a while after, there were commercials by Def American advertising the new releases of Danzig "featuring Mother!" and Slayer's "new" South of Heaven. boy that was a long time ago. You know what, I'm almost positive back home I still have that commercial on tape. I wonder if that would be worth anything to anybody. I'd keep it if it was or wasn't. anyway, hearing Twist of Cain back then really attracted me to them. Then a month or so later I visited my best friend who lived in another town. He had Danzig 1, which had prompted him to find and buy Samhain Initium on Vinyl. So, I was actually exposed to Danzig and Samhain ever before Misfits. My very first exposure to Misfits was at a Metallica concert (sorry, but it's true) when they played Last Caress, which I hadn't heard before, and I've been hooked ever since. I think the first few Bibles talked about stuff like this, but if there's not much to talk about over the summer, let's hear some other good stories. Just about every song seems slowed down, and as if the EQ has been fooled with. It's ... weird. Maybe I'm just used to the raw brashness and speed of the material compiled on _hymns from hell_ but when I heard the version of Bullet on this CD I almost had to laugh. The differences aren't THAT noticeable, but they are definitely THERE. Anyone else notice this oddity? Anyway... I already asked Don about this, but I was wondering if you all think it would be a good deal to get a new copy of "Beware and the rest" on CD for $22, considering I already have all the available non-bootleg CD's as well as _Hymns from Hell_ and _Evilive_. I hope I didn't get bounced off of the list or something. Well here's that Flipside interview with Bobby Steele that I promised. These's also a great cover story on GWAR in this issue, and a really old picture of the Offspring. >From Flipside No. 58, Winter 1989 The Undead were interviewed at Raji's. Kirk: What's kept you from LA? Bobby: Money! And bands. The bands (Undead) gone through a lot of changes, these are the first guys worth taking the risk going on the road with. A lot of people, you know, don't want to do anything laid out, they don't want to give. Just take. Tim: We're seasoned vegetarians! Bobby: These guys are like... you know, pros! They know what's got to be done and they do it. Kirk: How long has this line up been together? Bobby: ...about four months now. Tony: Since May. Kirk: How long have you been on tour? Bobby: We've been in San Francisco about a week. Kirk: Your Gilman show was canceled? Bobby: No, that show didn't go down, we did the Covered Wagon instead and Sunday we were supposed to do a show at the Stone but we were in a car crash and ended up in the hospital instead. It was fucked! Tim: We did a sound check and came back- BOOM! Tony: We've got some great shots of him (Bobby) on a stretcher. Bobby: Had a collar on my neck/head taped down. Kirk: Are your tours always this exciting? Bobby: Yes! Kirk: So the last album you put out was just collection of singles? Bobby: Yeah, it was just singles and we added one extra cut on cassette that wasn't released. It's doing really good. It was released in Germany as an LP. They sold a couple of thousand copies out there, that they reported to us! They say it's out of print but we get mail all the time saying "it's in the stores" and shit. So they're just bullshitting us around but it's out and that's all I give a shit about. Tony: Now that there's a solid lineup we're going to put something out and tour like crazy. Do a lot of general areas, weeks at a time. Kirk: That stuff was pretty old, so you have new stuff? Bobby: Yeah! Lots! Tons! Kirk: You have a label interested? Bobby: It's a possibility! We have a label talking and they're supposed to come here tonight! As long as everybody gives a good reaction it will be good. Kirk: Oh, that was it, some guy told me that he saw you guys advertised as the Misfits. Tony: That wasn't our fault!! Kirk: I didn't think you guys would have anything to do with that. Bobby: That guy was going to cancel us. He called us last week and said he didn't want us coming because he talked to somebody that said the band sucked and didn't draw! So one person tells you that we suck and you listened to him. That one person is probably Glenn Danzig or Chris Lee (?). Tony: The guy was paranoid so he probably printed us as the Misfits just to draw. Bobby: We're opening for all, so what the fuck is he worried about? It's the funny thing about promoters, they will book some headlining act and give them $5000 bucks, then bring some other band to open for them and give them $100 and if it turns out bad, they blame it on the opening act! Kirk: What kind of respect do you get back in New York/New Jersey? Bobby: We get no respect! Tim: There's nobody to respect you back there anyways. Tony: We do better outside of where we live. Bobby: Outside New York. Once you get into New Jersey, Pennsylvania. Kirk: This line up has played a lot of shows? Tony: We've played a loooooooot of shows. We ain't fucking around. When I met Bobby, I finally met some one that was serious. Sand In The Face (his old band) were too busy smoking pot instead of licking stamps and shit and they were spacing. I always wanted to played hard. The guys in Newd (another side band), like Kake (?) from Sacred Denial... when he quit all I had was Gumby and he was a great character but he drinks too much and too much other shit.I need people that are serious. Those guys are fucking... Tim: I was in US Chaos and this is definitely serious. Kirk: So that's what kept you (Bobby) away... a serious line up? Bobby: Yeah. You know we've had interest from big labels, like Enigma and shit but the basic problem was the band wasn't getting out and playing enough. I think everything is going to work out real good. Kirk: What do you think of the Danzig stuff? Bobby: What I heard was good. I talked to a lot of people and everyone hates it. It's good, but it's not what you'd expect out of a ...Misfit. Kirk: Don't you think that it's absurd that people still follow him around? Bobby: When we're a better band, yeah! Kirk: ...when you guys play more rock and roll which is what made the Misfits what they were. Bobby: Well, I think I can say this, let him fucking sue me. I hope he does. He did everything to hold the Undead back and I say it because I can prove it. I've got interviews, Thrasher magazines, bootleg records where he says shit about me and they keep trying to stop the Undead and the thing is... he's afraid of this band. He knows this is a good band. He wastes too much time trying to fuck us over instead of concentrating on his own career. Kirk: I heard he taped over you guys (Misfits) cuts so he could have the copyrights. Bobby: No, he never stole anything. He just didn't pay us anything. (laughter) Stephanie (the electric lover): So you think that's why people don't go to see the Undead? Bobby: Well, we just couldn't get connected out here. That's basically the strategy he uses, where he would say, ok, you know the Undead could draw a crowd here, you know if you book the Misfits, Samhain, Danzig, whatever band it is at the time, you know you're going to get 'X' amount of people. If we hear the Undead played here, we don't play here! A lot of people (promoters) are afraid of that shit, a lot of people are afraid of angrying him. Weird Man: Can I talk to you? (So Bobby leaves for a second). Tony: So this is the mini Flipside remote unit? Kirk: Yeah. Why do you use a cane? (Bobby walks with a slight limp and uses a cool cane.) Bobby: It's a long story. Tony: Everybody is saying that the Misfits broke your legs! The last story I heard was that he tried to steal equipment from Jerry and... Bobby: Joey Image... Tony: ...and he broke your legs! (laughter) Bobby: And this is why Glenn Danzig is a real fucking pussy, cause he don't say shit about Jerry Only. He don't say shit about Joey Image, he don't say shit about Googy. Cause they're all big and physically capable of kicking the shit out of him. All he talks about is me cause I'm fucking crippled and he knows I'm not going to kick the piss out of him. That's how tuff Glenn Danzig is, he picks on cripples. Kirk: I guess he's the new Elvis. Tim: He's got pork chop sideburns!! Tony: Elvis with blood all over his face! Kirk: Tell us about your new songs. I know musically you've always been a rebel. Bobby: Yeah, it's just whatever comes to mind. We're not an art band, a political band, you know, we write songs about whatever the fuck hits us. We're not going to not write a love song cause we're a hard band. We like to play with images and fuck with peoples heads. We don't want people to know what to expect from us. We might end up picking up the London Philharmonic one day and cut a fuckin' record with them. We don't want to be predictable. Kirk: Is this a rock and roll band or a punk band or... Bobby: It's a punk rock and roll band... Last time we did an interview with Flipside (Pete), they totally twisted around the quotes I said. It was like: "Hey , I didn't say that!" Kirk: When was that? Bobby: Like in 1981. I said "I knew I wasn't going to be in the band that long. They were just waiting for Doyle to learn how to play guitar" and the way they put it is "they (Misfits) were keeping me until I learned how to play the guitar"!!! Kirk: Is that enough for a good story? Tony: Just make some stuff up. Kirk: I'll take a lot of pictures. I can't write so I print big pictures! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A couple of years ago, I remember seeing a Misfits poster at a local punk t-shirt store. If I remember right, it was a black & white poster advertising some date that the Misfits played. I know that one of the opening bands listed on the poster was the Beastie Boys... I think the other may have been the Necros. I think the picture was the Die Die My Darling cover... if not that, it was something else that you see often. Has anyone else seen this poster? I went to the place today to check it out, but they didn't have it there anymore. In the new issue of Seconds, there's a great interview with the new and improved political Glenn, including mention of an EP that might be out this summer with White Devil Rise. Here's an excerpt: Seconds: What's the story behind the song you wrote called "White Devil Rise"? Danzig: It's just a song I wrote about stuff people won't talk about. It's about a lot of stuff- Farrakhan, a bunch of things. Seconds: I heard it was supposed to be on 4p. Danzig: It was going to be originally, but then we had too many songs. We were going to do an EP this summer, but I don't know if that's happening yet. It's too important of a song to just give as a B side and it gets lost, so I'm waiting for the right thing to do with it. ------------------------------ From: GoatboyAK@aol.com Date: Sun, 21 May 1995 21:13:19 -0400 Subject: ummmm..glenn's lyrics..etc.. please post in da bible: ---------------------------------- a few comments/questions 1)i have a boot of the cough cool 7", after it says couch/cool, underneath it, it says --"b/w"--, what does this "b/w" mean? 2)does anyone have the "famous misfits of filmaland" boot? are these songs rare versions, or studio outtakes, they sound like regular album versions to me??on the back of the sleeve it reads "FROM THE FORTHCOMING ALBUM "LUCIFERS PENIS RISING" "....WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT, IS THIS STUPIDITY WRITTEN TO OCCUPY SPACE BY THE BOOTLEGGER, OR were these supposed to be on an album that was never released?? 3)who are the NECROS, i know the misfits mention them on some live shows, and send songs out to them...was glenn in them...did they ever release anything, ive never seen anything by them,,are they good? 4)what cover songs did the misfits ever do?? i know that on a bootleg "RETURN OF THE FLY" 7" i have, they cover "RISE ABOVE", have they ever covered any other songs...are there any on boot copies of shows?? 5)a hardcore group from kentucky called ENDPOINT, released a 7" called "IDIOTS" they did cover songs.i heard that they covered "attitude" ,(which i may add, my band is covering for EevilDon's comp. thing..)and on the cover of the 7" they are drenched in blood like the cover of the initium album, and where it would normaly say "SAMHAIN", it says either "ENDPOINT" or "IDIOTS", i tried to order it a while ago, because i am a fan of endpoit, but they were all out, and arent gonna repress it, oh welll looks like i gotta do some searchin" JUST FYI..... 5)speaking about glenn's odd lyrics in songs (--misfit bible 77 or 78) in the song bullet, everything is fine until he starts goin' crazy talkin bout his cum?? and "jacky" "slurpin it up"... ---"LIKE A DRY DESERT, SOAKING UP RAIN, SOAKIN UP SUN" --??????? 6)has there ever been any oficial or semi-official count of the # of bootlegs (misfit only) made??any one have an guess? 7)i have the first issue of SATANIKA, VEROTIK comics, signed by glenn, what is this worth? i also have a limited edition poster of SATANIKA, is it worth anything..i'll trade someone something for it, i really dont care that much about it!! playlist -------------- misfits, samhain, matallica, slayer, biohazard, green day, rancid, operation ivy, elements of need, mouthpiece, unbroken, bloodlet, carcass, earth crisis, shelter, youth of today, groundwork, endeavor,SAMSARA (--my band--), 10,000 maniacs, cranberries, pantera, ashes, morbid angel, stone temple pilots, nirvana, bad religion, 108,lifeline,snapcase,obituary,life of agony, quicksand, alice in chains, prong, and many many more!!!!! ------------------------------ From: Cyberpig2@aol.com Date: Mon, 22 May 1995 01:00:33 -0400 Subject: Kryst CD I'd hate to use this as a market, but with all the recent requests for the Kryst The Conquerer CD, and me selling it, I thought nobody would mind, if you're interested E-mail me, I'm also selling some other Danzig stuff like magazines, promos, etc. Later. Pretty much seen as a classic band, they released a bunch of stuff, mostly on Touch & Go (maybe all? I don't know...). I never really liked em that much, other people do, whatever. The singer is a big fat hair farming grunge rocker in Big Chief now, i saw him in Tower the other day, boy is he fat. Fat and famous, they were doing an autograph session, i just had to pick up blank tapes, and no, I didn't get anything autographed. 2) Good luck finding a copy of 'Idiots'. The original was a limited edition, and I don't know of any plans to repress it. If anyone really needs a copy, let me know, I'll dub it off for you. It's ok, nothing spectacular. Maybe it's just cos I don't really like Attitude as a song, you know Guns n Roses covered it, right? ;) 3) hey Mark, how about compiling all the Samhain, Misfits, and Undead interviews and putting them on the WWW page? They also coverd "CAn't Tell No One" by Negative Approach on 10/29/83 and "Blue Christmas" by Elvis on 12/20/78. They also used to cover "Search And Destroy" and "I've Got A Right" by Iggy Pop, although no recordings exist. "Rat Fink" is also a cover but they never did it live. > > 6)has there ever been any oficial or semi-official count of the # of bootlegs > (misfit only) made??any one have an guess? All known bootlegs are included in the discography on the WWW page that is mentioned in every issue. I haven't counted them, but they're all there if someone wants to. It's at least 50. Anyway fiends, does anybody want to buy my 'Beware' bootleg LP? It's got the same cover, only in green and white instead of black and white. I bought it as a space filler in my collection and am now tired of it.... $15 and it's yours. And I have news from Al Flipside, mastermind behind Flipside magazine, which had many articles about the Misfits back in the old days. The "Best Of Flipside Vinyl Fanzines" CD with Attitude (live 12/20/78) as well as an Undead demo and some other stuff will soon be reissued. Altogether the double CD collection has about 56 songs by 56 different bands. Also, issue #100 of Flipside will be another best of edition with tons of old artices and perhaps a CD-ROM of old issues... see you later fiends mark ------------------------------------- To contribute to the next issue, please send email to: misfits@virginia.edu For more information, or for back issues, contact Mark Kennedy at: msk4m@watt.seas.virginia.edu The Misfits World Wide Web page is located at: http://watt.seas.virginia.edu/~msk4m/ The Misfits mailing address is: The Misfits | P.O. First of all, did Kryst ever make any vinyl or just Cd's and tapes? If anyone has SEALED tapes or CD's or vinyl let me know. I have some rare (i think) interviews of Samhain in some zines. XXX #15 and Your Flesh #11. Danzig and the rest of the band discuss the Misfits and various things like that. If these interviews haven't been posted i will type them up. So let me know. Recently I wrote to Jerry Only and suprisingly enough he responded within a few days. When he wrote beck he enclosed a postcard that said that the Misfits were touring again in 1995, and were auditioning new singers and drummers. Has anyone heard when this will start or if they still plan on doing this? This may be old news and stuff, but i just started reading the Bible on issue #83 so don't get mad at me. Jerry also told me his son loves the Orlando Magic and especially Shaq. He mentioned that because i live in Orlando. He was supposed to fly down and go to a Magic game with me and Doyle. You can imagine how disapointed i was that it never fell through. Can you imagine just hanging out with Jerry and Doyle for the weekend?? Also i have to give myself a quick plug. It was released a couple years ago and I don't know whether they expected us to believe it's real or not. It was supposedly written by Abdul Alhazred (or Abd-Al Azrad), the mad Arab. The Ballantine version has a lot of Sumerian mythology. Probably, though, it was created by HP Lovecraft. In his version, it contained Cthulhu mythology, of course. I bought the thing because of the Misfits and because of Lovecraft. Really doubtful it's real...the "real" version and Lovecraft version don't match up at all. Who knows? All right everyone. I picked up this magazine...Live Wire. Here's an article from it. "Is That A Danzig In Your Pants Or Are You Just Happy To See Me?" Danzig 4 has been given the most dubious honor of being named Most Stolen CD in the country. Congrats, Glenn! Here's the evidence: Posted on American Recordings Internet Site, an estimated total number of units purloined from the nation's retailers range from 50,000 to 60,000 copies, according to American Recordings Bigwig Dave Garbarino. A normal rate of 1% stolen at retail is expected, but Danzig 4 was at an all time high of 15%. And why is that number so high. Could it be that Danzig 4 is Danzig's best CD of his entire career? That could be a possibilty, and the facat that so many Danzig fans have to own this mother at any cost. But it turns out there's another reason. Prior to the record's release, self-styled dark lord Glenn approved an environmentally sound, but unusual package design that was smaller than the customary CD box. Says Garbarino, "The Danzig CD package was easier to remove from the standard keepers (the plastic holders for the CD) which gave kids ample opportunity to steal it. Adds Beth Fath, Senior Buyer for Spec's Music in Miami, "You could easily fit 10 of them in your back pocket." Well, guess what? That's what Danzig's kleptomaniac fans did! At any rate, that's at least 50,000 more life forms checking out Danzig's latest. Live Wire would like to personally extend our congratulations to Glenn & the boys! Scott ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jun 1995 22:25:40 -0400 From: EVB Subject: the prodigal poster returns Hello at long last.... sorry you haven't heard from me in so very long! Spent nearly 3 weeks on the road following the Danzig/Marilyn Manson tour and then came home & crashed out (not exactly but was either at work putting in some extra hours to make off some of what I'd taken off or else asleep at home) So I am only NOW getting back to everybody & catching up on my e-mail - if you wrote me way back & haven't heard from me, write again as some of my mail might have gotten dumped on me! Yes, it's true I had an unfortunate night at the Pittsburgh show (April 30th) when the large and drunken lout next top me who'd evidently been pigging out on Sloppy Joe's all night spewed all over yours truly as reported by Sean M. in an earlier bible. Right in the middle of my favorite song of this set too ("Devil's Plaything") which only added insult to injury. Glenn saw this & had security pull me right out & I crawled off to the bathroom & pretty much stripped & washed everything out while I sent my faithful companion off with $20 to buy me a clean and dry T-shirt. One of the low points of the tour. Other low points: driving 500 miles from Knoxville to Panama City, FL: (thru the backroads of Alabama...never again!) only to find that the show there was cancelled. Drove on from there to Jacksonville for the next show to find out the club (sleazy beach club called Spinnakers) that had been booked had as SWIMMING POOL in front of the stage. Evidently Glenn told 'em the only way they would play there was if they drained the pool & used it as the pit (which would have been interesting but apparently the club owners didn't agree) Well, that and the car breaking down on the way back & needing about $500 in repairs, yikes, darn good thing I had plastic with me tho now it's maxxed to the hilt. At least it's all fixed now (brakes, wheel bearings, axle bearings & various other thingies that hold the wheel on) and we didn't miss any shows. (Made it to a total of 12 this tour, bringing my total now to 72 Danzig shows - sheesh! Hard to believe. I've probably seen 'em more than most of the folks that work for them or for that matter that's more shows than Joey's played at!) Didn't get to hang out with the guys as much this time around but did get to talk to Glenn & EV a few times. As for these planned Misfits releases - Glenn says they can't release the live Max's album without his OK & he won't approve it after hearing how they'd re-recorded the music & totally mangled it. (After hearing a tape of the Jerry & Doyle radio show where they played a few of these "alleged" live tracks I think it's best they stay buried!) Got to hang some with EV & meet his girlfriend who is a really nice gal - the two of them are adorable together! Glad to see 'em both so happy. EV isn't happy with this supposed fan club thing their manger has contracted out ("Danzig Dominion" - they were passing out flyers at a few of the shows I was at) as its basically just a merchandizing vehicle to sell shirts & shit thru the mail and the band doesn't have any input into that. There's some talk that whoever is doing that is also gonna start picking up the mail at the LA PO box, so if you want to write the band directly sent it to EV - here's the address: Eerie Von PO Box 9215 Lyndhurst, NJ 07071 He and his girlfriend are hopefully getting a computer in the near future so I've offered to help them out if they need any help getting set up. That would be very kool as then he could forward on all the latest news. BTW EV really likes the Jerry Only model & has ordered one himself! Got to hear something REALLY different at the Tampa show - for an encore they played "Rat Salad" off Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" album. Only the 2nd cover tune I've ever heard them do (after "Trouble" - not counting Misfits/Samhain that is) And even stranger, at the Orlando show (last night of the US tour) John wore an ORANGE RED shirt on stage. Whatever happened to the dress code?? My eyeballs nearly fell out! All in all I didn't have as much fun this time around as previous tours & I'm still kinda bummed over that. Is it just me or are the crowds getting WAY more violent than they used to be?? I used to stay up front for every show but this time I kept getting the shit pounded out of me & several times the band had me pulled out so I didn't want to make them worry too much & I'd bail out of the front after the Mansons finished their set at the later shows (since luckily their crowd isn't anywhere near as violent) I've got a few interesting scars now on my arms from getting pounded with spiked bracelets. Hope I'm just not getting too old for this shit... Anyway, the cool part of that is we ended up hanging out a lot with the guys from Marilyn Manson who are all very cool. Also it was great to see Mark Kennedy again at the Norfolk show - glad you could make it!!! Now I'm looking forward to the San Diego Comic Con (July 27-30 at the San Diego Convention Center) - got my plane ticket a few days ago & pre-registered for the con so I'm psyched! Verotik will have a booth there & Glenn's got two VERY special guests lined up who will be doing signings at his booth - Go Nagai, one of the biggest names in Japanese manga who is best known as the creator of DEVILMAN (which Verotik will begin publishing for its first US appearance this summer) and Simon Bisley who painted the "Thrall" cover & is one of the best known cover artists currently working in comics. Dying to meet both of them as they are two of my personal gods! If anybody is interested in going drop me a line if you need info on the con! Wanted to make a few comments on earlier issues: #79 Samhain666-had to laugh about your Lizard named Bobby - we used to have this finch that would always come to our bird feeder with feathers on his head that stuck up kinda like a 'hawk & missing part of one foot so we always called him Bobby. One day he flew away with his new girlfriend &it was the last we saw of him! Yannis - sheesh, shirts over there must be cheap! Over here I never see them for less than $20 at shows & often they are $23 if the venue demands a few bucks from each sale & the price is upped accordingly. If I'm REAL lucky I can find them in a store for $17 (plus sales tax of course which brings it right back up!) Mark - if you want more info on the Process Church & the Four P movement I found quite a lot of info in "the Encyclopedia of Serial Killers" and in another book called "Hunting Humans". (Yes, my leisure time reading is a bit on the macabre side...) #80 - Danzig4192 - too bad you didn't make it to the Charlotte show as I was looking for ya there! I didn't go to the Heroes signing since the owner (Shelton) is a dick & refuses to carry Verotik merchandise any other day of the year. I had a few words with him the day before about what a hypocrite he was & a few friends of mine made a point of embarrassing him in front of Glenn to the tune of "how come when I tried to special order these books you told me you refused to carry them in your store". hehehe! #82 CTernes - I've never heard of the band pouring hot wax on women. Sounds like the roadie was trying to have a little fun with her head. I hate to sound sexist but it might have a lot to do with what she was wearing - I'm female & I always wear T shirts & jeans & boots to shows & get treated with respect. But a lot of gals wear sleazy little outfits & aren't there just for the music if you get my drift, and many members of road crews, bands etc (and I'm not referring specifically to Danzig here but to many bands in general) believe that groupies are a fringe benefit and will take advantage of a situation when it is offered. HororHotel - yup, have that infamous Crystar Crystal Warrior #8, found in many quarter boxes! Even better is a rare golden age beauty I've got, "CHAMBER OF CHILLS #19" issued by Harvey Comics in 1953 sporting the x-act same cover later used on "Die Die My Darling" #83 - Goatboy - On the origin of RATFINK: Ratfink was a character designed in the 1950's by the artist Ed "Big Daddy" Roth who was very popular among the "hot rod" crowd customizing cars & drag racers. Ratfink spawned a slew of merchandising including numerous toys, model kits, T shirts, posters, prints etc, as well as the Alan Sherman song. Lately he's been making a bit of a comeback - a few years ago a new series of Ratfink toys were issues & some of the model kits have been reissued. Ed Roth does appearances at car shows too & is still out there hawking his artwork & merchandise. Satanika #1 is currently worth about $5. The poster isn't a limited edition - it's a promo item (there's a bit of a difference there as a limited edition is limited to a set amount of copies) #84 - Lord Valgamon - "Barbie Bites The Dust" was an offhand comment made in the 1979 interview in SLASH magazine that I typed up a few months ago: Jerry Throws a Barbie doll on the floor. "Oh Barbie. Our new single is "Barbie Bites the Dust" I want to be a party time girl, I'm party time boy" When Spiral Scratch did a Misfits article in 1988 or thereabouts they listed it as an unreleased track but I'm sure they got it from that article & were pretty confused... There is no such song, if they'd read the whole article they'd see the band were just joking around for the entire thing! Amused to read all the posts re: a Misfits bible convention. Boy did that snowball! I'm really in no position to host a big concvention - what I'd like to do would be to host in informal kinda get together at my place. Now the problem is I live in a rather small & scrammed apartment so I'm a little worried when folks start saying they'll drive in from all over because I don't have room to put up many people. (Literally there is a futon in the living room & space for maybe a couple of sleeping bags tho I'd give 1st preference to folks I already know. I'm up for a Saturday over the summer tho I'll be busy July 15 (White Zombie show at Merriweather!), 22 (possibly going to Fanex) & 29th (San Diego con). August is a big question mark until I get some concrete dates (Marilyn Manson might be touring... which means ROAD TRIP for yours truly!) So would early July be good for folks?? Post yeah or nay... otherwise if we started planning now we could all meet up for a big shin dig (say the halloween Chiller Theater Convention in NJ where the 'Fits might REALLY play??) -EVB ------------------------------------- To contribute to the next issue, please send email to: misfits@virginia.edu For more information, or for back issues, contact Mark Kennedy at: msk4m@watt.seas.virginia.edu The Misfits World Wide Web page is located at: http://watt.seas.virginia.edu/~msk4m/ The Misfits mailing address is: The Misfits | P.O. Eng" Subject: necronomicon? i dont know how this thread started (last issue), but the necronomicon was created by HP Lovecraft, and some people just wont believe it. Check out, there are 4 or 5 hardcover books of Lovecraft correspondence and in many letters he admits he invented the necronomicon so he can base his stories around it. some publishers have created their own necronomicons and you can buy those anywhere. oh and... misfits rules!!! Well I guess, reading EVB post, if Glenn wont allow the Xmas album to come out then I am sure it will come out somehow. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jun 1995 14:23:28 -0400 (EDT) From: Andrew Jerome Dempz Subject: taking evil seriously... Well, you asked, here's your answer. I said in the first place I didn't care to read any Danzig (the band) interviews because of the whole cheesy evil trip. I don't know about the rest of you, but I see a great difference between the tone of Misfits or Samhain interviews and Danzig ones. Back in the Misfits, they were a bunch of kids writing songs about horror movies and definately not taking it seriously (meaning they didn't think they were all evil interviewers didn't set the tone to make them seem evil, etc.). They were writing about movies, not "the true existence of evil". The reason I don't like the current Danzig lyrics and interviews (especially with Glenn himself, the John Christ interviews I 've read make him seem to be a little more grounded in reality) is because they seem to be taking the evil bit seriously. C'mon folks, this is rock n roll for Christ's sake, not theology. Glenn is from the New Jersey suburbs and the only "evil" thing to ever come out of that state is the stench it is famous for. Now, I don't think he takes the entire evuil trip completely sriously himself. S
