They get new stuff in a lot, but I'm wondering...does anyone know of any other real cool ones in the area? Or in the New England/New York area? The best one that I've come across so far was Taang! Records...though their prices were too high. They moved it to San Diego though (check it out if you live there). Now I seem to keep ending up at Second Coming Records on Mass. Ave in Harvard Square. I was talking to a kid whom I just met, and we got to talking about the Misfits, and about the aspects of the musicians, and when i mentioned Bobby Steele, he said that he saw in a magazine (Rip, or one like it) that Bobby Steele was dead. Also, He said that when he met Chuck Biscuits a few years back, and asked him about DOA, Circle Jerks, etc., Chuck also said that he was also in the Misfits very temporarily. Also, a comic book dealer said that at a convention, Glenn was looking for an exorcist because he had made a deal with a demon for success for danzig. Hohoho... pick up the July '95 issue of Details magazine (Which incidentally is their fifth annual music issue) and turn to page 60 for "Rock Solid - Glenn Danzig pumps up his volume," a fitness article in which Glenn explains his ENTIRE weekly workout schedule in over-excessive detail. (Gee... maybe that's why they call the magazine DETAILS?) :) Ha ha, I know, bad joke. Along with some really kooky pictures of our main man, I was most amused by the caption at the bottom of the page: "Glenn Danzig doesn't mind the pain." The first time I ever heard Danzig was on an old radio station called WVVX around here. I forgot what they called them, but they'd go for hours playing 3 songs in a row by bands (blocks?). Danzig was one of them....Lucifuge era....and I loved the band since. First concert was July 3, 1994. The last time they were in Chicago was the same day I had to go to a wedding (I was NOT pleased at all). I didn't care for the set, and since I owned no bootlegs at the time, I just assumed Danzig was a poor live band. Boy was I wrong! The set wasn't too bad, except during "Mother" a mosh pit/brawl started right behind me, and the incline of the lawn was so steep that if you were bumped you flew and hit concrete. I stayed safe, the girl I was with nearly got killed. This was also my first Misfits experience, Glenn came out and jammed on 3 songs with Metallica. A few jock assholes were actually booing during "London Dungeon", so for a bit of the song I couldn't hear too well, he did eventually shut up after the majority of the people were staring at him giving him the evil eye and such. Any of you Prodigy people remember the good old BB days when we'd post our guesses on the lyrics? I still laugh at "Green Hell" . Can anybody tell me what the Earth AD/Wolfsblood/Evilive cd (official German release by Agressive Rockproduktionen, came out in '91) sells for in the US????? CTernes: A song title which is shared by Suicidal and Danzig? Well, the only ST title that comes close is Possessed from the first album, but that's not quite the same as Possession, right? Anybody seen Glen E. Friedman's "Fuck You Heroes" photobook? It contains lots of cool skate, hardcore and rap pictures. There's Black Flag, Suicidal, Jello Biafra, Ice-T, Public Enemy etc. etc. Unfortunately no Misfits pictures, but you can't have it all. Just the other day I remembered something curious from my childhood days... Does anyone remember and old cartoon called Jem and the Holograms? It was a cartoon that was pretty much designed for girls about these two all female bands, Jem and the Holograms(good girls) and the other was the Misfits (bad girls). Since this was an 80's 'toon, all the music was pretty much sucky glam rock music, but nonetheless, the Misfits were always the band I rooted for sonce I liked the bad girl bit. All the girls had these wild purple and green hairspray cuts along with net stockings and little metal spikes and studs. Anyone think it's possible that maybe some wiseass purposely made a connection with our Misfits? -Psycho 78 ------------------------------ From: "Robinson, James Che" Date: Sat, 15 Jul 1995 22:03:16 GMT-5 Subject: Re: Misfits Bible, #91 ok the undead played in indpls on the 8th and well they need to rethink the tour. why you may ask. well the sounded like shit. i hate to say it but it is true.. and please take me off this mailing list ------------------------------ From: Burkhard Jaerisch Subject: BIBLE #100!! First off, a bit of news on Glenn's publishing company Verotik for those who are interested - managing editor Hart Fisher has been sacked, don't know why yet (maybe all the printing errors in Satanika #2) so hopefully this won't screw up their publishing schedule again when they were just beginning to get things out steadily! Steve Wardlaw (formerly of Tundra) is now in charge long distance from Massachusetts. At least we'll be spared Hart's pompous, self-inflated editorials from now on! I'd also advise against trying to order anything directly until they get things straightened out (I'm still waiting on the T-shirts I ordered a few months back...) I also hear that Death Dealer #1 should finally be shipped to the stores from the printer July 15th... Comments on Bible #89: Overall, I REALLY enjoyed everybody's responses to the whole "left hand" question - it was very informative! Warren A. Propst - other Satanic bands besides Deicide? How about Marilyn Manson (Reverend Manson was ordained in the Church of Satan by Anton LaVey) and the Electric Hellfire Club? Scott Cummings - agree on your recommendation on the Rollins book! I enjoyed that as well as all his other books (I actually like his writing a lot better than his music). For anybody with web access, Rollin's publishing Company 2.13.61 has a web site at: http://www.earthlink.net/~two1361/ HororHotel - thanks VERY much for posting the Danzig interview - I think that's the first time he's actually ever mentioned his first band Talus in print! CTernes - likewise thanks VERY much for the Misfits interview - one I didn't have!!!! RE: Bible #90: Cternes - definitely agree with ya on Lollapalooza. I went to the first one to see NIN & Janes Addiction (unfortunately missed Rollins due to the traffic jam ) & I had a miserable time between the heat, the sun & having to stand in line for 2 hours to buy tickets to exchange for overpriced bottles of water after I stood in another line for another hour and a half. It was really badly run & I swore up and down I'd never go again. (and of course I'm generally allergic to things like "sunlight", "sweltering summer heat" and "outside") Thanks for info on Samhain CD bootleg - 'tis news to me! Will have to keep an eye out for it. Goatboy - The Necronomicon was a fictional book frequently mentioned in the short stories of H.P. Lovecraft (early 20th century horror writer), said to be penned by "the mad Arab" Abdul Alhazared, which was full of spells to conjure up hideous ancient creatures referred to as "the great old ones". Many other writers latched on to Lovecraft's invention & referenced it in their own works (and added along similar invented tomes), especially those writers adding more stories to Lovecraft's "Cthulhu Mythos" tales as well as more gods to his hideous ancient pantheon. Today there are several versions claiming to be the "real" Necronomicon, one of which can even be found in chain bookstores like B.Dalton's! Nick Wojciechowski - "Last Caress" originally appeared on the British 12" "Beware" which came out in 1979 and also contains most of the songs that had been released on the "Bullet" and "Horror Business" singles in the USA in 78/79. Unfortunately this 12" is VERY rare and sought after, and when the original can be found it generally sells for at least $200. There are also several bootlegged vinyl versions of it on 7" & 12" format; one of the 12" boots is almost identical to the original (so I always strongly caution anybody looking to buy one of the originals to watch out for it!) . So unless you get extremely lucky or are prepared to shell out some serious bucks, you might want to consider looking for a boot of it instead. It's included on the CD "Beware and the Rest" which IMHO is the most useful Misfits CD bootleg collecting all the rare & pricey singles. CTernes - Hmm, I'm not real familiar with Suicidal but I like your contest idea. How's about a similar contest? I'll do up a cool tape (winners choice) OR a promo Satanika poster autographed by Glenn to the first person who can give me BOTH song titles shared by Danzig and the Sisters of Mercy! HororHotel - I'd always wondered about that, hmm, guess that explains the pix of gals wearing saddles and bridles in one of my Helmut Newton photography books (it was either "Sleepless Nights" or "White Women" - he's a fantastic photographer but kinda weird) Tony1013 - Glad ya enjoy the posts! As for tons of Grateful Dead fans adopting Misfits shirts - there's a possibility that maybe some of them they just like the imagery with all the skulls etc as the Dead have always used lots of skeletal designs. (In fact as I personally can't stand the Dead many is the time I've rued the fact that they had such great imagery) RE: Bible convention, well, there was never an actual con planned. I'd offered to host a smallish get-together (i.e. however many folks can cram in Liz's apartment for a few hours) but when I asked what would be good dates I got no response. Right now I'd suggest that maybe all interested folks start planning for a get together to coincide with the eventual new Misfits show (Halloween in NYC or thereabouts?) Warren A. Propst - good idea for a thread! Hmm, my first Misfits listening experience.... Probably around 1986 when I walked into Vinyl Ink Records & George was playing an early 7" (I'm sure it was "Three Hits from Hell") - I liked it & left because I knew their stuff was rare & pricey & I didn't want to get addicted (heheheheehee sez Liz however many thousands of bucks later) - I was already a HUGE Sisters of Mercy collector and spending all my $ on their stuff (some of those are as scarce as Misfits records!). Time passed, then when "Walk Among Us" was reissued I bought it right away, having heard it was a "classic". For whatever reason I played it once, it didn't grab me (too fast & didn't sound like what I'd heard before & I was probably in a mood) and I shelved it. Then came the life-changing experience. My friend Greg called me up after the first Danzig album came out and said "I know you hate metal but there's this album you have to hear. I'll send you a copy if you promise me you'll listen to it." I said OK & he sent me a tape of the 1st LP, cued up so that the first thing I heard was "Soul on Fire". And I was INSTANTLY hooked by that gorgeous deep dark voice that sucked me in like a moth drawn to the flame and left me hungry for more. (Funny aside on the tape he sent me - it was an extra from his friend Chris who kept buying more. After however many plays he claimed that "the evil wore off" so he'd buy a new copy!) Couldn't stop there; did some research & found out about Glenn's earlier bands and immediately scoured the stores for everything I could get by The Misfits and Samhain and pulled "Walk Among Us" back out & enjoyed it a lot more after a few spins. Back down at Vinyl Ink I realized the frightening truth - that many of the best Misfits 'tunes were only on their old 7"s, so I started buying 'em up as I could find them, and before ya knew it I'd mutated into one of those crazed collector fiends whose life wouldn't be complete until I had EVERYTHING! (I'm still a few items shy of completion but I'm working on it!). Looking back I'm glad II had something I could throw myself into so deeply at that point of my life as it was around then that my father committed suicide & my whole world turned upside down. At that lowest point it was my black sense of humor fueled by the 'Fits tunes that kept me sane and pulled me thru (and annoyed my remaining family to no end) Anyway, I missed seeing Danzig on their first tour because of the family bit. So I swore up and down I'd make up for lost time, and by the time they announced the Lucifuge tour I was determined to drive to "as many shows as I could possibly go to". So along with ultra-fiend Johnny Favorite a/k/a Jonathan Grimm we made it to 11 shows that summer & I made it to another 7 that fall. My first Danzig show was in July of 1990 at Bogart's in Cincinnati and completely blew me away.....and there have been 71 more since! Sorry if it's turned into the personal confessions of "Misfits Anonymous" but I figured some of ya might wanna hear it. Hope to hear how the rest of you first got into 'em!. Several more VERY long posts to follow as soon as I get a chance to type them up, my phone has been rining off the hook this week & I have a lot of new news direct from Bobby & Jerry! -EVB ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Jul 95 21:24:28 -0700 From: Gala Subject: sound file on Misfits Central 10.WAV : Has anybody figured out what this is? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jul 1995 10:08:21 -0100 From: "Jake Starr/ADAM WEST" Subject: Re: Misfits Bible, #91 --part_AC2FE7150001527F00000003 Content-Type: Text/Plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Disposition: Inline SO - The Undead are playing!!!! > > First show this Sunday (16th) night in Baltimore at Club Midnight (2549 > N. > Howard, between 25th & 26th), doors open at 6 PM i know! i saw the flyer for this show saturday when i was record shopping in Baltimore. unfortunately, i had a another engagement last nite so i missed the show. i'm surprised they're not playing dc, like the black cat. anyway, thanks for the tip! jake *************************** Jake Starr/ADAM WEST c/o Fandango Records 1805 T Street, NW #A Washington, DC 20009-7128 (202) 483-0065 eMAIL: jyas@loc.gov *************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jul 1995 19:56:28 -0400 From: EVB Subject: News on the Misfits!! More news to report for y'all (every relasted group checked in this week....); had a long talk with Jerry last Thursday so I've got a lot of exciting news on the Misfits to report: 1) They do have Dave Vanian coming in to see them & are really hoping this will work out (I am REALLY hoping it will - I think Vanian is a a great singer and has a GREAT stage presence - I've loved the Damned since the day their 1st import single of "New Rose" arrived in the record store I worked in back in high school, and plus he is FANTASTIC in concert!!!!) 2) A gig at the Limelight on Halloween is out tho as Type O Negative have it booked already - apparently the Misfits were offered a slot opening for Type O but naturally they'd rather headline, especially for their comeback! 3) First release will be the "Static Age" album on Halloween from Caroline. Basil Gogos has just finished the cover painting which is of Jerry getting struck by lightening, sounds cool. I'm so excited that they've gotten him to work for them -it's just so very appropriate to the whole "horror" feel that they've been able to get the very same artist that did so many of the fantastic "Famous monsters of Filmland" covers. (Anybody else here grow up on those? when I was a kid I used to eagerily scarf that up every month, along with "Eerie", "Creepy" and "Vampirella"!) Jerry was able to sit in & help out on the mastering so he was able to get exactly the sound he wanted on it. Hopefully I 'll be getting a tape of it from him very soon and I can give you guys a sneak peak review - I can't tell you how much I am looking forward to this! 4) Also they will be doing a 45 of "Teenagers" (Static Age version); on the B side instead of another track will be an etched skull in the vinyl. 5) They are working on a series of movie pilots, taking old B films & hosting them in the tradition of Zacherly; it would be a tongue in cheek kinda thing poking fun at them like Mystery Science Theater but instead will give lots of information on the films & cast, like what the folks involved did afterwards. They've got 3 films so far - The Crawling Eye, Horror Hotel and the Hideous Sun Demon (all good choices!!).. They will have guests on there including Basil Gogos & the director of Hideous Sun Demon who they are flying in from California. For a studio they have renovated a barn & turned it into a huge dungeon set, so they'll be filming in there. They are hoping to either get a network interested or syndicate on TV, if not they will release as a series of videotapes. 6) He's anxious to get on line - said Doyle's wife had just gotten a computer so could I tell him how to get on the net. I wrote him up some suggestions of various options & gave him instructions on how to join the Bible & find the web site and I stressed how many fans are involved, especially with the Bible & how eager they are for news so it would be FANTASTIC if he could actually join us & give info first hand. Wowza.... my head is spinning from all this..... Now my roomies are teasing me & when the phone rings they say "who is it, another Misfit"? -EVB I also have a MAJOR announcement to make next week, so please sit tight until the next bible. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jul 1995 19:40:58 -0400 From: EVB Subject: UNDEAD NEWS!!! Got a call out of the blue last Wednesday from Bobby Steele & was really happy to finally hear from him as it had been about a year and a half since I had. Heard what he'd been up to - he'd put the band on hold and had been engaged to a girl but unfortunately she left him so the wedding was off and he got the band back together (which is good for us fans at least who have been missing him and wondering what happened!) and he wanted to let me know that he'd be playing a few shows! So, as you might have guessed from the "special emergency broadcast" bible I asked Mark to send out in case anybody in the area was interested in going, they played on Saturday at Club Midnite in Baltimore. Met up there with a bunch of fiends including Mark Kenndy, Mike Priddy, James Lair & Jonathan Grim and a great time was had by all! Those of us that got there early got to sit in on the soundcheck as well which included "Where Eagles Dare" which sent goosebumps up my spine as I could feel that old Misfits magic working.... (And the set they played last night also included RATTFINK, Horror Business, I Turned Into a Martian and Last Caress! My one regret is that they didn't do "Slave to Fashion" which is my fav Undead tune.) Damn he is one helluva guitarist! They'll also b playing Wednesday the 19th in Lanaster PA - I'm not sure where yet but Bobby said he'd call me and give me directions so if anybody is interested in that e-mail me and I'll try to help! They will also be playing in New York City on the 29th at Brownies. (I've also got a friend of mine in Charlotte, NC trying to sent up a date or two down there - Bobby said he'd be interested if we could get a club down there interested! If that happens it will mean ROADTRIP!) He's got another side project he's working on as well called "Times Square" with a guy named Dave from a band called the Devil Dogs, and an ex-girlfriend named Jill who is apparently a pretty famous female boxer (?) who recently became the first woman to win the "Golden Gloves". He says it sounds like a cross between the Undead and the first Blondie album; 60's girl group sound wth hard edged guitar. He's interested in getting on-line as well; he's got a computer and a modem but not hooked to the 'net YET but hopefully soon! I brought him a print out of Mark Kennedy's Misfts book so he was able to go over that with Mark & add in some info and make some corrections; also gave him print outs of the last half dozen or so Bibles for some reading material! I encouraged him to join us; also hopefully very soon we'll be able to get his merchandise list up in the Bible and on Mark's web page since I know a lot of you have been having trouble finding Undead records. And yes, major bargain on the shirts there - only $10 (VERY pleasant surprize for me!!! OK OK I relent, there are some major indie bargains out there, plus I do feel better giving the $ directly to the artist so they get all the profits directly). - EVB ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jul 95 11:00:06 From: Andreas Viehoff Subject: Hello! Hi, this is my first contribution to the Bible: Ill start with a big "HELLO" from Duesseldorf in Germany. Who was it that asked for my first experience with Danzig/Misfits/Samhain?? Well, I guess it was around the time that Lucifuge was introduced and I saw that video for "Her black wings" on Headbangers Ball (or whatever it was called by then): It blew me away. From then on it was a question of 2 or 3 months to get a grip on whatever I could get on Glenn Danzig and what he had done before. The different Bands appeal to my different moods: Danzig gives me the power, Misfits is the kind of music I listen to when having a party with my friends, fast driving in my car, having fun. Samhain appeals to my darker sides.... What about the Home-Video for Lucifuge?? This may sound funny, strange or even impossible to you, but Ive never seen that one in a shop. First time I found out that such a thing exists was when entering the Danzig Homepage. was this Video released in Europe/Germany?? Am I blind, dumb, def or customer in the wrong shops?? Another topic: How do you like the comics?? Ive only read three issues (Jaguar God, Verotika, Satanika). No offend, but I only liked Jaguar God. The story of Satanika was a bit "simple", though I kinda liked the artwork. The stories in Verotika were great, but the artwork....sucked. How are the others, are they worth subscribing at my local comic dealer? Genitorturers: Ive seen their show twice here in Germany, but I cant get any info on them. Anybody who knows where to look?? Your god bless you, mine bless me. Andreas ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jul 1995 00:25:43 -0400 From: She Subject: sunday well, evb took a lot of words out of my mouth, and i'm glad because i didn't want to type forever tonight. but, let me just say a few things about sunday. first, bobby steele has got to be one of the nicest guys i ever met. he was so friendly and knowledgeable, and no matter what some unsubscriber said in a previous message, he put on a great show. and i waited 6 hours at that club to see it, so i know what i'm talking about. so bobby really helped me out on the old misfits discog and i spent most of today updating it. it won't be on the page for a while, but it'll get there. so anyone curious? here's what they played: I'm So Happy In Eighty Four I Don't Wanna Do It Anymore (new song, i probably have the title wrong) Verbal Abuse Shadows Invisible Man The Way We Behave I Turned Into A Martian Put YOur Clothes Back On When The Evening Comes Never Say Die My kinda Town There's A Riot In Tompkins Square Horror Business Eve Of Destruction No Vices Rat Fink (or as the undead call it R.A.T.T. F.I.N.k.) I WAnt YOu Dead (requested by my pal mike and me) so it was a great show. the audience for the most part was dead. in fact, if it weren't for evb's quick action, 11 of us wouldn't have been there. unfortunately 11 was a third of the audience. yes it's true, just 33 people there, most of the kids seemed more interested in hearing misfits covers even though this band was called "THE UNDEAD". it was funny to see the flyer listing them as "THE UNDEAD, formerly the misfits". i got a lot of new undead stuff that i hadn't been able to find and evb is definitely correct about slave to fashion. it's been in my head all day. killer song. for the most part, the audience seemed to be the same as the horror convention opening night in nj from april. johnathon grimm, evb and her crew, chris lair, mike p, and ... me. also a bonus at the undead show was Billy Whitfield, who some of you have traded with. i had never seen him before and i guess i should have expected to see him there. on a side note, a friend of mine has some stuff for sale. she needs some money, so some of the prices might seem high to people who aren't used to dealing in Misfits material: Initium (first press, red vinyl) $80 Samhain - Live '85 CD bootleg (only Samhain CD boot) $25 Die Die 12" - best offer Legacy Of Brutality LP 1st print - best offer Earth A.D. reissue LP - best offer November Coming Fire reissue LP (but she'll throw in the original lyric sheet) - best offer I believe that's all. Email me if you're interested and I"ll relay it to her. About the condition, I havent' seen those records in years (i found them all for her) but they're in very good condition. so that's all, right? wrong, i typed up the very best Samhain article I've ever read. I think it's necessary reading for anyone who likes Samhain and anyone who is curious about the end of the Misfits... so I'll send that momentarily. mark ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jul 1995 00:28:14 -0400 From: She Subject: Forced Exposure 7/8 FORCED EXPOSURE #7/8 SAMHAIN INTERVIEW, By Byron Coley and Jimmy Johnson AT GLENN'S HOUSE, LODI, N.J. 10/27/84 GLENN DANZIG EERIE VON STELLMAN STEVE ZING BYRON JIMMY Glenn: Yeah, we're recording a new 12". It's called Unholy Passion. It will be different than Initium... I know there will be at least two songs that are kinda weird. We do a remake of "All Hell Breaks Loose" -- the way we do it live. Byron: How do you mean, weird? Glenn: Just different than what we normally do. We're experimenting more. It will still sound like Samhain and it will still have a lot of power, and loud and everything... but it's just moving into different areas. Jimmy: More rhythmic sutff? Glenn: There's one song that is...it's really hard for me to explain the stuff the band is doing now because it doesn't fit into any of the categories that everybody is working in right now... it's a definitive sound... Byron: You think it's better than the last one (Initium)? Glenn: I liked the last one but this stuff is kinda different so that's why I would say I like it more. Jimmy: How about this "uneven production" stuff that some guy in D.C. mentioned... Glenn: Oh, you mean Tesco... well, we don't want every song to sound the same. That kinda defeats the purpose of having ten different songs. It's that old punk rock attitude -- every song should sound the same. I don't really think that way -- we're trying to get away from that. Byron: Is it your tendency to lay down all the basic tracks in one session and handle them all real differently? Glenn: I think about production way before I even record a song... about how each one will be... Byron: On Initium it almost sounded like some of the stuff was done in different studios... each song almost had a different ambience. Glenn: It's just the way the song is done... not all the songs were done at the same time. The whole thing is -- when you're producing a song you want to do something different with each one. And that means something has to take a back seat when another thing is pushed up in volume. You can't have everything blasting. When you want certain things to be heard, something else has to come down. "Archangel" has two bass tracks. When we do it live, our guitar player straps on another bass and I put on a guitar. Some people are like, "What are you doing?! Blah blah blah..." Well, those people can go see Johnny and the Hardcores -- don't come see us. If they want the Johnny and the Hardcores' album where everything sounds the same, they they can go buy it... JImmy: Have you ever played guitar on stage before? Previous to Samhain? Glenn: Well, in other bands before the Misfits... I've played guitar for a long time. Jimmy: How about time-wise? Did you spend a lot more hours recording than with the Misfits? Glenn: Yeah, but in some aspects not really because Walk Among Us took a real long time. When you hear that record -- that was the third time that thing was recorded. The only Misfits thing that was done under budget... I don't know what came in under budget with Misfits's stuff. (laughs) Eerie: Nothing. Byron: Over how long was Initium done? Glenn: Well the studio we used (Reel Platinum in Lodi) is alwasy backed up two months in advance. So we'd go in thinking we could finish it up and then we'd run out of time, so we'd have to wait another two months to get more time in the studio. Byron: I was real happy that the speed was back down... Jimmy: Yeah, a lot of that stuff on Earth A.D. was just too much... Glenn: It was just too fast. That's whay I was really depressed after that album. I just didn't want anything to do with that band. Some of the stuff on Initium is even too fast for us, so we might re-record some of it and slow it down. Jimmy: How about the musicianship of the band live, is it a lot better than the Misfits? Glenn: Oh yeah, most of the people who come up to me after a show will say, "You're in a real band now", things like that... because he (Eerie) actually plays bass. And he's only been playing since last January ('84). Jerry (Only/Misfits) was playing for how long? And he didn't care about doing fifths or octave notes or runs or anything. He couldn't be bothered doing any of that. Live, sometimes, he didn't really care if he was playing or not. If he forgot where he was he would just let everyone bang on the bass. That was his way of saying "Ill get out of this." Jimmy: Did you start out with the ideaof Samain or was it going to the Glenn Danzig solo project? Glenn: It started out as Samhain. That was the one of the main names that I really wanted... Jimmy: How long did you have that name in the back of your head? Glenn: For a while. I've been studying Samhain for the last two years -- it's something I've always wanted to do, and information on it is real hard to come by and it's expensive when you do come across it -- and I had the song "Samhain" so it felt right. Me and Eerie would always talk about how we weren't really happy with the bands we were in... Eerie: I'd call up and we'd talk for three hours about how things sucked in the band and how they should be better. Glenn: So originally, Eerie played drums and we were going through guitarists and bass players. Eventually though, I got Steve (Zing) from Mourning Noise on drums, and I taught Eerie bass 'cause he had a real good image on stage and stuff. I knew I could teach him bass in a month, it's so easy. Byron: Originally we had heard rumors that you would be moving a couple hours closer to D.C. and be playing with Brian and Lyle. Glenn: That was a long time ago when I was thinking of doing a band with Brian and Lyle and that didn't work out. I only went down to two rehearsals in D.C. and the reherasals I went to really sucked. Jimmy: Were you working with a drummer? Glenn: When I went down there, they didn't have a drummer. They brought Jeff (Nelson/Minor Threat) in for a while. Jimmy: So they already had the idea for a band and they wanted you instead of the other way around? Glenn: They told me, "We want a real singer." Byron: But it was gonna be mostly their material? Glenn: Originally, they said, "The whole thing you're doing with your lyrics" -- and everything I write about -- "is great." And they came up here and played me some of their songs. And the stuff sounded pretty good. When I got down to D.C. they still hadn't gotten a drummer. As far as a bass player goes we were supposed to get someone like Tim Kerr from the Big Boys. Someone who was really good. And what they did was get Graham from Negative Appraoch, who's a really great guy, bat as far as being a great bass player... I mean Eerie's better than him right now. So that kinda bummed me out. The original idea was to create this supergroup, basically, and it wasn't. And the songs had changed when I got down there, they were kinda wimpy. Byron: So it was sorta like The 400 (Brian and Lyle's current project) stuff? Glenn: Yeah. And the thing was, there wasn't room in any of their songs for me to lay any phrasing or singing. It was very guitar oriented -- they carried all the melodies... it just wasn't working. I didn't really feel anything with the music. It wasn't doing anything for me. It wasn't making me want to go crazy. Jimmy: Did you plan to go fifty/fifty with their songs and yours? Glenn: I just said, this stuff is not giong to fit in with what I've been writing. Thwy were actually writing songs that were starting to sound like Rush... and I hate Rush. Then they got this drummer who is the guy they're using now and who is also in the Meatmen, and I just did not get along with him at all. I don't know... he jwas just real snooty about music, "I can't do that - it's too simple." Jimmy: That's the guy with the huge set, double bass etc? Glenn: Yeah. He was doing these rolls on the drums like Duran Duran. Going from the little tin thing... Byron: Like Mike Oldfied. Fuckin' cool. Tubular Bells. Glenn: If I wanted to be in a band like that I could form my own and make a million dollars, but I don't wanna do that. I just said, "look, you guys would be better off without me." Jimmy: What's the difference between that and Lyle being in Samhain? Glenn: After those rehearsals, Lyle said he still really wanted to work with me, so I told him I'd fly him up here. The first rehearsal went really great and we already had a show booked. Byron: When was this? Glenn: We started rehearsing about late January '84 and that show was booked for late March at the Rock Hotel. Jimmy: When was the last Misfits show? Glenn: That was Halloween. Me and Eerie already had Samhain going by then... Eerie: When he came back from that show he was so disgusted. He called up the next day and said, "This sucks, let's do it." Jimmy: So you had Samhain and the D.C. thing both at the same time and were indecisive as to which one to pursue. Glenn: I was waiting to see what would happen... as far as a bass player goes we could've gotten almost anyone. Graham wasn't really that important... and Jeff is way better than the guy they've got now as far as a drummwer with energy and consistency. The guy they've got now is like a showoff. He's a typical Top 100 drummer, which is what they band sounded like they were gonna end up as. This really unoriginal Top 100 band writing originals... I just said, "That's me ten years ago." Jimmy: So you were never seriously gonna make the move down? Glenn: Oh I was thinking about it -- if things worked out. But I guess they started telling everybody... JImmy: ... and you wanted to get Todd (Swalla/Necros) to drum right? Glenn: The whole idea behind that band was to have people who were really good at what they did -- a kick-ass guitarist, a kick-ass dcrummer, all the way down the line. And it never worked out that way. Everntually they started settling for this one or that one, and I didn't want to settle. Even if it meant hanging around for a while waiting for someone to finish up their commitments. Jimmy: Did Tim from the Big Boys ever agree to come out? Glenn: No, he listened to the tape that Lyle sent him and just said, "Naw". Which is basically what happened to me. I went dow there for two times and said, "This isn't it." That all happened inside a month, because at the time I was still running Plan 9. I had Earth A.D. to move and I was getting ready to put out Die Die My Darling 12", and we were also starting to record the Samhain LP. We were working on "Archangel". Byron: When did you start on that? Glenn: I started "Archangel" August '83. Jimmy: So, before the last Misfits show. Glenn: Yeah. Remember the Santa Monica Civic show? I quit that night. That was June 1983. I told those guys, "That's it." As a matter of fact, I told Henry Rollins that night too. He said, "Wow, I've seen it coming though." Byron: But you had just recorded Earth A.D. the night before, right? Genn: Yeah, but it wasn't finished because the monitor fell onto the sound board. We didn't really even get started. We recorded the rest of it out here with Spot. Byron: So "Archangel" was you and Eerie recording alone? Glenn: No I did the drums for it and Al Pike (Reagan Youth and Straight Edge magazine) played bass. Al Pike was originally supposed to be in the band, but he wouldn't leave his job and I didn't want to have to go through that again. Jimmy: Was that the first off the Initium LP that you wrote? Glenn: "Archangel" I wrote for Dave Vanian a long time ago and he was supposed to sing it with us playing it and backing him up on the record. That was in 1981. He came over and did a few rehearsals with us in Jerry's garage but it never happened. Then me and Steve did four or five more songs where I played guitar direct with Steve's drums. I then went back and added some bass tracks. Then Eerie went back and overdubbed some additional bass tracks because he had just started playing and we worked from there. And when Lyle said he wanted to do it, he laid some additional guitar overlay stuff. On a lot of songs he refused to play down-stroking. He wanted to play up and down which makes a difference, because when it comes back up you're hitting the end strings first, which is not what I wanted -- it sounded like Atkins or something. (laughs). We've got live reviews of our first show that actually said the band was great, but you could tell that Lyle wasn't really part of the band. Jimmy: How many times did he rehearse with Samhain? Glenn: Three or four times... I would fly him here on weekends and he'd just stay for that night and say, "I gotta go home". And then he started saying that he was getting a lot of shit in D.C. about the spooky image... and he had already applied for college in the fall. So we did the Rock Hotel show and never called him back. And we got Damien from Mourning Noise. Byron: Were you writing all new material for Samhain or were you using old stuff that hadn't been used previously? Glenn: I had stuff that the Misfits could never do and I had stuff I was writing as Samahin was progressing. It was a combination but now it's all new material. Jinny: How prolific are you now writing-wise? Glenn: Not prolific. I won't even write a song now unless I think it's gonna be pretty good. I'll think about it for quite a while before I even put it on paper. Byhron: Do you write on guitar? Glenn: Well, lately, I've been writing a lot of stuff on keyboard. I wrote this song called, "The Hungry End" on piano, which will freak a lot of people out. I've been listening to the "Cough/Cool" record (the Misfits' first, guitarless 45) a lot lately, and it's been really inspiring me. The whole thing is, I want to get the feeling back in this band that I was getting in '77/'78 from being in a punk band. For us it's there, and it seems like for the audience it's there as well, because we have tons of people going crazy for our stuff and we're not a hardcore band. Byron: How many shows have done so far? Glenn: We did a mini-tour for aobut two weeks all over the midwest. Most of the people said it was great to be able to hear my vocals. And a lot of girls are into Samhain. I think it's a little more sexual and a lot less menaacing physically. In Kansas City, there were a whole bunch of thirteen to fouteen year old girls hanging out by Steve's drum set, looking at him going, "I'm in love"... Jimmy: Well how many girls would look at Robo and say, "I'm in love"? Glenn: None. They'd go, "Daddy take me home now." The other night we did the NYU radio interview and I got a call and it was this girl who wanted a date. But I can't go on blind dates, because you might end up with Gorilla Monsoon... Byron: Yeah, that's true, but than at least you could find out some good wrestling anecdotes... so are you going to re-record any of these older things? Glenn: Well, I'm gonna do a special 10" because I've always wanted to do one. It's gonna be Samhain, but it's gonna have "Halloween II" live on the b-side and that's the only way you'll be able to get us doing that. I wanted to do a couple of the Misfits' songs in our set because they fit. We never did "Halloween II" live with the Misfits. We travel with a harmonizer now too se we can get all the background vocals... and "Bloodfeast" and "Death Comes Ripping" were originally Samhain songs and I gave them to the Misfits to make Earth A.D. a full album. "Bloodfeast" is supposed to be a lot slower than it is on that album. Byron: When you were writing stuff for Earth A.D., around that period, was it real specific -- this song is for Eath A.D. and one is for this unnamed project which was to become Samhain? Glenn: No, because most of the Earth A.D. stuff goes back to 1981. We were doing all that stuff back then. We were doing "Queen Wasp". I had "Earth A.D." written, but Googgy couldn't play it. We were doing "Demonomania" -- all that stuff was '81/early '82, with the exception of "Bloodfeast" and "Death Comes Ripping" and "Green Hell" -- which was written for the Misfits. "We Bite" is real old, "Die Die My Darling" we recorded at the Walk Among Us sessions. It always took the Misfits a real long time to get records out because Jerry and Doyle were working and they weren't really committed to the band as much as they should have been and things like that. Jimmy: Were those songs written at that speed? Glenn: No, they had this idea that they wanted to play live in the stuido, and that's why they wanted Spot to produce, and the songs came out way too fast. I was just not too thrilled with it. It's my least favorite Misfits record. It's alright. I still think it blows away a lot of the other stuff on the market, but for me personally... Byron: For a whil weren't ou gonna cut it back from an LP to an EP? Glenn: Yeah, right after the Civic thing we were gonna release it as a five song 12", but then we decided to add the four others. Byron: So when's the new 12" gonna be out? Glenn: It was gonna be mid-December, but as we're recording it now, I see that I wanna add more stuff, more overdubs. We're going twenty four track and I really wanna use them up. It will be five songs... Byron: Have you done any foreign licensing on Samhain stuff? Glenn: No, because I still haven't gotten paid from the German guy (Aggressive Rock) for Evilive and Wolfsblood. Byron: The only other foreign thing you have is the Itlaian Walk Among Us... Glenn: Yeah, Slash did that when it came out. It's on Slash instead of Ruby and it says "The Misfit" on the spine, but otherwise it's the same. Jimmy: Did you always want to do all the colors? Glenn: Yeah, I like colored vinyl. I don't care if anyone else complains. Don't buy it then, no one is forcing anyone to buy it. Byron: And on Initium you did... Glenn: About a hundred on white vinyl and about fifty five on marble, and maybe about 5000 altogether on black so far. Jimmy: How heavy of a touring band do you wanna be? Glenn: Pretty heavy... about tow, maybe three times a year. Every four or five months. Byron: So after the 12" you wanna do 10"? Glenn: Yeah, it'll probably be something off the 12" plus a non-LP b-side... just because I wanna doa 10" -- only about a thousand of them. Byron: Are you through with 7" records for a while? Glenn: Yeah, no more 7" records. I have to cut out and glue the sleeves myself and I can't do that for a couple of thousand. Besides, there's no money in them -- I lose money on 7"'s. It's just not the gluing aspect. Byron: What about limited stuff? Glenn: It's not worth it... just the money I would have to spend... and the distributors will take so many more 12"'s than 7"'s. Byron: The world won't have any Samhain singles to file... it's kinda sad... Glenn: The singles market is dead. The pressing plants want a real lot for 7" and it costs a lot for cardstock sleeves instead of shitty paper ones, and if I can't do it right then I don't want to do it. Byron: Do you have any other material besides what's on the LP and 12"? Glenn: I've got a couple of new ones which we're learning now and will probably play on this tour... Byron: Is the Fiend Club still in operation? Glenn: Basically, Plan 9 has a mail order opernation, that is what it is... for t-shirts and posters and for Samhain/Misfits LP's. There's no 45's available as of now... I wanna do a box set, limited to a thousand, of the Misfits 45's. Byron: There was talk for a whil that you were gonna be doing a magazine... Glenn: I wanted to do a magazine, but I just got bogged down with this band and the label. Bascailly, with Samhain we wanna get a definitive sound and always keep that power and intensity, and just experiment with all kinds of stuff. Do things that nobody else is doing. Everybody is just doing mediocre bullshit, like all these thrash bands. They're not as good as the bands they're just trying to rip off. All the good thrash bands are gone. All these other bands are stupid. Their lyrics are real dumb. I like real good lyrics, and there's nothing there for me... all these kids just had this thing handed to them. They didn't have to work for it or anything. They think the bands owe them something, just because they bought their record. I don't owe anybody jackshit. I owe you a good show if you come to see us and that's about it. Byron: It's true... it's real weird as to thes tuff that's happened with all that... Glenn: It's just these little spoiled kids. They don't have to fight a scene, they didn't have to fight for shows and stuff... Jimmy: It's just become so easy to put out a record and have an immediate following... Glenn: The bad part is that so many reviewers will say anything is good. Like this fanzine, Malice, from Memphis which I've got -- "Everything's great! Everything's great!" And I've heard some of those records and they suck shit. They're real bad. But just because someone sends them a free record it's great. Jimmy: It's always gone on to a certain extent, but it's really proliferating now. Like, if you look at the Flipside fanzine list now, there's about 250 'zines listed, whereas a few years ago there were only about fifteen or so. Glenn: And they're not really fanzines -- they're just one or two pages. Pieces of shit. Byron: ... Just P.O. boxes to get some free records. Glenn: That's what I like about Hard Times. He said that they're not gonna do one paragraph reviews of records, because that's a little bit misleading, and you can't really let someon know what a record's about in one paragraph... I hate those one paragraph reviews like in Maximum Rock & Roll. Jimmy: Well... there're various forms of the one paragraph review. (in defense of F.E.'s unquestioned excellence as regards the form) Glenn: I like the MRR reviews, "This isn't political". What's that got to do with music? Is it a good record? Is the music good? Did it do something for you? They're not the only magazine that's guilty of that. Byron: No, but they've become the standard from for all these other little fuckin' fanzines that are trying to do the same thing... there was this review in MRR that said, "I looked at this and thought it was gonna be a wild record, but it's not, it sounds like The Birthday Party." (laughter) * * = The actual review was from MRR #18 and ran as follows: "The Legend 'The Legend Destroys the Blues' 7". Don't be fooled by the cartoon of the guy in a Ramones t-shirt on the back cover or the frantic maniac on the front cover: This is not wild shit. It's more of a Birthday Party-type minimalist Rock. Well done but not crazed." Glenn: How much wilder can you get? Byron: It's so fuckin' weird... Glenn: Well, people are like that... in the band I'm in now, and even with the Misfits, we always tried to be a couple of steps ahead of what was going on. As far as Earth A.D. goes, I don't know about that. If I had produced ti the way I wanted to, it would have been. This band, I think is a few steps ahead of what's going on. Byron: Right, but I think the obvious connection for a lot of people is still gonna be the Misfits. There isn't a big image change between the two. Glenn: Well, live there is... the blood there (pointing to the cover of Initium) ties into the whole Samhain thing, letting the blood run. Samhain is the pagan Halloween, and is based a lot on the death of the earth -- and everything dies at the end of fall. Byron: So it's an annual thing? Glenn: It's what Halloween is. Christians didn't want the pagans believing in any of the old pagan things, so what they did is they changed the name from Samhain to Halloween, and they changed the name of Christmas and all the holidays. Anyone who didn't listen got killed. Basically, the whole Samhain thing is -- the pagans celebrated the death of earth, and any animal that couldn't survive through the winter, that they didn't have enough food to feed, because winters were tough back then, they had to kill. With Samhain, some sects in Europe would actually kill a king every year and sacrifice him -- the blood would replenish the earth so that in spring they would have great crops again and things like that... the "Halloween" trilogy is based on Samhain. Also, on Samhain, supposedly the dimensions open up because of the shift from the summer and fall into winter and the dead can come back. They used to set places for the dead at the tables. Byron: Yeah, I was wonderin'. 'Cause when I first saw it, it was written out like it was just the name of a guy. Glenn: It's really pronounced "Sow-win". It's Gaelic. You really see the difference between Samhain and the Misfits when you see the lyrics. Also, with the next record -- a lot of it is against organized religion. Religion is good, but not what they've done with it now. If I say I hate Catholics, or I hate Jews, or Protestants, etc., it's not the individual that I hate -- the people who are of that faith -- but it's the people who practice that as a way of life. I don't like those people. Like the Right-to-Lifer's and the people who want to mingle church and state. I really hate that. Byron: Would you say that you're religious though? Glenn: I'm a very religous person, but I wouldn't pray to a saint or a pope. Basically, whether you believe in god or not, there's probably just one supreme power -- that's what I believe, anyway -- and that's who you pray to. There are religious atrocities, like the Catholics just eradicating races of people -- more people than Hitler did -- just because these people's sole purpose was to be one with god and to the Catholics that was heresy. It's annoying that people always single out Nazis, or this and that, and never mention any of the religous movements in this country. Do you know how many people would be killed if the church was mingled with the state? Anybody who didn't believe in "their god", their form of religion, would be forced over. It's happened before and it can happen again. This band, lyrically, is more heavy duty. Byron: There always seemed to be a comic book element to a lot of the earlier stuff. Glenn: Yeah, that's gone. Eerie: This is more real life stuff. Glenn: If someone sat down and really looked at the lyrics to the Misfits' stuff they could see what's going on and could tie the connections. This is just a more real band. Byron: Are you thinking of doing any video stuff? Eerie: Yeah, but not any performance stuff. It will be all storyline to a song. Glenn: We're gonna do "Samhain". I might do one for "Initium". "Unholy Passion" will probably be real sick if we do it, but that's further down the road. Byron: How soon will that be? Glenn: Well, we'll be back from the tour in December and we're not going to tour during the winter because of the bad weather. So we'll have until April or May as a layoff period. We're gonna record and release a second LP then, so we'll have plenty of time to do stuff. Byron: Is there more material you recorded for Initium that hasn't come out yet? Glenn: No, that's all there is. That narrative beginning thing, "Initium", me and Eerie did that in his room on a four track cassette recorded, which is pretty wild. Byron: So are you gonna be playing any keyboards, Glenn? Glenn: Yeah, there're some keyboards on the new 12". We added a lot of stuff to this record -- it's gonna be really full. We're into the idea that a studio album should be different than live. The power should still be there in the studio, but you've got more tracks to play with, so do it. Make it an interesting record -- layers and layers of stuff. Byron: So you wouldn't take the keyboards with you live? Glenn: We might eventually. Not right now, but maybe for the spring tour, in about May. Not a real keyboard, like an organ, it would be a DX7, which patches in sounds like a cello or bells or whatever. And it would only be for stuff from the album, whihc means a little overlay here or there. It's nothing major in any song. Any of this is just something we're adding to a killer song. It's not that this whole song is a keyboard thing with us going, "La La La". Byron: Now wait a second. You just told me you were listening to "Cough/Cool" a lot. That's a keyboard record. Glenn: Yeah, but that's not a "La La La" song. It's a keyboard song with fuzz. That's because we didn't have a guitar player in the band. Everybody was into Yes, Led Zep, and Queen... Byron: You played guitar though. Why not on it? Glenn: I don't know. I didn't have a guitar. I only had this thing. (picks up an old semi-hollow Danelectro) Eerie: Oh, you got a bottom string now. Byron: The truth is out. That's why you didn't play guitar... Glenn: I normally write on four strings -- the top four -- then I added a fifth one, now I finally added the last E string. Byron: I thnk you could take that guitar out with you. You could do a little sensitive acoustic number. (laughter) Glenn: No... one of the things I don't like is that a lot of people, in their strive to be different, are just reverting to the past. Like the Husker's Zen Arcade LP and a lot of other people always talking about the Velvet Underground and poetry... yeah, when I was in high school I was listening to the VU and getting shit for it. I was reading all the poetry back then. Where were you eight to ten years ago? It's just so stupid. I don't like reversion. Things go forward -- don't go back. You acn look at your roots or your past and say what it would be like now, but not this regression. Music should be expanding, going further. Byron: But it's like you said, history repeats itself. It's fuckin' true. Musical history is the same thing. Glenn: Yeah, but it should have a quality that relates to now. You shouldn't listen to a record and say, "Is this Crosby, Stills, and Nash?" Byron: Or is it Memorex? Glenn: No. It's Husker Du... it should have something about now and maybe modern technology as far as recording goes. Byron: With the band live, have you run into a lot of people yelling for Misfits' stuff? Eerie: Yeah, but it started to taper off real quick. Glenn: Think of some good questions. Something weird... Byron: Um, what's Tesco's sperm taste like? Glenn: I don't know... he doesn't have any. ------------------------------------- To contribute to the next issue, please send email to: misfits@virginia.edu For more information, or for back issues, contact Mark Kennedy at: msk4m@watt.seas.virginia.edu The Misfits World Wide Web page is located at: http://watt.seas.virginia.edu/~msk4m/ The Misfits mailing address is: The Misfits | P.O. This may not be the meaning of the song, but Mario and I discovered an interesting connection several months back. We were flipping through the pages of our friend Andy's art history textbook when Andy pointed out a photo of a statue of Nike, the Roman (?) goddess of victory. The headless statue looked really familiar to Mario. We took out his Earth A.D./Wolf's Blood record and sure enough, there was Nike, right on the cover (she is the statue on the right side of the album cover). My friend Niels even got a copy of the original "Cough/Cool" there when he was visiting from Germany! MisfiFiend - boy is your source a creative storyteller! Bobby thought the AIDs story was really funny when I read it to him - needless to say he's very much alive! Bet Glenn would find the exorcism bit just as funny. Chris Terns - oh you lucky dog to get to see Glenn with Metallica... had only I known they'd do that!!!! Ralph Herbert - the Earth AD/Evilive CD I bought last year from an ad in Goldmine mag was $40 ; if you were trying to sell it you should be able to get at least that (I know a lot of folks on the Bible are searching for it) Andreas Viehoff - I have no idea if the Lucifuge video ever was released overseas - you could always get a US copy & have it transferred to PAL. (I've had to do the reverse on British tapes... thank ghod Japan is on NTSC or I'd be in BIG trouble!) Funny, but I liked the art in Verotika more than in Jaguar God, especially the Bisley story in #1 and the work by Esteban Moroto in #3. The computer coloring realy gets on my nerves tho, reminds me too much in look of the Image books which I'm not big on. As for Genitorturers - if ya want I have a bunch of interviews & clippings on them I can copy, also have some GREAT pix I took when they played the 9:30 club. They don't get much press in the US either - most of the articles I have I got from a long time fan in Tampa, Florida near where they are from (Orlando a/k/a Disney World! That'll warp ya fer sure!). They have only put out two releases I know of - the "120 Days of Genitorture" album on CD (IRS, 1993) and an earlier 7" on purple vinyl (House of Shame/Jackin' Man/Rivers Edge/Strip the Flesh) that came out a few years ago and is now very scarce. Well, like I hinted last issue I've got some important news. I was asked to sit for a week before I posted it since the folks in question were in the process of still trying to come up with an official statement to make. Unfortunately, it's not good news. Far from it. Boy do I hate to say this. I got a call from Eerie Von on July 15th to tell me that he and John Christ have both quit Danzig. We had a long talk and I'm grateful to hear it straight from him since it would have REALLY hurt even more to hear months of rumors & then maybe see a little note somewhere. I don't want to go into details, but I think I can best sum up the reasons in exactly the words Eerie used: "the reasons that I joined the band in the first place aren't there anymore". Eerie is going to work on his own music - a blues band with some country influences. I asked him if he'd be working with John but he said he wouldn't since their musical taste is so different from his. He wanted me to pass on that anybody who wants to write him or John can send it to his PO Box ( He'll forward letters to John) Eerie Von PO Box 9215 Lyndhurst, NJ 07071 Eerie said that Glenn had mentioned maybe taking a few years off from music, also he said that Glenn was thinking of doing music that was (to quote Eerie) more of a "punk/industrial/tribal kinda thing". It would be trite to state the usual "musical differences" but it was a contributing factor to the tension. They will still be issuing the Samhain box set though; Eerie has been in the darkroom printing up photos for the set. Eerie also mentioned that Checuk Biscuits will be playing on the next Four Horseman album and that Joey Castillo will be on the next Sugartooth album. I can't say I didn't see it coming but I'm still crushed. This band has meant so much to me all this years; they've become like my family. And I've met so many of my closest friends traveling to their shows & even more over the net all because of them - what can I say except they fucking changed my life in a very major way. It's gonna leave a big gaping hole in my life and in my heart. Needless to say I've been crying for days. Anyway, I'm flying out to California in a few days to see Glenn - I doubt he'll feel like talking about this but if he has anything to pass on I'll let you know. If anybody is going to the San Diego Comic Con I'll prolly be working at Verotik's booth so look for me there. -EVB ------------------------------ From: CTernes@aol.com Date: Thu, 20 Jul 1995 17:17:45 -0400 Subject: Ternes's Perspective Hello! As all of you know by now, the mighty Danzig has broken up. Many people are upset about this. I signed on this afternoon and my mailbox was filled just about to capacity. Am I the only one who does not feel like this is the worst news in the world? Honestly, I love Danzig. And I've loved them for a long time. People around here know me as "Danzig man". People don't say, "Do you know Chris Ternes?" They say "Do you know the guy who wears all Danzig shit all the time?" The rock band Danzig has put out about 50 great tunes....and the rumors and possibility of a break up have been floating around for a long time now. HOWEVER, I am not an uncaring bastard, and I too am VERY upset about the whole break up thing. But there's something that pisses me off even more. What I will bitch about is what Glenn said he may do. Punk/industrial/tribal? Hmmmm, I get it. So the new Glenn Danzig shit is going to be another fuckin "Sadistikal" another "Invocation" and perhaps another Misfits type tune. That does not please me, unfortunately. I will be optimistic, and say that maybe the new shit will be good....and you know that comic book thing is still around (saw Verotika #1 today---$45). Whatever the real reasons, I wish all of the folks involved much sucess in the future and would like to voice my appreciation for all of the great recordings and live shows over the years. I've no doubt that there will be loads of speculation in the coming weeks with regard to this turn of events, and I'm equally certain that some of it will give me pause for thought and that most of it will anger me. Regardless, I have to say--a little preemptive strike here--that if it wasn't for Glenn's talent, we wouldn't have three great bands to discuss and we wouldn't have all of those truly amazing songs which continue to entertain us years after the fact. The legacy will endure. But, since others were writing 'bout there first Misfits experience, what the heck. It was about '86 when Master of Puppets (Metallica :>) came out. One of the pictures in the album had all of them sitting in what looked like a living room with thiese records around there. One of them was a Misfits album. I was, actually still am a big Cliff Burton fan, and this gut worshipped the Misfits. I thought I'd see what the heck they are about. A few of my friends listend to them, so I borrowed some tapes. Man, it was so raw, so cool, you couldn't hear a world the dude said. As I started getting into it, I found out about Samhain. There was like a 5 year period where I basically dropped out of the music scene, But have managed to find the 4 Misfits CD's I could find and the three Samhain. It was actually hearing Lucifuge that sparked my interest in Danzig etc. again. Another little bit of trivia: it was Cliff Burton that introduced Rick Rubin to Danzig by bringing him to a Samhain Concert. Rubin wanted to sign him immediately on his label, Def American. Later.. Basically at some point Jerry talked to the company that put out that stuff and somehow it was decided that legally it was okay for there to be a cartoon misfits and a real one. evb knows the story better than i do. About Chuck being in the Misfits - I don't know about this one. there are so many silly stories; whenever someone practiced or hung out with the misfits, they seem to claim that they were a member or a great buddy or something like that. eerie says in an interview that he even played with the misfits. well, he tried out, but according to jerry that's it. anyway, my first experience with the misfits? end of 1988 when walk among us was reissued and the Misfits compilation LP came out, I started getting to know them. i only knew hollywood babylon and hate breeders, basically because my friends were getting into them. then i heard their version of green hell and was pretty amazed at the power and speed. when the twist of cain single came out, i was hooked on glenn's voice and somehow i determined that the voice of the misfits and the voice of twist of cain were the same. so, having accumulated a good starting base of knowledge (my friends were collectors who knew about all the 7"'s and ep's) i started going after anything with glenn's voice. i started with die die and then legacy of brutality and then walk among us and then i accidentally discovered the Less Than Zero soundtrack and got it too, before I ever bought any Danzig. and here i am. mark ------------------------------------- To contribute to the next issue, please send email to: misfits@virginia.edu For more information, or for back issues, contact Mark Kennedy at: msk4m@watt.seas.virginia.edu The Misfits World Wide Web page is located at: http://watt.seas.virginia.edu/~msk4m/ The Misfits mailing address is: The Misfits | P.O. I'd just like to throw in a few (hopefully upbeat) view and comments on the Danzig break up. Obviously, it's a terrible shame (waste even?) when such a talented and for the most part, unusual band splits up but then I guess most people said that right after the Misfits and subsequently Samhain split. I think the fact that Glenn's whole life has been spent writing, recording and playing music hints that we have plenty more things to hear from him yet... in whatever form. Talking to others (hi Trish!) I think it would be great if Glenn to time out to do stuff that maybe Danzig (the band) would not allow, such as an album full of stuff like 'You And Me' or covers from his favorite artists (now that would be diverse!). I hope all the ex- Danzig guys do well with their respective projects and await Eerie's stuff with great interest... I just hope that they and Glenn don't indulge in the traditional 'ex-member' slaggings that so many bands seem to. I guess the _really_ depressing thing about the split is that the reasons for it do tend to fall heavily on the side of the 'Danzig's a dictator' faction. Whatever, they were an almighty band and it's sad it's all over. BTW, for those of you who may be worried about what 'Industrial/Tribal/Punk' might entail, check out 'I Don't Mind The Pain' for a BIG tribal influence, 'Sadistikal' for the industrial side and the whole Misfits back catologue for the punk stuff.... we needn't worry, Glenn's been into and doing this stuff all his career :) Julian ------------------------------ From: ols@home.interaccess.com Date: Tue, 25 Jul 1995 11:19:33 -0600 Subject: End of Danzig Well, just as Danzig's light is burning out, The Misfits' is rekindling. A few issues looked like newsgroup postings! What's with all the Bobby Steele/AIDS/dead B.S.?? Irving Meadows) and did a bunch of Misfits songs with them. Does anyone know anymore about this? I won't comment on Danzig breaking up, but it does show (to me at least) how cheap Danzig is. Having the other band members on a fixed salary while Glenn gets all the royalties seems like a real asshole thing to do. Eerie Von was there from the beginning and it seems like Glenn really screwed him in the end run. Also does this seem like a pattern with Glenn? ie Breaking up successful bands? Finally, a couple of bibles back it mentioned that the reformed Misfits were given the option to play under Type O Negative, and refused it. To me it seems like a missed opportunity. To see The Misfits and TON play together would be great. The two bands have alot in common. LD ------------------------------ From: CTernes@aol.com Date: Fri, 28 Jul 1995 16:37:57 -0400 Subject: AOL NEWS Well, here's a bit of AOL news for all of us on AOL: >From The Wall Street Journal SAN FRANCISCO -- A California lawyer has sued America Online Inc., alleging that the on-line service overcharges its customers. According to the suit, which seeks class-action status and was filed in California Superior Court in San Francisco, America Online bills parts of minutes as whole minutes, and in some cases as two minutes, and charges for time that customers spend accessing "free" service areas. (This overcharging may easily be overlooked for people who spend a lot of time chatting online but becomes very obvious for people who economize by using the "flash mail" feature.) AOL, Vienna, Va., charges customers $9.95 a month, which includes five hours of on-line time, plus an additional $2.95 an hour. The company declined to comment on the suit and declined to answer questions about how it bills for parts of a single minute. If AOL charged each of its 3.2 million customers for an extra one minute a month, it would have received over a year's time $1.9 million, equivalent to nearly a third of AOL's fiscal 1994 net income. The lawsuit, filed by Palo, Alto, Calif., attorney Stephen Hagen, alleges that if an AOL user is on-line for one minute and one second, AOL informs him at the end of his session that he has used one minute and one second of on-line time, but charges him for two minutes. AOL doesn't disclose its practice of billing increments of one minute as a full minute, the suit alleges. Just got off the plane from San Diego & am VERY tired but wanted to post this so y'all wouldn't have to wait a week for news.... Saw Glenn when I was out there & unfortunately didn't get to hang with him much (he was REALLY busy with a ton of meetings with distributors, agents etc) and, sniff, we didn't make it to lunch as originally planned but I got to talk to him a bit & he says he's going into the studio in two weeks to work on a new album with Joey and that he'll be playing guitar on it. So long as he's around the band will be "Danzig". He says it WON'T be industrial but it will be a lot faster and that "White Devil Rise" will definitely be on it. And the hot line should continue. On the comic front now out from Verotik that debuted at the con: Death Dealer #1 - FINALLY!!! Verotika # 4 Satanika # 3 Sunglasses After Dark -special San Diego con ONLY ashcan edition (preview of upcoming book) Devilman # 1 - San Diego con special edition (regular edition should ship soon to stores) They also had a VERY cool poster of all the Verotik characters painted by Bisley with the saying "Heroes Come, Heroes Go, but Demons are forever". And my fav bit o' merchandizing was the little "super deformed" cute Satanika & Dalkiel figurines sculpted by Norman Cabrera. Also on display were the prototypes of two amzing resin sculptures that should go on sale in a few months - one piece is of Satanika & Dalkiel sculpted after the cover of Satanika #1 and the other is of Dalkiel done from the first splash page in Verotika #1 - both pieces are incredible & done in a perfect representation of Simon Bisley's style. (An Igrat sculpture will be in the works & also Japanese artist Nirasawa, best known for the "Creature Core" stuff in Hobby Japan, is at work on his own rendition of Satanika) Signing at the Verotik booth over the 4 days of the con were: Glenn, Devilman creator Go Nagai (all the way from Japan!), Simon Bisley, Nancy Collins and Martin Emund (FANTASTIC artist from New Zealand who will be doing a lot of their covers - the painting of Igrat from an upcoming Satanika really took my breath away!) I asked what was up with the mail order end of Verotik as I know a lot of folks never got stuff they ordered and Steven Wardlaw (new editor) told me that the "old administration" (i.e. Hart Fisher) never mailed out people's orders so he inherited several sacks worth of unfilled mail orders. They are going through and processing them now so everybody should be recieving their stuff in the next few weeks. So hang tight and hopefully you'll be getting your stuff soon. One of the highlights of the con for me was getting to meet Michael Wm. Kaluta who sold me the original design sketches for the yin/yang design on the last Danzig album. Anybody who knows me knows how much I love this design as I had it permanently marked into my skin last year and Kaluta told me he thought the tattoo was "perfect" which of course flattered me to no end. I who usually keeps her cool in front of nearly anybody came damn near close to doing a "I'm not worthy" ala "Wayne's World" in front of him as he is one of my personal gods. Also got to meet some other bible folks - Rob Flemming & Ricky Hinojos and Kristina & Elizabeth Nelly - I'm only sorry that I didn't have more time to hang with everybody!!! (Sorry if I seemesd really spacey - I was REALLY trying to focus on far too many things at once and going on next to no sleep for too many days!) First day sunny, second day o.k., rumors of the promoter getting away with the money, some bands refusing to play, no pay no play. Third day, Danzig day, rumored to be cancelled. Morning of third day, heavy rain, the festival site is a mess. My "friends" decide to leave, I have to come with them. By then I didnt know if Danzig was going to appear. Subject: Other Jerry project? I heard on alt.music.danzig (from a very reliable source who was also talking about a band featuring ex-Misfit "Caesar" :))that Jerry has a band called Evil God Revival, and will soon release an album entitled From the Heart of Darkness. Any truth to this? Vlad PS: That same person also wrote that the Misfits were of "minute musical value!" ------------------------------ From: MisfiFiend@aol.com Date: Fri, 4 Aug 1995 11:30:28 -0400 Subject: Why I got into the Misfits The reason I got into the Misfits is really close to the same reason that the guy who posted his reasons last bible- Metallica. I have worshipped Cliff Burton's music ever since I was in seventh grade (about 3 years ago), and I was always reading about how his fav bands were "Anything by Glenn Danzig". And, about a year ago when I finally got to hear Garage Days Re-Revisited, I loved the Last Caress/Green Hell covers, and then borrowed some of my friends Misfits tapes (He lent me the Legacy , Earth AD, and the Misfits tapes, cause another kid had "borrowed" Walk Among Us and Evilive, and had failed to return them before moving out of teh school district, but he got 'em back later). I loved Earth AD. So, I went out and got Walk Among Us and Evilive, conning my mom into lending me the money (She actually liked Walk Among Us. She is very liberal, even though she looks very conservative. She listens to Hendrix, Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Clapton, and other "classic' rock. Actually, she even liked Danzig II and III, but I don't theink she likes Samhain.) Ok, thanx for listening, but I'm gettin tired and gotta go.
