The way I hear it, and I speak only for myself, I hear the rythem sections that most punk doesn't have. In my opinion they are a metal/punk band. They are always heavy as hell and it's just a matter in what songs have a certain "groove". Listen to some OLD Metallica, Ride The Lightning and Kill 'Em All, and you WILL find a punk "influence" but not a punk band. Disregard newer stuff. They have always stated their New Wave Of British Heavy Metal and early punk influences, especially the Misfits. I'm a newer Misfits fan and I was attracted to the vibe the Misfits had. Not the punk that I was led to believe in like Green Day and Rancid, I hate them. Also I give Kudos to the Romones, that's the only "pure" punk that I can like and respect. As foe the Sex Pistols, I never heard them. I'll give it a shot. So all in all, I'm proudly stating my alligance to metal. I love Heavy/Classic/Trash/Speed/Goth/and the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. The Misfits are something new to me. An older band that I more recently began to dig, just like Black Sabbath. Well, the person wanted to charge me $100 per set which I thought was crazy. So, alas, I have no font which uses letters identical to those used in the Misfits logo. There are some close ones out there like "Karloff", "Bloodfeast", "Sanguinary", etc. I found them on America On-Line so I don't know what their availability outside of AOL is. If I find the creators e-mail address again, I'll post it because they're very cool fonts and make great replacements for the Misfits/"Famous Monsters ..." letter types. As for the availability of "Verotika" #1 & "Satanika" #1 from Verotik via mail order, "Verotika" #1 is sold out and "Satanika" #1 sells for $15 I believe. You can find them at comic shows but be careful because a lot of dealers will try to gouge you on these two. A while ago I saw a dealer who was selling "Verotika" #1 for something like $40 which is ridiculous. Verotik's mail order department seemingly has gotten straightened out because you can now order things w/o having to wait half a year to get your items. Before I go, I just wanted to mention that anyone looking for a cool Halloween decoration should go to one of the "Ragshop" stores and look for this little skull-faced "ghoul" wearing a black hooded-cloak w/ little green claws stretched across its chest. It looks almost exactly like a miniature Crimson Ghost. Noise triggers it and makes it laugh, light up, and shake around. It's very cool. Why the store has Halloween stuff in July is anyone's guess but anyone looking to liven up their room should pick up one of these. I cannot imagine how anyone could sit through two full days of death metal. I watched a couple of bands, and that was more than enough. The names of the bands are hysterical,though. My favorite was "CORPSICLE". Anyway, on to the good stuff. Friday night's show featured Carnivore, Anthrax, and the Misfits. Before Carnivore went on, Peter Steele was just walking around hanging out with the crowd. I thought that was pretty cool, even though he bumped into me. (Fucker, I was gonna kick his ass...NOT) As was mentioned Monday, the acoustics pretty much blow in the ballroom, so understanding vocals was next to impossible. Carnivore was OK, played about 45 minutes. Interesting to see Mr. Steele playing something different than Type O. Anthrax put on a really good show. Anyone who hasn't listened to them since the Joey Belladonna days owes it to themselves to check out their newer material. John Bush has much better stage presence, and he even sounds good on the older material. The thing I liked best was that they appeared to be having FUN on stage, something only one other band seemed to exhibit... Next was the Misfits. This is the second time I'd seen them on this tour, and they had a few problems this time. The only time you could hear the vocals was when Doyle's guitar fucked up. The mix was HORRIBLE !! The guitar was way too loud, and when that happens, it becomes very difficult to figure out which song they are playing. Michale did a good job, but seemed to be wiped out by the end of the show. Hey Mike, it's called a dye job - get one. The band seemed to be having a blast, I don't think Jerry stopped smiling the whole time. I won't get into the set list, or review further becase it's already been posted. I hope they come back to Milwaukee and play the Rave, which is smaller and has better sound. As an anti-climax, after the show ended at 2:30am, I discovered that my car had been broken into, and my stereo and cel phone were ripped off. What the fuck is wrong with people. I drive a Geo Metro, I thought that was theft-deterrent enough !! Day 2 - GWAR. This is the third time I've seen them, and I will never miss them live. They put on the best show of any band I've seen. If you have not seen a GWAR show, you have not yet lived. See them at all cost. OJ beheaded and squirting blood. Jerry Garcia killed. I decided to take a fellow fiend of mine as his going away gift(he's going to the Navy). When we were let in, the Misfits were soundchecking. After soundcheck, they walked around among the fans, and were really cool...they didn't try to avoid you if you talked to them. Jerry walked out, came up to me, and said "It's a beautiful day, isn't it." I couldn't believe how down to earth he was. Then before they went on, Jerry again came out, and signed autographs for anyone who wanted one. He walked away to set up his bass, but came back till everyone had an autograph. He said that Chud was sick, but he still ended up playing, and went to the hospital after. After the show, Jerry and Doyle came out and again signed autographs for everyone. someone asked Jerry if they planned on taking off right away, but he said that he was staying around to throw a football with the guys and his son (It was outdoors). I saw Mike Graves walking around, and approached him. He was so nice and down to earth it was awesome. I know alot of people probably don't care, but to me...this day made my life. The Misfits are a legend, my uncle introduced me to their music. And all because some record executives decided to release "fun music", "something different". Now it's everywhere, Punk Rock. It all sounds the same. It's not as extreme feeling as it used to be. It's played on the trendy stations that used to play Ice Ice fuckin Baby. And until the next fad sweeps the nation, I have to live with it. But it pains me that when it's gone I will forever look at "punk rock" differently. The only reason I excuse the bands that I listed above is because maybe they think the way I do. The first day with the Misfits, Life of Agony, and Anthrax being my faves. Carnivore was ok and Cannibal Corpse had a really good pit going so that was cool. Some of the goth bands there that had the makeup and stuff on were very cool. Overall Misfits DESTROYED EVERYONE!!! There was some problems with the sound but that didn't matter it still ruled. Afterward the band seemed really cool, CHUD stayed the longest---mainly because of the girls wanting to party with the band hehehehe. Overall that night was the best concert that I have ever been too-Mainly because I've never seen the Misfits before that. NIGHT 2: This was a pretty cool day, talked to all of the members of GWAR before the show, not realizing who I was talking to. Clutch kicked alot of ass, and GWAR was just unreal. As others said Jerry Garcia and OJ got killed, and there were aliens, and Oderus beating off into the crowd, and fire and death and destruction, and giant robots, and just alot of fun. After that GWAR people were pretty cool, I helped load some stuff for them. The whole band is the crew and the band at the same time, they load all of their stuff up themselves. Oderus was kinda hotheaded-cause some guy wouldn't leave him alone even after security kicked him out. Slymenstra is HOT, I wasn't sure if she would be or not but she was. Overall rating for the whole Metalfest thing A+ for fun factor, A+ for death and destruction, B for good band to bad band ratio, and A- overall. Also in Metal Fest Magazine-which they were handing out free here is an article on the misfits-it goes a little like this---------- The Misfits They're baaack! Originally together from March 1977 to October 1983, the Misfits earned the majority of their fans after they broke up. A few years after their breakup, Metallica gave the Misfits all sorts of plugs and when Metallica got huge, they covered Misfits anthems Green Hell and Last Caress. Hell, 8 out of 10 metal and punk bands have covered a Misfits tune sometime or another and the other 2 just don't have a god damned clue. Originally, the Misfits was founded by Jerry Only, Glenn Danzig, and Manny, who was only with the band under a year. They went through two other guitarists before officially recruiting Jerry's brother, Doyle. The Misfits went through a bunch of other drummers before splitting up. After the band broke up, everyone went their own ways, with ex-singer Glenn Danzig starting Samhain and then Danzig, and Jerry and Doyle formed Kryst the Conqueror. In 1993, they hooked up with drummer Dr. Chud (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Drummer) who graduated high school with Doyle in 1982. Chud also played in local Jersey bands Sacred Trash and Sardonica. With the idea of starting the Misfits up again, Doyle and Jerry went through all sorts of legal bullshit with the Evil Elvis money hungry rockstar, Glenn Danzig to obtain the rights to work as the Misfits again and reformed in 1995. They've replaced the Elvis wannabe with a 21 year old singer, Michael Graves, who until the day he auditioned for the Misfits , never even heard them. Graves does a fine job of pulling off the old Glenn Elvis rockabilly vocals on most of the songs and they say that he is way better than little Elvis when he was that age, so give it a couple of years and I'm sure that Michael will put greedy old Glenn to shame. The Misfits' comeback was over the course of 3 surprise performances around Halloween '95, one intended to be a listening party for a Misfits album that should have been released way back in 1988 and the other two performances during Type O Negative's encore. They've recently released a four song box set that comes in a groovy coffin shaped box and includes almost everything you need to fully appreciate the Misfits. Forget about the generic yellow skull collection CD, buy the box set. It's way worth it. They're playing all of the classic Msifits tunes and have not lost their look, sound, or attitude one bit. Their new songs are also set in the same style that we all know and love and they still sport the thick black paing rings around the eyes, skull face, and the traditional devil locks. Their cryptic stage set is greater than ever. The Misfits brand of brutal ghoul punk is on e that can not be duplicated. First, I have announced this so many times....I do not do videos. My capabilities of video to video transfer is non existant right now. If you get the Xmas 81 show and are upset that the vocals and guitars cut out every so often, I can't fix that. However, if you order 2 of the new shows and the 9:30 Club show....I will probably split the 9:30 Club show into each set and put one set on each tape. If this is unacceptable to you, send it back and I'll do what I can. Keep in mind some of these combinations that I am send have to be cut up. I think that's about it for the tape biz...... Justin--the CC censored albums do not have the regular artwork nor the lyrics printed in the books. From what I understand the actual music is not censored. Really, the two "worst" albums as far as offensive lyrics go (Butchered At Birth and Tomb of the Mutilated), have a vocal style so low and mumbly that you can't understand with the lyrics. The RECORD COMPANIES YOU SO DESPISE! THAT'S RIGHT! Record companies (and stores) place albums in categories to give you an identity so THEY can sell more albums! In other words, by saying you hate a corporate-defined genre of music, you are actually saying "my identity is so wrapped up in corporate opinions, I hate anything that doesn't fit into the nice round hole the corporations dictated as my personal tastes!" Case in point: I went to HMV (owned by RCA) to by the Life of Agony CD "River Runs Red". Much to my amazement, I located it in both the Metal and Alternative sections. When I inquired why this was so, the ever-friendly saleschick says "We weren't sure which category this particular album fits into, so we put it into both to appeal to a wider range of consumers". In other words, they put it in the alternative section so the "alternative" crowd would buy it, and put it in the metal section so the "metal" crowd would buy it. That way, the "alternative" crowd wouldn't say "ugh, another metal album" when they saw it in the metal section, and vice-versa. By placing it in both sections, HMV hopes to make it more acceptable to both crowds and therefore sell more albums (I guess they forgot that people like me actually buy CD's of any musical category for the simple fact that I like it, not because my peers or "idols" (which I have none) do). Maybe if you think long enough you will realize that if both the "punk" crowd and the "metal" crowd on this list can't settle whether the Misfits are a "punk" band or "metal" band, that maybe the Misfits fit into neither category. And, if the 'fits fit into neither category, that, concievably, there are other bands that don't as well, and that making a stupid comment like "metal sucks" shows you are more narrow-minded then any corporate salesman. The appreciation of music is a very personal thing. If you like it, listen to it. If you don't, don't listen to it. There is a free paper called the Island Ear and this week it had a picture of Doyle, a picture of Michale, and a review of the Roseland show which I had an AWESOME time at.. and I took over 60 copies of this paper, cut out all the pictures and ahnded them out and hung them on my Misfits wall, covered with old horror movie posters and Misfits autographs and pictures... You seem to be obsessed with convincing the world that the Misfits are a real group and that you know them personally. The first sign of trouble was when you claimed that Glenn Danzig sang for them. I mean, come on, Danzig singing punk!? He is simply rock and roll. There is no way he could ever be in a punk band. How could you, Mark Kennedy, drag his name in the mud like that just to try and validate your "band?" No wonder he never acknowledges the Misfits. He has never heard of them because they never existed. It was after you brought Glenn's name into your little fantasy that I started watching closely, bidding my time, waiting for more evidence against you. I knew the potential trouble you were about to become. Then, your next step was to make up some phoney photos of different "memebers" of the Misfits. I admit that it was clever to show different line-ups with explanations as to why the various members left, but its just not enough. I saw right through your little ploy. I emailed you and asked for the "Walk Among Us" vinyl, thinking you'd come up with a story about how it was already sold. to my surprise, you told me I could buy it. I figured it would never come, which would have been further proof that the band doesn't really exist. About a week later, I received a package. I opened it up and found a 12" record by the "Misfits." I listened to it, and to my surprise, there was actually music! How you pulled this off, I'll never know, but you managed to make an album just to try and convince me that this band was for real. At this point, I knew that you were on to me, so I decided to lay low for a while, watching. Then, along came the box set. With all the hype you put on it, I knew you had to be planning something like before with the WAU vinyl. Some how you managed to make this box set with over 100 songs, most of them not even on WAU, in the same form anyway, and then somehow convinced various record shops to carry copies of it. Again, I must admit that your scheme is quite elaborate and sometimes very hard to see through. Your next step was to get some more validation by having an ex-member subscribe to the list. Bobby Steele, I mean what kind of name is that anyway? It must cerainly be as made up as the rest of you Misfits stories. And then, you have the new generation of the band (reformed after 13 years, convenient number, huh?) claim to go on tour. Now this gave me further evidence against you because they started thir tour in Europe. Everyone with any sense knows that most of Europe was sunk after World War II to make way for off shore oil mining rigs. What isn't at the bottom of the ocean has either been made into hunting resorts or penal colonies. So, I knew there couldn't be a European tour. I thought I had you at long last, but then you claimed they were coming to the states and even to Atlanta, where I could see them for myself. I went, thinking I could finally prove that they didn't exist, but you were once again one step ahead and had actors pose as the Misfits and play a set. You have worked very hard at convincing everyone that the Misfits really were and are a band, but me, and I'm sure there are others out there, know waht a fake you are. You must have spent countless hours and dollars making up this whole thing, just to say that you know somebody famous. Besides tribute albums suck, usually, because band's do versions of other bands songs that either a.) sound just like the original, but not as good or b.) are some wacky "new take" on the song, which basically means turning it into some other sucky style of music, like say, Earth AD as a rap.
