Subject: THE MISFITS V. THE NEWFITS (the final discussion)
From: dave naked
Date: Mon, 07 Oct 1996 09:56:19 EDT

Well, here i sit sick as all hell, home from school...so why not write a
dum post, right? (right)...the battle of the century, THE MISFITS V.
THE NEWFITS (the final bout). You knew it was bound to come to this, and
here it is.

ROUND 1...the songs...
The misfits...we all know and love these classic tunes, and if you
dont...what the fuck are you doing here???

The newfits...hmmm, well...out of the three Ive heard, decent. "The
Hunger" sucks major dick, "Blacklight" is good, and "The Haunting" stands
up Glenn material, even tho the riff sounds way to much like "Attitude".

ROUND 2...live show...
The misfits....always put on a good live show, full of fun mess ups, and
a great changing setlist (not to many "Static Age" songs tho : ( . A
great live band.

The newfits...well, they do have a long ass set, which the misfits never
really had...but it lacks something, its to produced. Barely any
messups, everythings a bit to laid out. (For example, listening to the
9:30 from back in 82, "Die Die My Darling", over the entire ending Jerrys
screaming "Fucking Die, Fucking Die, Fucking Die...."...that would never
now). The set list (altho including basicly everything) never really
changes except for a few rotating songs. Good show, never the less.

ROUND 5...singers

Face it, altho Mikies great, Glenns just better. For looks,
tho...hmmmm...i guess Glenn wins again. Michale: shiny leather pants,
pretty cool gloves tho (if you can call em gloves). Glenn: what could
beat the skull gloves and shirt (an on occaison boots). Mike did prefect
the hair thing, something glenn could never really get right (messy
lock).

ROUND 5...ive ran out of stuff to compare, so...the decision
*********************************************************************************************

The Newfits win....why? The misfits werent our band, they exsisted for
six short years and it was over. Im sure most (okok, all) of us started
liking them after "Garage Days" and/or "Mother" (or at least "Danzig I").
Guys, as much as i love em, its a dead band. Heres a new thing Jerrys
got going...we can support them, we can go to shows (did you ever think
youd actually see the misfits????), we can get new albums.

THE RETURN OF THE MISFITS!!!! (so what if im a bit late)

btw: please excuse all typos, mistakes, nonsence...as i said i am sick,
and i dont feel like proofreading.

Was anyone there when the misfits played earlier this year at the
Troc? After the show there was a big police presence on the street.
I've been there a lot and this isn't the norm. I myself got harassed,
and I heard a story about a kid getting beat up or something. Now
they are playing there on Halloween, and Halloween being a fiend's
favorite holiday, what do you think that security will be like for
that show? My guess is that they'd beef up security after a John
Tesh concert on Halloween, just because it's Halloween, so I don't
know. Well, anyone who is going and wants to talk about it e-mail me,
or anyone who's going and just wants to talk about anything. I'm
almost positive the tickets are already on sale...

I don't know if you guys are aware of this yet. If you are, sorry bout
dat, if not, then... There's a great German video fanzine out, and there's
a ton of Misfits stuff in it.

It's called 'Madrezid Videofanzine Vol.II', and it features a lengthy
interview with Jerry (in full make-up) from the European tour in March.
There is also over 30 live tracks from that same tour, including some
soundcheck performances. These were recorded for the fanzine with Jerry's
permission.
As well as all that, there's a lot of good clips by new German bands, an
interview and performance from Tocotronic, and tons of other stuff.

I got my copy from Marco, who put the whole thing together. It costs 25 DM
if you're in Germany, and 30 DM outside.

His address if you're interested is:
Marco Frank, Sackring 49, 38118, Braunschweig, Germany.

This thing is about three hours long, it's pretty damn good.

Does this mean that sighning with Geffen has already happened? About the
record company assuring you that they won'y screw with the way that you
sound. What else are they going to say? I can only remember Geffen not
wanting to release the last Nirvana album because they didn't feel it
was as marketable as Nevermind. Eventially they broke and released in
the original form but do you want to have to go through this. I'm not
tring to say that sighning with Geffen is a bad idea. I'm in support of
it but I would just watch out.

Hey all,
Someone last issue wanted to know where I got the info on the Samhain box
set. Well from the big man himself, Glenn. I got to meet him after a
concert in April 95 and I asked him about it. He said what was to be in
it, but even then wasn't sure when it would be released because of the
demise of Plan 9. He said he was looking for a new label. About 7 or 8
months ago I emailed Eerie Von and asked him if he knew anything about it
and he said that he's finished with his side of the project (ie doing the
pictures) and that the rest was up to Glenn.
I think about 5 issues ago Mark or someone posted that Glenn said the
Samhain box was to be put off a while longer.

Hey,
In Return of the Fly Jerry uses some cool effects on his bass. This sounds
like a wah or an envelope filter or something of that nature, but I cannot be
sure. Anyone know?
Also, at the beginning of Death Comes Ripping, he does some wierd sounding
thing that I have no clue what it is. My band spent a long time trying to
figure this one out, but we couldn't so I settled on a pick slide, which I
don't think it is. Anyone know about this also?

number 138 was around long before the misfits. i'm sure sometimes it might be
a covert shout out to the misfits but i hardly think there's an underground
society of "fiends" in the entertainment industry. also verotik comics are
comics. graphic- certainly but let's not take them so seriously. if they were
such peices of trash and trying to be "passed off as" art then why would
artists like frazetta and bisley be working with them? i don't think you can

There is a magazine out now called HIGH TIMES:guide to punk in the '90s.
It has a huge article with a kool picture of the "new" group. The article
talks about how kool the misfits are and about various band members. It
says stuff about Bobby Steele and something about how he smoked pot in the
hospital, or something like that. It is the Nov. 255 issue. You should go
get it.

See, if it wasn't for me you would never know about this stuff.

Personally I like a lot of different types of music. I like
industrial: like KMFDM and Ministry. I like punk like misfits, NOFX, and
Bad Religion. I also like Marilyn Manson but I don't know what catagory he
fits into.

Subject: release dates

several have commented on the (near) coincidence of the upcoming releases
of Danzig 5 and the EARTH A.D. reissue. This has got to be the most
ridiculous example of the Glenn vs. the Misfits argument. Aside from the
fact that (as Mark pointed out) NONE of the Misfits technically have any
say when old material is reissued, some people are acting as if Glenn is
purposely putting out Danzig 5 to "steal" some of the sales of EAD (or
vice versa, with Jerry trying to compete with the new Danzig album). Not
only would this be idiotic (because Glenn will receive 40% of EAD's royalties,
so why would he WANT to curb its sales?) but it also assumes that they are
both trying to compete with each other. (Plus the fact that about 3/4 of
all Misfits, Samhain, and Danzig records have come out on or around
Halloween, so it's hardly a coincidence that two more are).

also, it was stated that the new release date of Danzig 5 will be
Novembert 6, but that may jst be the date of the Canadian domestic
release. (whereas the US-date may still be Oct. 29th; sometimes Canadian
dates are a week or two later). Does anyone know for sure?

And as for the "Michale Graves sucks" thread, too many people seem to be
judging him without actually seeing him sing. And even if you do see him,
and he sounds bad, bear in mind that not all live shows are equal; you could
see them on an "off" night, or just be in a venue with crappy sound. Too
many people see a band that they like only once, and then come away
disappointed, saying "they suck live."

BTW "Deep" kicks fucking ass.

First off I want to say, that it was really cool that Michale Graves
posted last issue, to help clear up some issues. Secondly, he mentioned
something about a possible D.C. show, could it be true? I really hope they
play D.C. again. Not to sound like an ass, but last time I posted, everyone
was arguing about the MISFITS and Geffen, and I mentioned that it would
probabaly be for distributive purposes only, and from what Michale said, it
looks as if it would be true. Another thing, everyone is dogging Glenn and
Bobby, I mean give these guys a break. A performers' music is constantly
changing, especially if they've been around for almost 20 years. Personally,
I don't think Glenn has any 2 albums that sound similar. Also, I may be the
only person on the Bible that thinks this way, but "Kryst the Conqueror" is
an awesome tape, this also shows progression of a band over time. Maybe I
just like it because I used to be a Metalhead, years ago. I bought the tape
3 weeks ago from Adam Kriney, and I lost his e-mail address, so I have to
thank him publicly, on the Bible. Thanks for all the extras and the
photocopied stuff, e-mail me if you want to talk. Back to what I was saying,
I think that the Kryst tape rules, I hope Mo decides to release the entire
album one day, and if he doesn't, I'm willing to buy a copy, if he's willing
to sell me one. Also, what ever happened to the singer for "Kryst..."? I
found a copy of the "Shocking Return" cd in a record shop in Baltimore, and
Michale is truley the right choice. Everyone keeps comparing his vocals to
Glenn's vocals from the old songs, which we're all so used to hearing, and
it's no wonder some people are disappointed with Mike, because He's not
Glenn. Get the point HE'S NOT GLENN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Glenn doesn't want
anything to do with the Misfits or us(a.k.a. Fiend club members). As for the
new songs Michale is untouchable!!!!!!!! And as far as I'm concerned he
sounds great on all of the old ones too. Besides his awesome vocals, he has
an awesome stage presence as well, and seems to be just as fan oriented, as
the other guys. Well thats all for now. E-mail me if you want to chat, I
have a very open mind, and to talk about the Misfits.

Just a few comments if I may...

He played on a lot more than 2! Bill was in the band for a brief spell in
late 1981, when he replaced Robo, and then on a full-time basis from early
1983, when he replaced Chuck Biscuits, to early 1985. He drummed on the
albums 'My War', 'Slip It In', 'In My Head', 'Loose Nut', 'Family Man', and
the 'Process Of Weeding Out' EP.

> the lyrics SUCK. No offence, but Jerry can't write lyrics worth crap.

Hate to say this, cos I love the Misfits, and I think Jerry's a great guy
and a fantastic bassist, but I think you got a point on this. The Kryst
stuff was musically okay, not spectacular, but the lyrics were awful, and
some of the new Misfits stuff is pretty bad lyrically. Don't get me wrong,
I think Blacklight and The Haunting are two of the best Misfits songs yet,
both in terms of music and lyrics, but titles like 'Talons of Steel' don't
exactly fill me with confidence. Sounds like a bad 80s metal title... I
second the motion to let Graves do the words!

Agreed. This guy is totally cool. When they played in Scotland, I stole
one of his drumsticks and then had the balls to ask him if he'd sign it for
me! He laughed like hell, shook my hand, signed it, and he and Graves
posed for pics with us. Good guys, both of them.

backstage pass to whoever pulled the craziest stunt during the show , and a
guy in a glo-go skull tee promptly charged the stage during Paranoid and was
embraced by Ozzy. Wonder if he got the pass?! Anyway , Glenn's set was about
40 minutes and he played every Misfits tune except Demonomania and ....oh ,
just kidding!! From the other reviews I've seen of this tour , he played the
same set he's been playing. The musicianship was really good and the energy
was outstanding , but the SOUNDMAN SUCKED!! It's pretty fucking bad when the
backup vocals are louder and clearer than Glenn's. Sheesh!
Also , for you Angry Red fanzine subscribers , if you haven't gotten your
October issue yet don't panic - cuz I haven't mailed them. I will mail them
later this month at the same time the Halloween Special Editions go out.

Subject: 7th house promo

Well I just got my hands on the Danzig "7th House" promo, and figured I'd
deposit my two pennies as well. You ever listen to something and not
really care for it, but after a few more listens you decide that it
rocks? Well this is how I feel about the three songs on the CD. "7th
House" is pretty cool song, fast by comparison to other Danzig tunes. His
voice is so buried in the mix that I think it actually hurts the song.
It's certainly "industrial-ish" though. I didn't think that he would
add the digital effects to a song like "Hand of Doom" but it comes across
well and is a good song. I like the breaks in it. Maybe it's just
because any Sabbath song is good one. "Hint of Her Blood" is basic by
musical standards, but the vocals make the track. I think this is a
classic Danzig tune...simple riffs and slamming vocals. It's different,
the songs are so far not the same kinda thing that one would come to
expect, but change isn't always a bad thing. I like it, if you listen to it
with "open ears" I think it comes across rather well. There you have...

BTW: The new Danzig home page address is on the CD. I check it out and
it's not there yet, but if and when it happens the URL will be:

Subject: lots of stuff

Mark,

I realize I haven't been a subscriber for very long, but I have noticed a
couple of things I believe need addressing, and I put it in here because
there are certain individuals whom I believe should read this.
First, I understand that you asked to keep posts short, but in the same
issue there is a 6 page...short novel, really.
It's not just the fact that it was so long that upsets me, but it had
nothing to do with the Misfits. Why was it in here? Sure, "llama" had some
great points, but he/she wrote about Pearl Jam primarily, and other
completely non-related bands. There was absolutely no mention of the Misfits
or even the most remotely related bands like, say, Metallica. This is the
MISFITS BIBLE not a speakers corner for idealogical propaganda.
My other concern is with multiple posts. Can't people say what they need
to say in one post? Instead of sending a seperate response to every post
from last ish. read the damn thing through, collect your thoughts and
address them all at once. Well, that's all my bitching.
About derogatory remarks to Glenn (or anyone alse for that matter), Mark,
last issue you addressed this concern so I would like to apologize for my
remark about Glenn's hairline. It wasn't meant to be derisive, it was just a
lighthearted observation, but you are right in the end it would have done
nothing but upset people. Don't get me wrong, I think Glenn is great, and
every time I've met him he has been a joy to talk to, but all the same, I am
sorry. As for my post last ish., I hope I wasn't out of line, but I would
have said the same for any other of my friends.
On to the lighter side of things. Would I be able to obtain a copy of
"Deliver Us From Evil" and/or "Shocking Return" or any other quality
recordings with some or all of the new songs from the christoter(is that
spelled right?)@aol.com address you posted last issue?
And lastly, I guess I'd like to say that I'm glad Michale posted last
ish. and I hope he cleared all that garbage up.
Now look, I've become one of those long-posting morons, full of hot air I
hate so much! Oh well, sorry Mark.

Subject: Re: Misfits Bible, #240

Sorry about all those "=" and "20"'s in my last post. I have no idea how
they got there... and if they're in this one too, I'm fucking sorry.
Anyway, no one was probably able to read my post. Not that anyone would
respond to anything I said anyway, since I wasn't flaming or going
"punk is dead" or "i am a teenager who ain't scared of anything." so
this time i'll talk about something you guys seem to give a damn about:

PUNK IS DEAD!!

Yes, and that's why it's cool. It has permeated mainstream music. Punk is
now POP! That's right! Punk is popular! Oh no! I guess that means everyone
has to start listening to old Cure albums to be cool!

THE MISFITS HAVE A TEENY-TINY FAN BASE!

Untrue! Just because there are only 700 people on the bible, that doesn't
mean there are only 700 Misfits fans. Not everyone has a computer, and not
every Misfits fan wears Misfit shirts. I used to know this nerdy looking
red-haired kid who was the biggest Misfits fan in the world. He wore flannel
shirts, glasses and was an honors student... so would you kick him out of
the Pit? Probably. I'd rather hang out with him than a fucking Nazi any
day.
A couple of days ago, I went into Burger King (yeah, man, I eat at
CORPORATE ESTABLISHMENTS). I was wearing a black jacket with a tiny
Misfits patch on it. The guy behing the counter said, "So, are you a
big Misfits fan?" and I said, "Yeah, give me a fucking Chicken sandwich
with cheese, no lettuce, and large fries. Oh yeah, and anarchy and fuck
society and ROCK!!"

YES, I ATE THE FUCKING CHICKEN SANDWICH!

The truth is, if it wasn't for the whining and bickering and (god forbid)
HUMOR on the bible, there wouldn't be a reason to have it. We could just
click on the News section in Mark's pit and spend the rest of the afternoon
on the Beavis & Butthead page.

JOURNAL OF FIENDS:
I want to put something together... tell me what you think: A "yearbook"
of fiends. A zine of pictures and quotes from Misfits fans, for fans,
and maybe for the band. They'd probably like something like that. It
shouldn't cost too much to produce, all I would need is for ALL OF YOU
to send me fiendish photos... I've got a scanner, photoshop, pagemaker,
etc. PLEASE e-mail me and tell me what you think, or if it's been done
before, or how you DON'T want it done. On that note...

FREE ISSUE OF SATANIKA 0 CONTEST:
The male or female fiend who sends me the coolest picture of them or
someone they know wearing Misfits paraphanelia, doing something
HORROR related, or just being cool, wins my copy of SATANIKA #0.
I'll even mail it too you. EVERYONE WHO ENTERS THIS CONTEST GETS

I would like to give my two cents regarding the possibility of
the Misfits signing to Geffen. If the Misfits are willing to sacrifice
their integrity by leaving the punk scene and alienating a good portion
of the fans who supported them throughout the years by signing to a
major in order to gain mainstream success (MONEY!!!!), than they're
obviously selling-out in my book.

I'm sure, as usual, it's a major departure from his previous release, but I've heard the same criticism of DANZIG 1 and 2 when they first came out. I was pretty dissapointed in his last 2 CDs, so It'll be good to see him make another move. (I still say he's a scumbag . . .) TIMES SQUARE will be playing ERIE, PA on Friday, OCT 18; at HEADLINERS. I'll have more details next week. Our show in Montreal was lots of fun. Dave got kicked out of the country, so we used the drummer from the opening band, JINX as a fill in. You can imagine that it was a shaky set, but a fun time was had by all as various members of JINX and the audience joined us onstage for some songs. Despite all the shit I'd heard for years about Montreal (rude FROGS, no scene, etc . . .), It was the best time I've had at a gig in years, and the most punk as fuck scene I've experienced since '79. > From: cybernaut@mtsi.com > Subject: Re: Misfits Bible, #240 > > Does the Undead still make CDs? when will new material come out? >Is there an Undead web page? Okay, now explain WHY that's a bad thing. Sacrifice "integrity"? Alienating a bunch of bullheaded yahoos who think this kind of shit is their business? I swear, people like you convinced me long ago that to be punk you had to be an idealistic moron, something I seem to have outgrown, sorry. [long speech deleted] Fuck this. I don't care what you think and neither do they. People who listen to name callers like you end up feeding their depression and killing themselves with a shotgun. I dont give a shit who is on what label and neither should you. It's none of your business! If you can't listen to music you LIKE because it's on MTV or whatever, then you're a wimp who cares too much about what other people think of you. And I'm so sorry that the rest of the country is waking up to what cool music is all about and spoiling your exclusive little party. Alienating! Mainstream success! Jeezus! You're insane. It's like a Venture Capitalist, see? These VC's go running around Silicon Valley, looking for dudes in college who have blazing cool ideas but no money to start a company to develop and market. Then they provide capital in return for a chunk of the newly-formed company and some say about how to run it, usually in case the guy with the ideas happens to be a complete moron about running a business. In this case, Geffen is betting that if they throw a little change Jerry's (& co) way in return for selling their next album, they'll be able to tour more or better and get more people to figure out that they like the Misfits and sell a bunch of albums. They don't care about a bunch of high-school cliqueishness & 'keeping it in the scene' cos punk rockers are no better than anybody else, they're just cooler, which entails no special priveleges or anything like that, I will remind you. Jerry & co. are betting that Geffen or somebody at Geffen won't try to fuck with the band in some executive geek's opinion of 'broadening the market'. I don't think Geffen has a track record of doing that sort of thing anyway. I personally think Jerry (& co of course) have a pretty good bet there. They get more stability in the operations of their band, access to high quality studios to make it easier to record, and a bunch of help touring & stuff. Anyone think I'm insane? Rick rmcclint@Tmac.com Oh -- "If we've sold out, then where's the money?" I'm having a hard time following your logic here. How do the Misfits allienate there fans by sighning with Geffen? The act of sighning with a major label shouldn't effect you or the other fans at all. What the Misfits actually do when they are on that label might make a difference but just sighning with Geffen should not make any difference what so ever. Your are making the assumption that once they are on Geffen that they will do things differently. If that were the case than you might have grounds to say they are selling out but it would be wrong to just decide thay they will sell out just by signing with Geffen. How are they sacrificing there integrity? And what makes you think they are going to leave the "punk" scene, if there really is a punk scene. Another thing. How can you automatically think that they will have mainstream sucess? Maybee I'm being naive to think that the Misfits just will not be the next craze to hit MTV. I just can't see this happening. I don't think a band has too automatically start playing arenas when they sign with a big label. You play what you can fill and I think the 'Fits basically will always be a little bar band. They might start playing venues that are a little bigger but they will never be a arena band. This isn't a knock on them it's just what they are. In St. Louis where I live there are three major places that bands can play at. There is Mississippi Nights, the American, and the Riverport Amphetheter (In the winter really big bands play one of the stadiums but whatever). Mississippi Nights is a little bar and is a nice place to see a show because it is small and you get to be right there. The American holds a lot more people but it is still small enough that you get a feeling that you are there with the band. Now Riverport is a big place that tons of people can see a show at. This place sucks. You have seats and you can't really see very good. Now to my point. At the very best I see the Misfits playing the American theater. (Last time they came here they played Mississippi Nights). This by no means a bad place to see a show and does not take away freom the atmosphere of the show. Bottom Line, Th3 Misfits, even on a major label, will never get so big that they will stop playing little clubs and bars. This sems to be the biggest concer of people out there. It just won't happen. If the Misfits change (notice I didn't say sell out) it is there own fault. Not the record labels fault. ------------------------------ From: "Scott Palermo" Subject: penn fuckin' state Date: Wed, 9 Oct 1996 03:18:44 -0000 Anybody going to the Penn State show? First, I understand that you asked to keep posts short, but in the same issue there is a 6 page...short novel, really. It's not just the fact that it was so long that upsets me, but it had nothing to do with the Misfits. Why was it in here? Sure, "llama" had some great points, but he/she wrote about Pearl Jam primarily, and other completely non-related bands. There was absolutely no mention of the Misfits or even the most remotely related bands like, say, Metallica. This is the MISFITS BIBLE not a speakers corner for idealogical propaganda. << Oh, I bothered you? GOOD. I hardly talked about Pearl Jam, and I was using them as an EXAMPLE. Examples are useful things to help prove your point, dear. Was my post short? No. Tough shit. If you don't want to read a long message, skip it! I said what I wanted, and I recieved no negative replys, except yours. I received about 10 positive, and/or constructive messages. I replied to all of them. Hmm, in your very rebuttal, which claims my message has NOTHING to do with the 'fits.... you said not a damn thing about the 'fits either. Metallica has little to do with the Misfits, as well. This is a speaker's corner, people post here to DISCUSS things, related to the Misfits. If you aren't interested in hearing other people's words. Then get off of the list. Although, the propaganda bit is hilarious. Silly cow, I actually made arguments against myself to make my own argument more solid, and keep it from being propoganda. Who made it bad for me to have my say, and then ok for you to "clear the air". The air is fucking clear enough without you. If you want to post something bitching me or anyone else out that is fine with me. In fact, please do. But at least make a constructive argument against me. Your post is hippocritical in that "nobody talks Misfits" bit, because you didn't even say a damn thing about them either. If you have a problem with someone on this list, then EMAIL them, if you want to avoid cluttering the list. >> My other concern is with multiple posts. Can't people say what they need to say in one post? Newfits? Hallo Fiends! Blah blah blah this is my first time inscribing into the bible and I'm really nervous and incontinent. However, I felt I had to respond to Dave Naked's dissection of the Misfits v. "Newfits" (his term). Down there near the bottom of the post was the statement that "Most -- OK, All" of "us" began listening to the Misfits after Garage Days Re-re-re-revisited or the first Danzig opus. Now Mr. Naked said he was writing his entry when he was home sick from school -- high school, most likely. I'm not about to turn this into a "I was jamming with the Misfits while you were contemplating what brand of stain to christen yer pampers with" type of posting. I'm not all THAT old -- 28 -- and was turned onto the Misfits early in high school (about 83-84). Those were the days in pre-history when the only thing that went on in the front row of a Metallica show was flopping hair and flying fists. I was a devoted thrasher (Slayer, Venom, Exodus) and wanna-be punker (Flag, Jerks, DKs, Broken Bones, Agnostic, MDC DRI COC, and all of the great initial bands of the day...) A guy I worked with gave me a tape, which I only wish I still had, containing most of the tracks from Legacy and Walk Among Us -- with more than a few outtakes and alternative tracks (which I why I wish I had it still.) I was and am I die-hard Misfits fan -- I liked Samhain a little less --- Danzig and Lucifuge were both good -- and then it sort of petered out for me. I suppose all of this stuff means little to most readers, but rest assured, I Do have a point. Dave --I don't think you should feel that the original Misfits "weren't YOUR band." -- They were, and they always will be a part of what you are -- especially if you're a "Newfits" fan. For me, it was more than an epiphany --- the Misfits combined my two greatest loves -- death rock and cheesy horror flicks -- and turned out simple, fun, thought-provoking and culture inspiring music -- I'd imagine that they still do. So, the question remains --- just whose band were they, if not yours? Were they the band for kids from Lodi, N.J., who were 16 in 1980? Were they the band for anyone who collects all their 7 inches and the exorbitant prices they bring? Were they the band for we punkers who are quickly approaching old age (30?) Or are they still OUR band -- even after all this time? Satan Loves you and So Do I... D -- Kramer :<> Dk ------------------------------ Subject: misery tomb From: murdergram@juno.com (Jay C Jack) Date: Wed, 09 Oct 1996 15:30:00 EDT oh my my my how could anyone (dave naked) say that the new misfits are the better band. although i haven't heard the new incarnation yet (but soon will), i'm sure that it just doesn't have the energy. i've seen graves and he looks like a fine replacement to glenn and popular feelings seem mixed about him. but the thing best thing about the misfits was they didn't give a fuck about anything and it showed in their music. if they sound tight now, that's probably just because they had like what, a decade to practice? signing to geffen is fine by me. the independent thing is a great way to get things done but it's stupid not to sign to a major label if they give you creative freedom. that's not selling out, that's just intelligent. selling out would be what a band like greenday did. they were indie, on lookout, had a good following, and a somewhat good ethic. they go major, imbrace the media/mtv, get a stupid following, and turn into complete morons ( though i don't know how bright they were before). I hate using greenday as an example because even when they were indie they sucked, but it works nonetheless. yeah the misfits will be on geffen but so what, i doubt that they will do something stupid. besides, listen to the music, it's not exactly that catchy garbage that mtv would play. one more thing and i'll shut up, this probably isn't coherent anyway. i think that dave naked was way out of line saying "most of us here probably got into the misfits because of garage days or mother". I have never thought mother was anything special and when mother 93 hit mtv i cringed (not because it was on there but because it sucked, and all the jockboys went around blasting it from their "systems"). As for garage days, before i heard it i owned earth ad and walk among us. don't go and make that kind of generalization. i have liked the misfits since '89 when i heard a copy of mommy... dubbed on a certron tape, riding around in a nissan. that was my band, not the new guys. they've been with me for 7 great years and "they" always will. I think the noise at the beginning of "Death Comes Ripping" is so cool. I used to think it was a guitar, but I think I figured it out. It's a pick slide (or fingernail slide) done on a distorted bass guitar. It starts off slowly, catching the windings of the strings. This is the "ripping" sound. Then, it speeds up and ends on a sustained 'A' power chord. You can then hear the guitar enter over the bass' chord with an 'A' power chord with an octave in it. That's the higher sound over the rumbling bass chord. After that, the drums enter. That seems to be the way they recorded it. Experiment with slides; you should be able to recreate it. Oh yeah, while we're discussing EAD sounds. Does anyone know what Doyle used for his tone on EAD? It doesn't sound like WAU's tone. It sounds like he's using something to make his tone warbly, maybe a chorus or tremelo? Or maybe he is just putting a lot of vibrato in his attack? Any ideas would be cool. That is probably why the Misfits decided to have the Halloween show there. Normally they no dot allow stage diving there, but they did at the Misfits show. There were bouncers present, but all they did was break up the NUMBEROUS fights. Later, Mark B. The Misfits may just end up being the last band ever to play on this stage. Anyone who lives here could tell you what a great place this is to see a band play and how much it sucks that it is closing down. However, I couldn't think of a better band to play the final show, and on Halloween!!! I hope the place is destroyed in the course of the Misfits set so that the Troc can go out with a big ass bang. ( this is long, sorry) The Misfits were a " PUNK ROCK " band from Lodi, New Jersey. Punk Rock! Those two words held a great meaning once. Fine! So the Misfits sign with Geffen, but think about what will happen if they go on MTV. All of a sudden you will start to see those high-cut trendy shirts with The Chrimson Ghost or a Misfits label printed on them. Next, Skater( cock-rockers, the destroyers of punk, stupid ass faggot fuck ups who don't know shit about it's true meaning but spike their hair and say their hardcore) with Misfits shirts and ( I hate this so much) Misfit skateboard decks? Little kids with devil locks not knowing the true meaning or feeling put into years of hard work and musical talent, but saying their cool because of their new ( now trendy) hairstyle. Remember that Marylin Manson song, " Sweet Dreams" ? Well its been made into a techno/rave song, MTV has made trendy motherfuckers listen to it and going around saying its the coolest thing. Whats next a " MOMMY... " techno song. AGAIN meaning lost. D.I.Y. whatever happened to that,? Its pretty much a lost art. The music that inspired and moved a cult following will be lost forever. People grow older and change. Now think about this.... Who were the Misfits really? Glenn Danzig, Jerry Only ( and Manny ) Just a couple of " Punk Rock" guys from Lodi, New Jersey. Well i think the new Misfits ( NOT EVEN THE REAL MISFITS)are bullshit the only real one is Jerry, ( Doyle kinda ) I've heard some of their new stuff and thought it was pretty weak. Lets face it, although most of you hate him, Glenn wrote the songs. It was his words. See what you love destroyed or fight to keep whats left. Do what ever you can. Twat rock = skate rock. I have never met any of them at a signing, well actually i have never had the chance to go to a signing, they are always at bad times for me. You are right for once, about Jerry and the guys they do the same. I have to say the bible was a little bit better on 241. you know we do seem to do better when we are talking about things that are Misfits, Samhain, Danzig, horror, etc related. i do remember something to the effect that, that is why we are all here. Unless it is some kind of conspiracy by aliens. Oh if anyone catches that crazy movie called Them(not the one from 1954) 1996, its as if they tooks a bunch of parts of the X-Files and some other scifi movies and made a movie out of it. Take a look but don't say i didn't warn you. well i hope everyone has a great weekend and remember you have to have your answers for all this weeks questions in by Sunday by 10PM. Featuring 14 different Misfits tunes performed by 14 different bands (each band selected their own song), this album will be available on LP, CD, and Cassette. As usual, there will be a limited color vinyl pressing on 3 different colors. The actual colors and numbers will not be announced until a few months AFTER the album is released. Caroline will begin promotion in mid-November with postcards and posters with national advertisements in magazines in January. The people at Caroline, especially Tom Bejgrowicz (executive producer), are really excited about this. I've EARTH A.D. ---------- Yes, it's being reissued on October 29, 1996... but there's a twist. First, all Plan 9 logos have been replaced with Caroline logos. Second, this CD is on a standard silver CD (as opposed to the original press of 15000 gold CDs in April 1992). The album cover graphic will also be on the actual CD itself, with some purple coloring. Third, an extremely limited pressing (886 copies) will be distributed with the original Plan logos... these 886 copies were pressed in 1994 and are identical to the 1992 press except for the fact that they are standard silver CDs... start looking now. > From: "Whittle, Patrick R." > Subject: geffen move stupid > why? they have nothing to gain but money, and after they spent so much > time they were just doing it so they could be the Misfits again. > and it's not like they'll get any new fans. think about it...did the > Circle Jerks get any new fns when they signed to Mercury? and they are > a lot cloer to being mainstream acceptable than the misfits ever will be > ya know. it's just not gonna work. i don't understand it. Ever hear of distribution? Think about it. Look at it this way - The members of the Misfits have families to support and lives outside of the band. At this time, they are doing everything themselves - booking shows, distributing records, maintaining the Fiend Club, and writing/recording music, among other things. Having a major distributor will take the load off them and also get their stuff out to all the fans, whether they're in New Jersey, South America, or Sweden. I get e-mail messages and letters all the time from fiends all over the world asking if Misfits stuff has come out yet. It takes a LONG time for stuff to get overseas. Some of you are lucky enough to be right on the east coast of the US and have seen the band 5-7 times. Some people will NEVER get to see them and might have to wait months to find a copy of the new album. It sucks for them. Let's just ask the fiends in Europe and Japan how THEY feel... There were several reasons that the band (don't blame Michale just because he's the only one with e-mail access - this was a BAND decision) decided to go with Geffen. There's no reason it can't work out. I still have all the Misfits postcards from last time... I'll also send extras to anyone who can supply me with info on the latest Four Horsemen album, or whichever album from '94 had Chuck Biscuits on it. mark ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Oct 1996 23:08:47 -0400 From: dirt Subject: Collector's Here are the videos I have, including the year and approximate length. Well as always, I am still making copies of the Creepy Compilation and the *Bible-only* "Evil is as Evil Does" compilation. These videos are two hours long apiece and are easily some of the best quality stuff out there. I've been providing this service to Misfits Bible members for about a year and a half now, so rest assured that I know what I'm doing... Each video costs a mere $10 ppd each (US only - foreign fiends write for rates) and you can get your own copy(s) by sending your address and payment to: Brent Eyestone 478 East Beaver Ave Apt 211 State College, PA 16801 Questions, etc ---> (814)861-8240 Now on to something else... I've been getting a lot of email about this, so let me make it clear - the Misfits are not playing at Penn State, they are playing in downtown State College at the Crowbar (NOT ON CAMPUS). For those of you travelling to the show, I must warn you that if you are under 21, the space provided for you is incredibly small. It's about the size of a small dorm room and so naturally, you can expect to get hurt (especially since Dave Wells just loves to oversell as much as possible). If you are over 21, you are allowed in the upper portion of the bar and you should be able to see things fine. Simply put, if you are under 21 and headed to State College on October 29, you run the risk of getting hurt (the bouncers love to beat ass at the drop of a hat) and also the risk of not getting to see the band because of the limited space. Don't get me wrong, you will get into the club, but given that the club is on three tiers (upper level is 21+, middle/stage level is all ages BUT TINY, bottom level is all ages BUT YOU CAN'T SEE THE STAGE), chances are you're going to be stuck on the bottom level because it's the largest area. I'm not saying don't go to the show, I'm just saying don't be surprised if you feel ripped of by the Crowbar upon completion of the Misfits' set. Just as a side note, two years ago, this club was called "Tattoo," it was hot pink on the outside, and booked solely glam rock. Now we have the same management, just different agenda$. I just feel it's fair you should know ahead of time... Submissions must be received by me by FRIDAY, NOV. 15. i can only put up to 6 bands on the EP if the songs are short. right now, i've decided on two bands definitely. if you wanna be on it, get off your ass and send me a tape. i'll listen to it and if i like it, i'll ask you for a DAT of the tune and all the credits and whatnot. this project is coming outta my own pocket, so if you want people to hear your band, you'll never get another chance like this again, cuz i give enuff shit away for free with my own band, ADAM WEST. by the way, ADAM WEST will not be on the EP; this is for the bible listers. i'll probably press 300 on colored vinyl and sell 'em for $4 postpaid. what a fucking deal! now get moving! -- * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Jake Starr/ADAM WEST * Fandango Records * 1805 T Street, NW #A * Washington, DC 20009-7128 * (202) 483-0065 * eMAIL: jyas@loc.gov * http://www.access.digex.net:80/~yield/adamwest.html * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Oct 1996 13:20:15 -0700 From: KLRWLF Subject: Enough Already!!! Hey feinds, I think all of us are sick of hearing about the Geffen Signing already!! I know it's related to the Misfits, but when so many posts are about your opinion of the fits signing to Geffen, I wonder if the name should be changed to the Geffen Bible. I think it's about time we stop talking about this now!! We have read just about every opinion possible on this subject. When someone posts about it, chances are, we have already heard what they have to say. So let's cut this shit out of here!!! Greg.....thanks for the picture of what the MB shirt will look like!! I'm sure everone will be happy with it, I thought it looked Great!! R.I.P. First you say they won't get new fans by signing to Geffen, then you say they will play in big arenas? Hello? The 'Fits won't book places they don't stand a chance of filling! I think Geffen's distribution and advertising are likely to pick up at least a couple people who like the idea. > From: JGellis100@aol.com > The Misfits were a " PUNK ROCK " band from Lodi, New Jersey. > Punk Rock! Did you ask them? I think they were outcast in every society. > Those two words held a great meaning once. Fine! So the Misfits sign with > Geffen, but think about what will happen if they go on MTV. > All of a sudden you will start to see those high-cut trendy shirts with The > Chrimson Ghost or a Misfits label printed on them. Next, Skater( > cock-rockers, the destroyers of punk, stupid ass faggot fuck ups who don't > know shit about it's true meaning but spike their hair and say their > hardcore) with Misfits shirts and ( I hate this so much) Misfit skateboard > decks? Little kids with devil locks not knowing the true meaning or feeling > put into years of hard work and musical talent, but saying their cool because > of their new ( now trendy) hairstyle. THIS HAS ALREADY HAPPENED!!!! Skaters wearing crimson ghost shirts were around MY high school in 1986! We all know 'Fits skate decks were out before that! Samhain had a BIG skate rat following! Thrasher Magazine covered all kinds of punk rock stuff! They could even be blamed for spreading the word... What the hell is 'high cut trendy' anyway? Izod Lacoste? Don't fuck with little kids with devilocks! Maybe they just _WANT_ to learn! You weren't BORN with all those Misfit albums in your hand, you know. > Remember that Marylin Manson song, " > Sweet Dreams" ? Well its been made into a techno/rave song, MTV has made > trendy motherfuckers listen to it and going around saying its the coolest > thing. Whats next a " MOMMY... " techno song. AGAIN meaning lost. "Marilyn Manson song"? How much do you exactly know, and have you ever heard of the Eurhythmics? A "Mommy" techno song would be cool, maybe I'll do it just to annoy you! > D.I.Y. whatever happened to that,? Its pretty much a lost art. The > music that inspired and moved a cult following will be lost forever. DIY is alive and weller than you know. The fact is that the fringe has moved farther out. DIY is alive and well in ALL KINDS of stuff, from blues/country to that techno you seem to despise. DIY is so big now you can't tell sometimes. > Who were the Misfits really? Glenn Danzig, Jerry Only ( and Manny ) > Just a couple of " Punk Rock" guys from Lodi, New Jersey. Well i think the > new Misfits ( NOT EVEN THE REAL MISFITS)are bullshit the only real one > is Jerry, ( Doyle kinda ) ROBO's not a real Misfit? "Doyle kinda" my ass he was in the band with Glenn. The Misfits are a group which, under the leadership of Glenn Danzig, went through a number of members and style changes until Glenn decided he did not want to continue under the name. After a long time, two of the members of the band at that point received permission to continue on under the name Glenn abandoned. Would it help you if you thought of the 'newfits' as a Misfits cover band with permission to use the actual name? That included two original members? >I've heard some of their new stuff and thought it > was pretty weak. Lets face it, although most of you hate him, Glenn wrote the > songs. It was his words. SKaters and people who > watch rancid, green day and mtv are not PUNK ROCK> Doesen't mean they can't like a certain record when they hear it. You generally sound very jealous of something or another. What exactly is being destroyed? Dreams? Your little punk rock pity party? Your exclusive "Members Only" status? MY records still sound the same, thank you, and the recordings are the part about the Misfits that I like the best. What exactly are you going to fight? > P.S. IDEA why not make Misfits Videos ( o.k. idea ) but make them available > to fiend club members only and no one else that include moron television, and This happened already, too! Misfit Videos were (practically) available only to people who read classified ads in Maximumrocknroll! I do believe 1. Glenn was right to end his involvement with the name "the Misfits". His evolving style was going too far from what he had done under the name 'Misfits'. If I'm feeling real picky I might argue he should have dropped "Misfits" before Earth AD and Wolfsblood. 2. I agree that the Misfits were Glenn's brainchild and he not only wrote very interesting lyrics but was able to sing them with power and conviction that are rarely matched. 3. You already know you don't like what you've heard of the latest Misfits. I'm not so lucky, I haven't heard any yet, so I don't know. But I doubt that I'll start screaming about skateboarders and MTV and corny stuff like that even if I think the new stuff sucks camel dong. "Settle down, Beavis!" is about the best advice I can give you. > From: "Dorin M. Petre" > > I thought the pick slide sounded good, Nick.. Definately pick slide. > Same with "somnambulance" in NOTLD. Means walking in your sleep. I've heard this word many other places. I _REALLY_ don't think it's made up. "If we've sold out -- then where's the money?" appears on my yellow vinyl Government Issue record, on the vinyl right next to the label. hey, is there a technical term for those words scratched next to the label? CU Fiends, Yes its a long post. NO distorted vocals. the music sounds like NIN's closer a bit, but glenn's voice is the beat i ever heard it on this one. overall: i like it. it isn't your standard glenn power album where the voice carries you through. in fact in a couple songs (blackacidevil) you can't hear the man's voice at all. some songs are industrial just to be industrial (serpentia), but what can you do. there are some real jewels on hear, IF you like (and it's a big if) industrial music. it's a lot more techno sounding than deep...and i thought that was off the beaten path. all of the semi danzig fans would be wise to borrow a copy of it before you shell out $$$$ also, no white devil risin which dissapointed me. ------------------------------ From: Mark Allen Blackman Subject: New Misfits Songs on Cassette Date: Fri, 11 Oct 1996 17:20:21 -0400 I just got a cassette I ordered from someone from the Bible. It is a complitation of the four new Misfits songs they played during their Spring/Summer tour. They are from live shows but the quality is much much better than I was expecting. Supposedly, the songs were recorded from teh sound board and then doctored up as much as possible. Its nice have a collection of the songs to hold me over until the new album. Here are the new songs.
