Basically this was the outcome of the lawsuit settlement with Glenn: Jerry, Doyle, Frank and Robo finally received some sort of royalties for past Misfits sales. They didn't receive anywhere near what they theoretically deserved, but it was $$ in their pockets. Previously, only Glenn had received $$ for Misfits sales. Bobby, Joey, Arthur, Manny, and Mr. Jim did not receive anything because they wouldn't agree to join them in the lawsuit. In Googy's case, he had settled with Glenn long ago. Manny probably wasn't even contacted since none of them know where he's been for the past 15 years. Glenn sold all the original master tapes to Caroline, thus he profited as well from the lawsuit. At this point, Caroline makes all final decisions on what may be released. The Misfits (Jerry, Doyle, and whoever else joins the band) can only suggest to Caroline what should come out next. It is my understanding that nothing from the Horror Business lineup (Bobby and Joey) will ever be released again. Glenn recorded over a lot of the old parts and most of the songs from that period are readily available elsewhere from different recording sessions. Both Glenn and the current Misfits can make any other Misfits merchandise. However, Glenn can not use their faces on his products and they cannot use his. That's why for the time being, you will probably never see a 'real' shirt with all their faces on it. When I said that I suspected Glenn had something to do with the cancellation of the Static Age LP and Xmas album, I meant that I only suspect it. According to what i understand, there is no way Glenn could stop the release of the Static Age album. However, since the Live Xmas album contained overdubs done long after the recording was made, Glenn might have some voice in its release. Since the Teenagers CD Single was going to include 2 songs form the Xmas album, I can understand why it was cancelled, if Glenn did indeed object as he told EVB he would. I suspect that the Teenagers 7" single was pressed and if the box set comes out in early '96 (as Caroline said) I'm sure it would be included in that. For now, we can only wait. I hope this clears up some questions... mark ------------------------------ From: evan obrien Subject: another thought - we are 138 interpretation Date: Wed, 6 Sep 1995 13:36:21 -0400 (EDT) ok, i was just thinking about the comment on we are 138 meaning we are omnipresent, etc and here's my take: i was thinking this, take the numbers one, thirty, eight and count the letters in each word and you will get (3) (6) (5) 365? maybe we are 138 means we are 365, like we are always, 365 days, every minute, like maybe it meant evil or something is always there, you know, it never goes away, it just waits for opportunity... this is just a thought, and you might think it's ridiculous, but if you have a comment, let me know at: obrien81@matrix.newpaltz.edu "marilyn lying on her bed, face all turning blue" "check into room 21, all the bitches gonna have their fun" ------------------------------ From: She Subject: Re: Misfits Bible, #100 Date: Wed, 6 Sep 1995 13:46:58 -0400 (EDT) > From: Michael Link > > is there a faq sheet somewhere? Well, what Eerie said 2 weeks ago, and what Steve Zing was told by Glenn a few days ago seem to be totally different things. For the record Steve said 2 months from the end of August. > From: WickedKingWicker > > stuff, "older than most of the people here [at opening]." someone asked > him what 138 was and he said something like "its like using a number > instead of a word" didn't go into anymore detail... i heard it meant the > equivilent to we are omnipresent but thats just what i heard. anyways This has been discussed at least 2 other times. 'We Are 138' refers to having a number instead of a name. It's based on the movie THX1138 which was George Lucas's first. It has no fancy strange meaning. There will be TWO compilations released during the winter (or maybe early spring) He didn't know what the configuration would be (caroline wont say). BUT they did say that all the stuff that was to be on the Static Age album will be released. At least this is what caroline says. What I personally think this is was Caroline's attempt to cash in by splitting the release in two, then adding other tracks (arguably worthwhile too... hopefully including Cough/Cool & She) Instead of the one album. This might be a way to also release the best of the Walk Among Us alternate takes plus singles and the Static Age stuff. *shrug* Anyhow, I will call Caroline next week (or so) regarding this and various other stuff and essentially try to bug the info out of them :) So it appears that the whole issue of Glenn might be not the issue. I don't have the money to buy original releases so I was looking forward to get non-bootleg Misfits vinyl at under $5 a piece. My suspicions were first aimed towards Glenn, but now that I've thought about it, I highly doubt he had all that much to do w/ Caroline nixing the releases. First of all, I agree w/ what EVB told me. Even Eerie Von himself was looking forward to the new releases and didn't say anything to her about any cancelations. He talks regularly to Joey Castillo on how the upcoming project is going and Joey didn't say anything about the cancelations. If Glenn had anything to do w/ it, he probably would've told someone about his plans, most likely friends who he talks to regularly (like Eerie or Joey). Second, according what Mark was saying about Glenn not having any real say in what is released and what isn't, well, Glenn might complain and get pissed, but he has no control over whatever deal Caroline and Jerry Only and Doyle may have had. Third, Glenn just doesn't seem to care about the Misfits at all anymore. He doesn't like to talk about them, he doesn't like to hear about them (take it from me ... ). To him, the past is the past and should stay that way. As long as they don't put his picture on the thing, I don't think he really cares what's put out. Who knows why the releases were cancelled. I just hope the tracks (like "Last Caress", "Horror Hotel", etc.) that have only been released on original vinyl or on horrid bootlegs come out in some form pretty soon, either on another compilation or whatever, so all of the fiends like myself can enjoy them ... - BILE666. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Sep 1995 15:48:40 GMT+1000 From: Cyberted Subject: Re: Misfits Bible, #101 To: Techno Destructo > > I THINK GLENN IS FUNNY. He's a really cool guy. He showed me all the riffs and fills for "Return Of The Fly." (The tab on the Misfits page is wrong.) He told me that sometime he would also show me the fills for "She", but I had to show him how to play "Spinal Remains" -- apparently he forgot. It was a lot of fun. He said that the Misfits will be in Boston Oct. 1, and he gave me his brother's phone number so we could hook up (he said he wanted to check out Mama Kin -- the new Aerosmith bar.) Anyway, we talked a lot about the Static Age LP and Caroline Records, as well as Max's Xmas LP. (BTW - there are two new Misfits shirts: a glow in the dark Crimson Ghost and Max's Xmas - (Crimson Ghost in a Santa Clause costume.)) He told me that Glenn Danzig was most likely the one to stop Static Age from coming out because he was threatening to take all the old Samhain stuff away from Caroline. Jerry said that Static Age is by far THE BEST MISFITS RECORDINGS EVER!!!!! Apparently Glenn dubbed over the bass in all the stuff on Legacy, which needless to say pissed off Jerry. Also, he hinted at another release that we might see come out sometime -- The Earth A.D. sessions featuring all the music (which he says is really rockin) but no lyrics (i.e. Halloween III/Queen Wasp). He's also trying to get the rights from Walk Among Us back from Slash Records and has a painter in Cape Cod redoing the Walk Among Us cover. From the sound of it it's gonna be one the best Misfits shirts yet. About Dave Vanian -- he hasn't said yes or no yet, and that's what they're waiting for. So he's their number one choice. After that he said that there's a local person and someone else from Long Island that they're looking at. And I know a lot of you don't want to hear this, but, don't be surprised if some of the new Misfits stuff sounds like Kryst The Conqueror. He mentioned how Doyle's gotten a lot better and wants to do more "creative" things on the guitar, and they also want a singer that get up to those high notes. After always listening to Glenn sing with the Misfits, it'll be weird to hear high notes in their songs. I wouldn't fret too much, at least they're not bringing that guy from Yngwie Malmsteem (Kryst The Conqueror) back to sing! Mark: Jerry wants to talk to you about heading up the fan club, give him a call. Also, he requested that you fax some issues of the Misfits Bible to Caroline monthly, so they can keep up to date as to what's going on in the Misfits Universe. -Jody ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Sep 1995 15:46:32 +0100 From: Stewart Gallacher <9243471g@udcf.gla.ac.uk> Subject: 3 HITS FROM HELL poster I was at a large record fair in Glasgow at the weekend and I was pleased to find an original "3 hits from HeLL" promo poster. It's unfortunate that AOL allows users such as you to access the internet. I had the misfortune to view both of your World Wide Web pages and witness your immaturity. How old are you? 12? 13? What is your fascination with Satan? Are you trying to scare someone? You're ridiculous. Grow up. Neither of you have any right to call yourselves fans of the music of the Misfits, Samhain or Danzig. I've seen Danzig1234's various posts to the Danzig newsgroup in which he lied about the Misfits videos he had for sale. $60 for a video is a horrendous rip-off, especially when everybody's already got the video you're attempting to sell. Who do you think you are? And then after being scolded by your fellow fans you quickly lower the price to $20. What a piece of living shit you are. You probably don't have anything for sale anyway. And what is this bullshit called DevilMagic news? Where is it? Does it cost money or not? Are you out to make a quick buck? Do you think there's something you can offer that we can't get somewhere else (this list for instance)? It would be nice if you grew up, but I suspect you'll just turn around and flame me. Of these, the most important are, of course, Jerry Only and Doyle. Besides them, the only other guests that attracted my interest are Rudy Ray Moore (from "Dolemite" fame), Roger Corman, and Dolores Fuller (one time girlfriend of Ed Wood and star of "Glen or Glenda?"). Anyone who has gone to the Chiller shows over the years (they're held twice a year, one in October and one in April/May) know that they are the best of their kind around. They're much, much better than the over-inflated Fangoria shows (take my word on it). Tickets are available in advance at $10 a day or $20 for a 3-day pass. Tickets are $13 each at the door each day of the show. For more information, you can call Chiller Theatre, Inc. at 201-402-1680. It's a really good time. The set-up that the Misfits had there was very cool. A cemetary scene w/ gargoyle-topped pillars, tomb stones, and wafts of smoke. They're a rock/ska band kinda like the Bosstones, and they cover "Teenagers From Mars"! It's pretty cool, and they also do a version of "Pass the Dutchie"! 2: While in Seattle recently to see the Ramones, me and my friends were playing "count the rock-shirts" from up in the bleachers. Jimi Hendrix had the most shirts (there was a big memorial concert going on the next day), and i figured the 2nd most popular shirt would be Rancid or GreenDay - but no! everywhere i looked were Misfits shirts, jackets, tatoos!! I saw an awesome LOB hooded sweatshirt, a pretty old looking Samhain shirt, and a really cool leather jacket with the November Coming Fire cover painted on it! Lots of other shirts too that weren't your average Misfits Ts. 3: I don't know if these Misfit "sightings" have been reported before but here's one i just came across in a comic i bought at a junk store. It's in Vol. 2 Number 4 of "Doc Stearn...Mr. Monster" - published by DarkHorse Comics Nov. 1988. The first page shows a little demon-kid wearing a Samhain shirt and listening to "Die Die My Darling" on a ghetto-blaster. At the back of the book is a seperate story about a zombie-hunting punk named Cadavera who's wearing a Misfits T-shirt. Also, a friend was telling me about an episode of Saved By The Bell where Jesse's tough New York cousin has a big Misfits poster on his wall - anyone else seen this? 4: Everyone's been wondering about what 138 stands for, well - i'll tell ya! After seeing a KISS tribute band one night, i stopped in at 7-11 on the way home to get a drink. I bought a can of iced tea and the cost (after deposit and applicable sales tax) was - are you ready? - $1.38 !!!!!! As you are aware, Caroline has recently purchased the Misfits catatlog and intends to release all the remaining recordings by the band. We are bound by both our deal with members of the band as well as our own ethics to work together with ALL these members. As you can imagine, this is not easy, as everyone has a different perspective. As fans of the band, we are extremely excited about releasing "Static Age". Although we had intended it as the next offering from the band, we were convinced that the long-pending "Collection II" should come out this Fall, followed by the release of a box set of recordings in early 1996. "Static Age" will be released in some form (as part of the box?) in the same year. I agree that it is a good idea for Caroline to keep in touch with Misfits fans of all ages and stripes. Obviously, we cannot make everyone happy all the time. You,in particular, are disappointed about the delay in "Static Age". Nonetheless, this delay is not a "mistake" on our part, but an effort to present the band in cooperation with its members. If you could send me the list, it would be very much appreciated. I just got my free copy of the Fall '95 I Hear Ya Caroline Distro sampler in the mail. I know everybody has talked about what it LOOKS like - actually, if Jerry and Doyle are strangling "someone's *sister*," that is the ugliest female I've ever seen - but I figured I'd tell you what it SOUNDS like. I can tell you this, it sounds far superior to ANY of the previous recordings (quality wise). Obviously, the bass is MUCH livelier than previous "TFM" versions with the Glenn overdubs. But the aspect I found much more to my liking was the background yells and vocals - THEY'RE IN KEY!!!! The previous versions were just random yipes and barks as I'm sure you well know. Overall, it's a very solid piece that sounds as if it was just recorded today (meaning that the fidelity and clarity are impressive). If this is any indication of what Static Age will sound like, we will be getting our money's worth! Going back to the sleeve (For further detail), it looks a lot like the picture of J&D strangling Mark on his web page! They've got this guy wearing a Mule t-shirt in a big ol' chokehold, Doyle's got a devilock down below his collarbones and looks as massive as ever. He's wearing a Crimson Claus Misfits shirt (Sleeves and collar ripped) and on top of that, his sleeveless leather jacket complete with spikes. Jerry's showing a little age/stress as that hairline keeps pushing back... his lock is at his chin. In the cheese department, he's got arm tassles and black makeup under his eyes. He's also got the sleeveless leather jacket with studs. Oh yeah, don't forget the black athletic wristbands on the two of them...(and the evil, "menacing" frowns w/ both rows of teeth showing). You've got to hand it to them, they've held onto this image for one hell of a long time (I know I'd have grown sick of it by now!). But that says a lot about their integrity, I suppose. Well, I guess that's all I can say about it...the back cover is just some guy wearing a viking helmet. Oh, for those worried about paying lots of $$ for it only for one song, it's also got Doc Hopper, State of the Nation, 88 Fingers Louie, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Shift, Capsize 7, Crash Worship, Controlled Bleeding, Hole, Mustard Seeds, Wolverton Bros., Mick Farren/Jack Alexander, Combine, Monkeywalk, and Da Peace Funk on it. Maybe this will help you in your decision whether or not to buy it or to wait. Take care - Brent p.s. I must say to all of those individuals taking the whole devil-worship/evil/kick-ass-in-the-pit theme literally and "seriously"...calm down and be yourself. You are not a walking rock lyric!!! I have that interview on tape. He and the DJ (I don't know her name off hand) played SO many songs (the ones they were allowed to at least). It was something insane like almost 2 hours straight of the Misfits and interviews w/ Jerry (w/ a "Mighty, Mighty Bosstones" (uggghhhh!) song mixed in there for some reason). He also played some songs off of the "Max's X-Mas" album like live versions of "Horror Business" and "Hollywood Babylon". He said on the album was a track of Glenn singing "Blue Christmas" but didn't want to play it because he was afraid it'd get bootlegged off the air. Jerry talked about his and Doyle's relationship w/ Glenn, their upcoming comic book, "The Book of Cruel", and all sorts of other things. It was very cool. I was broadcast the night before my lab final so I had to choose which to give my full attention to: studying or listening to Jerry Only ... needless to say, Jerry and the Misftis won out ... It is so nice to be back on-line after leaving the nest of free university services. Anyway, I have three questions for anyone who knows anything. I have tried to read as many bibles as I could to ensure these have never been covered, but excuse me if they have. First, does anyone know why Return of the Fly was never released on anything? Was it just a song that would have been on the 'fits next album had there been one, or was it intentionally a bootleg? Second, anyone know what the letters in the song "cwn awnn" (or something like that) on Black Aria stand for? Just wondering. Finally, does anyone know what instrument makes the eerie humming noise on Halloween II?(as you can see I know little about instruments and shit) I have the version on the Beware and the rest boot, and anyway, the sound reminds me of this thing we have in our house. Anyone ever seen those coffeepots called the "Whistler"? They are glass pots that you boil the water in and when the it is done the steam rises through a hole in the top and makes a shrieking howling noise. Anyway, it sounds just like this and I hate it cuz every time I listen to the damn song all I picture is that damn coffeepot on my stove. Oh well. I just got my copy. I paid $5 for it instead of the $20 collectors price that some people have had to pay. In case you haven't checked out the page yet, there are 6900 copies of these in existence. They were pressed in 2 sets - one set in August of 5000 and a set in September of 1900. Both pressings are identical. The tune Teenagers From Mars that's on this CD sounds identical to the Static Age version that's out there on demo tapes. The quality sounds better (obviously) than even on the Teenagers 7" single from '78. Static Age is going to be the best album ever. All the songs sound wonderful. The bass comes through even more strongly than the guitar. Static Age and Come Back sound especially good. It's really too bad the album has been postponed until 1996. In case it wasn't clear, it WAS Glenn who intervened and caused Caroline to cancel the stuff that was going to be released: o Teenagers From Mars, scheduled for 9/19/95 release - cancelled o Static Age LP, scheduled for 10/31/95 release, postponed until '96 o Max's X-mas, cancelled Instead, we're going to get the Collection #2 and box set that he was originally advertising back in '87-'88. In fact, I wouldnt' be surprised if he starts selling the rest of the skateboards as soon as the Misfits (Jerry and Doyle) start getting promotion going strong. Collection #2 will have some killer stuff on it though, so maybe it's a good thing Glenn had his stuff put out first. I was led to believe that the song "Mephisto Waltz" was never actually recorded by the MIsfits. According to Caroline, it will be on the Collectoin #2. I just broke my stereo so i can't listen to it for awhile, but i have a few ideas what it might be. 1) a guitar-you could get a sound like that by doing some studio trickery to the sound of a guitar, keyboard, whatever 2) a theramin-Invented in the early part of this century, a theramin makes a cool/creepy sound. It looks like a wooden box with 2 metal rods sticking out of it. You wave your hands over the rods to get the sound. The sound is in just about every monster movie from the 50's. It's also in the intro to the outerlimits t.v. show. Jon Spenser, Matthew Sweet, Led Zep, Pixies, and the Cramps have used a theramin live or on record. This song was just like the rest of the Static Age recording. Glenn never found a good place to release it. He originally intended to release it on the Legacy Of Brutality CD (not LP or cassette) as stated in the All Hell BReaks Loose radio show from May 13 1986. However, it just never happened. There are other songs from the Static Age sessions that weren't released. Teenagers From Mars (the version with Franche') was recorded and only came out on the acetate 7" single of which there are only 5 copies. Children In Heat was recorded and is still sitting somewhere on a tape never to be released. Luckily we have the version with Bobby. There was a song from the 80's called "I Got A Right" that they never released. It was a cover song, but they still recorded it, according to Glenn. Also recorded was a song called "Mephisto Waltz" which we'll finally get to hear in November. Glenn was talking about this song as far back as June of '86 in the famous Thrasher article many of us have. > 2nd, anyone know what the letters in the song "cwn awnn" (or something like > that) on Black Aria stand for? Just wondering. They don't stand for anything. Glenn is a religious scholar. Cwn Anwnn comes from Celtic mythology. > Finally, does anyone know what instrument makes the eerie humming noise on > Halloween II?(as you can see I know little about instruments and shit) It's an effect that Bobby did with his guitar. Notice I say Bobby. Bobby did the guitar on the demo version of this song (from the MSP demo session) and this demo later turned up on the Halloween 7" (even though Doyle was in the band) with a different drum beat. > From: "J. If you don't have the ability to access the Web. let me know I will email it to you. Please all other people get it off the web pages, I can't keep up with my mail as it is!!! I'll post a reminder here when the contest is ready.--------C.G. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Oct 1995 21:55:24 PDT From: David Greco Subject: Re: rip magazine Just a little tid-bit of info. The second could be for all the newbie assholes 14 year olds who have nothing better to do but bitch at each other call each other cocksuckers and talk about listening to the Misfits on the shitter. It's nice to see you losers are the future of our country. And sorry to bitch, but please do read the homepage and as many old Bibles as you can before posting, because if I see one more person write "Did anyone see the Misfits poster on Saved by the Bell"?, I think I'm gonna rage. On a serious note, thanks to all who answered my questions last Bible about Return of the Fly, cwn anwnn, and Halloween II. I appreciate it.
