Yes, I smoke on occasion, like when I drink (which is not an everyday thing) and on rare occasions when I desire a good Cuban cigar (which, unfotunately, are not available in your country. Another example of the U.S. dictatorship). I suppose you could call me a "smoker" as long as I could call you a "drinker", even if you only drank a couple beers a month. I smoke not because I am a chronic, addicted, or brainwashed, but because I enjoy it. Maybe you have never touched a tobacco product in your life. Fine. However, some of us have and found we enjoy it. I am a firm believer that the decision to smoke or not to smoke, much like any other important decision, should be MINE, not someone else's to make for me. Now before you start jumping on the "but it's killing you and other innocent people" bandwagon, let's look at alcohol. Alcohol is responsible for more death, misery, and despair than any other drug known to mankind (or womenkind, for the politically correct). Take a look at statistics for drunk driving, spousal and child abuse, heart disease, liver damege, kidney failure, and the chronic alcoholics who have lost everything in the quest for another empty bottle. The streets of every major city in both the U.S and Canada are full of them. The North American Indians, long before the Europeans ever came here, used tobacco. It was never responsible for any social ill. However once they were introduced to alcohol, it caused a downward spiral from which they, as a race, have never recovered. Take a look at any northern Canadian city for a good example of what I'm talking about. However, I have never heard of any of you advocating the ban of alcoholic products. Why? It is a far worse evil than tobacco. Could it be because you enjoy drinking? Think about it. Apparently some of you (specifically America Online and military subscribers) are receiving the bible in 2 parts. One part seems to be a smaller header message and the other is a downloadable attachment file. Please understand that I send the bible out as one message. There are no file attachments involved. The problem has to do with your particular server, or your mail editor. Some servers do not allow messages to exceed a certain limit - therefore they break the message up. I can't do anything about this except suggest that you find a new server. Issue sizes have increased greatly in the last 6 months or so and they will probably continue to increase. I've also been having a lot of problems lately with disappearing subscribers. I get about 20-30 bounced messages with every issue, just because people don't take the time to: 1) Let me know they're changing or losing their email address 2) Check their email frequently - many systems have a quota on the size of the user's mailbox, especially at small colleges. I've said it already, but I'll say it again: Misfits Bible issues are BIG. But now I find that a new trend is picking up on the bible, the bashing of smokers. I agree thatbobby is a cool guy and that he has the right to be againt cigarettes. But T on the other hand, people also have the right to smoke if they so choose. Yes, I am a smoker, but I am not the kind of guy that blows smoke in your face just to spite you. I am considerate of those who are bothered by cigarette smoke and I respect their rights. Do the same for me, saying that anyone that smokes is a complete idiot is a very arrogant thing to say all it makes me want to do is blow smoke in your face and make you eat the ashes. What is so ironic is that these type of tend to be the ones that claim to be against smoking but will still go and smoke pot or drop some acid, but of course they are always able to justify their reckless actions. Last of all, what the hell does the issue of smoking have to do with the misfits? I am sure that alot of the other people here smoke also so remember who your audience is before you post such ridiculus letters and make "idiots" like me waste more valuable bible space having to speak our minds. Sure play the old tunes, but use >a different name. > Yes I can see where your coming from there J.I understand thats your opinion and (this is not a flame by the way) i just happen to disagree thats all. its true people will compare old 'fits to the new 'fits that bound happen in any band thats been around for a while gets a "new" singer. And yes glenn was a key aspect of the misfits but it wasnt just about him.(as opposed to DANZIG)It was the whole aspect of the misfits that people enjoy/enjoyed.Like the looks and the music /lyrics and the whole evil horror theme the misfits had.Its not as if its like a whole bunch of nobodys that were not even in the band and just decided to start the misfits back up again just for the sake of doing it.Besides quite a few "big"bands have scrappred their singer/frontman and still call themselves what they did before. In most cases the bands have done better ie; VanHalen,Anthrax, AC/DC.(thats all i can think of for the moment)Then there are those who dumped their singer and went "tits up"(motley crue). And in one case(s) dumped/left their singer(and other band members) and still carry the name but sound nothing like they use to and are just milking it for all its worth and care about nothing except$$$$.Dont wanna mention any tony-iommie-black sabbath i mean names. Then after a while once the misfits been around for a doin well(more than likley)people will forget the comparisons and just except the "new guy"and say yeah he's pretty cool.Like people say about Vanhalen and AC/DC.How hard can it be to fill glenn's place I've met the guy and he is what 3-4ft tall?Seriously though if Jerry and Doyle got back together as a "new" band and not the Misfits but still sang the old tunes and had the same image people would be sarcastically(sp?)saying "oh how original, this and that. why not just call themselves the Misfits".Then they proably be accused of selling out!.Anyway, my point being is the Misfits are not just about Glenn.Danzig(the group) is about glenn. The Misfits are about the band, the music, the image, and their fans.Just my opinion. I cannot say enough good things about it. In fact, for those of you out there who have not been to it, or those of you that have, this Saturday at midnight would be a good time to check it out. Beginning last Saturday, I presented the first of what I hope to be an ongoing series of Misfits' quizzes. The majority of the information can be found in either old Bibles, or on the page itself. Everyone seemed to enjoy the quiz, and said they would like to have another. Needless to say, I was more than happy to oblige. There will be a new Misfits' quiz Saturday at Midnight, containing 15-20 questions full of Misfits trivia. For those of you who may not know much about the Misfits, come along anyway, the IRC needs all the support it can get. I would suggest going to the IRC page first (there is a link at Misfits Central)to read who else goes there and learn some info. For those of you who missed last week's quiz, which was QUITE a few, here is a sample: Q: According to Jerry Only, what was the worst city the Misfits ever played? Q: Prior to the Misfits, Glenn and Mr. Jim were in what band together? Q: Michael Graves' new song Black Light, is about what? Q: Who originally wrote Rattfink? If you can't get a copy of it, it's expensive to buy, e-mail me and I can make a copy. Well see ya later fiends, and make sure you watch it. J. ------------------------------ From: J.Baldry@mail.nerc-swindon.ac.uk Date: Thu, 8 Feb 1996 08:24:09 GMT Subject: To smoke or not to smoke OK, first things first... while I agree that a smoking Vs non smoking debate on the Bible is both pointless and a waste of space, people like Adam Seven ought to remember that the point is not about smoking as such, it is about the fact that Bobby Steele was slated here by somebody who considered his opinions about smoking to make him a 'hypocritical fascist' or somesuch. I just figured that an ex-Misfit was being attacked and I wanted to stand up for him... now is that kind of post REALLY out of place on the Bible? After all, if someone slated Jerry I'd expect people to stand up for him also (as people quite frequently do). Second, while I'm a non smoker I totally agree that it is the individual's choice to start smoking INITIALLY. I would however be dubious as to whether once a person has started smoking they actually have much choice at all... after all, nicotine is addictive. Third, I agree with you Zodiac, drinking is equally as bad as cigarette smoking. The reason no one mentioned it (apart form you in your second post on the subject) was that it had/has nothing to do with your original attack on Bobby. Nothing like shifting the focus of attention when things get a little hot huh? One point I would make however is that one alcoholic drink per day is medically proven to increase your life expectancy, whilst even one drag of one cigarette per day will decrease your life expectancy :) Therefore, while I agree that it is completely everybody's right to smoke if they so wish, it is a f**king disgrace that a smoker will name call somebody that exercises THEIR right not to smoke and dislikes people smoking around them. More power to Bobby Steele... Also, I was wondering if it's gonna have stuff on it such as she and cough/cool with the keyboards. I want these tracks and I'm not big on spending $25 on a bootleg. Anyway, I'm sure it will be awesome. My friend, who I just recently started to get into the Misfits, asked me if he should buy it. He has no other Misfits albums and was afraid that he would be ridiculed by die hard Misfits fans such as myself. I told him to snap the fuck out of it and buy it! Smoking kills more people than alcohol(even if you count the people killed by drunk drivers). Plus alcohol has medical uses. If someone beats their kids or does other illegal activity while there drunk then it is their fault not alcohol. You say that you smoke only once in a while and you only do it because you in enjoy it. Tobacco will only make you fell good if your addicted to it (unlike alcohol). Sadly punk is dead: I say this becasue the "reformations" of the Misfits and the Sex Pistols. While the new wave of imitators (Green Day, Rancid, etc) are so repellent because they are all such obvious posers. Punk was all about attitude, and none of these people have that certain attitude. Punk is dead, just as psychedlia died, just as country died (don't be fooled by modern country music; its just the same pop-crap that's played on every other radio station, just with a country twang), just as 80's techno-pop died. Nothing lasts forever. Rock has been steadily rotting for more than a decade now because every lead guitarist wants to be either Jimmy Page of Eddie Van Halen. Punk died when the bands learned they cou financially profit from their music. Any band with any sense of ethics disbanded themselves rather than prostitute their music. Dead Kennedy's did it. Misfits/Samhain did it (atleast Danzig never tried to insult out intelligences by having us think his new music was a part of those older movements). Punk reformations are all financially motivated. i will get flamed for saying this, despite the fact that I think Jerry and Doyle deserve some sort of recognition from their old band. But Graves/Doyle/Jerry/Chud are the Misfits? Give me a break. I'd rather hear this line-up concentrate on NEW material (but live they would have to do some old songs) with a NEW name. Picture the one weird kid in christian school. Never liked or knew music. But then bad religion came along and at the time they were mopping the floor with belief in god. so i was down with that, cause thats where i was comin from. then the next band that i really got into was thge misfits. i was sleeping while listening to a tape with some punk stuff on it. suddenly i woke up in a cold sweat to "bullet". that was it. from then on i got into more music. and the creepier the better. at the moment i like lots of weird music. mostly obscure punk and gothic music. i was always a really fucked up but creative kid, all my stories were perverted with a horror/gore/eerie twist. i grow up and i was pleased to find music that fit the same mold. its not heavy metal. the misfits have nothing to do with metal. other than those cockrocers metalicca biting off their music. So here are other bands that i like that play music more aliking to the misfits. *****TSOL early 80s material (before "Hit and Run") *****Christian Death ("Only Theater of Pain", "Iron Mask", "Sticks a Finger Up Its Ass " bootleg, & "Deathwish") *****Superheroins (with Eva 0 of Christian Death. she has a album with other stuff of hers on it too) *****Speed Queens (also with Eva 0, on the above mentioned album...other recordings unknown but sought after by me) *****45 Grave (dont buy anything live like the stuff under the Cleopatra label or the "Only the Good Die Young" on Restless. don bolles of the germs on drums! cool!) *****Undead (no shit sherlock.....they are the more poppy of these bands) *****Kommunity FK (a little slower and gothed up) *****Cramps (not hard to find........) *****Samhain (duh, of course!) *****Fields of the Nephilim (more about demons and hell than horror movies. they are definately goth) *****Fiendz (also from new jersey, previously mentioned in issue 138 as the record "Havin' Fun" with the guys with blacked out eyes. the early stuff is poppy melodic horror punk. later stuff is just poppy punk.) *****Joneses (they have one song called "Graveyard Rock" on a BYO records compilation. its really cool 60s-like rock, and also the only song ive ever heard by them) *****the Ghouls (ive never heard them but they were an OC California band who played with bands like black flag and the like. iD like to hear some of their stuff. if anyone knows who im talkin about, lemme know) Also some up and comming horror punk bands from NJ are: *****the Brickbats (bassy, halloween oriented and catchy) *****the Murdered (cramps like surf gothabilly) id like to hear other bands of the horror punk deathrock influence. I am putting out compilations of such bands. currently i am working on a NJ goth-punk compilation featuring the two previously mentioned bands and others. Maybe you should consider running for President under the Democratic ticket. Alrighty then~ I don't want to speak for Zodiac but I think some of you took him completely wrong. First off, the tobacco industry is only providing a service, it is still basically, a free country and if people CHOOSE to smoke, then that is their choice. ( Sort of like people can CHOOSE to be responsible and get a job or CHOOSE to be a bum and pull off of welfare~ and yes, it is a CHOICE.) The industry is not pointing a gun at their heads. If these people seriously wanted to quit, then they would. Maybe they enjoy it, who knows. I am a recreational smoker, I only smoke when and if I have a drink, which is rare. And, I agree with him again, alcohol does alot more damage. Think about it. Somehow though, I don't think that the whole smoking thing was really the issue here. '96 issue of Terrorizer magazine. The article contains several errors but I've typed it up as it was printed- O.K.? _______________________________________________________ THE MISFITS LOOK BACK IN ANGER? The Misfits, that classic American band, are back with a brand new compilation album and plenty of plans for the future. An awe-struck Ian Galsper seizes this rare opportunity to get in touch with the outfit and talks here to guitarist Jerry Only. Well, if you've not heard of these guys by now, what the f**k are you doing reading this magazine?! (To paraphrase the title of one of their live albums!) What with Caroline having released a new compilation chocka with such classics as 'Attitude' and 'We Are 138', and a coffin shaped 4CD box set due soon, and virtually everyone citing 'em as a major influence, I thought an appearance in these hallowed pages was long overdue! I linked up with chatty guitarist Jerry Only to find out what was happening... "We were in litigation for many years, and we weren't able to use our name, but now we have our name back, and we've come up with a new lineup. It's me and Doyle (bass) as always, and we have a new drummer, name of Dr. Chud, and a new singer, Michael Graves. He's a young guy, only 20 years old, but we really think he'll grow into the job. He's got the tools, and he works hard, so we're excited about it!!" What were the legal problems you were having? "The situation was that things were being used that shouldn't have, and we had to come in and put a stop to it. We wanted to continue the band, and it wasn't something that should just be left undone. We really missed playing and we're happy to be back!" Why is the time right now for a MISFITS comeback? "Well, the thing is," reckons the enthusiastic guitarist. "We're not looking to hop on this 'second wave', or whateveer you want to call it, that's coming into shore...the whole reason we weren't able to play was because we were being kept from it and we're happy we've been able to come back and do it. It's just taken a real long time, a lot of red tape, but we overcame it, and we're back. We're gonna use the same energy levels we had before, and hopefully write a liitle more technical stuff besides the simplistic '50's type material. We're gonna grow with the band. We're really not looking to jump into the punk revival...it's just a twist of fate that the market is right for punk again...we'd actually prefer to avoid being tagged with that, if you know what I mean? We've waited too long to play again to be swept out when punk goes back out of fashion, y'know?" So, what've you been doing in the meantime? "Well, we've developed some resin model kits that we're selling, and a new T-shirt line that we've developed. And we shot a couple of movie pilots...we're trying to bring back 'Chiller Theatre', which was a Saturday night horror show that was aired here once a week. It's more or less a midnight witching hour on TV, where we'd show old horror films, and we just got done shooting the first of the pilots of it this last weekend. So, we're working on out own TV show, which we're trying to sell to one of the networks." Bassist Doyle takes the phone when I ask, have they had any contact with Glenn Danzig recently? "He won't get on the phone with us, he won't let us in his hotel rooms! We asked him to sing, y'know...But getting in touch with him is like pulling teeth from a Rhinocerus!! He's too big to talk to us, or something! I dunno...we've got no beef with him, but he seems to have a problem with us...But we like him, y'know?" Did he ever want to hold the reins on everything in the MISFITS like he does in DANZIG? "Well, when he got like that, that was when we broke up. He was never like that to start with but he got a little crazy and it wasn't fun anymore!" Jerry take over again when I ask them are they ever uncomfortable with how collectable their material is? "Nah, I just feel sorry for our loyal fans, because there have been a lot of people who've pumped out a lot of garbage just to make money off the loyalty of our people. One of the good things about our band is how collectable we are, which is why all those different versions of our stuff winds up being so appealling to people, but at the same time, I try to tell them not to spend more money than they think is fair for a particular bootleg...I don't like bootlegging, 'cos it's pirating, and you have no artistic control, and a lot of these pirates are just taking advantage of our fans, and I find that very sad!!" I bought the 'Beware' 12" over ten years ago for 50p, and I've since been offered =A3100 for it! "I've heard of them going for one thousand dollars in mint condition," replies Jerry incredulously. "And that's definitely going overboard!! The best way to beat the bootleggers is to put out the same product, only better quality, for less money, and that's we're doing with this boxed set, and these releases by Caroline." Why do you think the MISFITS music is so timeless? "Because it was honest," he says, without hesitation. "And that honesty shows through in the music! I think the music is memorable because it's simplistic, with good melodies and hooks, and the band puts out a lot of energy. We're not trying to be trendy...we don't cater to anyone's whims. We're just gonna do what comes natural, and hopefully that'll work for us. Our loyalty is to our people and to our music!!" ____________________________________________________________ The pictures that went with the article were probably the best thing about it- 2 nice big colour pictures of the new lineup beside an electric chair and a table with a pile of bones on it- I must say they look great, and I can't wait to see them live! ------------------------------ From: :! ------------------------------ From: Stewart Muir Gallacher <9243471G@student.gla.ac.uk> Date: Fri, 9 Feb 1996 13:38:03 BST Subject: The Stone, SF 1989 Here's a review of the gig Danzig played at the Stone in San Francisco back in 1989. _______________________________________________________ The iron guts of rock 'n' roll spew out in a viriolic mess. Heaven really is red and black and Danzig are tearing away the fleshy, flaccid walls of club rock to leave a stark, shiny and cliniaclly brilliant new model in it's place. Beneath the fingernails of Danzig lie the putrid remains of stale and bored old rock whores, too cliched to know, too stupid to care, too plagiaristic to understand how beautiful an element can be glorified to create something so big, so large and so disgustingly mighty that people throw themselves off walls like lemmings savagely looking for their death. I was part of a sold-out pack of wild happy dogs (believe me, we were all dogs), baying and snarling, frothing like the rabid, sinking teeth into every juicy morsel of sound that was flung our way. Grade A, USDA-approved real red meat. They don't make incisors sharp enough to tear at that stuff. You have to file your own. In the way that only a great rock 'n' roll show can, Danzig make you feel nihilistic, masochistic even. And the sound was so fucking great I didn't miss a thing. Christ's guitar stood toe to toe with every fucker in the building; nose to nose, spitting into the face, whacking you around the head with savage rhythm and picking your brain with clean splintered lead breaks. Von psychoed his way through the show, a human tapped into the power outlet, a charge sending him into convulsive fits of action and electric four-string chewing. Biscuits is a remarkable drummer, not only in style, but in the way he loses himself inside his single-mounted tom and various floor drums. And Danzig? If God gave anyone a voice since Presley and Orbison, it was Glenn Danzig. It is a voice of melting qualities, its pure and unashamed soulfulness enough to break you down into pieces. The man himself is a stomach knot of muscles, all twisting and writhing against each other to propel Danzig into the ugly face of his followers. He jumps like strewn up tension and anger, he screams with pure chilling killer, he flexes with the type of aggression that only the finest rock 'n' roll can give you. 'Possession', 'Not of this World', 'Twist of Cain', 'Mother'- all propellers into the land of immortality, all maggots into the brain, all defiant of everything and anything. If Alex of 'A Clockwork Orange' had been into Danzig instead of Beethoven, those bastards wouldn't have got within miles of him. Because however hard you try to escape him (sadly some do) you can't once you've heard it. Danzig jammed with Hetfield and Hammett, but as great as that was it didn't add to the show any, merely another part of it. Indeed, it served to illustrate that both are as magnetised by him as we are (and if you're not, catch the drift). Yes, Danzig played Misfits tunes, and yes, they were good. But I wouldn't have cared if they didn't, because Danzig now is Danzig strong. Stronger than most you can throw at me. In my heart I bled for this show, I bled with pure and utter pleasure. It felt religeous in its own way, because Danzig stirred a feeling inside that I haven't felt at a club for years. Definitely one of the gigs of the years...already. Jerry sent one down to me for a sort of preliminary viewing. I have reproduced the 3 page letter for those of you who can't wait until next month. It is available on the page as well as below. The mailing will go out in 2 batches. Those of you who sent your name and address to the Crimson Ghost last year will receive it after those of you who sent your name and address directly to the PO Box. Those who sent their address to me will also receive the first mass mailing. ______________________________________________________________________________ THE OFFICIAL MISFITS FIEND CLUB Thirteen years ago The Misfits disappeared from the face of the earth. Now it's 13 years later and it's as if time has frozen since then. This was the band you wanted to see, the music you wanted to hear, and the "Fiend Club," which you thought would always endure. WELCOME TO THE RETURN OF THE OFFICIAL MISFITS FIEND CLUB The Fiend Club is officially back as of January 1, 1996. It is free to all those who are proud to put their name next to mine and stand behind the band that gives all they have, all of the time. I've been saving these stickers, cyclopian membership and all of these thoughts just for you - The Loyal. I personally ran the Doyle Fan Club. I read all of your letters. I've saved them all. These letters helped me when I was down, they kept me strong, they helped me fight, and they made me win. I'm proud to bring The Misfits back for you. I will endure, or die trying! I do however want to pay homage to all the "Fiends" who died before they could see the devestation that I have planned. These "Fiends" were good friends who helped the band all they could, without pay, in the early days. Jimi Coleman #28, Hoople, Tony Marano #24, David Cono, Joe D., Joe Coppolla and just as of November, Patti Giordano. I will carry their honor into battle...and I pray they can somehow see us come again in glory. The package I've sent you has many things about it which must be explained. They are as follows: 11 - T-shirt Flyers 2 - Misfits Fiend Club Stickers 2 - Cyclopian Logo Cards (Circle) 2 - Cyclopian Membership Cards 1 - Find-A-Fiend (Postcard) I've sent a double set of membership cards and stickers for you to sign up a fiend. Please choose someone who will support the band, as you have - "Eternally" To sign up a fiend, please bring at least two T-shirt flyers to at least 3 local stores that carry "Misfit" gear. Get all the information from these stores, and fill it in on the postcard (phone #, fax #, buyers name, zip code). After you have all of the info from three (3) stores on your "Find-A-Fiend" card, put your new fiend's address, zip and phone number in the return address spot. Then mail it back to us to our database. Don't put a fiend who's already in because the computer will erase any duplicates. We are trying to double our "fiends" everytime you see these postcards. Please - let's grow! T-shirts are our only resource for funding the "Fiend Club" and will supply the free goods and postage for all "Fiend Club" mailings. Checks must be made out to Cyclopian Music Inc. I will later offer package deals on both posters and T-shirts. So be patient. Allow me to organize this "Fiend Club" so I can keep up with it without taking away from new music. Please use the "MF" numbers when ordering shirts. An order form is provided. My fax number is 201-764-6718. Any stores that want to order can fax me info and a phone #. Please always send your phone number. I don't have the time to write back but if I can, I'll call. I'm announcing a good fiend of mine, Mark Kennedy (AKA Misfits Bible) will be the President of The Misfits Fiend Club and answer any E-mail and Internet stuff. I will update him on a constant basis since the The Misfits Fiend Club mailings take a long time to organize and are not quick enough for some fiends. Mark will be the well and will always have fresh water. During Halloween we attended the "Chiller Theatre" convention at the Meadowlands Hilton and interviewed Bela Lugosi Jr., Sara Karloff, Ron Chaney Jr., and the "Creature from the Black Lagoon", Ben Chapman. I offered the assistance of the "Fiend Club" to help gather petitions to get "Monster Stamps" through Congress. The stamps will be Karloff - Frankenstein, Lugosi - Dracula, Chaney - Wolfman or The Phantom of the Opera, and hopefully Chapman as the Creature. I saw Elvis stamps, Marilyn stamps, bird stamps, flower stamps, etc. Why not monsters? They need our help. I've enclosed a petition to be filled out and faxed to Bela Lugosi Jr. (213-623-3379) and also faxed to me (Jerry Only 201-764-6718) or mailed back to the "Fiend Club". I don't usually offer your service but since these people are the essence of "The Misfits" it's only right to give back to those who've given us so much! I would be thankful for any help you might be able to give. I'm proud to lead you into a new millenium. Subject: March issue of Alternative Press Did anyone out there pick up the March issue of Alternative Press with Ministry on the cover? It has a small article about the Misfits, with numerous errors. I'll type it up since it's relatively small: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Alternative Press, March '96, page 13(interesting choice of page) (There's an old Misfits band shot at the top with a caption that reads "Every Day Is Halloween") Caroline Records is giving the world some real punk rock with its schedule of re-releases from the highly influential New Jersey punk band the Misfits. In November, Collection II was released, featuring tracks from their incredibly sought-after 7-inch singles. On February 27, the label will issue Box Set, a limited edition of five compact disks in an elaborate coffin-shaped plastic box with faux velour lining. The disks will contain every track officially commited to tape(104 songs completely remastered) in various demo and alternate versions(35 in total including a band version of leader Glenn Danzig's solo single "Spook City, USA") as well as Static Age, the group's original late-1978 debut album that was shelved in favor of the live Walk Among Us, and the oft-bootlegged Master Sound Productions studio sessions. The coffin set will also have a 28-page booklet with never-before-printed lyrics, a complete discography, liner notes by former 'Fits/Samhain/Danzig bassist Eerie Von, and an enamel Misfits Fiend Club badge. Truly an artifact for underground braineaters of all ages. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm not going to even bother pointing out the errors because you all probably noticed them. Interestingly enough, on the same page there is a picture of some band called Soul Coughing and on top of the picture is typed "Cough Cool". And on the previous page there is an article titled "Check Into Horror Hotel" which is about some club. And yes, on that same page, right underneath that article is another one titled "Children in Heat" which is about the soundtrack to a movie called Screwed. Later ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Feb 1996 00:42:51 -0500 From: xylophobia Subject: Jerry Update Kenny's Castaways will be having their first "PUNK NIGHT" on February 26th to correspond with the Misfits Bible dinner party of the same night. It will be taking place from 9pm until midnight on the 26th. The band may hang out and watch the show after the dinner party. Bands that will be playing include Brown Tongue and Sardonica. For more information, Kenny's Castaways can be reached at (212) 473-9870. Jerry seems very excited about meeting the Internet fans... and... and... and... there are rumors that if the band is up to it they'll head back over to Kenny's Castaways after the box set signing and jam for a while. This is NOT definite, NOT probable - just possible. In other news, the Fiend Club mailing has now gone out to 2 Fiends - myself and a fiend in Indiana. It looks great and I'm sure everyone will be pleased with it. It has a lot of leftovers from the Doyle Fan Club era. After the tour of Europe, Jerry hopes to have another mailing - this one consisting of a simple postcard with US tour date announcements and a summary of the Europe tour. mark ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Feb 1996 19:06:37 -0500 From: Crimson Ghost As promised here are the list of people that supported our effort to get Jaime up here from Alabama. There were a total of 37 people who pledged money I believe 3 of them requested that I not send a pick to them so that leaves 34, I will send all 34 of them picks! If you've ever read Arkahm Asylum (A batman graphic novel) then you'll appreciate the design, It was a swirl of deeper reds and a somewhat Surreal Crimson Ghost skull on in the center right of the flat. Underneath the Skull was the old Spraypaint Misfits logo. Question, Does Danzig have control of the Famous Monsters Logo or do Jerry and Doyle have control of both logos and are choosing to use the older logo. Also there were a few flyers around the store about the signing. Not only will it be jerry and doyle, but also France Coma, Mr. Jim, and Bobby Steel will also be there to sign the boxed sets. Finally, Generation said the boxed set will be at a special price of $49.99 for the two hour signing. This I doubt to be a special price but who knows maybe it is. Anyone who's planning on going and isn't familiar with NYC, please save these directions. But, if you use them, if you get lost, don't blame me. They're the directions I'm using myself and they're from a local road map so they might have to be adjusted on the spot. But you'll get very close to the place. So here goes ... I'm going by the Lincoln Tunnel but if you take the Holland Tunnel, it'll let you off closer to the Village than the Lincoln will. There'll be less city driving. But I don't know how to get there exactly from the Holland. These directions are for the Lincoln Tunnel. Anyway, once you get out of the tunnel, go all the way down till you can't go anymore. I don't remember off hand what the street is. There should be a big parking garage infront of you. Turn left. Keep going up and keep to the right because you'll have to turn right eventually. I'm going down Seventh Ave. It's more direct. Keep going down for a ways. Some of the streets divide so just try to stay on Seventh but if you take the wrong divide and end up on another street, just double back. When you get to Houston, turn left (I'm pretty sure Houston is a two-way street but if you can't turn up Houston, just try another street and everything should work out fine). Once on Houston, turn left down Thompson St. and just keep driving. Generation Records is between W. 3rd and Bleeker. That's about it. Like I said, if you get lost with these directions, I probably will too so ... Anyway, I hope they help all who are planning on going ... - BILE666. ------------------------------ From: KENNEY@salem.wvnet.edu Date: Tue, 13 Feb 1996 15:56:31 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: punk is dead This subject is such a bore cause it is so poorly grounded. Answer this question: what is punk? Answer: pissed off guys and girls with loud guitars and a pounding rhythm section (of course there are other forms of punk, but most of us get this mental picture when we hear the word, don't we?). All these fucking people who keep saying punk died because bands today are only in it for the money need to loosen up a bit. Punk isn't dead, it's just pretty much mainstream (like it has been for the past fucking 20 years) just so happens now more than any time recently. Yeah, Green Day is music. I'm not taking that fucking ATTITUDE lane, either. I buy the fucking album for the MUSIC not for the bass guitarist's attitude about life. If I was around just to listen to DIY musically-challenged assholes complain about their problems, I'd go to the campus cafeteria and listen to my friends bitch. The best punk band ever (in my book) was Big Black (yes even ALBINI considered the band punk.) They were DIY to the extreme, and didn't even sound like anyone else, and, most importantly of all, they flat out fucking rocked. But their policy of diy harmed them, they could have influenced so many bands of today but it seems they are still unkown. Read anything about Albini and it mentions only that he's a producer, nothing about his 3 groups. So if you people are looking for a band that you can say is cool and hope no one else has heard of them so you can seem "special", hey, Big Black is right there for you. If you want even more "alternative", go with Rapeman. Hell, even the name is "alternative." The fact is, punk is usually pissed off young kids? How in the hell can that "die out?" Punk is timeless. Punk was around before the fucking Sex Pistols or the late 70's. Half the shit we call 50's r&b was just an early form of what we call punk. It grows, adapts. I think of Filter (even though some of their shit is dumb) as a modern punk band. But wait, they're industrial! you're saying. Who needs a label?? You same people who complain that labels are useless are also the ones that bitch that punk and other forms of music are dead. If I had a good band and devoted my time to it you damn betcha I'd want a little cash for it. You think all punk bands should be penniless and only play to crowds say of 5, maybe only to (very) close family members? Wow, that would be really punkish of them! Read Rollins' "Get in the Van." NO band should have had to live like that. If you believe that is what makes a band punk, to live like a dog and be treated like shit by your "fans" then maybe you should start your own group, show the rest of us how it's done. But be sure to send us a letter to know when you'll be performing. Cause I'm sure you wouldn't want us to see you on MTV (GASP!) Joe Kenney PS: if there are any typos in here it's cause some dumbass behind me is being real loud with his friends. He's mushing (?) or somethin. I'm about to go fucking "mush" my fists all over his pimply face. Misfits/Samhain did it it's funny how some of these "fiends" think they know so much about punk. it seems to be a popular notion that the only real punk bands are from the old days. but i guess if people are always watching MTV and shopping at the mall for their music, they really can't help it if their clueless. these guys seem to think because they're familiar with the big bands of the 70s like the ramones, sex pistols, damned and the clash, or the ones from the early 80s like black flag, DKs (fucking sorry bastards - after their 1st LP, they sucked), and the circle jerks, they know what real punk is. a lot of this stuff is good, but there was so much more out there that is just as good, if not better (for instance, i wonder just how many of those on this list listen to the Saints, Pagans, Crime, Weirdos, Real Kids, Stooges, Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers, Zeros, Dead Boys, and DMZ - all of these are pretty damn well known) As for the state of today's punk, go listen to the Dwarves (go out and buy their 1st lp "Blood, Guts, & Pussy), New Bomb Turks, Gaunt, Rip Offs, Teengenerate, Devil Dogs, and the Humpers. these bands would blow away most of the early 80s california groups with ease. >While the new wave of imitators (Green >Day, Rancid, etc) are so >repellent because they are all such obvious >posers. Punk was all about >attitude, and none of these people have that >certain attitude. i don't see how these guys are posers. Rancid may not have good fashion sense, but i wouldn't say they were posers. they just play the kind of punk they like - the same way that the sex pistols played music that was incredibly "influenced" by the Ramones, New York Dolls, and the Stooges. it just happens that melodic punk is now accepted and all the little kids think rancid are cool cause they look 'punk.' they have some okay songs. as for green day, since when has melodic punk that has nothing to do with snottiness not been punk? think of the buzzcocks, the jam, undertones, descendents, lurkers, zeros and X. in fact, "Kerplunk" is probably the best pop/melodic punk album since "Milo Goes to College" - on some nights, it might even be better than that one. >Rock has been steadily rotting for more than a decade now >because every lead guitarist wants to be >either Jimmy Page of Eddie Van >Halen. well, mainstream rock has been shit since that shitty Sgt. Pepper album. since then, you had to look underground for good rocknroll - probably starting with the Velvet Underground and the huge assortment of Stones influenced snotty Garage Punk bands (punk was actually used during the 60s - Standells, Shadows of Knight, Keggs for instance). then you had the MC5, the Stooges, New York Dolls, and maybe a few others. then you had the ramones; the rest is history. for the past two decades, i would say that Rock has been pretty damn good. just get a hold of a Crypt Records or Get Hip catalog and find out. >Punk died when the bands learned they could financially profit from >their music. Any band with any sense of >ethics disbanded themselves rather >than prostitute their music. Dead Kennedy's did it. Misfits/Samhain did it um, i really doubt that the initial punk bands from the 70s were indifferent to money. i mean, that's about the only reason the Sex Pistols were together. the idea of selling out as a negative thing didn't start until indie scenes and labels began getting bigger in the 80s. and the DKs ended (three LPs too late) because jello was caught up with legal troubles. and i doubt any sense of ethics had to do with the misfits and samhain breaking up. if any of you out there are like me and like the Misfits mainly because they are a good, melodic punk band (instead of those who dig them cause their horror angle is so cool. and i wouldn't say they are goth related. samhain is. there's a difference between psychotronic imagery and goth.), and you want to get into punk rock, i could give you some advice on where to look for good curent punk stuff. later, james ps- i noticed someone mentioned the Quincy Punx. well, at least someone pays attention to the punk underground. ------------------------------ From: dominc@interserv.com Date: Tue, 13 Feb 1996 15:28:05 -0800 Subject: Smoke I think all this e-mail about smoking is the biggest waste of space I have ever seen. We are trying to organize a tour as soon as possible, and we are especially interested in getting a show in Toronto. Please send this sort of information to the Misfits Fiend Club (PO Box 310; Vernon NJ 07462) so the Misfits can play in your town. The first set of Fiend Club membership packages went out Saturday and another set will be going out this Saturday. Packages were sent to overseas Fiends in Europe. US membership packages will go out later this month in 2-3 batches, as mentioned before. This mailing will be followed up by a smaller postcard mailing in June. I can no longer except Fiend Club memberships over email. We will have an online membership service available some time in the next few months that will serve this purpose, so for now please use the postal address. We will also be accepting memberships in New York City at the signing at Generation Records and membership packages will be given out there ONLY to those who are not already on the list. A lot of you have written 2-5 times for whatever reason, but you're only allowed one package. One more thing about the mailing - the envelopes are being sealed with special Misfits stickers. There are 10000 in all (2000 each of 5 different colors). Your sticker color is determined by which mailing you receive. The first batch is yellow and the second will be orange. I think the only reason music is categorized today is so that MTV can label it and sell it to brainwashed idiots. My friend (who is here as I write) says music is labeled by individuals who feel the need to associate themselves with a certain group of people. The punks want to be punks and the metal heads all want to be metal heads. I noticed your post in the Bible regarding subscriber "participation." A tad bitter to say the least, though I guess I have to admit that I can see your point. Even I haven't taken advantage of all the contests and what not, but a lot of it is that I have to spend a lot of time going back and looking up this stuff (I spent about six hours, if not more, on the Static Age Poster Contest). Everyone wants something for free, I suppose. A lot of the ill response may be because people don't realize just how simple these things are in terms of what you need to do to get involved and what not. Tonight I booted up the Caroline Contest just to see if was still possible to enter (call your post motivation if you want), but in honesty I didn't know that you still could enter it. I certainly can't speak for the other six hundred and whatever subscribers, but sometimes we just overlook these things and don't take the time to go back and review. I know when I flip through the Bible I mainly look at the address of the person who posted something. So many of them just bitch about Glenn and Jerry and whoever, so I usually skip those and look for you and CG and EVB and Brent and some others. when you fly through it so fast you tend to overlook things. I'm sure not all of the six hundred and whatever actually make it through the Bibles. They do get a tad long at times, you must admit. I forgot where i was going with this. anyway, don't feel too discouraged about the numbers. just because we don't enter doesn't mean we don't have the interest. How many Publisher's Clearing House things have you sent back? Sure it's simple, but most of us dont' take the time to do it. besides, the fewer of them that enter the better my chances are! :) take care Mike Westlake mtw4@axe.humboldt.edu ------------------------------ From: Adam Christensen Subject: Blah, Blah, Blah ! Date: Wed, 14 Feb 1996 06:01:21 -0500 (EST) until recently I have been annoyed at the misfits related sightings that are frequently posted. But last night I had two sightings and I nearly shat my pants over it. I was watching a show on the discovery channel that is called MOVIE MAGIC. It shows how they do all the special effects and stunts in movies. This episode was mainly about horror films. They had the makeup guys that made pinhead from hellraiser ( killer movie ) and he was saying how it took a long time to set up pinheads mask because it has exactly one-hundred and thirty-eight nails in it! Then I flipped channels and leverne and shirly were on, I fucking hate that show. I was about to flip again when I noticed that Squiggi is the missing fifth misfit! Look at that devilock, puny and pathetic as it is it is still definitly a devilock, and I wouldn't be suprised if he wore spikes on that leather jacket when he goes out on the town. On a more serious note I would like to respond to wallace's comment that punk is dead: Cancel your subscribtion to the bible and join the fanclub for live or boyz to fags. And lastly, Eat my shit. If there is anyone who would like to experiance the pleasures of being controlled by the government and be a sellout loser then buy some cigarettes and smoke your brains out. Jello once said, "Punk's not dead it just deserves to die, when it becomes another stale cartoon". He may be right, and the cool thing is that it never truly dies, (just like evil) it always continues to live in the souls and minds of people who have identified with it. We have our tapes, CD's vinyls, etc. of all these great bands for a reason, we love it!! I agree that there is no real "new" punk out there it's all crap... It is for this reason that we choose to listen to bands like the Misfits. It's all about attitude and intensity---nothing else--just listen to Rollins on 'We are 138'. It's pure energy. The Misfits are coming to our towns to play because the like it and we like it. They are simply the best. I cannot wait because no matter how different they might sound, it will be better than everything else out there. I may live in the past, but punk will never be dead in my soul. Three years ago, I wrote to the Doyle Fan Club, with nothing else in mind except to see how the guys were doing. Later, when I found out that Jerry read the mail, I didn't feel right writing just to ask for free stuff. In particular, I didn't like the idea that Jerry had to take time out of his day to read a letter from me and add my name a list. Maybe, I thought, he'd rather be playing the bass or making rubber dolls of himself. Then, when you said that we could write to you and you'd compile the list for Jerry, I did. I don't mind taking time out of your day, nearly as much. Thanks for helping me join the club. I would have felt terrible missing out on the mailings. I don't think it's fair though to assume that, just because someone doesn't write to the band or belong to a fan club or mailing list, they're not involving themselves. Long before there was a Misfits Bible or a reformation of the band, my friends and I were out buying the Kryst The Conqueror CD as soon as we heard about it. If I could only be involved with the band one way, it would be like that. Through the music. Thanks for not making me have to choose. Let's all hope that it's as good as it supposed to be. Anyway, I wanted to make a couple comments on something that was written in the last bible. First of all, someone said that zodiac's argument was wrong because he used false information. This person then proceeded to back up his own argument with false 'facts' as well. How can someone be such an expert on smoking when it is obvious that he himself has never smoked? He said that the only people who get anything from smoking are people who are addicted to it. I smoke maybe once or twice a month (hardly addicted I would say) and I get a good buzz each time. People who smoke a pack a day don't get a buzz, they get the nicotine that they are addicted to. You can still smoke a little and not be addicted. Also, this same guy said something to the effect that "I would rather have my kids smoke pot or drink before instead of smoke." Tell me, were you high when you wrote this? First of all, pot smoke is so much worse for you than tabacco smoke. Ignoring the psychological effects (which are still highly debated), just the smoke has a far greater concentration of carcinogens than regular cigarette smoke. People who smoke pot 5 times a week ingest more harmful chemicals into their bodies than people who smoke a pack per day (I did not make this up; it is from a research article). Well, I ought to get going now. I don't hate pot smokers (some of my best friends smoke it), but I was just trying to get a point across. Most of the people I know that smoke pot also smoke cigarettes when they can't smoke pot. Sorry for taking up so much space; flames welcome and encouraged. This is a few doors down from the record store where the signing will take place. Kenny's Castaways Punk Night, 9pm-12Midnight -------------------------------------------- If you're bored, Kenny's will be featuring a couple punkish bands including Sardonica (one of Dr. Chud's old bands). Some of The Misfits may hang around for this. Generation Records Misfits Box Set Signing, 12Midnight-2am ---------------------------------------------------------- The most important event - this is the earliest you can get the box set, AND the only place that Jerry, Doyle, Franche' Coma, Mr. Jim, and Bobby Steele will be available for autographs - all at the same time. There will also be a Fiend Club table for those of you who still haven't joined the club. Kenny's Castaways, 2am-? ------------------------ If they (Jerry, Doyle, Dr. Chud, Michale) aren't too tired, the band might, just might, walk over to Kenny's and jam for a little while. No promises, no guarantee, no nothing. There's a possibility that this will happen. Directions: ----------- Leon Marcelo has kindly typed up directions for us. I personally used his directions back in October to get to the Horror Convention and found them to be 100% correct. Kenny's Castaways and Generation Records are located on the same block, so if you find one, you'll find the other. Leon's directions: These directions are for the Lincoln Tunnel. ------------------------------------- To contribute to the next issue, please send email to: misfits@virginia.edu For more information, contact Mark Kennedy at: msk4m@watt.seas.virginia.edu For answers to almost all questions, please check The Misfits World Wide Web page before posting, located at: http://watt.seas.virginia.edu/~msk4m/ The Misfits mailing address is: Misfits Fiend Club | P.O. They are as diy as you get. they build all their own instruments, build their own amps, book their own tours, put out their own records, they even master and press their own records and just did their own cd, too. their music is sometimes slow and dirgy a la melvins, and sometimes faster than septic death. the only thing you misfits fans might not agree with is that most of their lyrics are very political. but anyway if you're interested, they have a ton of seven inches out, a five inch record, a couple twelve inches, probably a ten inch or two, they're on a lot of compilations, and now they have a cd. you can order their stuff through vermiform records, whose address I have convienently misplaced, but if you really wanna find out email me and I'll find it for you.
